Wow - a thunderstorm in northeast Ohio on January 16th. I am sitting in my office as I am typing this column, watching this storm roll in and it is really sort of surreal. I work at ASM International which is a very unique building out in Novelty – the office building sits under a large geodesic dome. The dome is 103 feet high and built out of 12 miles of aluminum tubing and the wind surging through it sounds like a freight train. What a crazy winter this.

I am ready for our typical Cleveland winter to kick in however. The Porsche is put away and all of the racetracks are closed, so if we got some snow we could at least get some skiing in to help pass the time. Other than that all there is to do is work, drink beer, keep active at the gym, drink some beer, go sledding with the kids, drink some beer, and plan out this year’s PCA events!

We are looking to have a full calendar of events that offer something for everyone no matter what their interests are. There will be Social events including favorites such as house parties and the New Member’s party at Porsche of Beachwood, a walking rally this winter as well as the typical summertime driving rally, the IRAC autocross series, and the Drivers Ed events at Mid-Ohio and Nelson Ledges. Keep an eye on the calendar of events in the Voices as well as the website for upcoming events.

While there are all of the usual events we are always looking for new ideas. To that end, I will be sending out an email survey to all of our members get your input. This will help us figure out what events everyone likes, what we can do to make the existing events even better, and to get some ideas for new events.

Please keep an eye out for the survey and take a few minutes to give us your feedback.

My goal with the survey is to look for new ways to get people involved. We have over 600 members in our region, but less than half are actively involved with the club. So for those of you who have not gotten involved please give it a try. Come out to the New Members party in March, try one of the social events, or make a road trip to one of the tracks to check out what the Drivers Ed program is all about. Even “Liking” NORPCA on Facebook and posting up some pictures of your Porsche would be a great way to start your involvement with the club.

Some words of explanation about this month’s cover picture.

Long time PCA acquaintance and 356 fanatic Neil Goldberg suffered a serious health issue shortly after his return home from Rennsport Reunion IV this past October. His good friend Rick Riley from the Western Michigan Region PCA sent the following message:

“This is a 1958 Porsche 356 Speedster. The color is called “Stone Gray.” It was accepted to be exhibited at the Amelia Island Concours in March 2012, in Amelia Island Florida. It is an Honor just to be invited to this show. The man who assembled the car, Neil Goldberg suffered a massive stroke this fall and has some movement and is going through a long course of rehab. He was supposed to attend the show w/ me as it is his work that would be on display. I contacted Bill Warner, the chairman of the concours and explained what had happened to Neil. I asked if I could be considered for the show in 2013 in hopes that Neil might be able to attend. To my surprise they were very accommodating and have accepted “Stone Gray” for the 2013 show. Please keep Neil in your thoughts as he has a long hard road to travel. Please don’t take you health for granted.”

Neil’s many friends in NOR echo Rick’s sentiments. We hope for his complete recovery and that he is able to enjoy the fruits of his 356 labor at Amelia Island in 2013.

Even though it has barely seemed like a real Ohio winter (so far anyway!), it is time to start planning your spring and summer Driver’s Education events. A great way to kick off the spring season will be to attend the NORPCA spring Mid-Ohio event.

What is a Driver’s Education event? It is two full days, Saturday April 28 and Sunday April 29 of learning the capabilities of you and your car on a world-class road course facility in Lexington, OH, just 90 miles south of Cleveland. Drivers will be grouped according to experience to drive with an in-car instructor on the rolling layout of the 2.34 mile,14 turn circuit. There is also classroom instruction and a lapping day for instructors and experienced students on Friday April 27th. Come on out, it is a lot of fun so don’t let your car be a garage queen!

invitation to take a sweet porsche trip bob palmer

Have you ever been to the largest gathering of Porsche’s in the world? Need parts for your project or race car? Want to show your car off at a concours event? Like to autocross? Need to sell some unwanted parts? Like chocolate? Then the Central Pennsylvania PCA Porsche-only Swap Meet is for you!

Ava and I have attended this event several times, but last year it was Jim Forcina and I who traveled east and the first people we ran into were Gary and Landa Simmons, NOR members!

For 2012, we would like to have an NOR caravan to this event. We would meet at a convenient location and leave on Friday in the late morning/early afternoon and continue on to Hershey, PA to a motel that is inexpensive and close to the event. {the motel’s street address is 914!} There is a sports-type restaurant just down the road from the motel that we could go to for dinner that night and, the next morning,

we would do breakfast (we have a fantastic diner for this!) Then it would be on to the show.

