Cohenrecently issued the following state-ment on labor negotiations betweenthe United States Maritime Allianceand the International LongshoremenʼsAssociation:“I am extremely pleased to announcethat the parties have reached a tenta-tive agreement for a comprehensivesuccessor Master Agreement. Thetentative agreement is subject to theratification procedures of both partiesand, as well, to agreements beingachieved in a number of local unionnegotiations. Those local negotiationsare ongoing and will continue withoutinterruption to any port operation. Outof respect for the partiesʼ ratificationprocessed, and consistent with theAgencyʼs long-standing confidentialitypolicy, we will not disclose any detailsconcerning the substantive provisionsthat have been reached.”“I know ILA members will be satisfiedwith the results of our negotiatingefforts thus far,” said ILA PresidentHarold Daggett. “Although the twosides cannot release complete detailsof this still unfinished contract, I canassure my membership that the pro-tections for our jurisdiction andincreased benefits and wages wereachieved.

Standing strong by Sherwoodwas their Engineered Lumber Products (ELP) partnersGeorgia-Pacific and Boozer Beam, who both displayedtheir latest offerings.The storm shortened the show by an entire day, but thecrowd was energized and eager to make the most out oftheir time. “We had one of the busiest booths on theshow floor, and felt like we were very successful in rais-ing awareness for the engineered line,” said DavidGaudreau, Vice President of Sales forSherwood. “It was great having GPand Boozer by our side to really showoff these great products.”This was Sherwood Lumberʼs firsttime exhibiting alongside Georgia-Pacific since northeast distribution oftheir ELP line began in July, 2012.With the full line on the roster includ-ing GP LAM® LVL, WOOD I BEAMTM

TheNational Association of HomeBuilders and the National Kitchen &Bath Association (NKBA) announcedan agreement to co-locate theInternational Buildersʼ Show and theKitchen & Bath Industry Show (KBIS)in Las Vegas beginning in February2014.The two events will remain separateand distinct shows held simultaneous-ly at the Las Vegas ConventionCenter through 2016, creating Designand Construction Week, one of theworldʼs largest gatherings focused onnew ideas, products and technologiesto design, build and remodel homes. “This new format allows exhibitors toreach a full range of design and con-struction professionals who buy, spec-ify and influence the products that go

Regardless of the final outcome fromthis Committee, American ForestResource Council (AFRC) said havinga review of NEPA and the problemsthat are resulting from its implementa-tion would be a good endeavor.Currently taking about 70 percent ofthe Forest Serviceʼs land manage-ment budget to comply with planningand environmental review for projects,AFRC said it leaves only 30 percentfor implementation and work on theground.

A recent report by the NationalOceanic and AtmosphericAdministration provided evidence that2012 was the warmest year on recordin the U.S. According to sources wild-fires burned over 9 million acres in2012 with a suppression price tag ofalmost $2 billion.The National Fire ProtectionAssociation Journal recently reported,“The federal government will soonannounce its 2013 budget for wildfiremanagement activities, and there isno reason to think that the price tagwill be any less than it was last year.One of the problems associated withthis very large number is that itʼs ofteninterpreted as the ʻcostʼ of wildfire,when in fact itʼs more like the tip of theiceberg of what wildfire actually costs.Focusing solely on suppression costscan blind us to a long list of additionaldirect, indirect and associated costs,including timber and agricultural loss-es, evacuation aid to displaced resi-dents, long-term rehabilitation costs towatersheds and other affectedimpacts from smoke and in somecases, the tragic loss of human life.”In addition to the huge losses of tim-ber, watershed, wildlife and other val-ues on national forest lands, there areat least six grazing permittees and 38
