Badgers are harmless, loved, unique andsecretive. Yet they face illegal trapping,baiting with dogs and 50,000 die on the roadseach year in Britain. Now they face theirbiggest threat yet – the dairy industry,backed by an idiotic government who ignorescience, rationality and public opinion!

As you’ll know, British badgers are stillbeing accused by farmers of being the mainculprits in spreading bovine TB. The realculprits are farming practices so intense thatdairy cows face numerous infections andrarely survive beyond five years old. TB testsare often inaccurate, allowing disease carriersto re-infect their herd or to be transportedaround the UK, infecting new herds.

They are ignoring the 10 year study by topscientists which established that badger'culling' will not control TB in cattle. Thismeans many animals will be cruelly killed tono purpose – other than mollifying farmerswho refuse to change their ways.

Viva! has been campaigning for badgers foralmost five years and we helped secure thevictory for these wonderful animals in Wales.However, as the Government are set onexterminating wildlife in England, we havejoined forces with Team Badger, spearheadedby Brian May. This is the largest coalition ofanimal groups, scientists and vets ever seenin the UK. See pages nine and 40 andwww.viva.org.uk/badgers to help save our wildlife.

Another wild animal that bears the brunt ofhuman short sightedness, ignorance andselfishness is the wild boar. This fascinatingand highly intelligent animal was hunted toextinction in the UK about 300 years ago butis again living freely in small numbers insome areas, including the Forest of Dean.Tragically, the Forestry Commission plan tokill 100 animals in this area so please joinwith us to stop this tragedy (page 12).

I’m very pleased to tell you that Viva! is now acharity. As we survive solely on contributionsfrom the public this is very important as it

means we can claim Gift Aid onyour donations. It also means thatif you are kind enough to leaveViva! a gift in your Will, you do notpay inheritance tax on it (see page5). Viva!, as a charity, will continueits energetic and vivacious fight forthe animals. The Vegetarian &Vegan Foundation is continuing itscrucial health campaigns under thenew name of Viva! Health as anintegral part of Viva!. Exciting times!

More wonderful news is thatyour kind donations have savedHamish and Dougal! The twohandsome Highland steers havereached the safety of Hillside AnimalSanctuary (see page 6) and will live out theirlives amongst a herd of Highland cattle.

In the last issue of Viva!life I revealed thecruelty involved in farming dairy goats. Viva!’sundercover investigation exposed how babyanimals are mutilated, including having theirhorns burnt out without pain relief. Theremarkable news is that the Royal College ofVeterinary Surgeons (RCVS) has supportedour claim that this is illegal (page 13). Thefarm is also being investigated with a view topotential criminal proceedings.

Finally, Christmas is drawing near. I hopeyou enjoy our new Gifts for Life catalogueenclosed! The vegan ‘milk’ chocolate Nutsand Chews really are something else! The detail…Viva! was launched as a charity by Juliet Gellatley in 1994 and she laterchanged its name to the Vegetarian & Vegan Foundation. The Viva! namecontinued but as Viva! Campaigns – a non-profit group vigorouslycampaigning for animals.

The Charity Commission has approved the VVF reverting to its original nameof Viva! and the new Viva! will campaign in precisely the same way as the oldone on all the veggie issues. The VVF’s name will disappear and its work willbe undertaken by Viva! Health – a large new section within the charity.

VVF (now Viva! Health) supporters are still vital to our life-saving healthcampaigns, just as Viva! supporters will continue to fund Viva!’s workincluding, of course, our investigations to save animals.

Farrowingcrates – no moreexcuses“We only do it to save piglets from being killed.”This has always been the excuse of farmers forusing despicable farrowing crates – tubular metalstructures that hold breeding sows captive for amonth or more at a time. A massive piece ofresearch from the Universities of Warwick andBristol confirms what Viva! has always claimed –death rates of piglets in factory farms and free-range arcs are the same. There was no significantdifference in piglet mortality between any of them.

I wanna be like you-hoo-hooHuman beings separated from chimpanzees six millionyears ago and from gorillas about 10 million years ago,

according to a report in the science journal Nature.About half a million years ago, gorillas split into two

species, Eastern and Western gorillas. By sequencing thegenome of a female Western lowland gorilla namedKamilah, researchers found that most gorilla DNA is

similar or identical to human’s. Amazingly, in 30 per centof the genome, they found that gorillas are closer to

humans and chimpanzees than the two gorilla speciesare to each other.

Swim raises over £5,000!Yes, we succeeded! – thanks to hundreds of supporters who kindlysponsored our swim on Lake Windermere. You made the madness (andcold) worthwhile! We exceeded our target and raised £5,034 for Viva!.

I was the reluctant member of the team! Of course, I eagerly fundraisefor Viva!; it’s just that I’m a rubbish swimmer and petrified of cold water.Many charities participated in the swim and I came 1994th out of 2009swimmers and took one hour 30 minutes to cover the mile – but whatthe heck! I’m just happy to have completed the course and survived!

Swimmers left in waves every 30 minutes, wearing different colouredhats. Our lot wore pink – particularly fetching on Andy and Ash. It waswith a mixture of inevitability and humour that I watched swimmerswho had started 30 and 60 minutes after me pass in droves. Everyrescue canoeist had a cheerful chat with me as I swam by (yes thatslow!). Was it cold? Too right!

The team included Andy Cox, Rhiannon Buck, Veronika Powell (whoalmost froze) and Ashley George. They all did it in under an hour. I’mvery proud of them!

Live export deaths Live animal exports have been temporarily suspended at the Port ofRamsgate after an incident in which 45 sheep died. After a lorry wasstopped at the port, 43 sheep had to be shot because of their condition.Whilst being taken from the lorry, six sheep fell into the water and two drowned.

One port after another has abandoned this despicable, long-distancetrade in live animals but Ipswich is now taking the trade abandoned by Ramsgate.

Hamish andDougal’slucky escapeWith your help – we did it!

Thanks to our generous, kind-hearted supportersand Hillside Animal Sanctuary, Highland steersHamish and Dougal have made their long journeyto freedom.

The two brothers had become entirely socialisedin their field at Cape Cornwall and their intendedslaughter was devastating to Viva! supportersHeidi Stephenson and Viva! Art for Animals artist,Jason Liosatos, who launched a campaign torescue the friendly duo.

Together we succeeded and a deluxe horse boxtravelled 442 miles through the night in August todeliver its utterly relaxed cargo to their permanenthome in Norfolk. After quarantine, Hamish andDougal joined a small herd of other Highlanders inan idyllic pasture shaded by bordering woodland.

Heidi accompanied the two throughout: “Sayinggoodbye was incredibly hard but may their days belong and happy, thanks to Viva!”

Red Tractor – Red FaceThree ads trumpeting the high welfare standardsof pork sold with the Red Tractor symbol havebeen banned by the Advertising StandardsAuthority (ASA). It was ruled that they could leadconsumers into thinking pig welfare in Britainwas better than it is. Now there’s a surprise!

Vegetarian for LifeThis important charity dedicates itself to improving life for oldergenerations. It does it by giving nutrition and catering advice, hasa list of vegetarian-friendly care homes, trains caterers and canoffer grants to vegetarians to help with independent living. It hasrecently produced a DVD for care home owners and their staff toencourage them to respect and cater for vegetarian and veganresidents. It includes great cookery demonstrations, health andnutrition advice and the heartfelt views of older veggiesthemselves. Theresearchers found thatcutting meat andanimal products out ofthe diet, or evenrestricting red meat to oneday a week, is moresignificant than buying allyour food from local sources.

It is difficult to predict whether thebloodshed will have started by the time youread this but the intention of bothGovernment and farmers is absolutelyclear – badgers must be exterminated.

There are numerous options open to theselarge institutions but with a grim single-mindedness, the only solution they promote totackle the spread of TB in cattle begins andends with the barrel of a gun. Deaf to science,deaf to expert opinion, deaf to reason: “Wewill exterminate, we will exterminate!”

