The Mission, the Messenger and the Message

We proposed, in the October HCT (page 2), toundertake a study of the letters between A. P. Sinnett, H. P.Blavatsky and Masters K. H. and M. between the years of1881 and 1884. This, we hoped, would lead to anunderstanding of the events that led to Sinnett’s failure as a“Lay Chela,” and “how the most popular and main-stem ofthe movement was led into psychism and distorted teachingsunder Annie Besant and C.W. Leadbeater.

After some preliminary study, the magnitude of ourtask for a proper understanding, seems much larger thanbefore. All journeys, however, begin with the first step.

Doctrine.

I - The Mission

Before we consider the injunction ofTsong-Kha-Pa, we shall first take a brieflook at the history of Buddhism in Tibet andTsong-Kha-Pa’s place in it.

Tibetan Buddhist History - Overview“Buddhism was introduced into Bod-

yul [Tibet, ed. HCT] in the beginning of theseventh century by a pious Chinese Princess,who had married a Tibetan King, who wasconverted by her from the Bön religion intoBuddhism, and had become since then apillar of the faith in Tibet, as Asoka had beennine centuries earlier in India.

“It was he who sent his minister ... ; hisown brother, the first Lama in the country --according to Tibetan historical records -- toIndia.

This brother minister [Marpa, thetranslator, Ed. HCT] returned “with the greatbody of truth contained in the Buddhistcanonical Scriptures, framed the Tibetanalphabet from the [Sanskrit] Devanagari ofIndia, and commenced the translation of thecanon from Sanskrit - it had previously beentranslated from Pali, the old language ofMagadha into Sanskrit - the language of thecountry.” [Blavatsky Collected WritingsVol. IV p.16]

“The `Dug-pa or Red Caps’ belong tothe old Ñyingma-pa sect, who resisted thereligious reform introduced by Tsong-Kha-

pa between the latter part of the fourteenthand the beginning of the fifteenth centuries.

It was only after a lama coming to themfrom Tibet in the tenth century had convertedthem from the old Buddhist faith - sostrongly mixed up with the Bön practices ofthe aborigines - into the Shammar sect, that,in opposition to the reformed ‘Gelukpas,’ theBhutanese set up a regular system ofreincarnations. It is not Buddha though, or‘Sang-gyas’ the Buddha who incarnateshimself in the Dharma Raja, but quiteanother personage.” [ibid. p. 9]

“The Regular System of the LamaicIncarnations of `Sang-gyas’ (or Buddha)began with Tsong-kha-pa. This reformer isnot the incarnation of one of the fiveCelestial Dhyanis, or heavenly Buddhas, asis generally supposed, said to have beencreated by Sakya Muni after he had risen toNirvana, but that of `Amita,’ one of theChinese names for Buddha.

“The records preserved in the Gompa(lamasery) of `Tashi-Lhunpo’ (spelt by theEnglish Teshu Lumbo) show that Sang-gyasincarnated himself in Tsong-Kha-pa inconsequence of the great degradation hisdoctrines had fallen into.” ...

“It was because, among many otherreforms, Tsong-Kha-pa forbade necro-mancy (which is practiced to this day withthe most disgusting rites, but the Böns - theaborigines of Tibet - with whom the RedCaps, or Shammars, had always fraternized),that the latter resisted his authority.

“This act was followed by a splitbetween the two sects. Separating entirelyfrom the Gelukpas, the Dugpas (Red Caps) -from the first in a great minority - settled invarious parts of Tibet, chiefly its border-lands, and principally in Nepal and Bhutan.”

The Injunction of Tsong-Kha-pa

“Among the commandments of Tsong-Kha-pa there is one that enjoins the Rahats(Arhats) to make an attempt to enlighten theworld, including the `white barbarians,’1

every century, at a certain specified period ofthe cycle.

“Up to the present day none of theseattempts has been very successful. Failurehas followed upon failure.”

II - The Messenger - H.P. Blavatsky

“After a century of fruitless search, ourchiefs had to avail themselves of the onlyopportunity to send out a European bodyupon European soil, to serve as a connectinglink between that country and our own.”

“One or two of us hoped that the worldhad so far advanced intellectually, if notintuitionally, that the Occult doctrine mightgain an intellectual acceptance, and the

impulse given for a new cycle of occultresearch.

“Others - wiser as it would now seem -held differently, but consent was given forthe trial. It was stipulated, however, that theexperiment should be made independently ofour personal management; that there shouldbe no abnormal interference by ourselves.

