TWENTY DOLLAR BILLWhat can you do with twenty bucks in the day and age we live in? A half tank of gas, a meal for two or a few days at the gym.

The price of goods is going up, the dollar bill is shrinking, And what I spend my money on, has started me to thinking.

What can I spend my twenty on that would bring the most return? To put in a bank account, little interest it would earn.

I think I found its perfect use, each and every year. The Rebekah dues I use it for brings nothing but good cheer.

The hive, the moon, the seven stars, the lily and dove so pure the examples set by Miriam and Ruth forever will endure.

The peace, the love and hope I gain, the friendships strong and true, the golden links of Odd fellowship, its promises imbue.

Our love of God and country, the principles which never falter. Our fervent hope, and our earnest faith we lay upon the alter.

So you see this 20 dollar bill I give, brings no monetary gain, But it keeps life’s cup overflowing, because of the links of the golden chain.

The promise of fraternity will all our needs fulfilled. That is a very small price to pay each year, with a twenty dollar bill.

1918 ~ 2007 Dan was initiated in Lodge #39 at Mariposa, California, in 1985 and remained an active member of our Order. He became a Past Noble Grand in 1993 and served as a Grand Officer in the Grand Lodge of California. On January 1, 2002 Dan transferred to Jerome #129. He also joined the Rebekahs in 2002. Daniel A. Lazer was the Chief Patriarch of Colfax #20 from 2000 to 2006. In 2007, he was installed as Junior Warden when the Encampment was unified with the LEA. Dan was one of the members who signed the Encampment Charter for unification and has been the driving force behind Colfax #20 Unified Encampment. He set the meetings up in Burley or Twin Falls every other month so that Colfax #20 could gain two more members from the Burley area. He was also the District Deputy Grand Master of District #5 and Special Deputy for the Grand Lodge of Idaho. Dan’s main goal, as we saw it, was promoting all the branches of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and the chair that is vacant by his passing will be extra hard to fill. Dan will be missed by all branches of our Order and will be remembered as a kind and caring person who never met a stranger.

The Members of Jerome Lodge #129

Brother Daniel Abraham Lazer, 89, of Jerome #129, passed away at his home on Sunday, March 11, 2007. Interment was at the Jerome Cemetery with full military honors. Dan was born in Minneapolis, MN, on January 13, 1918. He joined the Unites States Army Air Corps and served in World War II. In 1946, he married Lola Estes Stout and together they raised two sons and two daughters.

Greetings from the GM and AP, What a great State we live in, it is Spring and so many flow-ers, trees and shrubs are blooming (sometimes in the snow). Odd Fellows and Rebekahs have made us feel so wel-come as we travel around and we appreciate this. New applications being read are encouraging and mem-bers where we have visited are enthusiastic. Membership in our entire Order is at an all time low and everyone needs to work to gain new members to Insure Our Orders Future. When we were visiting in Riggins, we picked up a lo-cal paper that had an article “Rebekahs - Who We Are!” The article explained the many things they do in the Order and the Riggins Community. We would en-courage Lodges who have local papers to follow Rig-gins lead and advertise their Lodge in the paper. Have a good spring!

I had my right knee joint replaced on the 28th of Janu-ary. Everything is doing very well. I don’t have the pain of bone on bone with every step any more. I enjoyed my visit to Boise for your Encampment and L.E.A. District meeting, it was delightful and educational. There was a lot things discussed and action will be taken for each item. The lunch served by the L.E.A. was very good and we always eat more than we need. They are all good cooks. I have a District Meeting for Colfax Unified Encamp-ment, Saturday, 21 April, at Burley. My next meeting will be at Idaho Falls for District #7 Encampment on 28 April. I know these meetings will be held before this paper reach-es you. But I want you to know that I am doing my duty to the best of my ability. I will be in Post Falls for a Encampment Meeting 11 May, 2007. Summer vacation will soon be with us, so take care till we meet again. DON’T FORGET THE ISLAND PARK FISH FRY 8-9-10 JUNE SEE YOU THERE !!!

It takes a little muscle,It takes a little grit,

A little true ambition with a little bit of wit; It’s not the biggest things that count

and make the biggest showit’s the little things that people do

That make this old world go.(Unknown)

Entertainment was presented by Donnie and Pat Marvin. They played and sang “I Know Who Holds Tomorrow”. It was very well done. There were a total of 40 members and guests in atten-dance.

