Sukkot and Simchat Torah: Wait, Wait- It's Not Over Just Yet!
By the time that you are reading this, the High Holiday season will be in full swing. We are very much looking forward to seeing you over these Yamim Noraim, Days of Awe! I say that because between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, I imagine that many of you reading this article right now will be spending a lot of time around the synagogue in the coming few days. After all, that is what Jews do during this time of year. We come to pray, to reflect, to work on improving our souls and our relationships, and yes, we even come to shmooze with those who we have not seen in a while.
But I want to let you in on a secret: If you only take advantage of joining us for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur during this High Holiday season, you will have missed half of the festivities. It is almost like going to a baseball game and leaving in the fifth inning when the score is even and you are not sure how the game is going to end. What do I mean? What part of the High Holiday experience are you missing if you leave after Yom Kippur? The best part, the joyous part, the part filled with fun, love, sharing and joy -- the festivals of Sukkot and Simchat Torah.
After the serious work of introspection and self-renewal of the High Holidays come the joyous celebrations of Sukkot, Shemini Atzeret, and Simchat Torah. We build sukkot and celebrate with our family and our friends. This joyous time is actually called zman simchateynu, the festival of our joy. It is a time to recognize that yes, life can be serious and fragile, but we must remember to live an open life in which we reach out to others, deepen our relationships, and simply share the joy of being blessed and alive with our friends, family, and community. As Rabbi Nina Beth Cardin writes:
This holiday helps us understand that sometimes the walls that we build to protect us serve instead to divide us, cut us off, lock us in. The walls of our sukkot may make us vulnerable, but they make us available too, to receive the kindness and the support of one another, to hear when another calls out in need, to poke our heads in to see whether anybody is up for a chat and a cup of coffee. In contrast, our walls of concrete and steel can enslave us in our own solitude and loneliness. Sukkot reminds us that freedom is enjoyed best not when we are hidden away behind our locked doors, but rather when we are able to open our homes and hearts to one another. (Tapestry of Jewish Time, 86-87)
But it doesn't end there. After a week of eating with friends, relaxing outdoors (if it is not too cold and wet this year!), and spending time with loved ones, we are invited to continue the celebration of life and of our Judaism with Simchat Torah, a separate holiday that is all about the “simcha,” the joy of living a Jewish life, a life dedicated to Torah.
Here is Rabbi Cardin on the joy that comes with celebrating Simchat Torah:
On Simchat Torah we clear away the seats and dance...everyone joins in... the Torah scrolls are held by eve-ryone who desires to hold them. To be given a Torah to hold is to be given a license to dance. The first time one holds the Torah is often a moment of elation as well as a rite of adulthood, like being given the keys to the family car… Supportive and encouraging the congregation dances — with abandonment and love, with joy and energy. Jews dance in the synagogue and in the halls, on the lawn and on the streets. (Tapestry of Jewish Time, 91)
When I was a child, I loved Sukkot and I loved Simchat Torah. I remember schlepping the huge wooden walls of the sukkah and helping my mom decorate the walls with drawings from school, as we hung plastic fruit from the ceiling. We would eat in the sukkah, have guests over, and just enjoy relaxing in one another's company. And when it came to Simchat Torah, I always had a blast in synagogue. Why? Because I was finally allowed to run around and dance with joy (I didn't sit still very well back then... not sure how much has changed!). I will always remember the sing-ing, clapping, and dancing with the Torah while waving toy flags and eating popcorn and candy apples at my syna-gogue in San Diego. While I did not yet appreciate the meaning behind what we were doing, I understood the joy and power of the moment.
Of course, Sukkot and Simchat Torah can only truly be joyous if they are celebrated as a community and shared with one another. To that end, I would like to invite you to join us for the rest of the High Holidays, for the second half of the ball game! Join us for any or all of the festivities listed in the calendar on this bulletin’s back page. We hope to see you there!
Bring your family, your friends, and guests from the community as we celebrate this second half of the season to-
gether. Our tradition teaches in Proverbs 3:18 that etz hayim hi l’machazikim bah -- the Torah is a life to those who
grab hold of it. Join us and grab hold of the Torah as we bring in the New Year with family, friends, food, song,
laughter, and dance. And of course, a happy, healthy and meaningful 5777 to all of you.

