Virginia’s rich wine history dates back more than four centuries; it was in 1984 when Loudoun welcomed its first winery – Willowcroft Farm Vineyards. Lew Parker planted the first grapes for Willowcroft in 1981 on the

slopes of his farm that, in the 1800s, were successfully planted with

orchards. Loudoun’s fertile soil and temperate climate proved fruitful

and soon after, other winemakers followed in his footsteps.

DC’s Wine CountryToday, Loudoun is home to more

than 40 wineries and is one of the

premier wine regions along the

East Coast. Known as DC’s Wine

Country® due to its proximity to

the nation’s capital, Loudoun’s

wineries are nestled on the rolling

countryside, along winding roads

and between horse farms and

historic estates.

and our winemakers believe wine tasting is as personal as winemaking. Many wineries also host special events year-round that range from live music and educational seminars to hands-on activities where visitors can pick grapes or even try their hand at winemaking.

StayWhile in Loudoun, visit a winery or two in one of the regions outlined in this guide or hop in the car and take off on one of Loudoun’s scenic country roads to experience wines from various regions and terrain. Visitors can also explore wine country by

joining one of the guided tours by bike, limousine, bus or sedan charter. With so many wineries to explore, we suggest staying overnight in one of Loudoun’s hotels, resorts or Bed & Breakfasts in order to split winery visits over two or more days.

Additional InformationFor current hours and directions, please contact the wineries directly. Wineries can also provide additional information on pet policies, picnics and group events. If you plan to visit with a group of six or more, please call the winery to confirm it’s policy and make a reservation.

For more information on accommodations, wineries and events, visit VisitLoudoun.org. Turn to page 69-70 for winery listings, or reference

Loudoun gets a lot of attention for its wine culture, but the players from the other side of the beverage aisle are starting to make some noise of their own. The craft beer scene is exploding in Loudoun, with a handful of breweries offering

intimate experiences with the brewers who produce small batch, hand-crafted beers. Helping with the growth of the industry will be the completion of the mid-Atlantic’s first commercial-scale hops processing facility in Lucketts. The facility greatly increases the capability of Loudoun brewers to sustain growth and access Virginia hops locally.

Farm BreweriesThe rise of Loudoun breweries in many ways mirrors that of the wineries. The most notable trend in Loudoun brewing is the growth of farm breweries. These establishments that harness their own crops for beer production truly revolutionize the farm to growler concept. New county regulations opened up the industry, and the expansion shows no signs of slowing down.

Strong RootsOld Dominion Brewing Company began the craft brew scene in Loudoun in 1989. The

company gave its start to many of the local brewers who are producing quality beers today. Now, one of Loudoun’s longest running breweries, Lost Rhino Brewing Company in Ashburn, is set to expand with Lost Rhino Retreat, a new brewery and restaurant located in Brambleton.

NewcomersNorthern Virginia is where Southern hospitality begins, and the beer industry is leading the way by welcoming new comers to the scene. The recent beer boom has been noticed by a few of Loudoun’s neighbors to the

On Top of Our GrainBeer and wine isn’t for everyone, but luckily Loudoun has more to offer than that. Catoctin Creek Distillery produces award-

winning spirits from the town of Purcellville at the first distillery in the county since prohibition. Celebrated owners Scott and Becky Harris are happy to pour a flight featuring their popular Roundstone Rye.

To explore Northern Loudoun, take historic Route 15 north from the county seat of Leesburg. This road is a scenic two-lane highway, lined with farms and houses, rolling fields and mountain views. It was once a Native American trail, known as the Great Warrior’s Path, and was favored by Algonquin and Iroquois for its springs and milder weather east of the mountains. Today it is named the James Monroe Highway, after the nation’s fifth president, who lived on Route 15 just south of Leesburg.

A highlight of the region is the historic village of Waterford, founded by Quakers in 1733. The entire village is a National Historic

Landmark, the highest honorary designation bestowed by the US Department of the Interior. It is a testament to the residents who have diligently preserved not only the settlement’s historic structures, but the surrounding land as well.

The two other towns in Northern Loudoun, Lovettsville and Lucketts, offer a wealth of antique stores and unique gift shops that can fill an entire afternoon of exploring and browsing. Be sure to save time for The Old Lucketts Store, a restored general store turned antique treasure-trove that dates back to 1879. Lovettsville is

known as the German Settlement

and is Loudoun’s northernmost

town. Lucketts is a must see,

particularly if you are in search for

vintage styles and antiques. The

fairs and antique markets bring

out the best vendors from the

region and are often packed with

visitors, so be sure to arrive early

to secure the day’s best steals.

