Introduction

This addendum provides detailed guidance on performing Lab 4, Configuring VMware vCenter Server Appliance of the VMware vSphere 5.5 Install, Configure, Manage course, using a NETLAB+ system. Objective: Configure the vCenter Server Appliance

In this lab, you will be using the vclient machine to complete your objectives. You will be performing the following tasks:

1. Configure the vCenter Server Appliance for first use 2. Configure the vCenter Server Appliance with a web browser 3. Manage vSphere license keys 4. Create a vCenter Server Inventory Data Center object 5. Setup a New User Account on vCenter

1 Configure the vCenter Server Appliance for First Use

In this task, you access your vCenter Server appliance and configure the network settings.

1. Click on the vclient graphic on the topology page. 2. Log into the vclient VM with the username sysadmin and password vmware123. 3. Open the Chrome web browser by clicking on the icon at the left side of the

screen.

4. Click Proceed anyway on the warning page. 5. Type admin in the Username field. 6. Type vmware in the Password field. 7. At the top of the page click the Go Home icon.

8. In the main workspace area click on the Home tab then click on Hosts and Clusters.

9. In the Object Navigator pane, right-click esxi-2.vmeduc.com and select Deploy OVF Template.

10. In the Deploy OVF Template wizard section 1a Select source, click the Local file radio button then click the Browse… button.

11. In the Select file popup window, select the VMware-vCenter-Server-Appliance-x.x.x.x-x.ova in the sysadmin/Downloads directory, then click the Open button.

12. In the Deploy OVF Template wizard section 1a Select source, click the Next button.

13. In the Deploy OVF Template wizard section 1b Review details, click the Next button.

14. In the Deploy OVF Template wizard section 2a Select name and folder, select the Training datacenter then click the Next button.

15. In the Deploy OVF Template wizard section 2b Select storage, select Thin Provision from the Select virtual disk format drop box, select master in the datastore list and then click the Next button.

16. In the Deploy OVF Template wizard section 2c Setup networks, leave the default values then click the Next button.

17. In the Deploy OVF Template wizard section 2d Customize template, enter the corresponding values from the following table in the form. (Note: Click on the triangle next to Networking Properties to expand the settings window.)

18. Click Next. 19. On the Ready to Complete page, review the settings selections and click the

Finish button. 20. Monitor the status of your OVF deployment in the Recent Tasks pane.

21. Once deployed, right-click on the VMware vCenter Server Appliance in the Object Navigator, then select Power On.

22. Right-click on the VMware vCenter Server Appliance in the Object Navigator and then select Open Console.

23. To open the console to the virtual machine you will need to access the new Google Chrome window. Click on the Google Chrome icon in the launcher and select the window with the vCenter server in it. You may need to resize the new window if the default window is too small.

You may have noticed the Google Chrome icon moving in the Ubuntu Launcher bar signaling that there was a new window of Chrome opening. Also, notice that there are two white marks on the left side of the icon identifying that there are two instances of the browser open.

24. In the VMware vCenter Server Appliance window, observe the Quickstart Guide

instructions.

2 Configure the vCenter Server Appliance with a Web browser

In this task, you will use the vclient virtual machine to accept the End User License Agreement and setup the database for the vCenter Server Appliance with a browser.

1. Change focus back to the main Google Chrome window that has the Web Client running and click on the New Tab or depress Ctrl+T keys to create a new tab in the browser.

2. In the address bar, type in the URL https://172.16.1.2:5480 obtained in the previous section and then press Enter.

3. If presented with a warning that the site’s security certificate is not trusted, click the Proceed anyway button and continue.

4. To login to the VMware vCenter Server Appliance type the default credentials, User name root and Password vmware and then click the Login button.

5. The vCenter Server Setup window opens and asks you to accept the EULA.

6. Click the Accept license agreement box at the bottom-left of the screen and click Next.

7. On the Configure Options page, choose the radio button next to Configure with Default Settings and click Next.

8. On the Review Configuration page, click Start. The system will now configure time synchronization, the database, and SSO. This process may take several minutes.

9. When all tasks have completed and the vCenter Server has started, click the Close button.

10. In the upper-right corner, click on Logout user root.

11. In the address bar of your browser, type the following URL https://172.16.1.2:9443 then press the Enter key.

12. You are presented with “The site’s security certificate is not trusted!” warning message, click the Proceed anyway button to continue.

13. You will likely be presented with permission requests for plug-ins to run in the browser. The VMware Remote Console Plug-in and the Vmware Client Support Plug-in will both need you permission to run in the browser. Click on the Always run on this site for both plug-in requests.

14. Enter the following credentials into the VMware vCenter Web Client: User name root and Password vmware.

15. Click the Login button.

3 Manage vSphere License Keys

The vCenter Server is currently running in Evaluation mode. In this task, you will use the vSphere Web Client to log in to the vCenter Server Appliance and add a license key for vCenter Server and ESXi.

1. At the top of the page, click the Go Home icon.

2. In the top level of the Object Navigator, select Administration.

3. Select Licenses and the License Keys tab appears in the main workspace area.

4. Click the Add License Keys button.

5. In the Enter new vSphere license keys one per line field, enter the vCenter Server license key and vSphere license key (See the hot box below). Include the hyphens: XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX. (The dialog box requires a hyphen every five characters.)

Depending upon the deployment of the labs, the license keys can be obtained via your instructor or via an attached ISO to the client machine.

6. If you see a DVD icon in the client launcher bar then you may obtain your

licenses via the attached ISO (DVD) method. Follow the subsequent steps to obtain the license keys from the DVD attached to the client machine; otherwise, ask your instructor for assistance.

a. Click on the DVD icon in the client launcher bar of the Ubuntu client.

b. Double-click the text file to open the file in the gedit editor.

c. Once the file opens, you can copy (CTRL+C) the keys from the editor and paste them (CTRL+V) into the appropriate field when asked for them.

7. In the Enter optional label for new license keys field, type or paste VMware Training Licenses, then click Next.

8. In the License Key pane, verify that your vCenter Server license key appears. 9. Click Finish.

10. Click the vCenter Server Systems tab and click the Assign License Key button.

11. Click the radio button next to vCenter Server 5 Standard, and then click OK. 12. Verify that the license key appears next to the vCenter-1 entry.

4 Create a vCenter Server Inventory Datacenter Object

In this task, you will create the Training datacenter.

1. Click on VMware vSphere Web Client at the top of the browser window and then click the Home tab in the main workspace area.

2. Click on the vCenter icon in the main workspace area.

3. Click on the Datacenters object in the Object Navigator pane under Inventory Lists.

4. Click the Create a new datacenter button.

5. Name the datacenter Training, click on the vcenter-2 object and then click the OK button.

6. The Training datacenter should now appear in the Object Navigator pane.

5 Setup a New User Account on vCenter

In this task, you will create a new user account on the vCenter system.

1. Right-click the VMware vCenter Server Appliance virtual machine in the Object Navigator pane and select Open Console.

2. Press Enter to login. 3. Enter root as the vcenter-1 login and vmware as the password. 4. Type useradd –m vuser to create the vuser account and press Enter. 5. Type passwd vuser to create the vuser password and press Enter. 6. Type vmware123 and press Enter. 7. Ignore the warning, retype the password, and press Enter.

8. When the vuser account is setup, type Exit to logout of the vcenter-1 system. 9. Your mouse is stuck inside of this terminal. In order to release the mouse, press

and hold CTRL and ALT keys and move the mouse outside of the terminal followed by releasing the keys.

10. Close the viewer window for the vcenter-1 system.