Rabbi Schonbrun’s
Course Offerings Lunch ’n Learn - Journey Through The Torah
We read the Torah in synagogue every week, often choosing a verse or a narrative to study on Shabbat morning. But how many of you have read through the Torah carefully from cover to cover, studying each verse and each chapter of the world's longest "best seller?" Just what exactly is contained in these Five Books of Moses, and how can our most sacred text address some of the most pressing issues of our lives and of our world? To find out answers to these questions and more, come and join us once a week for a journey through the Torah. Bring your friends, your questions, and an openness to letting the words of Torah touch your heart and soul. No previous Bible study necessary. We look forward to seeing you! Wednesdays, beginning October 26 - 12:00-1:00pm L’dor va-dor: Sharing Our Values From Generation to Generation
L’dor va-dor -- for thousands of years our people have passed on our heritage and the communal story of our people “from generation to generation.” Although the spoken word plays a large role in Judaism, it is the written word, the stories that are written down, and retold, that have ultimately ensured our survival.
This course will encourage us to answer the question found at the center of the national hit Broadway show Hamilton, which asks the audience to consider: "Who lives, who dies, who tells your story? Wednesdays, November 9, 16, 30, December 7, 14 7:30pm
Jewish Values and the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict-Cost?
Through video lectures, text study, and lively group discussion, we are pleased to bring the world-renowned faculty of the Shalom Hartman Institute into the Torat El community.
Through the study of Jewish narratives about Israel and the unpacking of the complex meanings of peace in Jewish tradition, we will explore the ideas and values that animate different attitudes toward the conflict and how these values shape our own political understandings of the situation. Though our political opinions and suggestions concerning how to handle the Israeli-Palestinian conflict may not always be in agreement, this course strives to achieve a shared respect for our differences.
Each session includes text study and discussion led by Rabbi Schonbrun, a video lecture by Rabbi Dr. Donniel Hartman, and a video dialogue between Rabbi Hartman and other top scholars and experts. Join us for this wonderful opportunity to learn from great scholars, from our own Rabbi Schonbrun, and from one another as we engage in thinking about the Jewish values that underlie one of the most politically sensitive and difficult issues facing the Jewish people and the international community.
$20 per person/couple for study guide
In order for us to have enough study guides, please register with the office for this class by January 4th.
Wednesdays, January 18, 25, February 1, 8, 15, 22, March 1, 8, 15 - 7:30-9:15pm You’re Jewish?!? Taking a 21st Century Look at Jews and Jewish Identities
What does it mean to be a Jew in the twenty-first century? What characteristics define Judaism today? Are we a culture, ethnicity, nation, nationality, or religion? Come and join us as we explore a new book written by Dr. Aaron Hahn Tapper of the University of San Francisco entitled: "Judaisms: A Twenty-First Century Introduction to Jews and Jewish Identity. Using a variety of themes related to Jewish identity, we will explore a diversity of voices in the Jewish community from the biblical period through today to see how our customs, practices, and beliefs impact the way in which we understand our identity as Jews today. Wednesdays, April 26, May 3, 10, 17 - 7:30pm

As we move into the High Holiday season, my mind cannot help but think about those we have lost this last year and in the more distant past. While I think fondly of those close to me, I also think about the process of dealing with that loss, particularly for those in the immediate family. Dealing with funeral plans, obituaries, estate issues, Shiva planning, all while at the same time trying to come to grips with what has happened and how it impacts our lives and the lives of those around us is difficult.
While having these thoughts, I am also reminded of the role our Rabbi, office staff, and greater Temple community play during such difficult times -- everything from officiating at a funeral service, to coordinating burial plots if needed, to ensuring that there is someone to lead a Shiva service and a minyan is present. The efforts of the Temple’s professionals and lay leaders are really extraordinary in such times of individual and family need. They know what to do, how to do it, and simply put, just get it done.
So, this year, when you are considering your Kol Nidre pledge in our silent appeal, remember one of the reasons why it is important to have the Temple in your life. To be there for those times for which you don’t plan and cannot predict when they will occur, only that they will surely come. Help ensure that that our synagogues’s professionals, lay leaders and family will be able to be here for the times you need us the most.
Your generosity is greatly appreciated.
L’Shanah Tovah,
Larry
We are a community that cares for each other and honors our differences. We welcome all who wish to be part of something greater than themselves in the present and something that will
nurture and ensure our future.
When our ancestors brought gifts from their hearts for the construction of the Tabernacle (Exodus 35), they did so to help create a community. So do we ask you to give from your heart in
support of our Kehillah Kedosha, our sacred community.
To honor the sanctity of Yom Kippur, we silently make this appeal to you, for your help in fortifying and sustaining our community for now and for generations to come.
If you’ve already made your pledge, thank you for your support and generosity.
May you be inscribed in the Book of Life for a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year.

In a few weeks, Sisterhood will be launching our 2016-2017 season of the Min Pincow Memorial Raffle.
We hope you will be a participant. For those not familiar with the raffle, here’s a brief explanation:
We have 100 available numbers (00-99), with one drawing each month for ten months. Each
monthly ticket costs $10.00. You may purchase ten tickets (one for each month) for $100,
payable in one or two installments. The winner each month receives one-half of the proceeds
from the number of tickets sold for that month. (This is a true fifty-fifty.) NOTE: If we are
successful in selling all 100 numbers, the monthly winner will receive $500!!
This raffle was started many years ago by Temple Beth El’s Sisterhood, and has been continued by the
Congregation Torat El Sisterhood. It is named after Min Pincow, a dedicated TBE member, who had
originally conceived of the idea for the raffle. Many ticket-holders have had the same numbers for years,
and will continue to keep those numbers, should they so choose (and most do). However, there is still a
supply of lucky numbers available, and we invite one and all to participate.
Be prepared to say “Count me in” when one of our Sisters contacts you regarding this year’s Raffle, and
GOOD LUCK! Let’s hope you’re a winner.