Wine on the RiverThe northern region has the

highest density of wineries in

Loudoun, making it a great

destination for a multi-stop tour. Fabbioli Cellars, Winery 32,

Tarara Winery, Lost Creek Winery and Hidden Brook Winery are all situated on the Potomac River as it flows south

past the county. A great way to

access these wineries from the north is by way of White’s Ferry, which remains the most unique

entrance into Loudoun County.

Historic Tasting RoomsThere is no shortage of historical buildings in Loudoun, and

Northern Loudoun offers you the

opportunity to enjoy wine in two

of them. At Corcoran Vineyards

& Cider you will find yourself in a

1750’s restored log cabin where

you’ll often see owner/winemaker

Lori Corcoran engaging and

educating visitors from behind

the bar. At Sunset Hills

Vineyard’s tasting room, you’ll

sip wine in an 8,000-square-foot

Amish-restored barn featuring

a stunning 35’ beamed ceiling.

Sunset Hills “uses Virginia

sunshine to make Virginia wine”-

an ode to the 154 solar panels

that make the 140-year -old farm

come to life in.

Edge of the CountyHeading further north on

Route 15 towards the Maryland

border you will find the region’s

newest winery, Creek’s Edge.

The winery is recognized by its

distinctive silo, with an interior

that mimics an oak wine barrel,

complete with metal straps.

8 Chains North is a boutique winery showcasing handcrafted

wines made from Loudoun County-grown grapes. Owner/

winegrower Ben Renshaw’s core focus is in the vineyard, and

he follows an Old World style of winemaking. The family- and

dog-friendly property features an inviting tasting room, local art, knowledgeable staff, covered

patio overlooking the vineyard, and private event space. 8 Chains North embodies the true spirit of a Virginia farm winery and extends

that experience to its guests.

Sterling was the first major

planned community in Loudoun,

spurned by the completion of

Dulles International Airport

in the 1960’s. Along with the

major residential development

that has defined the area also

came the construction of many

national hotel chains. The hotels

offer a great launching point for

attractions not only in Loudoun,

but also for day trips into nearby

Washington DC.

In Sterling you’ll find Dulles

Town Center where there is not

only great shopping, but also

frequent special events. The

shopping center features a brand

new Regal Cinemas with king-

size recliner chairs to enhance

your movie going experience.

Winding through Ashburn and

Sterling is the Washington & Old

Dominion Railroad Regional

Park, which replaced the railroad

tracks that once connected the

area to the nation’s capital. The

W&OD allows you to explore

Loudoun in a way that you would

never see while sitting in a car.

If you are along the trail, a great

spot for rest and a bite to eat is

Carolina Brothers Pit Barbeque.

While the other regions in

Loudoun may be dominated by

wine, brewing reigns supreme

in the east. Lost Rhino Brewing

Company, Old Ox Brewery and

Beltway Brewing Company

all feature tasting rooms so you

can test the beers on site before

deciding which one to fill your

growler with. The breweries will

often have live music and special

events on the weekends, so be

sure to call or check their websites

before planning your trip.

While much of eastern Loudoun

features newer developments,

the area is not without its history.

The Loudoun Heritage Farm Museum documents 300 years of Loudoun’s rural heritage. The museum includes many interactive exhibits including the Waxpool General Store; originally built in 1890, which has been completely reconstructed inside the museum.

If you are coming to Loudoun with the entire family, a stop in the eastern side of the county is a must. There are multiple indoor recreational activities to choose from but great places to start are Rebounderz and

Sudden Combat, both in Sterling. Rebounderz is an indoor trampoline arena featuring a 24,000-square-foot open area as well as opportunities to play “In the Air Dodgeball” and “Basketball Slam”. Sudden Combat offers not only extreme laser tag, but also indoor paintball.

New to Loudoun in 2015 will be the Topgolf, located in Ashburn across from One Loudoun. The facility is billed as “Topgolf 7.0”, and utilizes microchips in the golf balls to track the distance and accuracy of shots, allowing for a

variety of game play options. The 65,000 square foot entertainment facility will feature a three level driving range, housing 102 bays, as well as three bars, shuffleboard, cornhole, and private event space.

Algonkian Regional Park lies in the northeast corner of the county along the Potomac River. The park is perfect for a summer afternoon with the family. The park includes Volcano Island (a large waterpark complex), a par-72 golf course, miniature golf, trails, a boat launch, picnic shelters and vacation cottages.