“So casting about we found in Americathe man3 to stand as leader - a man of greatmoral courage, unselfish, and having othergood qualities. He was far from being thebest, but (as Mr. Hume speaks in H.P.B.’scase) - he was the best one available.

“With him we associated a woman ofmost exceptional and wonderful endow-ments. Combined with them she had strongpersonal defects, but just as she was,, therewas no second to her living fit for this work.We sent her to America, brought themtogether - and the trial began.” [MLC p. 124-5]

A BANNER YEAR

When Rip van Winkle fell asleep for 20years, he missed a lot of news, including theAmerican Revolution.

He missed some important new science,too, such as the discoveries of oxygen and theplanet Uranus. But he would have missed alot more new science had he dozed through1994. ...

Lucy, loses oldest-ancestor crown.

“In September, anthropologistsreported the discovery of 17 fossilbones and teeth belonging to a speciesnamed Australopithecus ramidus.

“The 4.4 million year-old boneswere found in Ethiopia’s Afar region,not far from where the bones of Lucyhad been discovered in 1974.

“Lucy, age 3.2 million years,was of the species Australopithecusafarensis, the oldest non ape humanancestor. The new species appears tobe the root species for the humanfamily.”

Science is proceeding under the givenhypothesis that the species of man evolvedfrom the ape species at some point in thedistant past.

Theosophy teaches that man himself isthe central trunk of evolution, and that apeswere an offshoot from the human line:

“It is not denied that in thepreceding Round, man was a giganticapelike creature; and when we say`man’ we ought perhaps to say, therough mould that was developing forthe use of man in this Round only - themiddle, or the transition point, ofwhich we have hardly reached.

“Nor was man what he is nowduring the first two and a half Root-Races. That point he reached, as saidbefore, only 18,000,000 years ago,during the Secondary period, as weclaim.”[The Secret Doctrine, Vol II p. 261]

Scientists top off list of particles, sort of.

“In April, physicists at theFermilab atom smasher in Illinoisannounced that they might havediscovered the long-sought top quark,last of the six quark brothers. Alongwith their cousins, the leptons, quarksare the fundamental particles ofmatter - constituents of mesons,protons, neutrons and related par-ticles.

“The top search began after thefifth quark (named bottom) wasdiscovered in 1977. In particlecollisions at Fermilab, physiciststhink they’ve seen debris from the topquark.

“But they admit that there’s asmall chance - about the same as

drawing two aces in a row from thetop of a shuffled deck - that their topsuspects are flukes.”

Science may be coming closer torealizing that their search for the mostelementary quark will only lead to moreelementary particles. They may eventuallyrealize that they are looking at Laya Centers.

“A Laya Center is a `point ofdisappearance ‘ - which is theSanskrit meaning. Laya is from theSanskrit root li , meaning `to dis-solve,’ `to disintegrate,’ or `to vanishaway.’ A Laya Center is the mysticalpoint where a thing disappears fromone plane and passes onwards toreappear on another plane. [OccultGlossary, Purucker, p. 84]

“The mathematician, in order tocalculate geometrical figures, hadbeen obliged to divide them into aninfinite number of infinitely smallparts, and the physicist saw no limit tothe divisibility of matter into atoms.1

“The bulk through which exter-nal things seemed to fill space was aproperty which they acquired onlythrough the coarseness of our senses ...

“Leibnitz followed these argu-ments to some extent, but he could notrest content in assuming that matterwas composed of a finite number ofvery small parts. His mathematicalmind forced him to carry out theargument ad infinitum.

“And, what became of the atomsthen? They lost their extension andthey retained only their property ofresistance; they were the centers offorce. They were reduced tomathematical points. ... but if theirextension in space was nothing, somuch fuller was their inner life.

“Assuming that inner existence,such as that of the human mind, is anew dimension, not a geometrical buta metaphysical dimension ... havingreduced the geometrical extension ofthe atoms to nothing, Leibnitzendowed them with an infiniteextension in the direction of theirmetaphysical dimension.

“After having lost sight of themin the world of space, the mind has, asit were, to dive into a metaphysicalworld to find and grasp the realessence of what appears in spacemerely as a mathematical point.

“As a cone stands on its point, ora perpendicular straight line cuts ahorizontal plane only in one math-ematical point, but may extendinfinitely in height and depth, so theessences of things real have only apunctual existence in this physicalworld of space; but have an infinitedepth of inner life in the metaphysicalworld of thought.”[The Secret Doctrine I, p. 628]

The Universe lies about its age.

