PartIPoliciesandProceduresVoiceLessonPolicyStudentsacceptedandenrolledinPerformance(366),BFAMusicalTheatre(303),andMusicEducation(152),BachelorofArts(336)andComposition-PerformanceTrackwillreceiveone-hourlessonsbeginningintheFreshmenyear.VoicemajorsinMusicTherapyandSoundRecordingTechnologyandallothercurriculartrackswillreceivehalf-hourlessons.Attendanceatallscheduledlessonsismandatory; PLEASENOTE:MAKE-UPLESSONSWILLBEGIVENONLYINTHECASEOFCANCELLATIONBYTHEVOICETEACHER.Itisexpectedthatallvoicestudentswillpurchasemusicforuseinweeklylessons-justasyouwouldbeexpectedtopurchasetextbooksforuseinotherclasses.Repeateduseofcopiesishighlydiscouraged. REQUIREDVOICEAREAEVENTSStudentsmustparticipateandenrollinMUS120eachsemestertheyareregisteredinstudiolessons,(seeConcertAttendancepage3)wherethestudentisrequiredtoattendaminimumofeightapprovedconcerts(includingfacultysoloandensemblerecitals,WesternNewYorkChamberOrchestra,visitingartists,andmajorstudentensembles)eachsemester.Additionally,voicestudentsarerequiredtoattendSOTAVocalWeekeventsandtheHillmanOpera.BFAMTStudentsshouldconsultwiththeirindividualvoiceteachers.Requiredeventswillbemonitoredthroughyourindividualstudio.Barriers/AuditionsBarrierExaminationsThejuryexaminationattheconclusionofthefourthsemesterofstudyforallappliedvoicemajorsisconsideredaBARRIERexamination.(SeeJuryRequirements,Page5)Thisjurywillserveasanauditionforcontinuationintheprogrambeyondthesecondyear.Also,attheconclusionofthesecondsemesterofstudy,freshmenmajoringinPerformance(366)mustauditionforcontinuationintheprogrambeyondthefirstyear.(SeeJuryRequirements,Page5).SoundRecordingmajorsarethesoleexception,astheyenrollinonlytwosemestersofstudiolessons. AuditionsAllstudents(incomingfreshmen,transferstudentsandstudentscurrentlyenrolledatFredonia)wishingtoauditionforacurricularprogramwithanappliedvoicemajorinvoicemustdosoonascheduledSchoolofMusicauditiondayorduringVoiceJuriesatsemester’send.ThisincludescurrentvoicemajorswishingtochangecurriculawithintheSchoolofMusic.Studentsplanningtochangemajorswithinthevoiceareashouldunderstandthatdoingsomayrequireadditionalsemestersofstudyandthereforewillprolongthestudent’sresidencyatFredonia.SpecialNote:AuditionsfortheBFAinMusicalTheatredegreeprogrammustbeadjudicatedbyrepresentativefacultyfromthedisciplinesofMusic,Theatre,andDance.Studentswho,uponcompletingasuccessfulaudition,areadmittedtotheBFAMusicalTheatredegreeprogramwill,becauseofthecomplexityofthecourseofferingsinthedegreeprogram,berequiredtocompletetwofullyearsofstudyinallthreeareas(Music,Theatre,andDance)beforeundertakingtheSophomoreBarrier.ThisincludesallinternalorexternaltransfersintotheBFAprogram.Currentauditioninformationincludingdatescanbefoundontheschoolofmusicwebsite.

DoubleMajorsStudentswhochoosetopursueadoublemajormustplantocompletethefullrequirementsforbothprograms.Forexample,astudentearningbothMusicEducationandPerformancemajorswillneedtoplanonnine(9)semestersofcollegeworktoensuresufficienttimetocompleteeight(8)semestersofstudiovoicelessonsaswellasasemesterforpracticeteaching.Ifthebaccalaureaterecitalisnotperformedduringtheeight(8)semesters,thestudentmustmakeprivatefinancialarrangementswiththestudioteacherforlessons.

EnsembleRequirementsAllundergraduatevoicestudents,withtheexceptionofBFAMusicalTheatre(303),arerequiredtoparticipateinamajorchoralensemble(UniversityChorus,CollegeChoir,ChamberSingersorFredoniaCamerata)duringeachsemesterinwhichtheyreceiveprivatevoiceinstruction.Inotherwords,ensembleparticipationmustoccurconcurrentlywithvoicestudyregardlessofdegreeprogramrequirements.Inadditiontothemajorchoralensembles,astudentmayreceiveensemblecreditforparticipationinOperaProductionPracticumand/orOperaSeminar.Performance(366)majorsmust