Viva! has campaigned for badgers for almostfive years now – odd for a vegetarianorganisation you might think for no one eatsthem, despite the urgings of one fat cook,Clarissa Dixon Wright. But badgers and cattleare two sides of the same coin. Viva! campaignsagainst meat and dairy consumption byexposing the abject cruelty of modern animalfarming and nothing typifies this more than thedairy cow, who carries the excruciating burdenof producing vast amounts of milk whilstpregnant. The result is such exhaustion thatshe is sent to the slaughterhouse at around fiveyears old, disease-ridden and her immunesystem shot to pieces.

Badgers have become the scapegoat forthe failings of dairy farmers – and whatfailings they are! Last year, Viva! undercoverinvestigators filmed at Welsh markets andfound that biosecurity was not just ignoredbut treated with utter contempt. At onemarket, 97 per cent of people didn’t evenbother to dip their feet in the ‘obligatory’disinfectant foot baths.

However, it isn’t justWales that ignores prevention.News has just emerged that it isa similar story in England. AEuropean Commission inspectiondiscovered a catalogue of failures in themeasures that English farmers are supposedto follow to prevent their cattle spreading TBbetween herds.

There are delays in removing from the herdcattle who test positive for TB, an endemicfailure to carry out tests on time and a failureto follow the tests that are conducted. Thereport also criticised on-farm biosecurity andcleanliness as weak – failures that increasethe risk of cattle spreading TB to each other.

It gets worse. A Cork nominee for youngFarmer of the Year was recently fined £20,000for claiming compensation by injecting his 49cattle with slurry to get a false TB reaction.He was sentenced to three years but not forthe horrendous suffering he caused.

It’s impossible to know the full extent offraud but it is likely to be widespread. Itemerged last year that some British farmershad been illegally swapping cattle ear tags inorder to retain highly productive TB reactors(and risking passing the disease to other cows)whilst sacrificing healthy, low-producing cows.

Tightening measures on farms and atmarkets would reduce TB. Indeed, improvingcattle measures alone have seen a decreasein TB deaths in both England and Waleswithout killing a single badger. In light of this,Damian Carrington in The Guardian calls thecull ‘nonsensical’and echoes Lord Krebs –architect of the previous badger cull trials –who calls the plans ‘crazy’.

What can a sane person do in the face ofsuch moral bankruptcy? There is one answer.

We chose possibly the hardest nut tocrack and stuck at it for 15 years. Wewere determined to persuade or shamefootball boot manufacturers into droppingthe use of kangaroo leather formanufacturing their football boots. Canyou think of a more difficult task thanappealing to young, mostly male footballplayers on grounds of animal welfare?Well, we’ve done it!

Our campaign against the use ofkangaroo hides and meat is one of Viva!'slongest running and started back in 1995.At the turn of the millennium, success

stories tumbled oneover another assupermarkets fell likedominos after a wave ofViva! protests outsidestores, targetingcompanies one at a time.Once the biggest fell –Tesco – others almosttripped over themselves to pledge neveragain to sell kangaroo meat. No matterhow hard they had tried to spin it as greenand ethical, they could not justify backingan industry that beat to death hundreds ofthousands of baby joeys – and then binnedthem. And they knew it!

This bloodshed has plagued Australia’sOutback for decades and is the largestmassacre of wild land animals in theworld. Millions of adult kangaroos are shotevery year for meat and skin and anestimated 885,000 of their babies areeither decapitated, shot or beaten to death.

Official Australian figures show thatkangaroo numbers in the killing zoneshave dropped significantly. Viva! has longargued that the industry is cruel andunsustainable and the commercialisationof wildlife threatens the extinction of somespecies – to add to those that Australia hasalready exterminated. the world for wiping out entire species isnot an achievement they boast about!

Viva! has kept kangaroo meat off theshelves of all 1,500 UK supermarkets.When wholesalers Makro and Booker werefoolhardy enough to try and stock it,consumer action by us and our supporterssaw them drop it like a hot brick. Recently,Lidl tried the same thing and ourchallenge was again successful.

Encouraged by the AustralianGovernment, football boot manufacturersclaimed they had a right to slaughterwildlife, ignoring both Viva! and morality.Leader of the pack was Adidas, the world’sbiggest user of kangaroo leather. Theirflagship boot, the Predator, was avidlypromoted by sporting royalty, DavidBeckham. Undaunted, we kept pluggingaway at him and, in 2006, he told Adidas hewould no longer wear kangaroo leather.They made a synthetic version of the bootespecially for him. Respect, David, respect!

Despite this, Adidas continued withother kangaroo leather boots, as did Nikeand Puma. But we continued naming andshaming them and the football stars whowere paid to wear their products. Aconstant flow of articles in newspaperssuch as the Daily Mail, Independent andObserver kept the pressure on.

Last year, we reinvigorated our onlinecampaign and, with long-term allies, theAustralian Wildlife Protection Council,ensured that a new wave of complaints hitfootball boot manufacturers. And then…the first signs of success! Nike admittedthey were “...moving towards eradicatingthe use of kangaroo leather altogether.”We were delighted.

It was followed in 2011 by an admissionfrom the kangaroo killing industry thatAdidas and the other big manufacturershad “… moved away from using kangarooleather in response to public pressurefrom animal rights activists.” They meant

us and our allies!One of those allies was the Co-

operative’s Responsible Investment armwho contacted us at the beginning of thisyear. As major shareholders in both Adidasand Nike, they wanted our opinion andexpertise on the inherent cruelty andunsustainability of the kangaroo industry.

This was the tipping point and Adidascommitted to phasing out all but two percent of its use of kangaroo leather overthe next year. It is a phenomenal drop inconsumption and it goes without sayingthat we are now pursuing the remainingtwo per cent, demanding a switch tocruelty-free synthetics.

Just as encouragingly, Puma’s formerCEO, Jochen Zeitz, declared at the UN Rio20+Earth Summit in June that the footballboot manufacturing industry must moveaway from leather and embrace syntheticsfor an eco-friendly future. He is now chiefsustainability officer of the French luxurycompany, PPR, who own Puma. Anotherpowerful ally!

What does this mean for kangaroos inAustralia? Somewhere in the Outbackthere are ‘mobs’ of kangaroosand their young who,unknowingly, are alive andliving in their settled familygroups because you havefunded Viva!’s campaignagainst the vile kangarootrade. That in itself is reasonenough to celebrate.

The trade in Australia’swildlife is not over but we havewon an honourable battle thathas struck at its very heart.The kangaroo killing industryhas always said that it wasdependent upon theinternational trade in footballboots. That has now all butgone! However, we know they

will be scouring the world to try and dupeothers into filling the gap in their income,derived from the wholesale slaughter ofwild animals.

The long-suffering wild inhabitants of the Forest of Dean areonce again under attack by perhaps the most unlikely of foes –the Forestry Commission.

Viva! has joined forces with local activist group, Friends of theBoar, to try and persuade this quango to end their campaign ofpersecution. Having previously announced a moratorium onshooting the animals, the Forestry Commission now says itintends to kill 100 boars by January 2013.

It had agreed that the Forest of Dean could accommodatearound 400 boars but then decided that there were currently inexcess of 600 animals. This was reached without any scientificcount and is based on little more than guesswork. There are realfears that the true figure is just 200 or lower.

Far from being a nuisance, these gentle and inquisitiveanimals are both a boon to biosecurity and local tourism. Withour allies, we are calling for an end to the shooting of wild boarand have produced a special leaflet for local activists to raiseawareness and increase pressure on The Forestry Commissionto reconsider. It is time that the war on British wildlife ended.