“In October, astronomers usingthe Hubble telescope reported newevidence that the universe is a lotyounger than theorists had thought.

“Measuring variable stars in thedistant galaxy M100 provided a wayto gauge how far away that galaxy is,which in turn allowed a new estimateof how fast the universe is expanding.

“The results suggest that insteadof 15 billion years old, the universemay be only 8 billion to 11 or 12billion years old.

“More measurement will beneeded to check this figure, of course,but it presents astronomers with aserious problem, since they calculatethat the oldest stars in the universe are13 billion to 16 billion years old, andit would take a really creative theoryto explain how stars could be olderthan the universe they live in.”

?? “It would take `a really creativetheory’ to explain how stars could be olderthan the Universe.”

Occultism teaches:

“Every star as well as every truecluster of stars transmits to us its ownparticular range of vibrational ener-gies.

“In fact, the stars, and to a lessextent the planets, are the builders of

the manifested universe - not merelyof the physical bodies which flowforth originally from the physicalbodies of the various celestialrunners, but more particularly arethey builders through the spiritual,intellectual, and psychical, as well asastral and vital, energies inherent inthem and rooted in the invisiblerealms of the universe.”[Fountain Source of Occultism, Pu-

rucker, p. 149]

Milky Way gets new neighbors.

“In another astronomical sur-prise, a radio telescope in Hollanddetected radio waves from a newspiral galaxy called Dwingeloo, abouta third the mass of the Milky Way,that has been out there all along.

“Nobody noticed it because thebulk of the Milky Way blocks theview from Earth.

“Earlier in the year astronomersdiscovered another new Milky Wayneighbor, a dwarf galaxy right nextdoor, a mere 70,000 light-years fromEarth.”

G. de Purucker observes:

“The extraordinary thing is thateven the scientists, if driven into acorner by probing questions, wouldthemselves acknowledge that thisphrase (empty space) merely signifiesportions of space or cosmical fields

which contain no `matter’ i.e. nophysical matter which they, with theirinstruments, can cognize or see.

“When we examine the limit-less expanse of boundless Spacearound us, as far as our vision and ourimagination can carry us, we seefields of apparent cosmic emptinesssprinkled throughout with glitteringstars, and with millions upon millionsof wisps of light that are nebulaewhich, under the resolving power ofthe telescope, are seen to beuniverses, themselves, of other starsand star clusters - or again, vastbodies of cosmic gas.

“However, they are not gas inany single instance; but this need notconcern us here except to remark thatmany, if not all, of these irresolvablenebulae belong to ranges of mattersuperior to the physical, which as yethave never been studied in thelaboratory.

“In other words, they arecomposed of ethereal matter of ahigher plane than our physical plane.”[Ibid., p. 65]

Future fashion: designer sperm.

“In November, University ofPennsylvania scientists reported amethod for removing stem cellsdestined to become sperm from miceand reimplanting them in sterile mice.The transplanted sperm actually

worked, enabling some of therecipient mice to father progeny withthe transplanted sperm.

“Combined with techniques formodifying genes, this method raisesthe future possibility of introducinggenetically modified sperm whosemodifications could be passed on tofuture generations. Experimentalgene therapies now used to treatdiseases affect only the individualtreated, not offspring.”

Race to discovery ends, researchcontinues on breast cancer gene.

“In September, researchers dis-closed they had finally found a widelysought gene linked to hereditarybreast cancer.

Defects in the gene, which iscalled BRCAI, are related to perhapshalf of hereditary breast cancers,which would amount to about 1 in 20of all breast cancer cases. The gene iscomplicated and subject to numerousmutations, so much more research isneeded to make the new knowledgeuseful for screening or treatmentpurposes.”

Too fat for your jeans? Blame genes.

“In December, scientists fromRockefeller University reported find-ing a gene responsible for obesity inmice. They also identified the humancounterpart of that gene.

“Apparently, defects in the genedisrupt the body’s signaling system,so the message that the stomach is fulldoesn’t get to the brain.”

In all three of the above cases, we notethat there is no consideration given to ethics,which is inherent in the metaphysicalapproach. In his first letter to A. O. Hume,Master K. H. points out:

“Will permit me to sketch foryou ... the difference between themodes of -- physical called exact --often out of mere politeness -- andmetaphysical sciences?