Mus033OperaProductionPracticum*AllfreshmenenrolledinstudiovoicelessonsareREQUIREDtoenrollinone(1)semesterofOperaProductionPracticumduringthefreshmanyear.Allvoiceperformancemajors(366)arerequiredtohaveearnedaminimumoffour(4)semestersofOperaProductionPracticumcreditsbeforethecompletionofthedegreeprogram.(Thefreshmanrequirementnotedabovemaycountasoneofthefourrequiredsemesters.)OperaProductionPracticumcreditmaybeearnedinoneoffourways:1.Workingonaset,costume,lighting,orproductioncrewforoneUniversitystageproductionduringthesemesterofenrollment;atypicalcrewassignmentincludesworkingtwotothreeeveningseachweekforaperiodofapproximatelyfiveweeks.2.Workingonaset,costume,lighting,orproductioncrewforalluniversitystageproductionsduringthesemesterofenrollment;attendanceinthisinstanceisreducedtooneeveningperweekfortheentiresemester.3.WorkingontherunningcrewfortheHillmanOperaintheFallSemesterorOperaScenesintheSpringSemester;Inadditiontoworkingallperformancedates,involvementincludesloading-inandstrikingoftheset,eveninghours(usuallyafter6:00pm)anddaytimehours(takingintoaccountindividualclassschedules)fornomorethantwo(2)weekspriortoopeningnight.ThescheduleisdeterminedbytheTheatreArtsfacultyfortheHillmanOperaandbytheOperaTheatreAdvisors/TechnicalStafffortheOperaScenes.Oftenstudentsarenotrequiredforalloftheabove,butshouldplanonthemaximumtimecommitmentwhenconsideringschedulingoptions.4.PerformingaleadingorsecondaryroleorsinginginthechorusofaUniversityOperaorMainStageMusicalproductionduringthesemesterofenrollment;approvalofsuchrolecreditisgivenbytheVoiceFaculty.*NOTE:ThemaximumnumberofcrewparticipationsforwhichanystudentmayreceiveOperaProductionPracticumcreditisThree(3).AstudentmayreceiveanynumberofOperaProductionPracticumcreditsforapprovedperformances(leading,secondary,andchorusroles). MUS120ConcertAttendanceStudentsmustparticipateandenrollinMUS120eachsemestertheyareregisteredinstudiolessons,attendingeight(8)concertseachsemesterofenrollmentfromagivenlist.Thevoiceareasuggeststhatatleastthreeoftheseconcertsbeoutsidethevoicearea.Itissuggestedthattheremainingfivebefromthe"VoiceareaRecommended"list(VAR).Theseeventsinclude,butarenotlimitedtoallperformancesbymembersoftheVoiceFaculty,majorchoralensembles,guestartists,SOTA(StudentOperaTheatreAssociation)sponsoredevents,andmainstageoperaandmusicaltheatreproductions.AtthebeginningofeachsemestertheVARlistwillbedistributedbytheVoiceFaculty.Upondistribution,theresponsibilityforcompliancewiththeabovepolicyrestssolelywiththeindividualstudent.(Outsideconcertattendancewillbegivencreditatthediscretionofthestudioteacheruponpresentationofproofofattendance;outsideeventsmustbeatorabovethelevelofperformancesfromtheprescribedlist.)Failuretocompletetheabovewillresultinthewithholdingofastudent’sdiploma.

Itisthestudent’sresponsibilitytofindanaccompanistwhocanbeavailableforlessons,recitalseminar,juries,andperformances.Accompanistswilltypicallybeneededforthesecondhalf-houroflessonseachweek,beginningafterthefirstfewweeksofinitialstudy.Youraccompanistshouldalsobepreparedtorehearsewithyoueachweek.(Singersmustrememberthataccompanistsareequalpartnersinmusicmaking.Ensemblepreparationisnottobeneglected;thisincludesbeingprompttorehearsalsandlessons,andprovidingmusictoaccompanistsinatimelymanner.) Themajorityofvoicemajorswillsecureapianistthroughpayingaprivatefee.Studentsatadvancedlevelsofstudymayrequest,throughtheVoiceAreaHead,astaffaccompanistwhenpossible,andmustmakethisrequestinthesemesterprecedingtheirneed.Somestudentswillbeabletosecureapeer,studentaccompanistforsomeoralloftheiryearsofvocalstudy.

AccompanimentOptionforPerformanceMajorsVoicePerformance(366)majorswillbegiventheoptionoffulfillingtheirMUS418pianorequirementsbyservingasanaccompanistforonevoicestudent,underthesupervisionofbothastudioteacherandtheMUS418classpianoteacher.Requirementswouldincluderegularattendancetoaccompanythevoicestudent’slessons,rehearsingonehourperweekwiththestudent,andpracticingtherepertoirealonetoinsurecompetencyonthepianopart(s).Accompanyingthevoicestudent’sjurywouldserveasthefinalexaminationfortheaccompanist’sMUS418requirements,inadditiontoanydemonstrationthattheMUS418teacherwouldrequest.Iftheperformancemajordoesnotelectthisoption,MUS418mustbecompletedaccordingtothestandardcourserequirements.

