The recently opened Hilton Sukhumvit Hotel is home to Bangkok’slatest Italian Restaurant, Scalini. Serving 1920’s style fine ItalianAmerican cuisine, the second floor outlet boasts sumptuoussurroundings, an open interactive kitchen with a wood fired pizzaoven and an all encompassing wine cellar.

The contemporary surroundings are finished in luxuriant leather,soft silk fabrics, tiled floors, and silver and copper tones. Grandwooden furniture evokes the period feel of the restaurant, andgigantic flower arrangements form the centrepiece.

Scalini features well lit corridor style dining beside full lengthwindows, surrounding a more sedate main dining setting thatprovides an intimate mood.

On arrival via the lift or via the grand winding feature staircase,you are almost certain to be welcomed by ebullient restaurantmanager Roberto Visaggio, pictured above, who is a walkingencyclopaedia on all things Italian and an expert on fine winingand dining.

The recently concluded �Eighth Clutter Sale for Charity� held in the ballroom of Four Seasons Hotel Bangkok was another resoundingsuccess.

The NewsMakers, comprising of senior editors, communications and public relations professionals, spearheaded this unusual and funevent, now on its seventh year. Held annually since 2006, this muchawaited oneday event has been attracting hundreds of bargainhunters on the lookout for treasures sold by the glitterati, members of the expat and diplomatic communities, and the public, some ofwhom volunteer their time and �clutter� to help raise money for charity. Proceeds from the Clutter Sale will go towards the�Hematological Cancer Research Centre� at Chulalongkorn Hospital for cancer research.

The goods sold were primarily unused or nearlynew secondhand items in mint condition, certified brandname goods, vintage clothes,fashion accessories, jewellery, home accessories, sports equipment and antiques. Various hotels and resorts, Turkish Airlines, BangkokAirways, Air Asia and others donated items and vouchers as raffle prizes at the Raffle Corner.

Support for this muchawaited event has grown over the past years, foremost being the Four Seasons Hotel Bangkok which hasbeen providing free use of the Ballroom. Prominent personalities, various women�s groups and the diplomatic community have alsobeen lending their support.

The contest this year is quite differentfrom the past, as photos are submittedin a set, each linked with one another ina story that the photographerexperienced along a journey.

The sets of photos submitted this yeartell beautiful stories of people andplaces, captured by the photographerson their travels.

They represent different angles ofcultures of various countries in aninteresting way.

The photos are judged not only byphotography skills and composition, butalso by idea, concept and selection,which are also important skills for agood photographer.

The evening promises to be one of the musical highlights of the PattayaCalendar. The Silapakorn Summer Music School (SSMS) String Orchestra wasformed in 2005.

The SSMS invites students from all music schools in Thailand each year to studyover summer. The SSMS String Orchestra comprises outstanding alumni from theSummer School.

Many of the young performers have performed in a major musical centre such asCarnegie Hall New York or Cadogan Hall London, among others.

The Silapakorn Summer Music School (SSMS) String Orchestra will perform TheFour Seasons by Italian composer Vivaldi, as well as two of Mozart�s Divertimenti.In addition, the concert will feature solo performances by Tasana Nagavajara, oneof Thailand�s finest violinists and a distinguished graduate of the InternationalMenuhin Music Academy in Switzerland. Khun Tasana has also served as ConcertMaster of the Bangkok Symphony Orchestra for ten years and is invited frequentlyto play in Italy and Germany.

The orchestra is directed by SSMS faculty member Leo Phillips, a distinguishedBritish violinist and conductor, having worked with Khun Tasana and the SSMSOrchestra to great acclaim in the past.

Beginning at 7.00pm, the cost is 500 baht for adults and 250 baht for students.

Pattaya Classical Guitar Festival & Competition�

Sukosol Hotels in association with the Thailand GuitarSociety, Pattaya People Media Group and the city ofPattaya proudly presents the fifth annual Pattaya ClassicalGuitar Festival & Competition on Sunday, October 27th atSiam Bayshore, Pattaya.

The festival offers music enthusiasts in Thailand a uniqueopportunity, showcasing many of the world�s top guitarmakers and musicians. Open to the public, with collectors,players, music lovers, students and general enthusiastswelcome to attend, the festival is a mustsee event forguitar aficionados and music lovers on the Eastern Seaboard.

The festival boasts an impressive list of artists, luthiers andstudents from Japan, Germany, South Korea, the CzechRepublic, Indonesia, Switzerland, America, Poland, Indonesiaand Thailand.

This allday event will kick off with the adult and junior guitar competitions at 09:00, followed by a worldclass guitar exhibition at13:00. The Thailand Guitar Society student concert will start at 14:00, followed by a performance from the "Finest Young Guitarists�starring Natdanai Phuaphanprasong (Thailand), The Juggajee Guitar Duo (Thailand) and Ouo Jeli (Indonesia) at 16:00.

Next follows the announcement of the competition winners with first prize in the adult competition being a concert guitar valued at$US4,500, made by the world renowned Indonesian luthier Hanief Palopo.

At 18:00, the "Master Concert" with performances from Woratep Rattanaumpawan & Sakol Siripipattanakul (Thailand), PongpatPongpradit (Thailand), Santi Kaewjai (Thailand) and 10P11 Guitar Duo (Thailand) will begin.

The day will then culminate with a spectacular concert at 20:00, featuring expert performances from Pia Gazarek Offermann(Germany), Paul Cesarczyk (USA/Polish), Leon Koudelak (Swiss/Czech), Tomonori Arai (Japan) & Hitoshi Miyashita (Japan/Thailand),Maria Duo (Japan) and an Award ceremony.

Proceeds from the festival will go to the Father Ray Foundation, a nonprofit organisation that takes care of 850 orphaned, abused anddisadvantaged children and students with disabilities.