“The latter, as you know, beingincapable of verification before mixedaudiences, is classed ... with fictionsof poetry.

“The realistic science of fact, onthe other hand, is utterly prosaic.

“Now for us poor and unknownphilanthropists, no fact of either ofthese sciences is interesting except inthe degree of its potentiality of moralresults, and in the ratio of itsusefulness to mankind.

“And what, in its proud isola-tion, can be more utterly indifferent toevery one and everything, or morebound to nothing, but the selfishrequisites for its advancement thanthis materialistic and realistic science

of fact? ...

“Exact experimental Sciencehas nothing to do with morality,virtue, philanthropy, therefore canmake no claim upon our help, until itblends itself with the metaphysics.

“Being but a cold classificationof facts outside man, and existingbefore and after him, her domain ofusefulness ceases for us at the outerboundary of these facts; and whateverthe inferences and results for human-ity from the materials acquired by hermethods, she little cares. ... “[MLC pp. 471-2]

Violence in space: Jupiter gets blackeye.

“In July, Americans all becameastronomers, watching as a crumbledcomet named Shoemaker-Levy splat-tered the surface of the giant planetJupiter.

“One impact left such a darkgash that an astronomer compared itto a black eye. Jupiter seems to berecovering, though, as the darksplotches caused by the impacts havealready begun to fade.”

Fiction becomes fact as Hubble discov-ers that black holes are really something.

“Science fiction fans every-where rejoiced in May when the mostpopular of astronomical objects, theblack hole, was proved to be morethan a figment of Einstein’s imagina-tion.

“By determining the speed withwhich gas circled the core of a distantgalaxy, Hubble astronomers wereable to show conclusively that theobject there had to be so dense that itcould be nothing other than asupermassive black hole, 3 billiontimes as heavy as the sun.

“While black holes had becomewidely known in science fiction, theidea originated in studies of Einstein’stheory of general relativity.

Proof of their existence under-scores the remarkable ability of thehuman capacity to figure out fantasticthings using only paper, pencil andbrain.”

We are speculating that Black holes maybe evidence of the existence of a “pralaya.”

Black holes had not been discovered oreven postulated at the time of our greatteachers.

“When Brahman breathes forththe universe, it is the outflowing ofthe Great Breath which thereuponinstantly becomes Brahma; the kosmic

or (or cosmic) manvantara is the lifeterm of Brahma.

“When this life term ends, thenBrahma re-enters its own spiritualessence or Brahman, and all mani-fested space vanishes into abstract orpotential Space, and this is theindrawing of the Great Breath, or thebeginning of kosmic pralaya.” [Foun-tain Source of Occultism, p. 84]

“And the headlines of 1994underscore the remarkable capacitythat science retains for providingnewsworthy surprises.

“There will be more scienceheadlines in the years ahead, report-ing discoveries more intriguing thananything Rip van Winkle everdreamed of.”

Kalachakra Initiation

It was on Wednesday December 7th,barely two weeks after my back surgery,that David Reigle telephoned from hishome in Cotopaxi, Colorado, inviting me toattend and participate in the KalachakraInitiation being held at the mountain homeof Maggie Kress near Gardiner, Colorado.

He and Nancy Reigle, his wife, RobertHütwohl from Santa Fe and others would bethere. A high Lama, Jetsun Dampa, fromTibet and Mongolia and speaking onlyTibetan, would be in residence to offer theInitiation in English through his interpreter,a Tibetan Buddhist Nun.

It was an opportunity not to be missed,advice to the contrary notwithstanding, fromfriends and Doctor. Owing to scheduleconflicts, Marty was unable to go, so onFriday morning, armed with detailled routeinstructions, USGS Topographic maps, alower back support cushion from myChiropractor, and a sense of purpose, I set outalone on the 4 1/2 hour drive for Gardiner.

The Initiation involves accepting thevow and commitment to the practice ofstriving for enlightenment for the ultimateattainment of Bodhisattva-hood for theservice of humanity.

I am grateful to have been given theopportunity, and am glad I went. Followingbelow is some background information onthe event. D.S.

His Eminencethe Ninth Khalkha Jetsun Dampa

His Eminence the Ninth KhalkhaJetsun Dampa was born and educated inLhasa, Tibet. This prominent position wasfirst conferred by the Fifth Dalai Lama inthe 17th century. He studied at Rading andDrepung Monasteries.

