Fall Book Study Beginning in September
Starting this September, Mallory Brown invites you to meet her on Tuesday evenings at 6:00pm in the Asbury Room for a group book study of Richard J. Foster's Celebration of Discipline: The Path to Spiritual Growth. This book explores the classic spiritual disciplines that make for a
balanced spiritual life. Together, we will read this book and pull in key biblical passages that illuminate the different practices in which Foster writes. The study will be 8-12 weeks long. If you are interested, please let Mallory know. You will purchase the book yourself. It can be found on Amazon and other online platforms and perhaps even in the used book store in Shelby on Washington Street. For the study, all you need is a willingness to learn, the book, your Bible, a pen, and notebook. Snacks, coffee, and water will be provided.
A History Minute by Libby Putnam
When Judy Norwood,
husband Odell, and sons
Roy and Mike moved to
Kings Mountain from
Belmont in 1966, they
moved their church
membership from Park
Street Methodist to
Central. Rev. Howard Jordan was the minister at
that time and services were being held in the
fellowship hall while the present sanctuary was
under construction. Both Judy and Odell were soon
involved with the children and youth at
Central. Mary Kleeper started a play school where
Maude Harper (Patterson) and Judy worked. Judy
remembers the Hamilton boys, O'Kelly Smith, Paul
Hendricks, Carrie Dilling, and Julie Rhea being the
youngest child. Odell not only taught the Young
Adult Class, but he also worked with the youth and
on occasion was called on to preach when one of
the preachers was away. Judy was a member of the
church choir and was active in the United Methodist
Women. A special memory for her was when her
granddaughter, Nikki, was baptized by Rev. Bob
Little and he carried her down the aisle so everyone
could see her, a new tradition for our church. Judy
cherishes the love shown to her and her family by
our church family when Odell, who had touched so
many lives, passed in 1993. Judy acknowledges
that the church has grown a lot since her family first
became members in 1966 and she feels sure it will
continue to grow.
We have had many wonderful responses to our project of gathering the history of our church and our members. These responses will be shared in the History Minute each month, and can be seen in a notebook we are compiling.
CENTRALPRAYERPARTNERS
We covenant to pray daily for Central
United Methodist Church, our leaders, our
ministries and our witness. Together we will
seek the presence and power of God to
fashion and develop this church and our
very lives with a culture of discipleship, a
heart for missions, authentic relationships,
divine discernment, faithful proclamation,
passionate witnessing and anointed
leadership—that the kingdom of God, as
revealed through the person of Jesus
Christ and expressed through the witness
of the Holy Spirit, may grow and be made
manifest in our midst.

A Message from Mallory Brown...
This summer, I have had the privilege of having three different
guilds on various days throughout the week. Some are still going
on. However, the Little Ones Guild ended July 25. This guild, for
ages 3-5, occurred three consecutive Wednesdays in July.
During our time, I got to know two sweet 5-year-old boys and
one 4-year-old-girl. If you have not taken the time to get to know
the children at CUMC, you are missing out.
Each week, we met on the playground in the cool of the summer
morning and continued our day from there. Our playground is a
host to so much laughter, play, and community. It is truly a
sacred space. Thankfully, Mauney Memorial Library offers such
fantastic programs each Wednesday in which we participated.
After lunch, I told a Godly Play story to our group. These
sessions were my first opportunities to tell Godly Play stories
with the children at our church. Each story was a holy moment
for me and, I hope, for the children. The stories I told were:
Creation, the Parable of the Good Samaritan, and the Parable of the Sower. My three participants
asked the most intriguing questions regarding each story such as, “Why would someone be so
mean to the man on the road?” and “My favorite day is when God made sharks,” and “Why would
the sower plant seeds in the thorns?” Hearing children wonder aloud is something we all need to
bear witness to.
As VBS is only a few days away, I ask you to pray for our children, the ones involved in our church
and the ones in our community at large. Each night during VBS, I will tell four parables using the
Godly Play method of storytelling. I am excited for VBS but more excited to hear the questions and
wondering of our children. I learn most about faith from children. I invite you to learn from them as
well. Mallory Brown Children’s Minister & Christian Education
Little Ones Guild during story time.
