Optimal lighting range
• Avoid backlit subjects. For the best picture, shoot with the light source behind you. When the background is brighter than thesubject, the subject often becomes too dark.If you have to record with this lighting, use theGamma Brightness Compensation or correctthe exposure level to improve the picture (seepages 34 and 50).
Light from behind Backlighting
• Before zooming, think about how to bestframe the shot. Frequent zooming producesunattractive pictures. It also increases thebattery power consumption.
• When image shakes are noticeable duringzoomed-in telephoto shooting, use a tripod, use the DIS function (see page 30), or pushthe Power Zoom control to the W side to zoomout.
• Horizontal panning (lateral movement) andtilting (vertical movement) should be doneslowly to emphasize the wide expanse of ascene or the height of a building, and tomake scenes easy to watch during playback.
• Use a wide-angle setting for fast-movingsubjects.
Note:• It may take longer to focus when zooming and
panning are used frequently.
Tips on Good Lighting
In most outdoor, daytime scenes, naturallighting is adequate for home videos. Indoors, however, artificial lighting is usually required.Video lights with halogen lamps provide themost natural artificial light over a long operatinglife.

Dew Formation• What is “dew formation”?
When cold water is poured into a glass, dewdrops form on the glass. This clinging ofwater drops is called dew formation.
• When dew forms in your VIEWCAM.Dew will gradually form on the head drum ofyour VIEWCAM and make the video tape stickto the head. This causes damage both to thehead and the tape. When dew formationoccurs, recording and playback may notfunction properly.Dew is likely to form in the following circum-stances:• When moving the VIEWCAM from a cold
place to a warm place.• When placing the VIEWCAM in a cold room
which is then heated rapidly.• When moving the VIEWCAM outdoors from
an air conditioned room.• When placing the
VIEWCAM in the directpath of air blowing froman air conditioner.
• When placing theVIEWCAM in a humidroom.
• How to prevent trouble due to dewformation. When using the VIEWCAM in a place wheredew formation is likely to occur, allow theVIEWCAM and the video tape to acclimate tothe surroundings for about one hour. For example, when bringing the VIEWCAMindoors after skiing, place it in a plastic bag.
Q Be sure to tightly seal the plastic bagcontaining the VIEWCAM.
W Remove the bag when the air temperatureinside it reaches the temperature of theroom.
• “Dew” warning featureIf dew forms, the word “DEW” flashes on theLCD monitor, and the power will automaticallyturn off in approximately 10 seconds.
Q If “DEW” flashes on the LCD monitor, remove the cassette, leave the cassettecompartment open, and wait for a few hoursto allow the VIEWCAM to acclimate to thesurrounding temperature.
W To use the VIEWCAM again, turn on thepower after waiting for a few hours. Be surethat “DEW” has disappeared from themonitor.
E Do not insert a cassette while “DEW” isflashing; this may result in damage to thetape.
R Since dew forms gradually, it may take 10 to15 minutes before the dew warning featureengages.
Dirty Video HeadsUsing the VIEWCAM when the video tape isdirty may cause the heads to clog, producingnoise on the recorded image or preventing theimage from being recorded at all.
If the video heads become clogged, theindicator appears on the screen. Contact the
nearest SHARP service center or your dealerfor further advice.
Note:• Video head cleaning can be done by using a
commercially-available cleaning tape. However, excessive use of the cleaning tape may alsocause damage to the video heads. Please readthe instructions accompanying the cleaning tapecarefully, before using it.

Replacing the Fluorescent LampThis VIEWCAM uses a fluorescent lamp tobacklight the LCD monitor. If the monitorbecomes dark or difficult to view, thefluorescent lamp may need to be replaced.Contact the nearest SHARP service center oryour dealer for further advice.
Extending battery pack life• It is recommended that you use the battery
pack until its charge is fully drained and theVIEWCAM is inoperable before rechargingthe pack.
• Recharge the battery pack right beforerecording. A battery pack stored for anextended time will naturally wear down, resulting in decreased recording time.
• Do not try to recharge a fully charged batterypack before it has been discharged, as thiswill cause deterioration of the battery’scapacity.
• Store the battery pack in a dry, cool place.
Battery pack lifeThe battery pack has a limited service life. Ifthe period of use becomes noticeablyshorter with a normal charge, the batterypack is at the end of its service life. Replaceit with a new battery pack.
How to use the battery pack cover• When storing a fully charged battery pack,
put the cover on it so that the “CHARGE”mark printed on the label is seen through thewindow, as shown.
• When storing a battery pack that is not fullycharged, put the cover upside down so thatonly the battery pack casing is seen throughthe window.
Caution:• For safety reasons, put the cover on the
battery pack when it is not being used. If themetal parts of the battery pack come incontact with other metal items, there is adanger that a short circuit may occur.
Battery power is consumed even when theVIEWCAM’s power is turned off. If you are notgoing to use your VIEWCAM immediately, remove the battery pack (see page 7).
Temperature during charging• The Ni-MH (nickel-metal hydride) type BT-H22
and BT-H32 battery packs can be charged ata temperature of 15°C to 30°C (59°F to 86°F).
Battery PackBattery pack consumption• Recording with many starts and stops,
frequent zooming, and recording in lowtemperatures will shorten actual recordingtimes. Accordingly, be sure to turn off thepower when not recording. Use of an auxiliarybattery pack is recommended to preventundesirable interruptions in your recording.
• Do not use an insufficiently charged or weakbattery pack. Use of such battery packs maycause the power to automatically stop duringVIEWCAM operation to protect both thebattery pack and the unit.
Note:• This VIEWCAM uses a Ni-MH (nickel-metal
hydride) type battery pack. Use only theSHARP BT-H22 or BT-H32 battery packs. They are designed specifically for use withthis VIEWCAM.
