The observation pavilion is covered but dress for the weather. A hat, water, snacks and insect repellent are recommended.

When you arrive, introduce yourself to the official Hawk Watchers. They will provide you with instruc-tions on searching for flying raptors. When you spot a raptor (hopefully it will not be a jetliner or dragon-fly) call out and one of the official watchers will stand behind you and confirm your observation. When the officials are counting, do not talk, make noises or in-terrupt. If you are lucky, you will see thousands of broadwings pass over the park. Experience not nec-essary.

Background on the Corpus Christi Hawk Watch at Hazel Bazemore:

Raptor enthusiasts and birders have been watching hawks in migration at Corpus Christi andwestern Nueces County (including Hazel Bazemore County Park) since the mid-1970's.

The watches were originally conducted as individually-manned watches, staffed by whomevercould come, whenever they could come. Sometimes consecutive days were monitored; often itwas catch-as-catch-can according to availability of warm bodies.

In 1988, then-Texas Regional Editor John Economidy initiated the first 10-consecutive daycounts at Hawk Hill (aka Mockingbird Hill, aka that spot on the north side of the 17th tee ofthe Wood River County Club's golf course). John's counts officially put the site on theinternational map, as seasonal reports were then published in the Hawk Migration Studiesjournal, published by the Hawk Migration Association of North America (HMANA) twice a year.

Picket line stakeouts were also tried, to get a feel for the "corridor" of hawks during the fallmigration. As more volunteers became interested and willing to stake out suspected hotspotflyover sites, observers recorded hawks during both fall and spring migrations.

Fall is without a doubt the premiere migration period for this area, bringing a million or morehawks overhead during the fall season. Spring flights are more sporadic over the area, asweather patterns enable migrating raptors to spread out much farther on their trek back northto their nesting grounds.

Hawk Watch International (HWI) took notice of the massive flights of hawks being reported tothe international birding communities via the internet and journal articles published byHMANA.

In the fall of 1997, the first 90-consecutive day watch using paid observers was held at theHazel Bazemore County Park watch site by Hawk Watch International. HWI, joined by generous

October Stewardship Activities

For the month of October we will continue our vegeta-tion surveys at Scenic Canyon. Now that the weather is cooling off, we will resume our normal 8:30 a.m.

to 12:30 p.m. work times. This work does not require any specialized training and is a great opportunity for you to learn how to use a GPS unit, compass, and even help you identify local flora. You MUST bring plenty of water and dress appropriately as we will be traversing rough terrain and sometimes through dense brush. A backpack is always helpful for carrying supplies.

If you have any questions, please contact Wendy Leonard ([email protected]) or Jayne Neal (jayne.neal @sanantonio.gov); both Wendy and Jayne can be reached at 210.372.9124.

Below is the complete schedule of activities. Note: We have moved survey times back to 8:30 am and we will not survey on the 28th. Thursday, October 7, 14, 21: 8:30 a.m. -12:30 p.m. Vegetation Surveys, Scenic Canyon 19011 Scenic Loop Rd., Helotes, TX 78023

Gardening in the Shade with Texas Natives October 13, 6:30 - 7:30 p.m.Free classes sponsored by TriStone HomesForester Elementary School Cafeteria 10726 Rousseau, San Antonio

Having a shady yard can frustrate even the most experienced gardener. If you have an area where you can't even get grass to grow, then learn-

ing about some of our Texas native plants that do well in shady conditions might be the trick to turning your yard into a botanical delight! These plants are not only beau-tiful, but because they grow naturally in the San Anto-nio area, they are drought-tolerant and disease-resistant. This class will introduce you to shade-loving plants, their wildlife value, and some landscape design tips.
