Celebrating Our Volunteer Lay Leadership When I was a rabbinical student at the Jewish Theological Seminary, I simultaneously pursued a Masters Degree from the School of Education. I chose to write my Master's Thesis on the Role of the Rabbi in Synagogue Education. While some of my information came from written work in the field, much of it came from anecdotal interviews with colleagues across the country. I remember setting up a list of questions to ask my colleagues, some of which centered around the role that synagogue volunteers and leaders played in the educational life of the synagogue.
When I asked one nationally well regarded colleague about the role that his leadership played in this area, he looked at me and said: "Aaron, you can't get anywhere in synagogue life without your lay leadership. Without their help, you simply can't move. Remember that." Over the years that have followed I have come to appreciate just how correct he was in that statement. As Rabbi Terry Bookman and Dr. William Kahn write:
A synagogue cannot fulfill its mission as a kehillah kedosha, a sacred community, without the hard work and dedication of its volunteers in general, and its Board of Directors in particular. Without the cooperation and collaboration between clergy, staff, and lay leadership, very little can get accomplished in a synagogue. It is the lay leadership who is primarily responsible for setting out the vision, policies, and future direction of the synagogue, all the while working to ensure that the synagogue is on a healthy and secure financial footing.
The Board of Directors sanctions the governance of the synagogue. Tasks often include legal oversight, hiring and firing of key staff, selection and election of leadership, policy formation, resource development, creation and oversight of an annual budget, evaluation procedures, board recruitment, human resource development, planning, and program development.... Lay leaders thus govern. Governing is different than managing...Board thus authorizes individuals -- the board president, executive director, and rabbi -- to make management decisions on their behalf while retaining oversight capability. This is the ideal.
Rabbis need lay leaders just as the congregation and its leaders need rabbis... It is only through partnership that the synagogue can remain strong and vibrant. (Bookman, Kahn, This House We Build, ch. 14)
I share all of this because on Erev Shabbat, Friday, June 12th at 6:30pm, we will take a moment to celebrate our lay leadership as we discharge and install officers from our Board of Trustees, Sisterhood, and Men's Club. I invite you to join us in this celebration to show your appreciation to our lay leaders who do so much for this congregation. The amount of work, care, time, and dedication that these volunteers put into making our synagogue the wonderful, sacred community that it is simply cannot be overstated. If you cannot make it, I encourage you to reach out to our leadership and thank them for their hours of service to our community.
When the Tabernalce was built in the desert during biblical times, the Torah taught that Moses was to select individuals who were chacham lev, wise-hearted, as participants in the work of building this holy structure (Ex.36). As ancestors of those ancient Israelites, we at Congregation Torat El are blessed to have so many chachamei lev, people of wisdom, leading our community through the joys and challenges of created sacred community in the year 2015. Our lay leaders are thoughtful, hard working, and dedicated. Speaking personally, I am continually blessed to live in a community with a lay leadership that understands and values this language of partnership and is deeply committed to creating kehillah kedosha, sacred community. I would like to thank our outgoing president, Andrew Robins for his tireless efforts, his thoughtfulness, dedication, and vision over these past two years. In addition, I would like to personally extend my sincerest gratitude to each and every one of our lay volunteers and leaders for their service and dedication to our Torat El family. Because quite simply, we literally "could not move without them."
Hazak Hazak V'nithazek- May we go from strength to strength as we work together to strengthen our sacred
community of relationships.

GRATITUDE
This, as my last article as President of our Congregation, is my opportunity to express my thanks for the opportunity I have enjoyed over the last two years. Our traditions, those started here at Congregation Torat El and those brought forward from the teachings from our past as a people, stress the need to express gratitude.
I have been and continue to be privileged to follow the lead of my predecessors, Alan Stern and Gary Zimmerman, who served our Congregation with distinction. Amongst the wonderful traditions they established is a commitment to thank those who played key roles in our efforts and successes. It is my pleasure to do so here.
In expressing my gratitude, I am mindful that our traditions teach us that gratitude extends beyond the critical first step of saying "thank you." Gratitude in Hebrew can be expressed as hakarat hatov, "recognizing the good." In that context, "recognize" (hikir) means more than acknowledging a gift or benefit. Our tradition teaches us to look deeper. As a Jewish value, the expression of "gratitude" calls for us to go beyond the obvious reasons for giving thanks. As part of the effort to “recognize the good,” we must be mindful of the broader context of the targets of our appreciation. In that spirit I offer the following expressions of my gratitude:
♦ First, and foremost, I want to thank our entire Congregation. We have staff and lay leadership for the purpose of serving all of us. So, my first expression of gratitude is to all of you -- not just for your words and actions of support, but also the extraordinary value and importance of your criticisms and questions. Your willingness to engage in how our Congregation moves forward has brought me energy and warmth. Thank you.