Last issue we revealed shockingdetails of our undercoverinvestigation into the British dairygoat industry. It shattered thebelief many people have that thesuffering dairy cows enduredoesn’t afflict goats. The excellentnational press coverage ourinvestigation attracted has blownthis myth out of the water and as aconsequence, a prosecution forcruelty may result.Any dairy industry can only exist by

separating mothers from their youngin order to take all their milk. Thegoat industry tries to ignore this andpretend that it’s some kind ofthrowback to a bygone pastoral idyll.Judging by some packaging designs,you’d be forgiven for thinking thatthe milk comes from one nanny goatlovingly milked by hand by amilkmaid in a frilly bonnet. Nothingcould be further from the truth asour investigation discovered.Goats are now increasingly factory

farmed, with most large herds zero-grazed, meaning they never gooutside. In May 2012, we filmedundercover at Upper Enson Farm inStaffordshire – Britain’s largest goatherd where animals are allowed outsome of the time. They milk around1,800 goats for Delamere Dairiesand we filmed the routine mutilationof baby animals, dreadfully diseasedanimals and piles of corpses.It was the painful mutilations of

baby animals that struck a chordwith both the public and veterinaryexperts and it prompted the RoyalCollege of Veterinary Surgeons(RCVS) into action to look atthe ‘disbudding’ of babyanimals. They confirmedour claim that hornbuds should not beburnt out withoutpain relief norby unqualifiedstaff. “Only a

veterinary surgeon may undertakethe disbudding of goats and, due tothe nature of the procedure, shouldadminister anaesthetic.”The farmer himself admitted to

the Daily Mail that he was workingoutside Government welfareguidelines, his excuse being that tofollow them would beuneconomical. We were outragedand reported our findings, alongwith the damning footage, to boththe local Animal Health Office andTrading Standards and demandedaction. The latest response we haveis that “…the matter is currentlybeing investigated in accordancewith criminal proceedings.” We willof course bring you more newswhen we get it. A recent study usednew estimates of meat intakes in UK adults and cameto the conclusion that if the number of vegetariansdoubled – and the rest of the population decreased theirred and processed meat intake by more than half (2.5times), the rates of diabetes, heart disease andcolorectal cancer would drop significantly and thereduction in greenhouse gas emissions across the UKpopulation would be 27.8 million tonnes/year.

Iron mythOne of the most repeated myths about plant-based diets (and the mostannoying) is: ‘If you don’t eat meat, you won’t get enough iron and you’llbecome anaemic!’A new study confirms that vegetarians eating a healthy, varied diet are

not at any greater risk of iron deficiency anaemia than meat-eaters! It alsoshows, contrary to popular belief, that meat-eaters get only a small amountof their iron from meat – less than just 20 per cent. Almost a half of theiriron intake (45 per cent) comes from cereals and cereal products.A diet rich in wholegrain cereals and breads (many of which are now

enriched with iron), beans and other pulses, dark green leafy vegetables,dried fruits and nuts and seeds provides all the iron you need. Fresh fruitsand vegetables also contain lots of vitamin C, which increases ironabsorption so it’s an ideal combination!

High fat, low fat?A large-scale, 25-year study of the Swedish population has produced someinteresting results. Beginning in 1986, the study found that in its first sevenyears, fat intake and cholesterol levels of the participants slightlydecreased, in line with the dietary recommendations for reduced fat intake.However, from 2004 on, a significant change was observed: the intake of fat,especially animal fat, increased, and so did the cholesterol levels.This change was linked to the rise in popularity of high-fat, low-carbohydrate, Atkins-style diets which were, and still are,promoted for quick weight-loss.The popularity of these diets reached such high levels that

there was even a butter shortage during the last years ofthe study. Despite this ‘diet’, the weight of participantssteadily increased. Scientists concluded that themarked rise in cholesterol levels was clearly linkedto diet and warned that, although for some peopleweight-loss was achieved in the short-term, it was notsustainable and that high-fat, low-carbohydrate diets clearlyincreased the risk of heart disease and diabetes.

To establish whether it is safe for women with breast cancer toconsume soya, almost 10,000 women were followed for severalyears and their diets analysed. To cover the possibility thatcultural and lifestyle differences might influence theresults, the study included North American andChinese women.The results of this largest study to date on soya and

breast cancer showed that for all women who havebeen diagnosed with breast cancer, soya slightlydecreases the risk of death and it significantlydecreases the risk of developing a new tumour. Theseresults confirm many others – that soya is beneficialto health and perfectly safe even for breast cancer patients.

Cute picsmake youwork harder!A unique piece of research from Japan shows that weare more productive and better able to focus afterlooking at pictures of cute animals, such as kittens and puppies.The researchers tested groups of volunteers in

manual and intellectual tasks before and after showingthem pictures of baby animals, adult animals or food.The results showed an incredible 44 per centimprovement in manual and 16 per cent improvement inintellectual ability after the volunteers looked at imagesof kittens and puppies. Pictures of adult animals andfood had only a small positive effect.The reason why people performed better in tasks

requiring focused attention was put down to the cuteimages narrowing attention focus because of people’spositive emotions, which improved their ability toprocess information. It was also suggested that cutepictures may be used to positively influence behaviourin specific situations, such as driving and office work!

after 140 gruelling kilometres to grabsilver, just metres behind Holland’sMarianne Voss.The 23-year-old vegetarian went into the

Olympic history book and cut the legs offsome ill-informed nutritionists who stillcontend that a meat-free diet is not thestuff of sporting victory:“Despite the fact I was breaking school

records as a runner, people stillquestioned my diet’s ability to make mestrong. I spent six months last yeartraining with some of Kenya’s greatestlong-distance runners who live mostly ona diet of rice, beans ugali (a maize flourdough) and green vegetables and their listof gold medals is almost endless. “I stopped eating meat when I was 10

because I could never get my head aroundeating a corpse. I would have done itsooner but my parents made me eateverything on my plate.”

Scott of theSpartathlonIf the thought ofrunning a 26-milemarathon makes youreyes water, read no

further! Scott Jurek is a championultramarathon runner who wins 100-mile

races – and he does themregularly, on top of training

eight hours a day. And if youthink that’s wimpy, then

consider this – he won theSpartathlon from Athens to Sparta, a

mere 153 miles. And he does it all on avegan diet. This one-time fast food addict

discovered that heart disease, strokes andmany cancers were linked to the Westerndiet – his diet – and change happened.Five months after becoming vegan hefaced the toughest race of his life, theWestern States 100 Mile Endurance.“I could hear people’s comments all

along the route: ‘The tall guy went out toofast – typical rookie mistake!’ ‘ThatMinnesotan flat-lander will soon collapse!’‘When the champ catches him, he’s toast!’In fact, I led the entire race from start tofinish and won, setting a course record.Six other wins followed, including the 135-mile Badwater Ultramarathon, run in 125degree heat through Death Valley. I brokethat record, too!“Being a vegan isn’t a matter of

subtraction but addition. I discovered foodsI had never known existed and experiencedflavours and textures I had neverimagined. I think of a plant-based diet asthe cheapest health insurance around.”I’m just relieved that Scott’s

Ghost, and it is a fascinating read; funny,sad and uplifting. He talks candidly aboutplaying world-class sport as a vegetarian,his off-court relationship with his father(his coach) and finding the will to carry onwhen his mother died of cancer.

Peter theGreatOkay, it’s not asstrenuous as running ahundred miles nor asbrutal as world-class

squash but anyone who’s been rivetedwhen watching snooker at the Cruciblewill know that extraordinarily finejudgements, wafer thin accuracy andabsolute concentration are involved.

Despite its few naughty boys andboozers, snooker is a sport for highly-professional and committed players, maleand female, and success depends upongood health. No one typifies this morethan Peter Ebdon, renowned for hisremarkably focused and determined styleof play.A Londoner - Islington – this 42-year-

old master has notched up both UK andworld titles. Playing in his 21st consecutiveWorld Championship (one more thanRonnie O’Sullivan), he recently revealed toBBC Sport that he had become vegan.Although only five months old, he said hisnew dietary regime had made a hugedifference to him.“My concentration and focus is good and

my diet is a big part of that. I’ve also beenworking on my fitness and everything’scoming together on the table.” Peter shot to fame when, as a new-

comer, he beat the legendary Steve Davis10-4 in the 1992 World Championship.