Late fall and winter activities have kept members of Ruth Re-bekah Lodge #107 busy. Halloween and ‘Thanksgiving programs were enjoyed and plans made for the annual Christmas party for members and their families in December. Santa visited as usual and it was a fun night! Nominations and election of officers was held in November and December and members looked forward to a new year. New officers are: Noble grand—Nancy Howard; Vice Grand—Shirley Warren; Secretary—Naomi Ralls; Financial Secretary—Karen Rehn; Treasurer—Ray Warren. Other officers were appointed later. In January year end reports were completed and plans made to participate in Joint Installation rites with District 5 on January 20 in Jerome. Following the installation ceremony, Burley Lodge members presented a surprise ceremony honoring Shirley War-ren who was presented the Rebekah Merit Jewel. She has been an outstanding member in Ruth lodge, holding many offices, lo-cal and state, chaired numerous committees and completed many years of service as a Rebekah. Members completed plans to help the IOOF prepare and serve the annual Pancake breakfast in February. They later learned the breakfast had been a huge success, financially and otherwise. Many townspeople attended and praised the event. Plans were finalized for the visit March 8 of Assembly President Virginia Moberly and Grand Master Lee Moberly. On that night members and guests enjoyed a dinner at JB’s cafe, then adjourned to the IOOF hall in Burley for the meeting. a special ceremony honoring the State officers’ program with various bells rung to emphasize parts of the official program. A reception was held fol-lowing lodge with colorful decorations on the tea table and guest tables and with special refreshments. Another activity in March was the District Meeting of District 5 held March 10 in Jerome. It was an interesting and informative meeting with many new ideas given. Ruth lodge will host District 5 in 2008. Ruth lodge members are looking forward now to Spring ac-tivities. Special programs are planned for each meeting and it is hoped we can gain in membership.“Yà’ll come visit us, sometime, ya Hear? “

WEB SITE UPDATE Some of you may have noticed that the Rebekah web site had been off line. This was due to technical difficulties while changing hosting companies. We are once again online with a new web address:

www.RebekahsOfIdaho.org. The change to a different hosting company will give us the advantage of sub-domains without the extra charge. This means that each lodge can have its own web site within the main site:

Lee Moberly, Grand Master of Idaho, I.O.O.F., and Virginia Moberly, President of the Rebekah Assembly of Idaho were guests of honor at the Valentines Day meeting of the Melba Rebekah Lodge. Following the noon luncheon they spoke of the various special projects, which offered a great amount of special information, that are involved throughout the world. In keeping with the Moberly’s theme, the afternoon meet-ing a special program was presented. This entertainment included an exemplification of Odd Fellowship with a vo-cal trio, Betty Doser, Jelene Baird and Barbara Pettigrew. Their red, white and blue gowns, “The bicycle built for two” the honorees special music, colors and “bicycle” added to the ambience of the day. It was a pleasure to have 28 other special guests at the meeting with other lodges located in Parma, Caldwell, Pansy (which meets in Caldwell), Wilder, Nampa, Boise, Mountain Home, Payette, Cambridge, New Plymouth and Kooskia. The visitors, along with the Melba sisters were able to admire the new floor covering in the kitchen, a nice change after some 5O years. Also, more of the metal chairs in the dining room are more comfortable with the addition of six more chair pads. One of these days ALL of the dining room chairs will be more comfortable. All in all, the dinner, interesting meeting, and beautiful weather, made it a GREAT DAY.

The Idaho Odd Fellow Rebekah News -May 2007 - Page 6 HOPE’S DOOR Advocates Against Family Violence (AAFV) is a community organization founded specifically to implement services that meet the needs of domestic violence, family violence, and sexual assault victims. In order to serve those victims and to offer services to potential high risk families several programs have been established under the umbrella of AAFV. Hope’s Door, the most well known, and the first program started by AAFV was opened in the Home on the Hill in 2004. Since it was opened Hope’s Door has expanded to incorporate programs that are essential to the recovery of victims. Hope’s Door offers: 24 hour emergency shelter, crisis intervention, counseling, support groups, court advocacy, legal aid referrals, individual advocacy, transitional housing, case management, and specialized substance abuse related case management. Also, Hope’s Door offers a variety of classes that assist victims. Those classes include: parenting, life skills, adults abused as children, setting boundaries, safety planning, children’s support groups, self esteem, job skills, resume writing, and communication skills. All groups and classes are offered in both English and Spanish and are offered to persons staying at Hope’s Door and other community members free of charge. AAFV also, offers a full service Sexual Assault Response Team (SART). The SART team works with local hospitals, clinics, and law enforcement and offers one-on-one advocacy, and a 2 hour sexual assault hotline for victims of sexual assault. The advocates that work on the SART team respond to the scene, hospitals, clinics or wherever they are called to assist a victim of sexual assault. This again is a service offered to all of Canyon and Owyhee Counties free of charge. AAFV understands that children are an important key to ending family violence. In order to serve children and their families AAFV has started a Parent as Teachers (PAT) and Parent Information Resource Center (PIRC) program. These services are geared to the families of young children. PAT offers individual home visits and classes for parents to learn about the developmental progress of their children. PIRC sites have been established in the community to offer a location were parents can go to learn more about parenting, the development of their children and to obtain any other resource of which they may stand in need. In the last year of operation AAFV through Hope’s Door, the SART team, and PAT/PIRC; has served hundreds of families and individuals in our communities that have found themselves in need. Since opening our doors Hope’s Door has housed (combined number) women and (combined numbers) children. In 2006 alone Hope’s Door responded to 690 domestic violence crisis calls, and 40 rape crisis calls. The Parent Educators for the Parents as Teachers program visits approximately 70 children per month in their homes. In order to continue offering these exceptional programs and helping families we need your assistance. You can make a financial contribution by calling our office, going online to www.hopesdoor.org, or sending your contributions to P.O. Box 1496, Caldwell, Idaho 83606. AAFV thanks you for your support.

