HelpAge Sri Lanka started Microfinance for Elders jointly with Berendina Microfinance Institute (BMI) HASL mission is to improve quality of life of all senior citizens in Sri Lanka. In order to achieve this goal, HASL since its inception is working to provide Health and Eye Care, empowerment/advocacy programmes, disaster risk reduction, management of water and sanitation and livelihood support.

HASL has more than two decades of experience working with vulnerable senior citizens across the country. Sri Lanka being one of the most effected countries will have to face the challenge of looking after 20% population, which will be over the age of 60 in 2025. In 2040, this percentage will increase to 25% of the total population; therefore, HASL has been trying to empower the elders economically to ease their hardships and the difficulties faced by their family members due to dependency. The venture with Berendina Microfinance Institute is one of the attempts made by the HASL to improve the earning capacity of the elders.

In this venture Berendina Microfinance Institute has worked as an execution Agency while HASL provide financial input for the loan programme to which so far released Rs.3,000,000.00/- to provide Livelihood Loans for the senior citizens in Kegalle and Nuwara Eliya districts. This programme is done under Sponsor a Grandparent (SaG) Programme funded by HelpAge International.

Livelihood Loan Programme Main objective of this programme is to improve the earning capacity of senior citizens who are engaged with livelihood activities. It will help the senior citizens to lead a happy healthy life with dignity in rest of their lives. Table No 1 shows the Loan distribution pattern of the livelihood programme.