ForeignLanguageRequirementforPerformanceMajorsInadditiontothedictioncoursesofferedwithintheSchoolofMusic,VoicePerformance(366)majorsarestronglyadvisedtocompleteaminimumoffour(4)semestersofcollege-levelstudyinforeignlanguageaspartofthedegreeprogram; aminimumoffoursemestersofGerman,French,ItalianorSpanishbyadvisement. StudentsintheAppliedMusic(336)degreeprogramarehighlyencouragedtocompletethislanguagerequirement,thusutilizingforeignlanguagestudytopartiallycompletetheneeded66credithoursoutsidethemajorarea.

PartIIJuriesandRecitalsVoiceJuryExaminationsVOICEJURIESAREREQUIRED.(SeeexceptionsonPage10)Voicejuriesareonewaythestudenthastodemonstratehis/herprogressinvoice.Atthesametime,voicejuriesoffertheVoiceFacultyanopportunitytoevaluatethestudent’saccomplishmentsinvocalperformanceinrelationshiptothelevelofstudy(MUS126,MUS345,etc.)aswellasinrelationshiptothestudent’scurriculum.Inaddition,thejuriesaffordanopportunityforthefacultytoofferwrittencommentsinorderthatthestudentmaycontinuetogrowasayoungmusician/performer.Numerousfactorsmayenterintoafacultymember’sevaluationofthejury.Someveryimportant(notnecessarilyinpriorityorder)facultyconsiderationsare:1.QualityofPreparation.Including,butnotlimitedtothefollowing:*Accuracy,intermsofcorrectpitchesandrhythms,withgooddiction*Well-preparedaccompanimentsandagoodsenseofensemble*Phrasing,tempo,andsuitabilityofrangeandtessitura*Understandingofthetext~Thereisnosubstituteforthoroughandaccuratepreparation!2.QualityoftheVocalInstrument.Thesizeofthevoiceisonlyonecriterionforjudginginthiscategory.Factorsofimportancearebeautyandclarityoftone,range,vibrato,flexibility,intonation,andtheabilitytosingalegatoline.Thefacultypreferstohearavocaltonewhichisappropriatetotheageofthestudentandhis/herapparentvocalmaturity.3.QualityofthePerformance.Inadditiontoallofthepreviouslymentioneditemsweareconcernedwithfactorssuchas:*Genuineunderstandingofthewords*Expressivevaluesthatarehonest,thoughtful,andinterestingtothelistener*Genuineemotionalinvolvementwiththetext*Desiretocommunicatethemeaningofthewordsandmusic*Anapparentenjoymentof,andcommitmentto,theactofsingingWeasmusiciansareprivilegedtorecreateinourperformancesthemusicofgreatcomposers.TheVoiceFacultyviewsthisindeedasaprivilegeandasaresponsibility.Ourloveoftheartformcanhelpustomeetthechallengeofvocalperformance.Approachthevoicejuriesinthisspirit.ItwasyourloveofmusicwhichbroughtyoutoFredoniainthefirstplace--continuetogrowthroughitandwithit.JuryRequirementsFreshmen-SemesterI,allmajorsThree(3)selectionspreparedandpresentedatthejury.Selectionspresentedatthejurymustincludeatleasttwo(2)languagesandpiecesofcontrastingstyles.Freshmen-SemesterIIPerformance(366)*,MusicalTheatre(303)andMusicEducation(152)Four(4)selectionspreparedandpresentedatthejury.Selectionspresentedatthejurymustincludeatleasttwo(2)languagesandpiecesofcontrastingstyles.*Performance(366)Note:TheSemesterIIjurywillalsofunctionasanauditionforcontinuationintheperformancemajorbeyondthefreshmanyear.

RecitalHearings&RecitalLengthsEveryvoicestudentmustpassaRecitalHearingadjudicatedbytheVoiceFacultybeforetheymaypresentanycurricularrecital.Ahearingwillbescheduledaminimumoftwoweeksbeforetherecitaldate.Allpersonsparticipatingintherecitalmustattendthehearing.Atthattimetherecitalistwillpreparecopiesoftheproposedrecital,withaccuratetimingslistedbyeachset,fortheVoiceFaculty.Therecitalistwillbepreparedtosingtheentireprogramfrommemory.Whiletimelimitationsmayrestrictlisteningtothecompleterecital,thefacultywillpickatrandomfromtheprogramandatleastoneselectionfromeachgroupofsongswillbeheard.TheVoiceFacultywillconsiderqualityofpreparation(e.g.,accuracyofpitchesandrhythms,diction,phrasingandtempo,ensemble,understandingoftext)andqualityofperformance(e.g.,expressiveness,genuineunderstandingofthewords,communicationofemotion)todeterminetheoutcomeofthehearing.StudentsshouldalsorefertotheSchoolofMusicRecitalHandbookforfurtherinformation.