QueenJulianaOkay, this one takes abit of believing! Thereare women whocompete for 24-hours on

a mud-filled obstacle course inbelow–freezing temperatures to win thetitle of The World’s Toughest Mudder. Thisyear the crown went to Juliana Sproles,who can now legitimately claim to be theworld’s toughest woman. And she’s vegan!Tough Mudder courses are up to 12

miles long and are utterly gruelling, with20 to 30 muscle testing obstaclesdesigned by British special forces and theyare designed to test all-round strength,stamina, mental grit and camaraderie. The top five per cent are eligible to goforward and compete in the World’sToughest Mudder final – and that’s whereJuliana triumphed.The 42-year-old mother of two teenage

girls started the race with 1,000 othercontestants of both sexes, including someof the toughest military on Earth. She beatall the women and all but two of the menin an extraordinary feat of endurance.

“It was gnarly,” Juliana said. "Themud mile went on forever, with eight-foot walls and slippery beams. Freezingweather caused the ice to freeze aquarter inch thick by the early morning.We had to break through it with ourhands and feet, and then slog through itand keep moving forward..."

Lest We ForgetThese extraordinary people are just thelatest veggie superheroes, but therehave been others. Pavo Nurmi, the‘Flying Finn,’ won nine Olympic goldmedals for long distance running (1924-1928). Murray Rose, the Australian‘Seaweed Streak’ was a lifelong veganand won four gold swimming medals(1956-1960). Edwin (Ed) Moses won twoOlympic 400m gold medals and 122successive races (1977-1987). CarlLewis won many Olympic golds as aveggie but after turning vegan hewon his ’greatest ever race’ –100m world record at the ageof 30 (1984-1991). MartinaNavratilova won 18 Grand

Slams and is a very seriousveggie. She is considered one of the

greatest tennis players in history.

In order to grow up big and strong withhealthy bones you need to gobble up milkand lots of dairy products, right? So whydo countries that consume the most dairyhave the highest rates of osteoporosisand fragile bones? Viva! Health’s new‘Break Free’ campaign destroys themyths and shows what really matters forhealthy bones.Bones grow until we’re about 20

years old and then stop – butthey don’t then become just alifeless structure supporting ourbody. Bones wear and aredamaged so they need to becontinually repaired. Wornbits are cleared away andspecial cells (osteoblasts) move into thegap and build new bone aroundthemselves. Hidden inside bones’ centralcavities is bone marrow – very importantbecause it’s where blood cells are made.Bones support and protect vital organs,

anchor your muscles and store mineralssuch as calcium and phosphorus. Theamount of calcium in your bones is tightlylinked to calcium levels in your blood andexchanges take place between the twowhen the levels in your blood are not right.This mechanism is influenced byhormones but it’s diet that plays the majorrole. Ninety-nine per cent of your body'scalcium is in your skeleton and it followsthat any effect of your diet, medication orlifestyle on your body’s calcium balancewill also affect your bones. The human body is a finely-tuned

organism that works best under certainconditions and is very sensitive to anychanges in those conditions. One of themost important characteristics is a stablebalance between acid and alkalis in theblood. Everything we eat or drink is eitheracid or alkali forming. When it’s acid that’sformed, the body needs to employ one ofits buffer systems – namely the skeleton –to neutralise the acid by releasing calcium.Both calcium and acid are then excreted inurine and only a fraction of the used

calcium can be returned to the bones.Some foods produce a lot of acid when

digested and one of the biggest is animalprotein because of its high sulphur contentwhich is turned into sulphuric acid in thebody. All animal products are similarlyacidifying, flooding the body with acid, whichcan cause a permanent state of acid overloadand this in turn can lead to numerous healthproblems. Sugary foods also generate largequantities of acid while most cereal productsare mild acid producers.Potassium and magnesium are mainly

contained in plant foods and, together with

calcium, determine alkalineload. It follows that mostvegetables, many fruits(including citrus) and nuts andseeds – such as almonds, Brazilnuts, sesame seeds and flaxseed,lentils, butter beans and tofu areall alkali-producing foods.Some grains, such as millet,quinoa, spelt, wild rice andbuckwheat are also alkalisingor are in the ‘neutral’ zone.It is almost impossible to eat only

alkaline foods and, anyway, you do needsome acidifying foods to maintain a healthybalance. The ideal ratio is around 70:30 ofalkalising foods to acidic-producing foods.It means you can still have biscuits, coffeeor crumpets alongside your bone-healthy,alkalising foods but it’s best to steer awayfrom animal products. We’re told constantly that dairy products

contain calcium but the other part of theequation is never mentioned – they alsocontain animal protein and the acid thiscreates outweighs the alkalis formed bythe calcium. The overall effect is to acidifyyour body and as a result it uses up morecalcium to neutralise the acid than thedairy products can provide. There is anoverwhelming amount of scientific datashowing that dairy products do not offerany benefit for bones and the number ofexperts now advising you not to consumedairy is growing rapidly.Of course we need calcium to have healthy

bones but most of all we need the right acid-alkali balance and, as many studies show,diets based on plants are not only morealkalising than meat diets can ever be butthey also provide the whole ‘package’ ofgoodies needed for healthy bones. It includesvitamins A, C, K and the B group as well asimportant minerals – calcium (enough forour daily needs), magnesium, potassium,selenium, boron, iron, copper, zinc, etc.Recent research also identified the

importance of isoflavones – naturalsubstances found in soya. They seem tohave a significant beneficialeffect on bonehealth, slowingdown the rate ofloss andstimulating newgrowth. So, a healthy,

plant-based dietis essential forbuilding andmaintaininghealthy bonesbut there’sanother factorabsolutelyessential for bone strength – exercise.Bone adapts to the weight and pressurethat’s applied to it and it needs thisstimulation to stay strong. There’s no needto sweat your socks off but moderate,weight-bearing exercise is a must. Thismeans walking, carrying shopping bags,dancing, gardening, ball games, jogging,yoga, weight-lifting and other simplethings. There are, however, a couple ofactivities that, although being good foryour overall health, don’t stimulate bonesthat much: swimming and cycling.If possible, choose an activity you can do

outdoors because your bones also needvitamin D, which is manufactured in theskin when it’s exposed to daylight. You need

at least 15 minutes a day outside withoutsunscreen for your skin to do its stuff andmake enough of this vitamin. Many foodsare now enriched with vitamin D, such asmargarines, cereals, soya milk, but it’salways best to get it the natural way.Osteoporosis – or brittle bone disease –

affects millions of people around theworld. In the UK alone, almost threemillion people have it. Osteoporosis hastwo main characteristics: low bone densityand deterioration of bone structure.Together, these result in fragile bones andan increased risk of fractures. It’sestimated that in the UK, one in twowomen and one in five men will suffer afracture after the age of 50.The UK is one of the countries with the

highest rates of osteoporosis and also oneof the biggest consumers of dairy andother animal products. Even the WorldHealth Organisation’s recommendationsfor preventing osteoporosis acknowledgethis ‘calcium paradox’ as it calls it – thatcountries with the highest intake of dairyhave the highest rates of osteoporosis. A number of studies show that calcium

and vitamin D supplements,oftenrecommendedfor better bonehealth, are noteffective inpreventingfractures.Osteoporosis isnot a diseasecaused by a lackof calcium,therefore simplyadding morecalcium intoyour system

won’t help. Science is rapidly coming to theconclusion that a diet high in alkalisingplant foods, coupled with regular weight-bearing exercise, is the way to growhealthy bones and preserve them.Forget the white milk moustache – it

Chocolate &Brandy Truffle TortePreparation time 20 minutes plus overnight chilling timeNot only is this sophisticated little number a piece ofchocolate heaven, it’s also incredibly quick and easy.

� Cooking oil or low-cal spray to grease cake tin� 5 tbsp liquid glucose (eg Supercook brand)� 5 tbsp brandy� 450g/1lb vegan plain chocolate (Sainsbury’s cooking chocolate is vegan, good quality andreasonably priced)

� 250ml/½ pint tub Alpro soya cream (1 small tub)� 75g/3oz regular Hob Nobs or similar oaty vegan biscuits

� Sieved cocoa powder to decorate� Optional: raspberries or other berry fruit to garnish

1 Base line a 23cm/9in cake tin with greaseproof paperand grease the sides with a little oil or a few squirts oflow-cal spray.2 Sprinkle the crushed biscuits over the base.3 Use a warm spoon to measure the glucose syrup.4 Melt chocolate, brandy and glucose in a bowl over apan of barely simmering water.5 Remove from heat and gently stir in cream. Pour intotin and chill overnight.6 Turn out onto a large plate and dust with cocoa powder.7 Garnish with fruit if using. Good served with vegan icecream such as Swedish Glace or a fruit coulis.

