n the occasion of International Women's

ODay, the NSS team of Social Welfare Cell,

JIET organized a one day workshop on ‟Self

Defence Techniques” at JIET Conference Hall on 8th

March 2017 to enlighten the audience about the

techniques of self defence that ensure their safety

during piquant situations. The idea behind the

program was to generate awareness among girls and

female faculty members of the college about various

laws, women rights and emergency self-defence

techniques. A team of 7 members from “Girly Fence”

(An organization) and more than 50 girl students and

faculty members were present during the program.

The team was led by Mr. Pradeep Deora (National and

International Black Belt holder in Karate and Tycoon

and also a professional trainer of Self Defence and

Martial Arts). The program started with the interactive

session by black belt holder Ms. Suman on “Be Bold

for Change” (“Don't be a victim, be an opponent”, “Help

yourself instead of waiting to be helped”).

The black belt holder Ms. Mamta enlightened about

how common sense can be used as a powerful

weapon against the miscreant and how it helps one to

come out of potentially dangerous circumstances. She

also shared information about the handy tools one can

convert into powerful weapons for one's protection

and safety. The demonstration of how to use body

parts as weapons when one is attacked was well

understood by the students.

Ms. Nirma gave self-defence training to all the

participants and threw light on how one should react in

different situations.

Each female faculty and staff member was welcomed

in the morning with a tilak and a chocolate. The

program was coordinated by Ms. Neetu Dabi (NSS

Coordinator-JIET) and student of II Year, Civil

Engineering branch, Saurabh Vyas coordinated the

entire event for he is one of the volunteers of the group,

“Girly Fence”.

supervision of Prof. O.P. Vyas (Dean (Engg.), JIET and Head –PSD Cell) and Mr. Manish Bafna (Asst.

Dean, JIET) from 15th March to 18th March during Resonance 2017 for all the students of Engineering and

Management at JIET Group of Institutions. A value added initiative, Virtual Campus Drive provided a golden

opportunity to the students to understand the intricacies and gain first-hand experience of the corporate world

and their placement procedures. It included online test, pre-placement talk, group discussion, technical and HR

interview.

The event gave a platform to the students of all the Years of Engineering of JIET, JIETCOE and Management to

get acquainted with the process of placement and on-campus drives. There were 23 virtual companies and a

total of 302 students participated in the event. A total of 56 students were selected in the placement drives of

various virtual companies. Students got an exposure to interact with industry experts and alumni during the

personal interview round. The venue for the event was JIETCOE.

Name of the Project : “Study on Canal Falls”

Names of the Students : Neha Purohit (Final Year, Civil Engineering, JIET)

Canal Fall Irrigation canals are designed for a prescribed bed slope so that velocity

becomes non-silting or nor scouring. But if the ground topography is such that in order

to maintain the canal the designed slope, indefinite filling from falling ground level is to

be made. If the difference in slope is smaller, single fall can be constructed. If it is of

higher then falls are constructed at regular intervals. Location of canal falls depends on- (1) topography

of canal (2) economy of excavation or filling.

Canal falls are provided in irrigation schemes to maintain a certain required drop in canal level through

virtually the whole range of operating discharges.

This seminar deals with the study of such vertical drop occurring in the canal.

The seminar suggests the best way in which canal fall are actually designed and give an idea about:

Ÿ Type of canal falls

Ÿ Necessity of canal fall

Ÿ Location of canal fall

Ÿ Design consideration of various canal falls.

Ÿ Examples showing design calculation.

In the case of a regulated fall, it also serves to obtain command at specific points along a canal, where the

water surface has to be raised to enable an off taking main or branch canal to be supplied. In both cases,

a drop in water level is artificially created which results in the conversion of potential head to kinetic head.

This head must be dissipated within the boundaries of the structure or it will destroy the downstream

channel by erosion, thus endangering the safety of the structure.

Title of the Project: “Multipurpose Industrial Robotic Arm”

Industrialization and globalization lead to increase in production rates in industries and as a result the

concept of automation is being introduced in the industries. The robots fulfil this requirement of the rapid

automation with increase in accuracy and reduction in the idle time. The idea of robotic arm is inspired by

the same concept and aspires to provide a helping

hand in the day to day production work and other

services by reducing the human intervention and

uniform quality. The industrial robot of today may not

be the least bit like a human being although all the

research is directed to provide more and more

anthropomorphic and humanlike features and super-

human capabilities in these. One type of robot

commonly used in industry is a robotic manipulator or

simply a mechanical arm. It is an open or closed

kinematic chain of rigid links interconnected by movable joints. In some configurations, links can be

considered to correspond to human anatomy as waist, upper arm and forearm with joint at shoulder and

elbow. Our vision is to develop an open kinematic chain and a flexible robotic arm which is going to be

used in welding, painting and pick and place purpose.

Topic of the Seminar: “Shape Memory Alloys.”

Guide Name : Mr. Ravi Shankar Padwa (Asst. Prof. (Sr.), ME)

Names of the Student : Himanshu Pandey (Final Year, ME , JIET)

With advancement in the Material Science that led to the introduction of Smart Materials

which are designed in such a way that their properties will change in response to the

environment. The Shape Memory Alloys (SMA's) belong to a class of shape memory

materials (SMMs), which have the ability to 'memorize' or retain their previous form when

subjected to certain stimulus such as thermo- mechanical or magnetic variations. They

are the material which exhibit two unique properties, the pseudo elasticity, and the

shape memory effect. The fundamental to the Shape memory effect is occurrence of a martensitic phase

transformation and its subsequent reversal. Basically, a shape memory alloy (SMA) is deformed in the

martensitic condition (martensite), and the shape recovery occurs during heating when the specimen

undergoes a reverse transformation of the martensite to its parent phase. This is the essence of the

shape memory effect. Materials that exhibit shape memory behaviour also show a two-way shape

memory, as well as a phenomenon called super elasticity. Basically they act as a compact actuators in

their application wherever needed. The Nickel-Titanium alloys (NiTi-NOLs) is the most widely used shape

memory alloy for the development smart textile and clothing like fire-fighter suits, self-ironing clothes,

antiballistic jackets, animated kinetic clothes etc. The shape memory alloys also have a wide application

in medical like dental braces, engines, coupling, engines, aerospace and robotics. Recently, many

researchers have taken an experimental approach to enhance the attributes of SMAs, by improving the

material compositions (quantifying the SMA phase transition temperature to achieve a wider operating

temperature range, and better material stability, as well as to improve the material response and stroke

with better mechanical design (or approach), controller systems and fabrication processes. The

challenges in designing SMA applications are to overcome their limitations, which include a relatively

small usable strain, low actuation frequency, low controllability, low accuracy and low energy efficiency

The purpose of this seminar to study and research about the Shape memory alloys due to their

significant interest and attention in recent years in wide range of commercial applications due to their

unique and superior properties.