Ava and I will be staying Friday and Saturday. You can just stay Friday, but it is a long drive back home after walking around all day.

There is a lot to see and do. Hershey has Chocolate World right next door and, if you haven’t been there, it is worth seeing. They have a great store if you need to buy some sweet treats.

The departure date is April 20th, the event day is the 21st and the autocross is on the 22nd. It takes about 5 to 6 hours to get there. Ava and I can make reservations at the motel for those who want to go (cost approximately $60/night). We already have a few people interested, so check your calender and let us know! Carol and I wanted to invite you and NOR to participate in an event that is being hosted by the local Mercedes club group. I thought that it might appeal to some of our PCA buddies. If you think that NOR members would be interested, please feel free to mention the tour in “Voices” and possibly place it on the 2012 calendar.

I hope you can attend, as well. I think you’ll find that the chosen roads are a really good option when you don’t want to drive on an actual race track. These are German-car-worthy roads.

THE OHIO BACKROADS ADVENTURE TOUR

A Four-Day Metric MilleDates – 8/5/12 through 8/9/12

The Ohio Backroads Adventure is a Great Lakes Regional event presented by the Western Reserve Section, Mercedes Benz Club of America. This is a four-day driving tour that will go through east-central and southeast Ohio featuring the “roads less traveled.”

Our stops will be interesting and not always seen by the everyday tourist. A husband-wife team developed this tour for you. Don and Carol Velcio’s varied interests were used to balance the roads and the stops to satisfy everyone in your group. Spend as much time or as little time as you desire at the various stops along the way.

The tour is not a rally, a race, or a speed contest of any kind. Everyone should observe all legal limits and their own personal limits as well.

Readers of Car and Driver magazine have read about the editors well-loved but secret roads through Ohio’s Appalachian mountain foothills. On this tour, you’ll drive many of our well-loved roads. Be warned – some roads will seem like never-ending ups and downs curving right and left. These are drivers’ roads. This isn’t going to be a cruise control snore down the interstate. (You’ll love it).

(On Christmas Eve NOR member Rick Thomas narrowly missed a real disaster with his Porsche…a carb fire that could have easily involved the entire car. Luckily, the fire was contained to one carb, and did put itself out. Subsequently, he did some fire extinguisher research and found the following article.It is being reprinted with permission from the Kansas City Region PCA newsletter, Der Sportwagon)

Fire safety is not one of those glamorous topics that people like to talk about. It can have a devastating impact, in the garage (and the kitchen, but hey, we are talking cars here!) as well as the car itself. And unfortunately, when a fire breaks out, it’s too late to start thinking about it. I have seen an increase in the number of car-b-q’s on the side of the road in the last several years, and the neighbor of a friend of mine lost his house last year due to a garage related fire, so this month, I’d like to address fire safety.

One caveat… I am not a fire safety professional, so please understand that I offer this as a way to get you thinking about the topic, and not as the last word in fire prevention or safety!

Prevention and PlanningIt’s best to avoid unplanned fires (yes, I am the master of the understatement), so working safe should always be your first consideration. The source of an unplanned fire can be electrical, heat sources, open flame (Mr. Blue Wrench, anyone?), static, combustible fumes or smoking, amongst others. Common sense rules apply here, if working around combustible materials, heat sources or open flames, you have to be more careful about your surroundings. Take care to make sure you are working in a well ventilated area, be aware of what you are doing and whenever possible, try

to make sure you have an extra hand in the garage so that if you light something up while focusing on whatever it is you are working on, they can keep an eye on what you can’t.

How many of you have a smoke detector in your garage? If you don’t, you might seriously think about doing so. It can definitely be annoying when it starts blaring at a false alarm due to some activity you are doing, but the one time it is not a false alarm, you will quickly forget about all the times it was wrong.

Secondly, if you have to deal with an unplanned fire, it is best to have a plan on how to deal with it. This involves making an initial assessment of the situation, planning an escape route, alerting everyone else in the house/garage so that they can escape, and fire containment/damage control. Your initial reaction if you see something going up in flames will be to try and put it out, but unless you address the source of the fire, it will continue to burn while you waste precious seconds that you could be using to make sure you and your loved ones are safe, so you have to be thinking clearly once you realize you

are in a risk situation. Any fire around a car involves the risk of gasoline adding to your problems, so if you can’t immediately figure out how you are going to put it out, your best bet will be to make sure you are out of harms way first, then start to figure out what you need to do to extinguish the flames.