As the head of the Yellow Hat (Gelug-pa) Sect of Buddhism in Mongolia, he wasknown as the Bogda - in their eyes theLiving Buddha.

Because of religious oppression by theCommunists in Mongolia, His Eminenceescaped into exile in India in 1959 and hisexistence was kept secret.

Because of recent political changeswith the collapse of the Soviet Union andgreater religious freedom in Mongolia, HisHoliness the Dalai Lama decided in 1991 tomake his position known.

His Eminence is recognized as thereincarnation of the great Tibetan historianand Tantric master Taranatha, whose workon the history of Buddhism and Tantra inIndia continues to be highly respected asbeing clear, authentic, and reliable to thepresent day.

In Tibet Khalkha Jetsun Dampa wasconsidered one of the most revered teachersof the Kalachakra Tantra.

Gaden jangtse dratsang monastery

Gaden Jangtse Dratsang monasterywas founded by Je Tsong-Kha-pa, LobsangDrakpa in the year 1409 near Lhasa, Tibet.Sixteen hundred monks lived there until theChinese invasion of 1959.

The military occupation and destruc-tion of Tibetan culture forced His Holinessthe Dalai Lama and 100,000 of hisfollowers to flee to India for politicalasylum.

By special request from His Holinessthe Dalai Lama to the government of India,all the monasteries first settled at Buxa; laterthey were re-established in south India.

The traditional culture of Tibet waslargely religious in nature, and fundamentalto the understanding of Tibet and its greatcivilization is a proper appreciation of itsreligion. It was not only the dominant forcein the life of the Tibetans but the very themeof their life.

[Prior to the Chinese invasion in1959], there were 3,700 large monasteriesin Tibet with a monk population of over200,000. The monasteries were the hub ofthe civilization.

One of the most important educationalcenters to be rebuilt in India is GadenJangtse Dratsang. When first started inMumdgod in 1969, it housed only 169

monks who had originally come from Tibet.

The other 1500 had either fallenvictim to the Chinese or to malnutrition andtropical disease. Eighty of these pioneermonks have died since 1969, and of thoseremaining the average age is over 60.

Over the years, the Lamas havebrought their 107 acres of jungle land undercultivation. Through hard work and withgreat difficulty, they have managed tocomplete a Tsokchen (prayer hall) capableof accommodating 300 people.

At present, Gaden Jangtse Dratsanghas more than 524 permanent monks inresidence - ranging from age 6 to 69.Approximately half are under age 20 and amajority of them are orphans, semi-orphansor from destutute families.

A large number of residents are fromNepal, Bhutan, Assam, Ladhak, Lahul andSipiti regions.

Gaden Jangtse Dratsang offers educa-tion from first standard up to the equivalentof a Ph.D. in Buddhist studies (the GesheLhamapa degree). English, Hindi, Math-ematics and General Education are alsostudies.

Many of our monks have been invitedto teach in Central schools, to translate andto go abroad as religious instructors. Allhave done very well.

SHENPEN CHOELINGHuerfano Valley, Colorado

Shenpen Choeling, a Buddhist medi-tation center in the Rocky Mountains ofSouthern Colorado, has been established bythe most Venerable Ganden Tri Rinpoche,master of Tibetan Buddhism.

Sixty acres of magnificent 8,500 foothigh mountain terrain, said to be similar toEastern Tibet, will function as a non-sectarian meditation center providing acommunity teaching facility and eventuallyretreat houses for practitioners of all faiths.

Those who sponsor a retreat housewill, with the permission of the center, beable to maintain a long term interest in itsuse.

The center will aid in the transmissionof Tibetan Buddhist teachings througheducational, artistic and scientific pursuitswhich will include a resident teaching lama,events, and publishing.

In phase one of the project, a 2,000square foot building [is planned] that willprovide for a meditation room, communityroom with kitchen, bathrooms, and 2bedrooms to house the resident teacher andvisiting teachers.

Time Offby Bo Lozoff

A popular American Buddhist medita-tion teacher recently asked the Dalai Lama aquestion which seems to be a favorite notionin our culture:

“Your Holiness, how do you feel aboutthe issue of needing to take time forourselves?

You know, our need to drop out of ourroles and just take time off, how do you feelabout that?”

The Dalai Lama turned to his translator,Tenzin Geyche, who explained it a little morein Tibetan, but he still couldn’t understand thequestion.

