Chris Auville, FACMPEVMGMA President

As you are evaluating your education dollars for 2016, we encourage you to attend

the VMGMA Spring Conference in Richmond. We are again offering a two track series. If you took the Six Sigma White Belt session with Owen Dahl last fall, you may want to con-tinue with attaining your Yellow Belt. This course was very well received and filled up quickly, so don’t put this on the bottom of your “to do” list.

ACMPE: Introduction to Fellowship Papers Jane Parrish, FACMPECarteret Medical GroupPractice AdministratorMorehead City, NC

Jumpstart your paper! During this session, we will review the requirements and process for becoming a Fellow in the ACMPE. We will thoroughly discuss the different types

of papers and what graders will be looking for in an outline and in your

paper. Bring your topic ideas for an open discussion on how to develop the idea into an outline and paper. We will provide you with, and point you to resources to help you achieve Fellowship. Attendees should leave the session with a good topic idea, and be well on their way with a basic outline.

Jane Parrish, FACMPE, is a long-time MGMA Papers Committee member serving as a grader, a team lead and mentor. Jane has 20+ years of practice management experience in academic and private practice settings.

If you’ve ever been guilty of letting the “little things” slide, you may be permitting a less-than-desirable patient experi-ence. Find out what you can do to consistently enhance the patient experience. Service excellence won’t happen by chance; rather, you must purposefully create it by design. This session will feature information and ideas that you can apply immedi-ately to create a culture of greater accountability for the patient experience.

This session will provide you with the knowledge to:

• Define the leader’s role in creating a culture of account-ability;

Understanding & Meshing the Generational GapPatti B. CareyFounder & President Workforce Strategies, LLC Amelia Courthouse, VA

We’ve all heard how each genera-tion of Americans tends to have its own distinct characteristics.

Common wisdom has it that people who came of age during and after the Depression tend to be thrifty, as well as grateful to have a job. They also tend to have strong work ethics and don’t understand workers who don’t share their same work values. Baby Boomers tend to be preoc-cupied with climbing the corporate ladder. They are also good rapport builders at work and deliver extraordinary customer service. Generation X tends to seek balance in their lives. In addition, they want work to be fun and not boring. Entering the workforce now is the “everybody gets a trophy” Millennial Generation who seek money and engaging training programs, and following them is the iGeneration, whose members have never known a world without the Internet. While certainly such broad generalizations don’t apply to every member of a generation, they do have some merit. This session will explore generations in the workplace and how to work more effectively with them. Specifically, it will explore the values, motivational factors, strengths and limitations of each generation as well as strategies to implement for a more collaborative work environ-ment with each.

Track 1: Practice ManagementTrack 2 Program at a Glance

Practicing Via Telemedicine: Risks That May Ensue Karen Mathura, RN, JD, CPHRM, CLCS, Risk Management & Claims Consultant, RCM&D

Lauren Bicknese, CLCS, Risk Management Consultant, RCM&D, Baltimore, MD

With the continuous advancements in technology, the delivery of health infor-mation and healthcare services is rapidly changing. Telehealth practice in the USA is expected to double within the next two

years. The expansion of health care delivery across interna-tional borders via electronic means continues to grow. The increasingly evident use of mobile technology in today’s soci-ety is finding its way into the delivery of healthcare. Statistics show that providers are using mobile devices to collect, read and monitor patient data and studies have shown that consum-ers have high expectations for the delivery and management of their healthcare through mobile technology.

In this session, we will explore and define different varia-tions of telemedicine (i.e., eHealth, telehealth, telemedicine, mHealth) and the associated potential exposures and risks. The regulatory landscape, including the FDA, CMS, HIPAA, state policies and medical board positions, will be analyzed and dis-cussed. Obstacles to practicing via telemedicine and mHealth will be explored, followed by risk management solutions and proactive strategies for incorporating these methods of care delivery into current practice.

Your Declaration of Independence: Creating an Infrastructure For Population HealthStephen L. Cavalieri, MDChief Medical OfficerinHEALTH/MedVirginiaGlen Allen, VA

Gerard P. Filicko, MHA, CMPESr. VP Clinical ServicesinHEALTH/MedVirginiaGlen Allen, VA

Independent physician groups are under in-creasing pressure to participate in account-

able care organizations, value-based care initiatives and other ar-rangements dealing with innovative payment methods. Many are uncertain of the demands required for successful participation, and are anxious about offers coming from well-meaning hospital systems, carriers and other third parties. This session will cover the core concepts of shared governance, data use and reporting across disparate health information technology, administrative integration, physician engagement and coordination of care. It will also highlight a case study of MD Value Care, a multispecial-ty physician organization in Central Virginia composed of more than 400 physicians from 23 independent practices. Attendees will learn to identify administrative and medical demands of population health management, be able to describe strategies for successful participation in physician-led ACOs and review integration pitfalls, pearls and methods of maintaining indepen-dence in the ACO world.

Imagine Your Life If You Fail a HIPAA Audit; Incident Investigation & Breach Reporting Rick Boyles, PresidentComputer Networks Inc.Virginia Beach, VA

This informative session will teach you how to recognize an “incident” and determine if it is a patient data breach that is required to be reported to the Secretary of Health and Human Services. Guidance will be given on investigating incidents and how to report a breach to the government. Also learn how you can lose PHI (Protected Health Information) and NOT have to report it.

Immigration – The Importance Of and How to Conduct an Internal I-9 AuditRonny Smith, Sr. Executive Employment AdvisorMid-State HRLynchburg, VA

With immigration being a hot topic across America, it is more impor-

tant than ever to audit your I-9 documents and employment practices. Fines associated with improper I-9 forms range from $110 to $1100 per form. Payment of these fines are not covered under any insurance policy. In this interactive session, you will learn how to conduct your own internal audit, how to properly address issues, how to calculate the retention period of your I-9’s and more.

Track 2: Lean Management

FLSA – Reviewing Your Employee Classifications and How New Regulations Will Impact Your Practice Ronny Smith, Sr. Executive Employment Advisor, Mid-State HRLynchburg, VA

The DOL is changing the regulations on exempt employees, increasing their base salary amount by more than double. It is imperative that employers review their employees to make sure they are properly classified and to correct any issues they may have. We strongly anticipate an increased proactive ap-proach from the DOL to assure an employer’s compliance in the future. Fines and penalties levied against a practice for im-proper classifications are not covered by any insurance policy. Through case studies, learn how new regulations could impact your practice.