The bottom line is that five minutes of thinking ahead can save a life, and house or a car. It doesn’t take a brain surgeon to come up with a plan, five minutes on Google will give you plenty of tips and things that you might not have otherwise considered and is time well spent.

Fire Extinguisher InformationThis leads me to the next obvious item that should be in your garage (and kitchen), fire extinguishers. They come in variety of products, designed for addressing

specific types of fires, with different ratings. The fire extinguisher that you will want inside your garage is different than the one that you will want inside your car, so choose carefully. The types of Classification are as follows:

Class A - Class A fire extinguishers are used on fires involving ordinary combustibles, such as wood, paper, cloth, rubber and some plastics.

Class B - Class B fire extinguishers are used on fires involving flammable liquids such as gasoline, oils, diesel fuel, grease, paints, thinners, etc.

Class C - Class C fire extinguishers are designated as Class C denoting that the agent in the fire extinguisher does not conduct electricity. Class C fires involve energized electrical equipment.

Class D - Class D fire extinguishers are used on fires involving combustible metals such as magnesium, titanium, aluminum, etc.

Class K - Class K fire extinguishers are used especially in the kitchen for cooking oil and grease fires involving kitchen appliances. These typically use foam that is excellent for smothering a fire.

The dry chemical (class A, B, C) put out gas/flammable liquid, electrical, and paper/wood/rubber. If you can only afford one fire extinguisher, this is the recommended one for your garage as it puts out just about everything. It also covers EVERYTHING with dust, can destroy electronics, and is very difficult to clean out of engine compartments on vehicles, so be aware of this. If you have a fire extinguisher specifically for your car, you might want to grab that one for any under hood fires, as it is likely a gas type instead.

CO2 are for class B and C fires (gas/flammable liquid, electrical). They will also work on paper/wood/rubber but are not recommended as they tend to blow that stuff around (causing more fires) and don’t provide continued suppression for burning wood or rubber - so it may light up again.

Halon used to be a popular fire extinguisher ingredient until they figured out how bad it was for the environment and so they are becoming scarce, and are being replaced with environmentally friendly replacements or the aforementioned CO2.

Fire extinguisher come in those handy red bottles of various shapes and sizes, marked with their Classification and almost all of them have a gauge near the nozzle to show how much of a charge it has. There is

a reason for that. Fire extinguishers don’t have the same shelf life as say, Twinkies do. They will lose pressure over time and need to be periodically checked and recharged so please make sure you pay attention to this. Most people don’t. Locally, there are several places that offer recharging services.

One other thing most folks don’t do until a fire breaks out is to actually pull the trigger on a fire extinguisher. If yours’ is getting close to recharge time, have some fun and give the neighbor kids something to talk about. Head outside and make sure you are standing upwind, pull the pin and then squeeze the trigger. It’s fun, but more importantly, it allows you get a sense of what is going to happen in the event you ever need to really use it. It will also make a bit of a mess but they are mostly non-

toxic these days, so if you shoot it off in the street in front of your house, you should be able to take care of it with a hose. Please take care that there are no cars downwind or you are liable to have some grumpy neighbors. Ahem… in retrospect, it might be a better idea to haul the kids down to the local fire department and let them coach you through it, as they are generally pretty happy to give a demonstration. Either way, there is no substitute for actually experiencing it before you need to actually need to use a fire extinguisher to put a fire out.

In closing, fire safety is a lot like personal safety when working in the garage. A little planning ahead of time can save a lot of pain and expense later.

• The third annual Winter Concourse at Porsche of the Village, Cincinnati, OH is planned for Saturday evening, February 25, 2012. This is a PCNA event that is also supported by the PCA Ohio Valley Region- you can contact the dealership for more information..

• The Rally Sport Region will be hosting its annual Mid-Winter Get Together at the Historic Holly Hotel on February 25th for great food, company and comedy. See the RSR website for details.

• Grand Am Racing season kicks off in Zone 4 with the Detroit Grand Prix at Belle Isle on June 1, 2, and 3, 2012. A Porsche Car Corral will be organized for all interested Porsche Owners.

• The following weekend, the same crowd will gather for the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course Grand Am Race in Lexington, OH on June 8, 9, and 10, 2012. A PCA Region will also host a Porsche Car Corral for Porsche Owners.

• The Southeast Michigan Region will hold their annual Club Race at Gingerman Raceway in South Haven, MI on June 15, 16, and 17, 2012. Watch their website for details.