This spring we have seen a real effort in building membership from some of our lodges. Degree teams have been busy as we work to stabilize our memberships. April 14th found me in Cupertino at-tending the SGL training session for membership committees. This event was well attended by representatives from six jurisdictions. Many thanks to the Cupertino IOOF for the use of their facilities, hospitality, fellowship and a fine dinner to send us all down the road. This month we will begin using the “Train the Trainers” program to offer help to any lodge wishing to use it. This pro-gram will work for any unit in our Order. New membership packages are also available which include answers to about any question a new prospect would have as well as a member-ship application and information to leave with the candidate. Inviting new members into our lodges has never been easier. Let’s take advantage of all the new information and work to in-crease membership in every lodge. Think of the change in our meetings if we were to add just five new members to each lodge. We can mail these packages out if needed or copies can be picked up at the Grand Lodge office. Please feel free to contact me by phone (585-2733) or e-mail ([email protected]) for any infor-mation or to schedule a training session. Please put IOOF in the subject line of the e-mail and leave a message if you get an an-swering machine. Thanks for all your hard work.

Randall Wallace, Membership Chairman.

Membership Monthly

Jurisdictional Membership Workshop

Furthering the goals of SGM Rob Robbins’ membership plans were the aims of two trainers in Cupertino, Califor-nia last month. This program was established to “train the trainers” for membership recruitment. Don Lang and Paul Kramer, both past Grand Lodge Officers from California, were the trainers. Representatives from six jurisdictions at-tended the event, which was followed by a great meal pre-pared by members of Cupertino IOOF. People came from as far as Alberta as well as five states. Idaho will begin the program this month. Anyone interested in the schedule or wishing to set up a group meeting should contact Grand Secretary Kenny Averill at the Grand Lodge office (459-2091) or membership chairman Randall Wallace (585-2733 or [email protected]) for times. Our jurisdiction stands behind this program designed for all the Orders and is ready to help our local lodges. Let’s use it!

Community Partners Card

Before I forget: Several years ago the Albertson’s organization began to offer non-profit organizations a way to earn some money for their youth programs. To participate in this program, the I.O.O.F. and Rebekahs had to use a paper Albertson Community Partnership card each time they made a purchase at an Albertson’s store. This “paper” card has since been replaced with a “plastic” card called the Albertson’s “Preferred” card. The plastic “Preferred”card is much more durable than the paper card. When using the Albertson Community Partnership card you need to do one of the following: 1. Inspect the bottom of your recent cash register receipt. If the receipt has a notation on the bottom, then you are linked to the Community Partnership Card program. You do not need to do anything else. 2. If you are using the new plastic Albertson Community card and do not see a notation on the bottom of the cash register receipt, bring your old paper card and ask the cashier to “swipe” your paper Albertson Community Partnership card. You do not need to do anything else. 3. If you are using the paper Albertson Community card, but do not have a new plastic Albertson card, ask the cashier for an application form and fill it out. Once you receive the new card, ask the store cashier to “swipe” the Community Partners card. 4. If you do not have either the old paper Albertson Community card or the new preferred plastic card, ask the cashier for preferred application form and the Community Partners card application form. Fill out both application forms and indicate your “beneficiary” as Idaho Odd Fellows Rebekah News. By using the Albertson Community Card when we shop, we are all jointing together to help raise funds for the youth of the lodges.