Sautéed ButternutSquash with OliveTapenade & Cannellini BeansPreparation time 30 minutesThis is a deliciously quick way of using squash or pumpkin. Much quicker thanroasting or baking, you still get that rich flavour. Or try using sweet potato,which also works well. Serve with a large salad and some crusty bread.

� 1 medium butternut squash or pumpkin. You will need 500-600g/18-21ozpeeled and seeded squash, cut into medium chunks

� 60g/2oz mixed green and black pitted olives� 2 tbsp olive oil� 2 tbsp finely chopped parsley – any type� Half a tin of cannellini beans, rinsed and drained OR 120g/4oz home-cooked� 1 lemon, zested� Black pepper� 1 clove garlic (or more if preferred) and 1 tbsp olive oil OR a few squirtsof oil spray

1 Steam the squash chunks until they are tender – approximately 15-25minutes.2 Meanwhile, make the tapenade: chop the olives and parsley and mixthoroughly with the 2 tbsp olive oil, cannellini beans and lemon zest.3 In a large frying pan, heat the 1 tbsp olive oil or oil spray. Cook thecrushed garlic gently until it starts to turn translucent then toss the hotcooked squash in the mix.4 Mix in the olive tapenade with the squash, add lots of freshly ground blackpepper and serve hot.

Artichoke & Wild Mushroom StrudelServes 6. 50 minutes total preparation and cooking time. This adaptable recipe can be made with cooked, peeled chestnuts(sold in handy vacuum packs) instead of mushrooms – see below.

1 Heat the olive oil and sauté the finely chopped shallots untiltranslucent. Add the garlic and mushrooms and season with saltand pepper.

2 Cook over a medium heat until the mushrooms release theirliquid. Continue cooking until the liquid has evaporated. If usingchestnuts, chop in half and sauté for a minute or two. 3 Mash the tofu roughly with a fork and add the soy sauce, groundwalnuts, chopped artichokes, tarragon and the cookedmushrooms/chestnuts. Combine well and season with salt andpepper. Divide roughly into six portions and set aside to cool.4 Preheat the oven to 180˚C/350˚F/Gas Mark 4 and line a bakingtray with non-stick baking paper.5 To make individual strudels use two sheets of filo pastry foreach strudel. Remove only two sheets at a time from the pack andkeep the rest covered to stop the pastry from drying out.6 Place one sheet on a flat surface with the short side facing youand brush lightly with olive oil. Lay the second sheet on top andbrush with oil too. Now, fold the bottom third of the pastryupwards. Place one portion of the filling on this doubled up third,leaving a 5 cm/2 inch border all around.7 Fold the left and right sides in to encase the filling and startrolling the strudel up (like a spring roll). Place the strudel seamside down on the prepared baking tray. Continue with theremaining five strudels and brush the tops lightly with oil.8 Bake for 30 minutes or until golden brown. Just before thestrudels are ready for serving, squeeze the juice from the tangerinesand combine it in a small pot with the cranberry sauce. Heat over amedium heat until warmed through and serve with the strudels.

I’m tired of people whose privilegededucations have given them an over-abundance of confidence but a dearth ofvision and who are quite happy to distortscience to serve their own political ends.There’s a barrow load of examples and

in one way or another they are all

interrelated. But let’s start with the badgercull (see page 9). The Government claimsit is relying on scientific research yet SirJohn Krebs, the eminent scientist whoprovided that research, says the cull is‘crazy,’ as do all the leading animal healthscientists in Britain. Chief scientific

advisor designate, Sir Mark Walport,admits the decision is ‘political’.Translated, that means it is being done tobuy farmers’ votes. But there’s another dimension to this

other than wanton cruelty and that is thedeteriorating health of the nation asdeadly diseases reach epidemicproportions. The gateway to many of thesediseases is obesity and it’s rarely out ofthe headlines as children get fatter andfatter – the fattest of all being those whoconsume the most meat and dairyproducts. The science is again crystalclear – animal products are at the heart ofthe nation’s worsening health statistics.So thank heavens for the Olympics and

its message of healthy athleticism to ourkids (see page 16). And thanks also to itsofficial sponsors – Coca Cola, McDonalds,and Cadbury – for being allowed tocompletely undermine that message withtheir sugar, fat, milk and animal proteinmarketing messages. Maintaining a freemarket it’s called!Even the poor old bee is being sacrificed

to the same self-interested ideology. Asthe need to ramp up fodder productiongrows, so intensive agriculture is offeredas the only solution, with all its artificialfertilisers and pesticides, including thenew boys on the block, neonicotinoids.Introduced in 1990 with a fanfare, these

‘well-tested’ nerve toxins became instantlypopular. Sadly, that testing was found tobe ‘shoddy and unreliable’. Now, all 267species of wild bee – vital to pollination –are collapsing, not just because they’rekilled outright but because their navigationsystems become scrambled. Othergovernments have reacted and bannedneonicotinoids but not ours – insufficientevidence! Apparently, we’ve all been living the

high life and running the country into debt(I think someone else had my share of thegood times). It seems it wasn’t thebankers who were responsible at all butthe poorest amongst us because it is theywho are being punished the most severelywhilst bankers continue their casinocapitalism exactly as before. They werebailed out to the tune of over one trilliondollars but have paid back almost nothingand exhibit not even a glimmer ofcontrition.People are on the streets pleading for

relief but ‘no’ say the ‘markets’ (the same‘investment’ bankers who caused themess), you must suffer more, there’s nocash to spare – that is, of course, apartfrom the £40 billion given (mostly) tolivestock farmers across Europe everyyear so they can keep prices low for thosesame foods that cause disease.Those in the UK who do best from this

divi-up don’t immediately strike you asneedy – the Queen, Prince Charles, the

Duke of Westminster, the Duke ofBuccleuch…. But just to ensure they don’thave to dash along to Ramsden’s to pawntheir tiaras, they’ve also been given a taxcut, worth £40,000 annually to the highestearners, which certainly includes thisquartet.Like a nasty smell at a party that no one

wants to own up to, there is silence aboutland and how we use it. Meanwhile,countries everywhere continue to growfood for use as biofuel and top of the heapis the US, which devotes 40 per cent of itscorn output to it. And, surprise, surprise,its corn exports have dropped by 20 percent alongside headlines predicting aglobal food shortage – the poorest againbeing those who will suffer most.But that’s okay because there is always

the $1 billion US Food Aid Programme,except that two-thirds of it goes not tocountries to find their own solutions butdirectly to three highly-profitable andpolitically powerful US-based grainmultinationals – ADM, Cargill and Bunge –also up to their eyes in deforesting theAmazon. Of this $1 billion, only 40 per centis spent on providing food, the other 60 percent goes on freight and ‘fees’. Nice workif you can get it!Whilst multinationals and their

governments shed crocodile tears for thestarving, they are busy buying up tens ofmillions of hectares of land in developing

countries, from which millions ofindigenous people will be evicted. Everyland purchase involves valuable watersources and both will mainly be used forlivestock production. A new report,Squeezing Africa Dry, maintains that thecontinent is heading for hydrologicalsuicide as people’s needs take secondplace to feeding farmed animals. In a world of intelligent people, the

debate would be about how best to use theworld’s agricultural land rather thanallowing this neoimperialist rampage.First under the microscope would go the70 per cent devoted to livestock. Likeancient alchemists who tried to turn leadinto gold, multinationals again pretendthey have the answer. It is the geneticallymodified organisms (GMOs) they havespent $billions developing. The safe andwell-tested way to boost output!

