This roadway began as a trail made by buffalo, was used by George Washington while surveying land and later to defend western Virginia during the French and Indian War, became an important commercial link, and was used by Confederate Colonel John Singleton Mosby to carry out his raids against Federal forces. With the arrival of the automobile, Route 50 was paved, and stretches from the Atlantic Ocean in Maryland, to California on the Pacific Coast. A driving tour brochure of this road is available at the Visitors Center in Leesburg.
John s. Mosby highway, route 50
Loudoun County protects its unique historic assets through the designation of local historic districts. There are six Historic and Cultural Conservation Districts in the county: Aldie, Bluemont, Goose Creek, Oatlands, Taylorstown, and Waterford. The county has also designated one Historic Roadways District, the Beaverdam Historic Roadways District, which comprises a network of 32 rural roads located in the southwest corner of the county generally bounded by Snickersville Turnpike (Route 734) to the north and John Mosby Highway (Route 50) to the south. The towns of Leesburg, Middleburg, and Purcellville also have historic districts which are under the jurisdiction of their respective towns. All of these districts, with the exception of Beaverdam, are listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
Also on the National Register of Historic Places are the historic districts of the towns of Round Hill and Hillsboro, and the village of Unison, as well as Vestal’s Gap Road and the Lanesville Historic District within Claude Moore Park in Sterling.
The Village of Waterford and the surrounding rural area is also a National Historic Landmark, the highest honorary designation bestowed by the U.S. Department of the Interior. The National Historic Landmark boundary is larger than the county-administered district, which is limited to the central village area.

The Mosby Heritage Area is named for Confederate Colonel John Singleton Mosby, “The Gray Ghost,” who led his Rangers in legendary raids against
Union forces during the Civil War. The five-county heritage area includes Loudoun and it retains much of the scenic and historic landscape and landmarks of its past. Self-guided driving tour brochures and audio tour CDs and tapes are available at the Visitors Center in Leesburg.
