It has been installed in the Technical Studies Workshop and has already been used by students. It will also be used by other faculties as they look to incorporate it in some of their learning tasks. We have also installed 7 Large LED Interactive Panels into classrooms to replace the older Interactive Whiteboards. Dear School Family, We have completed our first ever fortnight of online

learning in the history of Temple. I would like to really

thank all the staff and students for your hard work and

efforts over the last two weeks. It has been

challenging but I strongly believe it has been a very

worthwhile experience and one that will help to

improve the ongoing quality of teaching and learning.

We are now preparing for students returning, and

hope we have a very significant number return for

Monday, 11 May, which is the start of Week 3 and

have all students back onsite at Marion, Mile End and

Paralowie for the start of Week 4 on Monday, 18 May.

It has been so encouraging to see how well Australia

is doing, and especially South Australia in the fight

against Covid-19. I trust families are now feeling very

comfortable and confident about their children

returning to school. I am aware there are quite a

number of students who have really enjoyed working

at home on TCC Online. They have been organised

and completed significant amounts of work and would

probably like continuing to be able to work in this way.

There are however other students who have found the

Online style of learning difficult and have not been as

engaged as they should have been. These are all

worthwhile journeys to experience as they help us to

develop a better understanding of how we learn and

how we need to develop as a learner.

As the situation is improving daily in South Australia, I

am now encouraging as many students as possible to

return to school for the start of Week 3, Monday, May

11. All staff will be onsite and teaching from their class

spaces and we will also now return to the normal

timetable for the start of Week 3. Students onsite will

move to their usual classes for all lessons. Teachers

will still use the online materials and resources but will

also have the flexibility to begin face to face teaching.

From the start of Week 4, Monday, May 18, the

priority will be face to face teaching in all classes at all

Year Levels.

We really look forward to all students being onsite and

being able to enjoy normal school life. We are also

looking to begin extracurricular activities as soon as

possible as they are such an important part of the life

at Temple.

We have been very thankful for a recent $100k capital

grant from our State Government. This was used to

purchase a very high-quality Laser Cutter. It has been

installed in the Technical Studies Workshop and has

already been used by students. It will also be used by

other faculties as they look to incorporate it in some of

their learning tasks. We have also installed 7 Large

LED Interactive Panels into classrooms to replace the

older Interactive Whiteboards.

The student entrance is currently undergoing a major

renovation and as such will not be useable for the first

half of this term. Students will be able to use the Front

Entrance and the SSO Entrance when arriving in the

morning and leaving at the end of the day.

I have been sharing recently from Romans 5 and

would like to encourage you with these words from the

Apostle Paul.

“We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and

trials, for we know that they help us develop

endurance. 4 And endurance develops strength of

character, and character strengthens our confident

hope of salvation. 5 And this hope will not lead to

disappointment. For we know how dearly God loves

Online Learning Experience

From a Parent perspective

Thank you for all the effort you have put in to ensure a smooth

transition to online learning. I am sure the novelty will wear off, but I

have had an absolute blast working from home with the kids this

week! (Poor Mr Simpson was treated to a video of Charlise and I

doing Footloose dancing together for PE)

The time table changes were a genius move, as the extended recess

and shorter classes are really helping the kids to stay focussed. At our

end, everything is working perfectly and I have 2 happy children who

miss their friends, but are coping really well with schoolwork.

Lisa Natale, Parent

From Student’s perspective

Last term I began my online learning

experience. It was great to be able to interact

with the teachers and my friends in a new

way. I also enjoyed being able to stay home

and work at my own pace as well as the extra

-long recess breaks. However, I do miss

being able to socialise with my friends like I would at school. But I

understand that we need to stay home to prevent us from getting sick,

which will help to slow down the spread of COVID-19. I hope and pray

that everyone stays safe and had a great holiday break. And that

online learning goes well for everyone in Term 2.

Aeisha Kowald, Year 7 Student

If you had told me at the start of the year that

my Year 12 experience would consist of

online learning and not seeing my friends

every day – I wouldn’t have believed you or

even been open to the idea. I was

disappointed that the circumstances could

change my last year at Temple…...missing

those ‘last’ experiences, the opportunity to

continue to spend time and develop lifelong relationships with my

peers and let alone how it would affect my final grades. However, the

experience of doing online learning surprised me! It was difficult to

adjust to not having a teacher as well as not being surrounded by

school mates and at times quite isolating, but through social media, I

was able to connect and actually made me value my friendships

more. Studying at home also gave me the freedom to create my own

study habits that I might never have experienced while at school which

I know will help me to adapt to University life for next year. I will

always remember this experience.

Zak Collingwood, Year 12 Student

From a Staff perspective

Reflections of a teacher new to Online

Learning.

With the recent changes to everyday life due

to COVID-19 we’ve all had to make many

adjustments. One of those major

adjustments is that as a school community we shifted to Online

Learning in a matter of a week or so near the end of Term 1!

As a teacher I have been amazed at the willingness of students to

learn new online programs, to adapt to different ways of engaging with

each other and their teachers and to adapt to different ways of

learning. The students have shown patience, grace and understanding

to me, as a teacher, throughout the period of adjustment to Online

Learning.

As teachers we’re on a fast and steep learning curve as we learn to

Zoom, to use Loom amongst other programs, and further upskill in

Microsoft programs and SEQTA. We’ve also been busy learning the

best ways to assess students’ learning using online methods. We still

have lots to learn and reflect on as we go into Term 2 and there will be

opportunities in our classes to get feedback from students about what

is working well for them and what can be improved.

In the short time of online teaching I’ve been able to use SEQTA

forums to connect with students, used Zoom to have online meetings

with students, to update SEQTA with online lessons, to create

electronic test documents, to train in using Loom and to have some

wonderful collaboration and support from the ICT department at

school as well as support from teaching colleagues.

I’m very thankful for the support of parents both of their children’s

learning but also support for us as teachers. Your encouragement and

support means a lot and is very valued. I’m also incredibly thankful for

the Leadership team here at Mile End, so ably led by Mr Marcel

Rijken. The guidance and clear communication of Mr Rijken and the

leadership team to our whole school community has enabled us to

navigate these unprecedented times as best as possible. As staff we

have also been provided with many training opportunities and

encouraged to learn and share new Online teaching methods and this

has been incredibly valued.

Ms. Amanda Benger, Year 7 Coordinator

Congratulations to Old Scholars Ben Smit and Noelle

Smit (nee Gall)!

Having just been awarded a $350,000 research and

development grant to support an international expansion.

The company, Adelaide start-up Teamgage, which

develops software to improve workplace culture,

wellbeing and performance has also released a new

platform to support organisations that have transitioned to

remote working environments during the COVID-19 crisis.

The “ready to use” software has been developed to

measure and report, in real-time, how organisations are

performing in terms of communication with staff,

leadership support, collaboration and employee

engagement.

Ben, Teamgage Chief Executive, said the company would

invest the State Government grant in adapting its

technology for use in international markets and for major

clients dealing with large data sets. With this grant we can

explore further how to adapt our technology for global

companies, as well as those with more complicated

structures and working environments.”

Teamgage has worked with major organisations including

Santos, SA Water, Evolution Mining and the CSIRO.

Congratulations and well done Ben and Noelle!