Of course they have a vested interest –not in reducing livestock but in expandingit because much of their profit comes fromthe fertilisers, pesticides and drugs thatkeep it going; and most of the remaindercomes from drugs to relieve the humandiseases that result from meat and dairyconsumption.Some governments have responded

eagerly and the US is now saturated withgenetically engineered plants but asresearch is starting to show, all is not wellin the GMO garden.Genetic scientists at London’s King

College (GMO Truths and Myths) havedelivered the damning verdict that GMcrop technology is fundamentally unsoundand poses scientifically proved risks tohuman and animal health. Pesticide usehas increased and is becoming ever-moretoxic and other pests have taken the placeof those being targeted. Whoops-a-daisy,they never told us that – but then theywouldn’t because “the industry’s claimsare highly exaggerated!”Some plants have been engineered to

produce a toxin from a particularbacterium (Bacillus thuringiensis) and arereferred to as Bt plants. The pesticide theycontain is systemic – part of the plant’sstructure and remains there whenharvested or eaten. Of course Monsanto is involved, with its

genetically modified Bt corn and they

promised that the pesticide would beentirely destroyed by the human digestivetract and not enter people’s blood stream.Two years ago, the American Academy of

Environmental Medicine (AAEM) called forphysicians to prescribe diets to all patientswhich were FREE FROM these GMO foods.They said: “Several studies indicate serioushealth risks, including infertility, immuneproblems, accelerated aging, insulinregulation and changes in major organsand the gastrointestinal system.” Monsanto poo-pooed the science and

were believed. But in 2011, doctors atSherbrooke University Hospital in Quebecfound Bt-toxin in the blood of 93 per centof the pregnant women they tested, in 80per cent of umbilical blood in their babiesand in 67 per cent of non-pregnant

In the UK, around 10million people havearthritis. For most itis the commonwear and tearvariety calledosteoarthritis.About half amillion, however, have

the more severe rheumatoid arthritis. Itstrikes people mainly between the ages of35 and 50 and is an autoimmune disease inwhich the body's defence mechanisms gointo action when there's no threat,essentially attacking their own body’s jointscausing pain and swelling. It can lead to areduction in movement and the breakdownof bone and cartilage.

Mirror ImageRheumatoid arthritis is usually seen in theperipheral joints – hands, elbows, kneesand sometimes the feet. It is systemic sothe distribution is usually symmetrical – ifyou have it on your right side, you willusually have it on the left side, too, in thesame joints. You have probably seensomeone who has swollen and misshapenjoints that do not bend properly and thesesevere changes are often the result ofrheumatoid arthritis (RA).

According to the Arthritis FoundationUSA, the cause of what triggers RA is not

yet known. They say most scientistsagree that a combination ofgenetic and environmental factorsare responsible. Researchershave identified genetic markersthat can increase someone’slikelihood of developing the diseasetenfold. These genes are associatedwith the immune system, chronic

inflammation or the development andprogression of RA. But not all people

with these genes develop rheumatoidarthritis and not all people with thedisease have these genes. Be reassuredthat if one family member develops the

disease the risk to others in the familyis small.

The Foundation alsoexplains that researchersare investigatinginfectious agents, suchas bacteria or viruses,which may trigger thedisease in someonewith a geneticpropensity. Othersuspects includefemale hormones (70per cent of peoplewith RA are women)and the body’s

response to stressfulevents such as physical

or emotional trauma.Smoking may also play a role

– it not only boosts the risk in those with aspecific gene but can also increaseseverity of the disease and reduce theeffectiveness of treatment.

However, what they don’t explain – andthis is an all too familiar story withmedical charities across the world – is theimportant link between rheumatoidarthritis and diet in many people.

T. Colin Campbell is ProfessorEmeritus of Nutritional Biochemistry atCornell University, USA, author of morethan 300 research papers and co-authorof The China Study (2004), one ofAmerica’s best-selling books about theimpact of diet on our health. His legacy,the China Project, is the mostcomprehensive study of health andnutrition ever conducted. ProfessorCampbell explains that rheumatoidarthritis is lower in some countries thanothers and it appears that diet is a majorinfluencing factor.

He explains that in cultures whererelatively few animal products are eaten,such as parts of Africa, Japan and China,there is a much lower incidence of allkinds of arthritis. However, when thesepeople move to a city or country with ahigh meat and dairy diet which they thenadopt, their incidence of arthritisincreases dramatically. That is a clearindication that the Western diet is involvedin the development of arthritis. The twobiggest dietary culprits seem to be animalfat and animal protein.

Case Studyby Juliet Gellatley, BSc, Dip CNM

In 2012, Carol Coney (58), of Lincoln, consulted me because shehad suffered from rheumatoid arthritis for 14 years. She hadbeen a vegetarian – almost vegan – for over 20 years andbelieved that her RA was triggered by severe stress.Carol suffered pain, swelling and stiffness of her joints, with

some joint deformation. She couldn’t walk without discomfort orpain because her feet were damaged by the disease.I advised Carol to follow a four-week, anti-arthritis diet which

involved eating pain-safe foods such as brown rice, certaincooked or dried fruits, cooked vegetables, essential fatty acids(ground flax seed) and plenty of still water plus small amountsof any foods not on the worst offenders list. At the same time, Iadvised her to avoid the known worst offenders for encouraginginflammation – all dairy products, corn, meat and fish (not aproblem in her case!), wheat and all wheat products, eggs,citrus fruits, potatoes, tomatoes, nuts, coffee and bananas.I also suggested Carol have a half to one teaspoon of powdered

ginger daily because of its astonishing anti-inflammatory powers.After four weeks Carol’s symptoms improved dramatically and Iasked her to find out which foods triggered her RA. To do this,she reintroduced every two days the foods she had eliminated,

starting with the leastlikely trigger, to see if anyof her symptoms flared up.Carol was the perfect

client and meticulously dideverything I asked of her.She reintroduced foodssuch as tomatoes andpotatoes and discoveredshe didn’t feel as good aswhen she was on the anti-arthritis diet and so shereturned to it.Carol was excited to tell me of her extraordinary and swift

progress: “It is like a miracle. I can walk normally! The generalgnawing pain I felt with arthritis is not there. I am no longertaking pain killers or anti-inflammatories, except the anti-arthritis drugs given by the hospital.”The most gratifying words I’ve heard in a long time were:“I haven’t felt this good in 14 years. My pain-safe vegan diet

has given me back my life.”

Make no mistake, if Viva! and other animal groups had not risenup in protest – with your backing and the leadership of BrianMay – hired guns would now be killing badgers inGloucestershire and Somerset and claiming their (reputedly)£1,000 per head bounty.

But why would the government try to ignore an avalanche ofscientific opinion, overwhelming public protest and morality inorder to kill badgers? Welcome to the world of dirty politics! Ruralareas overwhelmingly vote Conservative and the farmers’ lobby isextraordinarily powerful. They angrily demanded a ‘cull’ because itwas simpler than facing their own failings and the Governmenttried to oblige them. The unspoken quid pro quo was theircontinued support in the polls.

In record time, we raised 160,000 signatures to demand aparliamentary debate on the subject, something which had nevertaken place. We were, however, warned that the millionaireleather baron who was driving the ‘cull’ forward – Owen PatersonMP, Minister for Food and Rural Affairs – was blind to any courseof action other than killing. “All he can say on the subject is ‘kill,kill, kill,’” a parliamentary insider told us.

Again you might ask, why? Because any minister who can forcea policy through against the odds wins themselves a reputation asa big hitter and promotion is sure to follow. A product ofCambridge, Mr Paterson is not stupid and must have read therunes (and the science) but was, it seems, prepared to strong-arm the ‘cull’ through in order to build his career on the back ofdead badgers.

On October 19, we heard rumours that the ‘cull’ was to bedropped or postponed as Mr Paterson called a press conferenceand then cancelled it: then reinstated it but cancelled it yet again– all on the same day. The reason became blindingly obviouswhen millionaire chief whip Andrew ‘Thrasher’ Mitchellannounced his resignation. Two u-turns in the same day was toomuch to bear.

On October 23, Mr Paterson did what he had intended to do five

days earlier and announced the ‘cull’ would be postponed untilJune, 2013, for logistical reasons. Why the sudden about face?Because the debate we had demanded was to take place two dayslater on October 25 and the message was the Government wouldlose. Although not bound by the vote, such a moral slap down withthe killing policy still in place would have hit the headlines big time;postpone it as a spoiler and defeat becomes a lesser news story.

