OAH monitored Gorkhaptra Kohalpur, January 10, 2014 Terai Human Rights Protection Network 'Third Alliance' monitored Nepalgunj based Bheri old age home after local media reported about expulsion of two old women from the OAH. The Alliance found that the two women left OAH on their own decision and were not forced out.

Transport entrepreneurs urged to provide facility to senior

citizens Nepal Samcharpatra Dhankuta, January 14, 2014 District Traffic Police Office, Dhankuta urged the public transport owners to give first priority to their senior citizen passengers. Additionally, the office advised to reserve some seats exclusively for the elderly and women.

Dhotre builds OAH selling her US house Gorkhapatra Illam, January 20, 2014 Prem Kumari Dhotre, who has been living in the US, has built a two-room concrete house for the senior citizens. She spent Rs. 1.2 million to construct the new building, which she got by selling her house in the U.S.A.

Support to old age home Gorkhapatra Bhaktapur, January 20, 2014 SriddhomaJagat OAH of Madhyapur, Thimi received support worth Rs. 8.17 million both in cash and kind. According to Treasurer of the OAH Indrahari Buda Shrestha, the assistance of Rs. 6.4 million was collected by organizing a Mahayajya (a religious ritual) and other support came as donation from several generous individuals and organizations.

New provision introduced on Social Security Allowance Nepal Samacharpatra Kathmandu, January 3, 2014 The government in its new budget introduced a provision to provide social security allowance to all single women from the day they become widow. Earlier, only the widows aged 60 and over were entitled to receive the allowance. Likewise, anyone above the age of 70 will now be eligible to enjoy the social security allowance i.e., OAA. In the past, the minimum age to receive OAA was 75 years. The people living in the remote areas including Karnali region will get Rs. 500 OAA a month from the day they enter inter 60th of life.

Senior citizens do not get allowance due to VDC Secretary’s negligence Annapurna Post Mahottari, January 19, 2014 Senior citizens of five Village Development Committees in Mahottari were unable to receive social security allowance due to negligence from the VDC secretaries. District Development Committee did not allocate budgets to the VDCs, when the secretaries of those VDCs failed to submit the details of the allowance they have distributed in the past.

Special allowance for people aged over 88 Gorkhapatra Kathmandu, January 24, 2014 The Katmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) office has published an advertisement informing the senior citizens who have crossed the age of 88 years by July 2013 and who possess the voter's identity card distributed for the Constituent Assembly election 2013 to contact the concerned Ward offices by mid-February. KMC has decided to provide Rs. 10,000 annually to each senior citizen aged over 88 through a special program.

VDC secretaries and LDOs misuse social security allowance Gorkhapatra Parbat, January 25, 2014 Social security allowance is meant for the senior citizens, disabled, Dalits and single women. However, in Parbat district, the allowance reaches VDC secretaries and LDO, not the targeted groups. These corrupt government officials are found misappropriating the allowance by preparing fake documents.

Former Indian Gurkhas demand pensions Gorkhapatra Butwal, January 15, 2014 Former Indian Gurkhas who fought the Indo-China war demanded that they should be provided pension equal to their Indian counterparts. No decisions have been made on their behalf, though they have been raising their voice since long. It was reported that they have staged sit-in at Embassy of India to Nepal, hand over memorandum to the concern ministry and organized protest rallies in Butwal and various other places in the past.

Old tillers seek justice Kantipur Banke, Januray 15, 2014 A group of old tillers were seen standing in queue braving the shivering cold in front of Department of Land Reform, Banke district. All these old men aged over 60 have been visiting the office for the past one and half decades seeking rights for the land they have been cultivating for the past 46 years. But the department shows no concern towards their issue as the Tillers rights was abolished since long.

Rikshaw driver stages fast-unto-death Gorkhapatra Jaleshwor, January 24, 2014 Sixty-year-old Raj Kishor Shah, a Rikshaw driver of Sundarpur- 4 in Mahottari, has staged a fast-unto-death demanding immediate action against the corrupt VDC secretaries. He took the move when no action was taken against those involved in misusing the fund of Sundarpur VDC and a school there, reported Shah.

90 year old lady distributes sweaters & caps Gorkhapatra Tahahu, January 26, 2014 Ninety-year-old Draupada Sharma Pokhrel distributed sweaters and woolen caps to 65 poor students of Janata Lower Secondary School of Ahalechaur in Byas Municiplaity- 9. She spent Rs. 40,000 to buy the sweaters and caps.

Government job at 80! Gorkhaptra Chitwan, January 1, 2014 Employees in the government offices receive compulsory retirement at the age of 58, but Man BahadurMagar, a resident of Chandibhanjyang in Chitwan district is still working in the government office at the age 80. He has been working in the additional post office for the last 35 years and his job is to bring the letters and parcels to the additional post office of Kaule VDC from the District Post Office. His monthly salary is Rs. 4,000 (about US $ 40).

A hundred-year-old veteran Annapurna Post Dhading, January 15, 2014 Suka Dev Ghimire, a resident of Dhading looks like he is in his 80s even at the age of 100. He can see easily and walk with the help of a stick, but cannot hear properly. He still has strong teeth for chewing food. Born in 1913, he served in the British Army from 1940 to 1946 and fought the World War II with Japan. Ghimire, who lost all the certificates and insignias received from the British Army for his contribution, has been living with his elder daughter after his son and daughter-in-law denied feeding him.
