Worksheet 1. Reading: How Children See the Future
Read these actual observations from children in school in New York City. Then
answer the questions.
How Children See the Future Life in New York Cit
1. Sarah age 10: "Yes, I think there will be
discoveries of life on other planets.”
2. Lisa, age 11: “Maybe life on other planets
will be discovered. I would like to travel on a
spaceship to outer space and take my three
cats with me."
3. Ricky, age 9: "I think that if we all ride on bikes, we
can limit all the pollution in the world. And maybe build a
monorail to go around the whole city.”
4. Carlos, age 11: “If New York City keeps going the way it is, things will be
worse. The city will be more crowded, with more traffic, worse air, more
litter, less open and green spaces. We need to take care of the
environment and recycle things so we have less garbage.
5. Sabrina, age 12: “In the year 2020, my city, New York, will be the ideal
living place. People will heat their homes in a different way, not from coal or
oil. They will use large solar panels to collect the sun's rays for their heating
needs. Many people will go to space camps to prepare for space living. In
short, the future will transform the way people live."

A Green City
In Abu Dhabi -- the capital of the United Arab Emirates -- they are building a
new city called Masdar. It is going to be a green city -- friendly to the
environment in every way. It will be “carbon-free” and “waste-free.” There
won’t be any carbon fuels, which pollute the environment, and all the
waste -- the garbage -- will be recycled into electricity.
The Masdar community is going to open in late
2009. The city will cover six square kilometers,
and cars will not be allowed. All the homes,
business, and stores will be very close to public
transportation – a maximum distance of 200
meters from any place to the nearest station. There will be pleasant
walkways -- or paths -- and narrow streets with trees to encourage
walking. The land around the city will contain wind farms to create energy
from wind and solar energy farms to create energy from the sun. There will
be fields to grow food. The city will be entirely self-sustaining.
The Masdar Institute of Science and Technology will conduct cutting-edge
research into new energy technologies. In addition, there will be
international businesses that are going to invest in these new technologies
and develop them. The city will also have housing for employees, a science
museum, and entertainment facilities.
The Chief Executive Officer of Masdar, Sultan Al Jaber, says, “There is
nothing like this in the world. One day all cities will be built like this.”