And it was a defeat – a massive defeat! For the cull 28 votes;against 147. Viva! Campaigns Manager, Justin Kerswell, was inthe House to hear it all and members reported to him that theMinister left the debate after 20 minutes declaring: “I’m not goingto listen to any more of this!”

Those few MPs supporting the slaughter spoke at length offarmers crying into their milk over the loss of their cows to TBand, like drowning people clutching at straws, referred to the‘scientific report’ of former chief scientific officer, Sir David King.

Following the 10-year-long, £50 million Krebs study of badger‘culling’, which showed that it wouldn’t work, the then LabourGovernment got King to compile his own report to give them adifferent answer because they didn’t want to infuriate thefarmers either. King quickly rounded up a handful of pliablescientists and within days had cobbled together a report thatcontradicted Krebs, was scientifically threadbare, was not peerreviewed and never published. And it is that which theGovernment and ‘cull’ backers rely upon. Another bit of murkypolitics for which we can thank Mr Blair.

The really important element in all this is that despite darkpolitical arts, cynicism and self-interest, we beat them. We havemade a little bit of history and prevented a massacre of innocentwildlife. Will the Government return to the cull in June or wastheir postponement just a fig leaf to cover a humiliating defeat?We don’t know. We trust no one so keep the pressure on, keepdelivering our door dropper leaflets and be prepared to be calledback into action. Living conditions for India’s animals aretough. Most live on the streets, are kepton a short rope or are worked extremelyhard. The scale of need is enormous yetone extraordinary sanctuary takes in anyanimal, big or small, do all they can tosave their lives and gives them a second chance.

Last September, my husband Dave and Ispent a week helping in a sanctuary nearthe city of Udaipur in Rajasthan, India.Founded 10 years ago by the Abrams, anAmerican family, Animal AidUnlimited has become a vitalcentre with a vet and rescue vansready to save lives 24/7.

They do an amazing job on verylittle money – and without an X-ray machine or ultrasoundscanner, which they can’t afford.Life is a constant struggle forsurvival, with the team called outmany times a day to rescuecritically injured animals.

Road accidents are the majorcause of serious injury for streetdogs, along with fight woundsthat often become infected andinfested with maggots. Mange isalso a big problem and dogs whohave it need to be kept inquarantine until they’re healthyagain. Seeing dogs recovering fromoperations or those who have been leftsemi-paralysed is incredibly moving.

Adoption is not an option as it’s notcommon to have a pet dog in India. As aresult, staff have to make difficultdecisions, assessing which dogs are fitenough to be released back into the areawhere they were rescued and those whoare so handicapped that they need tobecome permanent residents.

Virtually every dog you meet at AnimalAid Unlimited has been seriously injuredor is ill and are either recovering orpermanently disabled. We spent a lot of

time giving one-to-oneattention to these dogs,grooming, stroking and walking. You watch newcases being treated andquietly ‘pray’ that they make it through.

Donkeys and cows are alsovictims of traffic accidents butmany arrive at the sanctuaryas a result of humanexploitation. Donkeys are

made to work extraordinarily hard, pullingheavily-loaded carts, resulting indeformed legs or even amputations.Extremely shy at first, once you startgrooming them their fears seem to melt away.

Although considered sacred, life forcows isn’t any easier. They either roam thestreets – ingesting plastic as theyscavenge for food – or they are kept on ashort rope, developing hoof deformities.Every cow and calf I met in the sanctuaryhad its own charming personality –although all the calves wanted to exfoliateyour skin with their sandpaper tongues.

There are a surprising numberof street pigs in Rajasthan andalthough not that often, somefind their way to the sanctuarydue to injuries or mistreatment.Pigs and all the other biganimals who make it to thesanctuary usually havepermanent disabilities or simply

can’t be returned to their owners, so itbecomes their home for life. Watching theanimals learning to walk after anamputation is heartbreaking as iswitnessing death. Tears werecommonplace throughout our stay. Staffcan’t save every animal but they do allthey can and I will always be grateful forthat. Beware meat and dairyAlan Goldhamer is an osteopathicphysician, Jennifer Morano a chiropracticdoctor and together they founded theTrueNorth Health Education Center inCalifornia which has had remarkablesuccess in treating people with RA. Theyexplain that any foreign protein that entersthe body is called an antigen. Our immunesystem manufactures antibodies to fightthese invading substances andantibody/antigen complexes are formed.The invaders can be viruses, bacteria or

food proteins and the body’s antibodiesfight these antigens by attaching to themand then clumping many together to formcomplexes. These complexes are usuallyeliminated from the body by the immunesystem. But in some people this doesn’thappen and the complexes become lodgedin various tissues around the body wherethey cause inflammation, much like asplinter. When they lodge in joints, pain,swelling and redness results.Dr Goldhamer explains how diet can be

involved. When we eat, our digestive systembreaks the food down into smaller andsmaller particles. In most people theparticles have to be very, very small – downto their basic components – before they canget from the digestive tract into the bodyproper. In other people, however, proteinscan pass through the gut at an earlierstage, when still quite large and complex.This process is called ‘gut leakage.’“When these larger proteins get into the

body, they are perceived as antigens(foreign invaders) the body attacks, tryingto eliminate them. Eating a high-proteindiet, especially one containing animalproducts, may make those people whohave a genetic tendency to allow largerparticles into their bodies, moresusceptible to arthritis.”Another way dairy may

trigger RA in some peopleis through what’s called‘molecular mimicry.’Scientists have found thatantibodies which weremeant to fight an invadingprotein, in some patientsattack their own jointtissues because they lookvery like the invader. Aprotein particle ofcows’ milk (bovinealbumin) is the sameas that found inhuman joints.

Vegan pain reliefUnfortunately, arthritis of all types has apoor prognosis under medical treatment.There is no cure for any type and medicaltreatment consists mainly of trying torelieve pain. However, new attitudes toarthritis can lead to reducing – andsometimes eliminating – pain.TrueNorth HealthCenter has seen a

reduction in both pain and symptoms ofmany people with both osteo andrheumatoid arthritis after changing theirdiets. If joint deformities have alreadyhappened, diet will not reverse them butpain can still be reduced through theeffect of diet on reducing inflammation.The number of people who benefit from a

change in diet varies depending on theresearch you read. Food sensitivities show upin 20 to 60 per cent of sufferers. Vegan dietsassist, and sometimes massively benefit, astaggering half of arthritis patients.There are several important studies that

examine the impact of a vegan diet on painin RA patients. Dr John McDougall et al ofSt Helena Hospital, California, authoredone of them. He gave 24 meat and dairyconsumers, with moderate to severe RA, avery low fat, vegan diet for four weeks. Thediet was based around common starches,such as beans, breads, corn, pasta,potatoes, sweet potatoes and rice. To thiswas added fresh or frozen fruits andvegetables. Participants were encouragedto eat as much as they desired. Arheumatologist who was blind to the studymeasured RA symptoms before and afterthe study and the resultswere remarkable.Pain dramatically

reduced, ability tofunction improvedand jointtenderness and

swelling significantly decreased. Theseverity of morning stiffness improved – infact the only element not to improve wasthe duration of morning stiffness.Vegan diets work because they reduce

the gut’s exposure to foods that may causepermeability – pass through it. They arehigh in antioxidants, such as betacarotene, which sits in the lining of cellswaiting to knock out damaging freeradicals. Their avoidance of red meateliminates agents that can causeinflammation. It is important, however,that the vegan diet is low in overall fat butcontains fats high in essential fatty acids,such as borage oil, evening primrose oiland flaxseed oil as these vigorously fightinflammation.Dietary surveys of arthritis patients

reveal that the foods most commonlybelieved to worsen the condition are dairyproducts, corn, red and white meats, fish,wheat, eggs, citrus fruits, potatoes,tomatoes, coffee, nuts and bananas.Once the offending food is eliminated

completely, improvement usually followswithin a few weeks. Dairy foods are one ofthe principal offenders and the problemis the dairy protein rather than the fat so,skimmed products are as much ahindrance as whole milk.Diet is, of course, not the only factor to

cause rheumatoid arthritis and exacerbateit, nor is a vegan diet the only way toreduce or eliminate the agony spawned bythis disease. But research demonstratestime and time again that a low-fat, vegandiet is a powerful and positive, drug-freeand cheap way of limiting the dreadfuldamage of this disease.