Farm WineriesThe wine industry has grown

from six wineries in 1999 to more

than 40 by 2015. Much of this

is due to farms diversifying to

growing grapes and establishing

tasting rooms. Zephaniah Farm

Vineyards is located on a 376-

acre third-generation working

farm. The entire vine to bottle

process is completed on the

farm. Like all of the farm wineries,

the experience at Zephaniah is

intimate, as the tasting room

sits in the winemaker/owner’s

antique-filled 1830s manor house.

Bed & BreakfastsIf you are looking for a quick

escape from busier Leesburg,

head west for Hamilton, VA.

Originally named “Harmony”,

the town was later renamed for

its beloved postmaster. To fully

experience the friendliness of the

town, book a stay at one of its

is a Second Empire brick mansion

dating to the 1880’s that sits on a

quiet acre of trees and gardens.

Arrive early enough for afternoon

tea, and be sure to stay long

enough to enjoy the full southern

breakfast.

Relaxing Retreat Lansdowne Resort & Spa is

one of the premier resorts in

Northern Virginia, and lies just on

Leesburg’s eastern border. Here

you can pamper yourself with a

outhern Loudoun is the heart of horse country, with the town of Middleburg featuring prominently into the landscape. Middleburg

got its name from being midway on the Winchester-to-Alexandria trading route known as Ashby Gap Road, which is now Route 50. Along present day Route 50 you will find rolling hills covered with vineyards and grazing pastures for the many championship horses that share the land with the locals.

The region extends to the west

If there was an official capital

of horse country in America, it

would be Middleburg. This small

town of about 600 residents has

held undisputed claim to this title

since the early 20th century when

wealthy sporting enthusiasts and

their horses and hounds claimed

the town and its lush rolling

countryside as riders have rubbed

Today, downtown Middleburg

Bluemont sits on the western edge of the county. The town was founded in the early 1800s and was originally called Snickersville. On the 4th of July in 1900, railroad service from the Washington and Old Dominion Railroad was extended to the village, which was promoted as a cool mountain retreat to Washingtonians looking to escape the capital’s summer heat. Bluemont still draws crowds

today for its annual Bluemont Fair featuring traditional and country music, skilled artisans, antiques and local artists.

Purcellville is the largest town in Western Loudoun and has a great collection of shops, local restaurants and breweries, as well as performing and visual arts centers. The town may have no landmark more famous than Nichols Hardware. This family store has been operating for over 100 years, still using handwritten receipts like when they opened their doors in December of 1914.

Hillsboro is Loudoun’s smallest town, with its most contemporary structure dating to the late 1800s. Named appropriately for its geography, the wineries around Hillsboro offer some of the best

views in the county. From the terrace outside Hillsborough Vineyards, visitors experience luxuriant gardens and trickling fountains, dramatically framed by the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Two local favorite breweries reside in Western Loudoun –Old 690 Brewing Company and Adroit Theory Brewing Company. Adroit makes esoteric beers with an emphasis on barrel aging. The brewers always have a new concoction waiting for you, making this stop great for every return trip to the county. Old 690 Brewing was one of the first farm breweries to open in the state

Mark and Vicki Fedor’s English Tudor style winery is the only winery in Loudoun that is LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold Certified by the US Green Building Council. North Gate uses its 22 kW photovoltaic solar array to power the building and strives in every aspect to be environmentally friendly. Growing grapes and making wine since 2002, North Gate’s award-winning wines include Petit Verdot, Viognier, Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc, and a Meritage blend.

of Virginia and remains a great venue for live music.

Western Loudoun offers multiple access points to the Appalachian Trail, which makes it ideal for day hikes or as a rest and recovery stop for through hikers. If you continue north along the trail you will come across Harpers Ferry Adventure Center in the far northwest of the county. The outdoor adventure possibilities are endless and there is plenty to fill an entire weekend, but to do this area justice, it is best to make a weekend out of it.

If you plan to overnight in Western Loudoun, selecting from one of its B&Bs is your best option. Silverbrook Farm is a charming country bed and breakfast nestled between the Blue Ridge Mountains and Short Hill Mountain. Fieldstone Farm is a 1770s Quaker built stone manor house on 30 acres that features an outdoor heated swimming pool with spectacular views of the mountains.

Otium Cellars is a boutique German winery located just outside the town of Purcellville. With its roots in old Franconian tradition, Otium produces quality wines from one of the best Western Loudoun County terroirs. Otium is part of Goose Creek Farms & Winery,

a private equestrian facility dedicated to breeding, raising, training and selling world-class Hanoverian horses. They currently produce 8 varieties: Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Blaufränkisch, Malbec, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir and Dornfelder.