So the fellow rephrased it about fourdifferent times, and finally the Dalai Lama‘got it.’

He burst out laughing and said: “Buddhatime off? Bodhisattva time off?hahahahahaha.”

What a concept! Do we need time offfrom breathing? What would happen if wetake time off from breathing?

Every movement, every thought, everybreath we take is our only begotten Son ofGod, God’s expression into the world.

Why create separateness between “me

and the community,” or “me and life,” withexpressions like “I need time for myself,and I deserve it!” That just reinforces ourduality.

Sure we need to eat, relax, play with ourfamily -- but because it’s natural, not becausethere is any inherent conflict betweeenaltruism and self-care.

Besides, the only real rest from all ourroles and identities would be, as the monkFather Theophane would put it, “to throwaway our silly smiles, fall to our knees, clutchhis hand and whisper, `Father!’”

That’s a perfect description of a periodof daily spiritual practice: “I throw away mysilly smile” -- all my clever ideas, what I’mwearing, what I look like, who Bo Lozoff is,what I drive, how much money I earn, howmuch good I want to do in the world, what I’mgoing to say in this sermon... I throw away mysilly ideas, fall to my knees, clutch his handand whisper “Father.”

That’s the opportunity we all have totake a real break from the tediousness andweariness of our worldly lives. Nothing less istruly “time off.”

Plenty is a village-based developmentagency that has always worked at the villagelevel with village-scale technologies.

For the more than half of the world thatis not living in cities, the village is the nextbasic social unit after the family. Tradition-ally, villages encompass all the systemsneeded to support their members.

Our challenge has always been to developand/or enhance systems that will improve thelocal food production, economy, health andwell-being of the village community.

More recently we have realized that thisalso includes considerations for the health andwell-being of the local environment - air,water, soil, vegetation - and implications forthe environment of the whole planet andfuture generations. In other words, develop-ment cannot be conducted in a vacuum for thesimple reason that nothing exists in a vacuum.

This awareness has helped to spawn theconcept of the “eco-village” and thedevelopment of “eco-technologies” - onesthat protect and cleanup the environment andlimit consumption of natural resources towhat is sustainable.

This new Plenty Bulletin is dedicated toecovillages - the Ecovillage Training Centeron the Farm, a project in which Plenty is apartner; “Ecoville” in Russia, another projectwe’ve been involved in; a new eco-technology center in El Salvador and the

ongoing assistance for the Carib’s inDominica, a village-based indigenous people.

1994 has been a year of evolution andrevolution in Plenty, fitting for a twentiethanniversary. Plenty moved its headquartersback to our community in Tennessee.

Some of the highlights: The children ofsome of Plenty’s original volunteers arethemselves becoming volunteers, boldlyventuring forth to far-off lands, divingheadlong into unfamiliar cultures, returningwith articulate and impassioned reports oftheir discoveries.

We’ve gone back to Guatemala to beginpicking up where we left off with the Mayansat the end of 1980.

New projects have emerged:

o Ecovillage Training Center;o Community agriculture in Nepal;oWorking with urban Native Ameri-

cans in Northern California;o People’s diplomacy and soy educa-

tion in Cuba.o Indigenous Women’s Economic

Development Program Director, CatherineRunno, was elected Chairwoman of the newlyformed Fair Trade Federation which isuniting fair trade efforts in both hemispheres.

Meanwhile, work continues on long-standing projects in Native American territoryat Pine Ridge, South Dakota and RoundValley, California.

o The Soy Utilization Program is

progressing in Nicaragua, Jamaica, Dominica,Belize, Liberia and other countries.

o Establishing Plenty’s Belize Centerwaits only some additional funding.

o Kids to the Country keeps growing.

There are so many things we arethankful for we want to spend the rest of thisletter saying thank you.

In computer-speak Plenty is like a“virtual village,” only much more realbecause the threads of common experiencesand shared visions that bind the Plentycommunity together are so numerous and richthat when we move in unison we are powerfulwith influence beyond anything we cancompletely grasp. That is miraculous. That issomething to cherish and celebrate.

When great ideas appear in the fabric ofhistory, global change can be sudden andsimultaneous. We are at such an instantnow.One overriding force is the disastrous tiltwhich human population is taking towardextinction by virtue of exceeding, polluting, andwasting the natural resources needed for survival.

A countervailing megatrend is thegreening of the culture in response to theemerging sense of foreboding as these limitsare reached. Environmental education nowstarts in Kindergarten.

