“We Care” Bags—Thanks So Much

Thanks to everyone who delivered “We Care”

bags to our shut-ins again this year. Our shut-in

members are all so appreciative of being remem-

bered by our church and look forward each June

to receiving the bags as well as catching up on

recent news about their church. Thanks also to

those members who donated money toward this

project. Without your support we could never

pack the bags as full as we do. God Bless you all

for making our work easier by always being will-

ing to help out with the deliveries.

Avalon and Judy

Thanks for the many prayers and visits during

my hospital stay and recovery. You have helped

me greatly.

Love to all,

Mickey Dotson

To all members of the church:

I wish to thank you for the prayers and all the

telephone calls this past year. I had been in 4

nursing homes and on Feb. 7th two of my doc-

tors rehearsed me and I had the choice of mov-

ing to Muskogee, OK with my daughter Bonnie

and son-in-law or be put in a local nursing home

for the rest of my living life. I had to say good-

bye to two daughters, a son, 12 grand children,

18 great grand children and my only brother.

We live in the country 8 miles from town.

Lots of animals and birds. There are 5 deer in

the field across the street. I have trouble walk-

ing. I have only 3 new doctors and spend my

time reading and working on scrapbooks. I have

gone to the hospital once for a test and have

wonderful care from 18 family members here

and doctors that care for my health!

I wish to thank everyone for phone calls and

delivery of plants and cards. I love my church.

Karen C. Crowe

Thanks again for the visits and special prayers.

My new address is: 3510 S. 55h Street E.

Muskogee, OK 74403-5203

To the Church Members,

Thank you so much for the wonderful goodie

bag of such good things to eat! It will last a long

time. Thanks again.

Sincerely,

Roberta Robinson

I have enjoyed the nice treat bag that you gave

me. Thank you for your prayers during my sur-

gery and for my recovery. I always enjoy your

visits.

Thank you so very much for your kindness,

Nursery Attendants Needed

Two Rivers is in need of Sunday morning Nursery

Attendants. The church office is taking applications

for this position. Please get the word out. In the mean

please contact the church office. Thank you.

Thank you so much for collecting all the Kleen-

ex, toilet paper, paper towels, soap, deodorant

Annual Summer Picnic/

S.T.E.A.M.’D Fair

Saturday, June 16, 2018 was a hot humid

day. There at Camp Milan under shade of the

old oak trees with a little breeze it was a nice

day. Church members were arriving along with

S.T.E.A.M.’D Camp children with their parents.

Many of the families were impressed that the

church owned Camp Milan and commented on

how nice the property was.

At 6 PM everyone was ready for dinner. Pas-

tor Robb McCoy was at the grills grilling those

delicious hamburgers and those big quarter

pound hot dogs. The church members had

brought some of the most delicious foods as

well.

As dinner was coming to a close the attrac-

tion was the S.T.E.A.M.’D Camp display in the

Great Hall of the Retreat Center. The Great

Hall was filled with tables of some of the finest

artwork and makings one could imagine. The S.T.E.A.M.’D Camp kids did a wonderful job.

As the evening continued there were a lot of kids at the volleyball court creating a lot of laughter and fun.

Many were also at the rocket field shooting off the rockets they made at camp. Looking up at the basketball

court there were also kids shooting baskets, along with kids at both swing sets, the monkey bars and slide.

We must not forget the wonderful music produced by Mark Swessinger and the S.T.E.A.M.’D Camp kids

in the Great Hall of the Retreat Center. They put on an amazing concert. Claudia Applegate was also there

again this year with her ice cream shop with the most delicious ice cream, toppings and cones.

As the sky darkened, Pastor Robb McCoy and Mark Swessinger were busy getting ready for the movie. It

was a wonderful time to see the many people of the church and S.T.E.A.M.’D Camp participants so en-

tranced with the movie. It was truly a good old-fashioned summertime picnic! Thanks to the 60 people who

came to the picnic, the Evangelism team and S.T.E.A.M.’D Camp for putting this event together.

2018 Annual Conference Report

The 2018 Illinois Great Rivers Annual Conference was held Thursday, June 7 through Saturday, June 9 at

the Peoria Civic Center. The theme this year was “Let’s Get Fired Up . . . Moving Forward.” The conference

was shorter than previous years with fewer legislative items and no all conference dinner.

The main focuses of the conference were that the United Methodist Church has to move forward and the

OCOK -- Our Conference, Our Kids.

Moving forward was exemplified by Bishop Beard’s sermon on Saturday morning titled, “Forward

March.” In a year when we should be celebration the 50th anniversary of the formation of the United Meth-

odist Church, we could be facing the extinguishing of its flame. The bishop’s message was that the United

Methodist Church is too valuable in today’s world to allow itself to be torn apart. Next February in St. Louis,

a special General Conference will be held to attempt to find a way forward. The council of bishops has en-

dorsed one of the three plans to be presented to that conference. The plan the bishops endorsed is called

The One Church Plan. Complete details about the plan will be released as soon as it has been translated into

the six official languages of the church, hopefully in the next month or two.

The other focus was Our Conference, Our Kids. We learned about the way trauma affects the brains of

children who find themselves in need of the social services provided by the five agencies which will be fund-

ed by OCOK. The Lord works in strange and mysterious ways. I am sure that none of the speakers imagined

when they began preparing to speak to conference that the information they were imparting would have im-

minent relevance to a political situation, but that was acknowledged by more than one speaker. Over and

over the various speakers told about what happens to a child’s brain when it is stressed and how those effects

can be lifelong. They were speaking about how their agencies work to overcome and minimize that trauma

and ask for support of the conference for the OCOK special. The agencies served by OCOK are The Baby

Fold, Chaddock, Cunningham Children’s Home, Lessie Bates Davis Neighborhood House and Spero Family

Services (formerly the United Methodist Children’s Home).

In a small bit of irony, the most contentious legislative item on the agenda for the conference had, to my

way of thinking, the most innocuous title: Commitment to Creation Care. By a vote of 397 to 383 it was

passed encouraging all congregations to conduct an energy audit of their buildings and to form a Green

Team to “plan and monitor creation care improvements within their congregation.”

As always the ordination service was moving and I left the conference with renewed hope for the future of

our denomination in general and the United Methodist Churches of the Illinois Great Rivers Conference.