Northern Loudoun

Market Table Bistro Appearing to be a neighborhood

restaurant at first glance, Market

Table Bistro raises the bar with

its carefully executed local

cuisine. Situated in the heart of

rural Loudoun, the owners have

developed personal relationships

with local farmers and purveyors

to provide the quality products

that shine in their “keep it simple”

approach to cooking.

The Restaurant at Patowmack Farm Both the Potomac River and

the mountains serve as the

backdrop for this restaurant,

which is located in a glass

conservatory on Patowmack

Farm. Here, the chef transforms

the farm’s foraged organic

foods into gastronomic works

of art that come to life on your

plate. Menus change monthly

and daily adjustments are made

based on what the gardens are

producing.

Eastern Loudoun

Blue Ridge GrillBlue Ridge Grill is perfect for

visitors looking for a casual

dining experience and a place

where locals go. The restaurant

was started in 2002 by two

entrepreneurs who, after working

in restaurants across Northern

Virginia and South America,

wanted to create their own style

of eatery. While there, try the

Leesburger, a local favorite.

Clyde’s Willow Creek FarmThe first decision to be made

at Clyde’s is where to sit. This

sprawling, rustic tavern is

comprised of several antique

barns, homes and stables that

were destined for demolition

until the Clyde’s Restaurant

Group purchased them to

create Clyde’s Willow Creek

Farm. Dining rooms feature

original artwork, historic

artifacts and a collection of

18th century horse-drawn

carriages. True to its name,

Clyde’s is located on a working

farm where its team of chefs

draws inspiration for the classic

tavern menu.

which has two locations in

Loudoun. The restaurant prides

itself on serving the freshest

seafood favorites alongside

classic American fare.

Mokomandy This restaurant features a minimalist, modern dining room, offers a unique mix of Korean and Cajun cuisine. “Modern Korean by Mandy” is the source of the Mokomandy name, honoring the mother of owner Thaddeus Kim. The child of a Cajun mother and a Korean father, Kim’s mother prepared both cuisines for the family.

Fire Works Wood Fired Pizza Fire Works’ 700 degree wood-fired oven delivers chewy, bubbly, crispy crust nirvana. Located in the former train station in downtown Leesburg, historic photos line the walls, offering a

deck outside is lined with flags

from breweries around the world,

indicative of the vast and global

beer list the restaurant offers.

Lightfoot Restaurant Housed in the former turn-of-

Leesburg, Lightfoot’s exterior is

impressive, historic and elegant

while the interior features high

ceilings adorned with original

PalioPalio Ristorante Italiano is a combination of three, premier historic buildings in downtown Leesburg and utilizes a combination of cherry wood, onyx and antique mirrors and chandeliers to create a unique atmosphere for diners. The theme of Palio derives from the ancient horse race -beautiful and bold, risky and exciting, a feast for the eyes as well as the senses. Be sure to try the Risotto Al Vino Rosso, a silky risotto with beef tenderloin cooked in Loudoun red wine and completed with gorgonzola cheese.

the Wine Kitchen Situated in a cozy King Street space in historic downtown Leesburg, the Wine Kitchen features local and seasonal foods along with a rotating menu of more than 30 wines guests can sample with a flight, glass or by the bottle. The dishes are small to medium plates, perfect for exploring the menu and sharing.

Tuscarora Mill RestaurantKnown as “Tuskie’s” to locals,

the restaurant prides itself on

serving fresh, local cuisine.

Owner Kevin Malone has been

a leader in the “buy local”

movement since opening the

restaurant in 1985 and has

continued that practice at his

now four Loudoun restaurants.

Housed in a 19th century grain

mill in historic downtown

Leesburg, even the Tuskie’s

building honors Loudoun’s

agricultural history.

Southern Loudoun

Goodstone Inn & RestaurantNestled on 265 acres of Loudoun’s

countryside, Goodstone is a

destination in itself. The inn sits

on Snake Hill Farm, a Virginia

getaway since the 1930s, and

the intimate dining room is

located in the 1930s-era carriage

house. Goodstone features a

250- label wine list and a menu

that highlights what is raised and

grown right on the farm.

Hunter’s Head TavernLocated in a circa 1750 building,

Hunter’s Head Tavern offers

homegrown, ecofriendly food

in an authentic English pub

atmosphere. The restaurant

is part of Ayrshire Farm in

Market Salamander Described as a “working chef’s market,” Market Salamander offers much more than your typical market. To begin your experience, enter through the double barn doors into the enclosed Café Courtyard, designed to be reminiscent of village markets seen in the Italian Piedmont. In the open kitchen, enticing aromas and glass cases filled with beautifully displayed food are sure to tempt your senses.