Increasingly, people are giving up verygood jobs in industry to take lesser-paidpositions, work as volunteers, or otherwiseseek out a healthier quality of life forthemselves and their children.

There are two separately emerging,vaguely utopian visions at play. The first ofthese places trust in experts, planners, andarchitects to manage nature and humanrelationships in a more responsible fashion.

The other is reflected by individuals whochoose to live in small villages where theyrelearn basic skills like food growing, house-building, and reading nature’s signposts, andwhere “community” means an extended familyof your best friends, rather than some obligatorylevel of organization among strangers.

Sharing each others’ discoveries is thepurpose of PLENTY’s ecovillage trainingprogram.

o In 1994 we developed the capabilityto provide live-in training in appropriatetechnologies for interested persons in formerSoviet bloc countries, the developing world,and those closer to home.

o A three day sustainable foresteconomics seminar in March featured notedmycologist Paul Stamets.

o A two day workshop in Augustfeatured strawbale building techniques witharchitect Howard Swizer.

o In October we offered an eight dayPermaculture design course with instructorsPeter Bane, Chuck Marsh, and Adam and SueTurtle.

Death of anAMERICAN THEOSOPHICAL HISTORIAN

The Theosophical historian WalterAdley Carrithers was born in Fresno,California on August 14th, 1924 and diedin the same city on or about August 21st.,1994. He died of heart failure and wasfound by the police three days after hisdeath.

Walter Carrithers will be bestremembered under the pen name of AdlaiE. Waterman as the author of the book,Obituary the “Hodgson Report” onMadame Blavatsky 1885-1960, whichwas published by the TheosophicalPublishing House in 1963 with a prefaceby N. Sri Ram.

The then President of the Theo-sophical Society called the book a“remarkable piece of work ... undertaken... with extreme thoroughness and care.”

His first publication was The Truthabout Madame Blavatsky published bothas a pamphlet and as a supplement to TheTheosophical Forum, April 1947, by theTheosophical Society then at Covina andnow at Pasadena, California.

This pamphlet was a rebuttal to theBlavatsky biography Priestess of theOccult (1946) by Gertrude MarvinWilliams.

His book Obituary led to intensivedebate with Victor Endersby the editor ofTheosophical Notes and, later, WalterCarrithers published several long articleson Tantra and Tibet in that journal.

He formed the Blavatsky Founda-tion to perpetuate public knowledge ofthe life and works of Helena PetrovnaBlavatsky. He issued regular Newslettersmainly dealing with attacks on MadameBlavatsky for the Foundation.

He became obsessed with thisdefence and neglected his health byworking night after night as one of theDefenders.

In some ways he carried this to suchan extreme that his friend Boris de Zirkoffwrote to advise that he should “take somerest, some sleep ... and place your mindsomewhere else than on those schemersand slanderers.”

On Tuesday 14th, November, 1989Dara Ekund, her husband Nicholas Weeksand I drove to Fresno to meet with Walter. Itwas a sad visit as he was quite ill.

Walter Carrither’s work continuesand his writings deserve close study. Hiscolleagues wish him well in his journeyinto the unknown.

Damage Minimalin Boulder Crash

Co-editor Marty Lyman was busilytyping text into WordPerfect for this issue,when the error message “Sector seek error onDrive C,” flashed on the screen! An hour ofinvestigation revealed that the computer wasuseless for anything more than a boat anchor.

A trip to the local computer hospitalconfirmed that the 240 Megabyte Hard Drivehad “crashed” and worse yet, all data thereonwas utterly lost and unretreivable. The Addressfiles, Kiva co-op spreadsheet and lots of otherdata was lost and will have to be re-invented.

By a stroke of serendipity, I had justfinished saving complete archives of HighCountry Back Issues on 3 1/2 Diskettes.

This local disaster occurred just as thecommitment had been made to upgrade to MS-Windows and WordPerfect 6.1 Windowsversion -- in order to make possible a furtherupgrade to a full-page flatbed scanner andaccompanying state-of-the-art Optical Char-acter Recognition software.

When all of this new technology is inplace and working we expect to be able toscan, digitize and convert to text, out-of-printtreasures like the issues of The CanadianTheosophist that we have which are too fragileto be Bound.

Meanwhile we are proceeding at halfspeed with a antiquated 40MB hard disk whilewe await warranty replacement Advice tofellow computer users: Back up all the harddrive data that you can’t afford to lose