♦ For me, the ability to work together based on broad consensus – a consensus built on mutual respect – is a hallmark of a healthy organization. I am proud to report that our Congregation is healthy. Our Board of Trustees continues to step up and step forward. Policy continues to be set based on careful contemplation and sharing of perspectives. Our committees remain the cornerstones of our work together implementing policies and making events happen. I am grateful to have been part of such a wonderful team of lay leaders.
♦ All of my gratitude for being able to work with our wonderful Board of Trustees and our committees extends to my fellow Executive Board members and then further. You have been my touchstones, confidants, guides, partners, colleagues, and more. My gratitude for being able to work with all of you is only eclipsed by my happiness in knowing that our Congregation is in the best of hands going forward.
♦ A key aspect to any Congregation's success is the ability of the lay leadership to work hand-in-glove with the Congregation's staff to move initiatives forward, coordinate and implement our programs, and to "be there" for our members. Of all the ways lay leadership and staff can function, the best model is when each has a defined role and set of responsibilities but work together to create a virtually seamless unit dedicated to accomplishing the Congregation's goals. I have enjoyed being part of such a partnership these past two years. The fact that my partners are warm, caring, and considerate people has increased my positive experiences immeasurably.
When I started my term, we had a full agenda of proposed dynamic steps forward. With everyone pulling together, we have accomplished that full agenda and more.
We have embarked on a program of increased engagement and participation. Transparency continues to be improved, empowering increased engagement. We have reconfigured our staff to increase outreach and implementation of our programs while working within a lower budget. Our search for and welcoming of Rabbi Metz brought our best qualities forward. The adoption of our Sustainability Program has increased our sense of connection and has already resulted in new members. With Ben Laskowitz's caring support we continue to have dramatically increased ritual engagement. More than one hundred congregants have led or participated in services over the past year including my wife Michele who just finished her third Torah reading of the year and is practicing her fourth.
Our shift to a Shabbat Religious School Program is creating the opportunity for multi-generational and community-based spirituality and learning. We have improved our financial outlook even after overcoming unexpected challenges, such as the emergency repairs to our sanctuary at the start of my term. We moved forward to decrease our carbon footprint with new solar and recycling projects. Accessibility to our building was improved as was our sound, lighting, and security systems. Most recently, we have embarked on expanding our programs for the youngest of our community as we explore Early Learning and summer youth programs. For all the work we have done together, I am truly grateful to have had the opportunity to help lead us as we have continued to create our
Congregation Torat El.
But of all of our steps forward, the most critical from my perspective is our renewed spirit of being a committed, welcoming, and engaged Congregation dedicated to our mission as a "Community Building Relationships." For that, my gratitude extends beyond
the bounds of what mere words can express.
Looking forward to seeing all of you. Andrew Robins

ANDONOR LAUNCHES MATCHING GRANT FOR COMMUNITY BREAK FAST
Yasher Koach to our Bar Mitzvah
My name is Robert Jeffrey and I am a 7th grader at Ocean Township Intermediate School. I will become a Bar Mitzvah on June 13th. I would like to share my Mitzvah Project with you, I have been preparing to follow in my family’s tradition and join in the fight against Multiple Sclerosis. But with all my good intention and preparation unfortunately I will not be able to ride this year so my mitzvah will continue until I meet my goal and participate in the MS Ride 2016 “Coast the Coast.” But as a Bar Mitzvah I feel the immediate need to help with many causes. My friends and I have had lemonade stands for multiple charities. This
past weekend we raised money to help the people of Nepal, and in the past we raised money for childhood cancer with our lemonade stands. So remember if you are thirsty on a hot day to stop by and quench your thirst with a donation to a meaningful cause.
Congregation Torat El is thrilled to announce a very generous donor is launching a matching grant challenge to ensure the continuation of our break fast following Yom Kippur services. Any donations to the Break Fast Fund received between now and July 31st will be matched. If you give $50, the Break Fast Fund receives $100. Please make checks payable to Congregation Torat El and write Break Fast Fund in the memo. Yasher koach to our matching grant donor and to all of you for your support and continued generosity!