The Red Fox Inn & Tavern Originally built in 1728, The Red Fox Inn & Tavern is the oldest continually operated inn in the US and has hosted famous guests like Elizabeth Taylor and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. Today, The Red Fox Inn & Tavern is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and each of its dining rooms has an ambience that exudes history. The culinary team creates a menu that highlights local ingredients using time honored techniques of smoking, braising, and roasting.

Western Loudoun

Grandale Restaurant Look for the rustic hay wagon marking the entrance to Grandale Restaurant, located on a working farm and vineyard-868 Estate Vineyards. Don’t let the unassuming exterior fool you – this is elegant country dining with food as fresh as it gets. Guests are encouraged to walk the farm, and dine at one of the outdoor pergolas or on the 32-seat deck.

Magnolias at the Mill “Maggie’s” as the locals prefer, is housed in a circa 1905 restored mill; the millworks are still visible throughout the restaurant, lending a rustic feel to the otherwise elegant dining rooms. Mingle with the locals and watch the action in the open kitchen from the café area. Magnolias offers an impressive selection of both beer and wine and a menu that’s inspired by the local harvest.

HistoryS

ituated in the heart of the Journey Through Hallowed Ground National Heritage area, Loudoun is home to several historic towns that are centuries old, plantations that have withstood the test of time, Civil War sites and homes of

influential people from America’s past.

Begin your trip through time on

Loudoun’s Civil War trail, a

state-wide system that escorts

visitors through historic roadbeds

that served as battle routes for

armies of both sides during the

Civil War. With its location just 25

miles from the nation’s capital,

Loudoun typified the Civil War

on the border, dividing citizens

and families according to their

loyalties to the North and South.

Some of the Civil War trail stops

include the site of the 1861

Battle of Ball’s Bluff, which

is now home to the nation’s

smallest national cemetery, a

former Confederate encampment

at Morven Park and a Union

cemetery in Leesburg. Another

must-visit stop for Civil War buffs

is Aldie Mill, which was the site

of a March 1863 clash between

Col. John Mosby and Federal

cavalry that became known as

the Aldie Races.

Loudoun’s rich history extends

far beyond the Civil War. While

here, stroll through historic

towns including the Village of Waterford, which is one of the

few National Landmark Villages

in the nation and Leesburg- the

county seat since 1757. While

in Leesburg, explore the circa

1804 Federal-style mansion

and extensive gardens at

Oatlands Plantation or visit the

home of former Virginia Gov.

Westmoreland Davis at

Morven Park.

Leesburg is also the place one

of the most influential men of

the 20th century called home.

George C. Marshall, a five-star

general, Secretary of State and

Secretary of Defense, was the

author of the “Marshall Plan”,

which aimed to revitalize Europe

after World War II. His home,

known as the Marshall House,

is open for public tours. Besides

a winter home in North Carolina,

it was the only home he and his

The National Sporting Library & Museum in Middleburg is a research library and art museum that preserves, celebrates, and shares the art, literature, and culture of horse and field sports. For the horse enthusiasts who

prefer to experience the sensation of riding for themselves, the

Virginia International Polo Club in Upperville offers guests the

opportunity to learn to play polo, while Serene Acres in Bluemont

provides English riding instruction and trail rides.

Tours and shows can be found

throughout the year in the

Middleburg area. The Upperville

Colt & Horse Show, held at the

magnificent Grafton and Salem

Farms is the oldest horse show

in the country, dating to 1853.

Steeped in tradition, it extends a

full seven days, and involves over

two thousand horse and rider

combinations from young children

on ponies to leading Olympic and

World Cup riders and horses. The

Hunt County Stable Tour is held

on Memorial Day weekend when

more than a dozen private horse

estates and equine facilities open

their doors to the public.

Lovers of everything outdoors will harness their adventurous side in Loudoun. No trip here is complete without making sure you take in the scenery of the Blue Ridge Mountains, hike on the Appalachian Trail, zip line through the trees,

golf on a luxury course, meet new animals or play sports when the weather is nice. Spend a weekend on the wild side by yourself or with the family while exploring everything Loudoun has to offer.

Get On Your Feet and MoveWould you rather hike it or bike it? Either way, Loudoun features beautiful trails to experience on your feet or on a seat. For a rigorous hike, try the Appalachian Trail, a 2,174 mile path that passes just west of Loudoun. Take on the trail

for a day, week or weekend and take a rest at Bears Den in Bluemont, which provides a full service hostel for hikers or the Appalachian Outdoor Readiness and Essentials in Purcellville, which has all of your hiking necessities. If you prefer a flat and shorter ride, hop on your bike and onto the 45-mile
