Dear Supporter,
We knew last Friday was going to be a special day for the National Disability Insurance Scheme, but
nothing could have prepared us for DisabiliTEA 2012. To everyone who attended - THANK YOU!
At least 35,000 people turned out at more than 1,700 events all over Australia. It was our loudest call
yet to our political leaders that we want the NDIS in every city, in every town.
Let's all use this opportunity to talk to everyone we
know about why the NDIS is so important for
Australia. Will you send the email below our signature
to everyone in your email address book and ask them
to support the NDIS?
In Wollongong one of the largest DisabiliTEA events
packed the Port Kembla racecourse, while on the west
coast construction workers at Perth's Fiona Stanley
hospital site took part.
Our Special Olympics team hosted an event at
Sydney's Olympic Park, Melbourne's Federation
Square was teeming and thousands of campaigners
hosted events in parks, schools and lounge rooms all
over Australia.
MPs from all political parties attended events as well. All in all Friday's DisabiliTEA demonstrated
that there is broad support for the NDIS everywhere.
But we want to see more than broad support from our politicians. We want them to bring the NDIS
home.
The most important thing you can do right now to support the NDIS is to sign up your friends, family
members and work colleagues to support the campaign.
In less than one minute you can help lock in the NDIS. Forward the email below the line to everyone
in your address book who hasn't yet joined and ask them to sign up too.
People of Australia's northernmost inhabited
location, Boigu Island, show their support for
the NDIS.

Thank you for your support and hard work,
The Every Australian Counts campaign team

P.S. No matter where you live in Australia, it was hard to miss DisabiliTEA last week - tireless
campaigner Millie Parker shared her story on Channel 10's The Project, the Sunday newspapers
promoted our event, radio interviews ran all day long all over Australia and more than 40 news articles
have so far been spotted in regional and suburban papers.
Hi there,
I'm writing today to ask you to join me in supporting the National Disability Insurance Scheme.
In Australia, disability support is a lottery. People receive different levels of support depending on
how, when and where their disability was acquired.
The NDIS will revolutionise the way people with a disability, their families and carers are supported
in Australia. It will replace all the current state and territory disability systems, because they don’t
work.
Show you support the NDIS by signing up in less than a minute at
http://www.everyaustraliancounts.com.au
Everyone who learns about the NDIS knows it's a good idea, but there is no guaranteed future for the
NDIS.
We need our political leaders to make a long-term commitment to make sure that the NDIS can help
those Australians who need it. We will only bring the NDIS to every city and town in Australia if our
politicians see a groundswell of support from people all over the country.
By joining the campaign, you are helping to make sure that the NDIS is locked in for all Australians,
for good. You'll be helping make Australia a better place.
Sign up today at http://www.everyaustraliancounts.com.au
Thanks
Supporter

17/ HEALTH RESULTS REVEAL LONG WAIT FOR MENTALLY ILL PATIENTS:
HEALTH RESULTS REVEAL LONG WAIT FOR MENTALLY ILL PATIENTS
Recently released Victorian Hospital data reveals that the State’s acute mental health services are
straining under the pressure of savage funding cuts by the Baillieu Government, Shadow
Parliamentary Secretary for Mental Health, Wade Noonan said today.
The Victorian Health Services Performance report details that 748 mentally ill patients waited
longer than eight hours in hospital emergency departments before gaining admission to a bed
during the April to June quarter – up by more than 30% over the same period last year.
Mr Noonan said that the latest results demonstrated that the mental health system was going
backwards under the Baillieu Government.
“These latest results demonstrate that gaining access to a specialist treatment bed is simply getting
harder and harder for Victorians with serious mental illnesses”, Mr Noonan said.
“We know that one in three mentally ill patients are waiting more than eight hours in emergency
departments before being admitted to a bed and the situation is getting worse.
“Leaving mentally ill patients languishing in emergency departments is simply not good enough.
“The decision by the Baillieu Government to rip more than half a billion dollars out of Victoria’s
health system is clearly having a devastating effect on mental health treatment services”, Mr
Noonan said.
The latest Victorian Health Services Performance results failed to declare the number of service
contact hours for consumers of community mental health services, or the post discharge follow-up
rates.
Mr Noonan said it was difficult to measure the performance of Victoria’s mental health services
because the Baillieu Government was failing to disclose critical performance information.
“We don’t know how many patients are being contacted after their stay in hospital to check on
their recovery”, Mr Noonan said.
“Apparently the Baillieu Government’s pledge to be open and accountable doesn’t apply to
certain health data.
“The sequence of poor decisions by the Baillieu Government is starting to have a negative impact
on patients requiring access to mental health services across Victoria.
“Earlier this year the Baillieu Government closed the 24-hour mental health advice line,
disbanded the mental health reform council, reduced the indexation payments to more than 100
community mental health providers across the state, and dropped the previous Labor
Government’s workforce strategy”.