Harley McIntosh…looking for veggie respect

This firecracker student from Manchester has been hitting theheadlines with her campaign for better school meals. She has publicallynamed and shamed her school for providing below standard foodchoices for vegetarian students – and embarked on a quest to put itright! She shares her experiences with Viva!life.“I hated eating at school – not because I don't like eating, trust me, I

love it – but because I knew the choice was so poor and the only thing Icould rely on was chips.“On a recent school trip to Utah we were taken to a steakhouse which

served only meat, even though I was not the only vegetarian and we hadall taken the time to indicate beforehand that we were vegetarians. Wewere told by teachers that the group could not cater to the minority.That night we had nothing to eat after a six hour day of skiing. “During a different trip to London, I was given tuna sandwiches as the

vegetarian option. When I politely explained that I am a vegetarian and donot eat fish, I was told that there was nothing the school could do aboutit, to scrape the tuna off and eat the bread! Which, of course, I did not do. “Similarly, in Food Tech lessons, vegetarians were not catered for.

Many times I was forced to write essays while the rest of the class madea meat-based recipe as the school did not offer a meat-free alternative.”However, Harley remains positive about being veggie:“I felt motivated to share my experiences to let other young veggies

know that things do get easier. I have become more inclined to complainand stand up for what I believe in. Anytime you feel awkward orpressurised for not wanting to eat meat, remember that you are makinga difference in the world by leading a cruelty-free lifestyle, helpingconserve water and living a much greener, environmentally-friendly life.Despite all the setbacks, I remain a proud vegetarian, and you

Ruby Sephton (pictured) reached out to us to share herhorror about the production of foie gras. She says:“I, like other people of my age, knew nothing about

foie gras production or even what it was. My Mumsupports the idea that all animals should be treatedwith respect. When she explained what happened onthese farms, I was ashamed that humans can treatanimals in this vile way.”The issue is personal for Ruby, as she has four

ducks of her own.“One of my ducks is very tame and cuddly, as you can

see from the picture. As a male duck he is very big andhe would have been chosen for foie gras. He would havebeen shut in a tiny cage with no escape or access to hispond, in which he spends much of his time, and forcefed until his liver became swollen and diseased. “When I see pictures of ducks kept like that I’m

changing day by day but for once, sectionsof the media appear to share our outrageand are responding to information suppliedto them. The Guardian and the Observerhammered away at the subject over threedays (October 13-15) and tore away whatlittle remains of the Government’s fig leafto reveal sterility – of science and intellect.In a letter, Britain's top animal disease

scientists call the cull "mindless," accuseministers of not telling the truth, say thateven the Government’s own chief scientistrefuses to back it and demand that it beabandoned immediately. They say: "This

Even

Cameron’s claim that killingthem is good for badgers asit saves them from disease isroundly dismissed. Only 14per cent of badgers inprevious culls had TB and

just one in a hundred had severesymptoms. No wonder trust in politiciansis at an all-time low.There was blanket coverage of the

story by West Country media with onearticle predominating. The author’sobjectivity left a little to be desired,describing the cull decision as“scientifically and legally validated.”

Tuned inJustin Kerswell did a brilliant interview with Matthew Wright (Channel 4 TV)about badgers as well as a live 10-minute interview with BBC Radio WestMidlands about World Vegetarian Day. Tony Wardle talked to Vetsonline aboutour goat exposé. He also did a phone interview with Yorkshire Post for ourcondemnation of live lobsters being sold on Leeds’ market. Leeds Radiofollowed up with a pre-recorded interview on the same subject. Tony also dida long interview with community radio Brighton Live on vegan health.

OlympicstupidityThe games were wonderful but when details of theopening ceremony were announced, we objected to theuse of live sheep as unnecessarily stressful under such acrescendo of noise and activity. The Daily Star, Metrosnationwide, Manchester Evening News, agricultural press,Totnes News, Daily Mail, the Guardian, Irish WorldNewspapers and dozens of online news sources acrossthe world, ran the story, including in Canada and Australia– and almost blanket coverage of the whole of India andthe US. In the event, the sheep made a fleetingappearance at the very start of the pageant – if you blinkedyou would have missed them – and we believe our promptaction saved these animals from unnecessary suffering.Apart from that – a brilliant, highly-political ceremony.

Nanny StateOur exposé of goat factory farming was covered by theDaily Mail and at great length by the Mail online. It setalarm bells ringing throughout the industry and otherswho took up the story still referred to our ‘alleged’claims of abuse even though the farm in questionadmitted we had them bang to rights. The ramificationsof this undercover campaign are still reverberating andwe await the outcome (see page 13).

Our handsome pair of Highland steers, Hamishand Dougal, have unwittingly become mediastars. Coverage of our rescue was publicisedright across the West Country in a range ofDevon, Cornish and Somerset papers as well asonline press.

Cadbury’s calves returnOur shocking exposé last year of how little, male bull calves are shot at aday or two old had brilliant coverage in the Daily Mail and Mail onlinesome months ago. We filmed on several farms that supply Cadbury andthe pictures of a little calf being shot caused this huge US multinational(Kraft) considerable discomfort.Just when they thought the storm had passed, the Daily Express

returned to it, highlighting that all the dead calves from this farm went tothe Beaufort hunt as dog food – a hunt patronised by almost the entireroyal family.This obviously put the Daily Mail’s nose out of joint and so they

returned again to the story and gave it splash coverage. It is hard enoughto get any coverage in the national press but to get a second bite at thecherry with two big splash articles ensures we continue to win heartsand minds for the sake of animals.It never ceases to amaze me

how big organisations will sayanything to avoid the public’swrath – in this instance, thatthe shot calf had a poorly leg.It failed to explain why it wasable to walk 70 yards to itsexecution point without somuch as a limp.

Media moos

Victory in our long-fought battle against the use ofkangaroo leather by sports shoe manufacturerswas covered by the Daily Mail and at great lengthin the Mail online. Adidas is the last of the bigboys to use this cruelly-obtained product but as aresult of our campaign has slashed itsconsumption by 98 per cent. The kangaroo killers’body – the KIAA – claimed that Adidasunderpinned the whole industry and whilst, in thepast, it has heaped vitriol (and lies) on Viva!, onthis occasion it was remarkably silent.

experiment involving hundreds of millionsof people and all because a powerful MNCwas believed and the old ‘cautionaryprinciple,’ that you have to provesomething is safe before it is introduced,was jettisoned.Researchers are seriously scared that

this genetically engineered bacterium,which causes insects to swell and burst,might turn your digestive system into a kindof living pesticide factory, manufacturingBt-toxin on a continual basis.As for its original purpose – to kill

insects that attack corn – it has failedthere also and rather than diminishing,they’re prospering, just as on other Btcrops. And as for Monsanto’s Roundup

Ready GM crops, supposedly designed toreduce pesticide use, they’re alsobeginning to fail. According to WashingtonState University, pesticide use in the UShas increased by 239 million kilogramsbecause of GMOs. In fact, these wonderplants appear to have an effective life ofabout seven years before they fail andsome more extreme bit of engineering hasto take place…. I know an old lady whoswallowed a fly…!Of course that’s over there, not here (if

you ignore imports). Well, you will bepleased to know that the European ChiefScientific adviser, Anne Glover (onceScotland’s chief scientific officer) has

spoken: “I would be confident in sayingthat there is no more risk in eating GMOfood than eating conventionally farmedfood.” And her answer to the hugedemands being made on land? “We haveto intensify food production!” You can hearMonsanto et al’s cheers rebounding fromthe rafters. I have scrabbled to find someone who

isn’t myopic or self-interested and whocan look objectively at how land needs tobe used. I discovered new research fromthe University of Exeter. In essence it saysthat if today’s meat-eating habits continue,the predicted rise in global populationscould spell ecological disaster. It’s a start!