• While not technically in Zone 4, the Annual PCA National Porsche Parade will be held in Salt Lake City, UT on July 7-14, 2012. Plan to join a bunch of other Zone 4 PCA members for fun in the mountains.

• The following weekend is the annual Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix at Schenley Park, PA on July 21 & 22, 2012. This is actually a week-long event with a great Concourse on Saturday, sponsored in part by the PCA Allegheny Region.

• The third Grand Am event in Zone 4 will be part of the Brickyard 400 Weekend in Indianapolis, IN on July 27, 28, and 29, 2012. . A PCA Region will host a Porsche Car Corral for Porsche Owners on Friday the 27th.

• The annual P2O event moves to Granville, OH on July 27-29, 2012, sponsored by the Mid-Ohio Region. Watch the www.P2O.us website for details.

• The Mid-Ohio Region will move its annual DE and Club Race event at the Mid Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington Ohio to the weekend of August 17-19th, 2012.

• And finally, join fellow PCA members for a memorable fall weekend at the Escape to the Ozarks in Eureka Springs, AR on November 9, 10, and 11, 2012. More information will be available as the event grows closer.

ethanol in the news & in your gas tank

(The following article appeared in the January 9, 2012 edition of Automotive News. It was forwarded to Voices by Chuck Stoddard. His comments are inserted in bold, italicized parenthesis.)

Ethanol Subsidy Dies, Auto Industry Shrugsby Christina Rogers

The Jan. 1 demise of a 30-yearfederal tax subsidy for corn based ethanol came and went as a so what moment in the auto industry.

Automakers and industry observers said it will have little impact on sales of so-called flex-fuel models—many of which roll through their lives, after winning federal fuel economy credits for their makers, without burning a drop of ethanol.

Car companies receive a credit toward their corporate average fuel economy for every model they build that is capable of burning E85—a blend of gasoline and up to 85 percent ethanol. (Even the A. News reporter got some story specifics messed up, stating that gasoline had 85%. It should have been 15% content which is typical these days. Well, that’s not quite right—there is 10-15% in normal gasoline, & 85% in the so-called other clean stuff, which is insanity.) The credit allows automakers to sell more low-mpg vehicles and still meet CAFÉ requirements. But the incentive was dropped in the fuel economy rules proposed for the 2017-2025 model years, which will be made final this year.

The Obama administration has made a big push for electric vehicle technology, and included in the proposed new rules are credits aimed at getting more battery-powered cars on the road. (The “Administration Justification” was that electric cars are a better bet—yeah,

sure—AND how about the cost of those 7&8 speed transmissions, which I bet will improve “gas mileage” less than taking out the ethanol?)

“The more money they can take out of the ethanol market, the more they can put into the EV market,” said Mike Omotoso, a senior analyst at forecasting firm LMC Automotive.

Even so, General Motors, Ford Motor Co. and Chrysler Group say they plan to continue building flex-fuel vehicles. Toyota, Nissan, Mercedes-Benz and Bentley also offer engines that burn E85, but in fewer models.

The Detroit 3 produce the industry’s largest share of flex-fuel models—a strategy that goes back to 2006, when GM, Ford and Chrysler pledged to make 50 percent of their production flex-fuel compatible by this year. “this is not a disrupter,” said Mart Beth Stanek, GM’s director of energy and environmental regulatory affairs.

“This was well anticipated. The industry is mature enough to manage it and everyone will continue to stay the course.”

GM offers 20 models equipped with flex-fuel engines, including the new 2012 Buick Verano. About 40 percent of its production for the 2011 model year can run on E85, GM said.

Ford, which offers seven flex-fuel models, also remains committed to build engines capable of running on the gasoline-ethanol blend.

“Biofuels are a key piece of our blueprint for sustainability to reduce CO2,” Ford said in a statement.

The Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers, an auto industry trade group that represents 12 automakers, including the

Detroit 3, said it had no position on the expiration of the ethanol tax subsidy.

The government’s subsidy for corn-based ethanol has been controversial. The Bush administration made a big push for the biofuel source last decade as a way to lessen the nation’s dependence on foreign oil, but its luster faded as other alternative fuel technologies emerged.

