MUSINGS FROM AIPAC POLICY CONFERENCE AS WE APPROACH ISRAEL’S 70TH BIRTHDAY

As I write these words I am on a train headed home from this year’s AIPAC policy conference in Washington, DC. Together with a small delegation from our congregation, we were blessed to spend the past few days with over 18,000 people committed to promoting a strong, bipartisan and enduring relationship between the United States and Israel. Jews across all denominations and affiliations, and members of other faith traditions and cultural backgrounds came together in support of ensuring a strong and lasting relationship between the US and Israel. As in years past, AIPAC did not disappoint; between break-out sessions on a wide range of topics, hosted by people on all sides of the political spectrum and speakers

that included members of Congress who don't seem to agree on much else in these hyper-partisan political times, we spent a great deal of time hearing about Iran and challenges on Israel's Northern border, BDS, the recent decision to move our embassy to Jerusalem, the challenges of the current stalemate with the peace process, and the importance of working to ensure that Israel has enough funding to ensure her security.

In addition, we heard from a variety of speakers about Israeli innovations and took some time to honor some of Israel's history as we approach the 70th anniversary of her existence this year! There is one session, however, that stood out to me above the rest. We were honored to hear from Natan Sharansky, a former minister in the Knesset, Chairman of the Jewish Agency, and the symbol for the movement to free Soviet Jewry from communist oppression in the 1980s. Appearing alongside his daughter, Rachel Sharansky Danziger, the two were discussing the historic movement, the unity that seemed to bring American Jewry together (in reality, Sharansky said it was quite fractured at the time), and the significance of Israel's acceptance of so many Soviet Refusenicks. Their conversation was inspiring and very emotional, as I recalled hearing about all of this as a young child in grade school. And then it hit me. My children, and the many teenagers and college students in the room with me had no concept of experiencing what was being discussed. They have no real memory of Israel’s role as providing safe-haven for Jews around the world. They have little emotional investment or lived understanding of the historic narratives that include Israel’s rise from the ashes of the shoah, the six-day war, the Yom Kippur War, Soviet Jewry, or operations Moses and Solomon which brought massive waves of Ethiopian Jews to Israel. As Israel turns 70 this year, many of these millenials have only known Israel as a strong, innovative, and military power who is in a never-ending conflict with the Palestinians and her neighbors. Some of them, understandably, are challenged by the complicated and less than perfect aspects of Israel and Israeli society. They approach Israel from a different lens than me, of many who are reading this column. And that is why I want to encourage all of you to do one thing: share your narratives of Israel with your children and grandchildren. Help them to have a sense of the history that you have witnessed. Invite them to have a conversation with you about Israel. Make sure to listen to their thoughts, criticisms, and questions about where Israel has come and where Israel is going as it completes its seventh decade.

Natan Sharansky and his daughter were serving as inspirational witnesses to history for all of us in the room on that morning. Each one of us, to the extent that we are able, has the responsibility to do the same for our children and grandchildren as Yom Ha-atzmaut, Israel's independence day, approaches.

May the next 70 years of Israel's existence be filled with peace and security with her neighbors.

May each of us endeavor to understand our history so that we can learn from it, and may Israel take

lessons from her history as she strives to live up to her highest ideals and aspirations. And may all

of us, our children, and our grandchildren, never forget that we too are a part of the amazing and

incredible story that is the return of the Jews to our national homeland, Medinat Yisrael, the state of

Israel.

Lunch N'Learn: Journey Through The Prophets

We read the Haftarah, a selection taken from the Book of Prophets, in synagogue every week. Often these Haftorot

are challenging to understand both in terms of their

context and relevance to modern day life. Just who were these "prophets?" Why were they so important to Biblical

Israel and why do we continue to read about them today? When did they live? What did they preach? And what

messages do they have for modern day society? Come

and join us for an introductory look at the Prophets in the Hebrew Bible. Bring your friends, your questions, and an

openness to the wisdom of some of our earliest teachers and leaders. No previous Bible study necessary. We look

forward to seeing you!

Rabbi, Dr., Abraham Joshua Heschel was one of the prominent Jewish figures of the 20th century. A leading

rabbi, philosopher, theologian, and scholar -- Heschel's

influence on the American Jewish community in general and the Conservative movement in particular cannot be

overstated. Come and join us as we spend a few weeks scratching the surface of this towering Jewish figure by

exploring some of Heschel's most significant thoughts and

writings and their relevance today. As always, feel free to bring a friend; our classes are open to the community!

RELIGIOUS SCHOOL CHAI LITES

April is filled with exciting events taking place! Please make sure to be on the lookout for email reminders! April 11th is Yom Hashoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day! We have invited survivors in to tell their stories. I am looking forward to a positive, uplifting, emotional, inspiring evening. This event will take place during Hebrew High time of 6:15-8:15 pm. Seventh grade will be attending during that time as well. This will guide their graduation speeches. April 27th is the Shabbat Service led by grades 2-6. The students have been practicing and they sound wonderful! I can’t wait to see this in action! April 29th is the Hebrew High/7th grade trip into NYC. We will be visiting the Jewish Heritage Museum, seeing Blue Man Group, and eating at Ben’s Deli. More details to follow! May 3rd, Hebrew High will be volunteering at Fulfill. This is a Thursday; we will NOT be having Hebrew High on May 2nd. This is in replace of traditional school. Grades 2-6 WILL have Hebrew School on May 2nd. I wish you and your family a happy and healthy Passover! Please remember Hebrew School is closed 3/31-4/7. Hebrew High will resume April 11th, with our Holocaust Interviews for Hebrew High and 7th grade!

Lioness is a gripping and detailed biography of Golda Meir, whose life

and career are a lens through which the author examines Israel’s

challenges – issues of borders, settlements, terrorism, and social and

ethnic divides. As a Russian woman who emigrated to the US at age

eight and moved to Palestine in 1921, Golda went on to become a key

political figure in Israel’s rise to statehood and its only female prime

minister. This book follows the trajectory of her career from Zionist

fundraising in the US to government positions under David Ben-Gurion,

from leader of her country to her political fall from grace after the Yom

Kippur War.

Francine Klagsbrun is the author of more than a dozen books and has

written for many Jewish publications as well as for The New York

Times and the Boston Globe. She was influential in the earliest days of

feminism and the women’s movement.