Legislators let the ethanol subsidy die last month after failing to extend the break. which by some estimates, has cost the government $6 billion a year. (Annual Federal expenditure=$6 Billion/year for a 10% “dilution” added to each gallon of the average gas at your nearby gas station. Think what 85% cost.) The subsidy gave oil refiners 45 cents per gallon for ethanol blended gasoline. (The “support” was 45¢ a gallon for every gallon of ethanol-laced gasoline. I read that as 45¢ on every gallon of gas. YIPES! YOUR tax money. Only a few more BILLION $ every year for the past 30)

In 2011, flex-fuel vehicles accounted for about 14 percent of the industry’s U.S. retail sales, according to LMC Automotive, a research firm that tracks industry sales figures.

If the fuel economy credit is dropped, sales of E85-compatable vehicles could fall even further, to perhaps 10 percent of U,S. retail sales in 2016, LMC Automotive forecasts.

The lack of E85 fueling stations has been a major hurdle. Of the 160,000 gasoline pumps nationwide, 3,500 are for E85 fuel, according to the Renewable Fuels Association. a trade group for ethanol producers.

E85 compatible engines are more expensive to build, although automakers don’t typically charge more for them, said Omotoso, of LMC Automotive, who

specializes in powertrain forecasting. He estimates car companies spend $100 more per a vehicle to equip a car with the materials necessary to operate on an ethanol-heavy blend of gasoline.

“In the short term, the expiration of the subsidy won’t have an effect,” Omotoso said. But combined with the end of the fuel economy credit, he added: “We expect automakers to produce fewer flex-fuel vehicles.

Additional comments from Mr. Stoddard.

Think what it has cost us over the past 30 years:

For car manufacturers to comply/make engine fuel systems survive in NEW cars.

For guys like us that had their carburetors & F.I. repaired in zillions of OLD cars, tractors, mowers, etc. Ethanol kills the rubber seals in your fuel system.

For oil companies blending into their fuel AND into fuel distribution (gas stations) hardware/pumps/etc.)

For corn & crops & food cost factor--refining, storage & transportation of ethanol.

For the false/screwed up farm subsidy & farm greed mentality

For reduced gas mileage in all cars. (Ethanol has less energy per gallon, so you sub-consciously hold the gas pedal down further.)

Ditto all the above AGAIN when the Feds tried to mandate 15% ethanol (a super-failed fiasco during the past 2-3 years.)

I was sitting at the computer keyboard suffering from a severe case of writer’s block as to how to fill this month’s Editor’s Page. Looking out the window I saw the above. A small flock of vultures, actually crows, waiting patiently to swoop down to pounce on a wounded squirrel. It reminded me that we are entering perhaps the cruelest month of all in a northern Ohio winter. Once we get through February it is all downhill on the ride to Spring and better Porsche driving conditions. Although I did get the P-cars out into the interstate in early January, recent arrival of the white stuff in quantity means their hibernation now begins for real.

So now is the time to think about the future when the melt is permanent and the roads are washed clean of salt residue .

In this Voices issue Bob Palmer writes about his plans to visit the all Porsche parts swap meet in Hershey PA in April. It is sponsored by the Central PA Region PCA. He & Ava have been going there for several past meets and he says they always have a good time. The last time, he came home with a bargain deal on a Bell autocrossing helmet. They overnight in a Bombay no-tell motel complete with hot tub. They find really good places to eat that don’t cost a fortune. I’m thinking I’ll join them this year. Maybe I can fill a short list of needed 356, 914, & 993 parts. If not, I can still enjoy tromping through acres of

Porsche related junk. Will I need to bring my mud waders? I hope not.

The centerfold events calendar shows three 2012 NOR DE’s on tap. Good reasons for trips to Mid Ohio and Nelson Ledges. Beachwood Porsche has stepped up to sponsor the entire series, so I know there will be some neat Mark Taylor designed driving shirts to collect as souvenirs.

July will be a busy travel month for me. I want to keep my string alive, so I’ll be attending the Porsche Parade in Salt Lake City. Will I 993 drive? Probably not, SLC is a 1700 mile trip which translates to 3+ days on the road for me. Double that is just too much and since I have retired from autocrossing, I really don’t need a Porsche in UT. SW Air and Hertz will have to suffice. I’ll catch a rally Boxster ride with my NY friend, Sallie, take the tech quiz in a comfy chair, and in general enjoy the scenery

At July’s end I will be driving to P2O. As of 2012, the O stands for Ohio rather than Oxford. The venue will be moving to Granville OH which is slightly east of Columbus. This easily cuts 90 minutes off the trip of prior years. I’ve traveled to 5 of 6 past P2O’s, usually cycling through Porsches. This year it’s the 356.

I’m sure there will be more adventures as the year unfolds. Just like the tree buzzards, I’m ready to pounce.
