VOL 44 ISSUE 10 OCTOBER 2016 Dear friends, When I was a church planter in Richmond, Virginia, we used to remind our- selves that “the fruit of the apple tree is not apples, but more apple trees!” Now, our son Rusty, who took over as lead pastor at WFC - Winona Friends Church, where Marilee and I pastored for 16 years, is leading that church in its sec- ond church birthing Previously, on July 12, 2015, Rusty and WFC birthed their first cross-cultural church in Louisville, Kentucky. Rusty has worked with a group of Burundi, African-Americans to connect them with EFC-ER (our denomination) in the planting of this church. This group of about 30 Burundian Christian refugees here in America had been part of Friends’ Churches in Burundi before they had to escape the country due to violence and genocide. That church is growing success- fully (they had 70 in a service recently!), even though it has a long ways to go yet. Now, on Sunday, October 9, 2016, Rusty and WFC will again help birth a new Burundi-American church - this time in Atlanta, Georgia. There is a core group of about 25 in this church plant, and it has some excellent leadership. One attended our Friends’ Bible College in Burundi and already has pastoral experience. Rusty and WFC are committed to helping them get established and mature as a church. I challenge us as WFC’s sister church, to join in supporting this kickoff on October 9 in Atlanta. Let’s commit to PRAY for this exciting venture. And let’s celebrate their birthing in our worship service here at TFC on that day. Dear friends,

When I was a church planter in Richmond, Virginia, we used to remind our-selves that “the fruit of the apple tree is not apples, but more apple trees!”

Now, our son Rusty, who took over as lead pastor at WFC - Winona Friends Church, where Marilee and I pastored for 16 years, is leading that church in its sec-ond church birthing Previously, on July 12, 2015, Rusty and WFC birthed their first cross-cultural church in Louisville, Kentucky. It should come as no surprise that an adversary fit to be called the "god of this world" and the "power of darkness" is a force to be reckoned with. And so he is. In The Great Deceiver explore a being so diabolical he will stop at nothing to separate us from God.

Hosted by Pastor Michael Newman (Death ... Then What?), this four-session Men's NetWork Bible study examines the most perverse character in Scripture: Satan. "Beast," "accuser" and "evil one," this "roaring lion" as the apostle Peter calls him, is adept at changing his appearance and cunning in his deceit. Popular culture may portray the devil as a cartoon character in a red jumpsuit, as need-ing our sympathy, or has having gone down to Georgia, but those characteriza-tions only muddy the waters.

Join us for a four week study of our adversary Satan, in the Fireside room Wednesdays' at 7pm as we uncover some of the tricks of The Great Deceiver.

New Mitten Tree Director- Kathy Bolenbaugh has so faithfully manned the Mitten Tree Ministry single handed for years. She has done such a wonderful job! (Thank you, Kathy!) We are going to miss her. But she will be handing the reigns over to Karen Ladd, who is stepping up to fill that ministry need. (Thank you, Karen!) Watch for the tree to go up in November!

Arun & Shobha Massey Serving India

Why We Are Here In southern India, many poor people at the bottom of the Hindu religious caste system live in dread of a goddess called Yellamma. One of the ways they try to appease her is to dedicate their daughters to her service as temple prostitutes — devadasis. A girl, usually about 13 or 14 years old, is brought to the temple and ceremonially married to the god-dess’s idol. Forbidden to marry anyone else, she is now a devadasi. A wealthy man can pay extra for the right to deflower her, and afterward she becomes public property, duty-bound to satisfy the lust of any man who pays. With no social security system, she will likely dedicate any children she has into temple prostitution to support her in her old age, creating a cycle that can last for generations.

How it all started People thought Arun and Shobha Massey were crazy when they left their jobs, but the Lord had given them a mission. They had been moved by a documentary on the plight of elderly devadasis. Shobha remembered seeing temple prostitutes come to her door begging for food when she was a child. The way the devadasis lived without hope for this life or the next affected her deeply. As Arun and Shobha prayed over the situation, they saw a newspaper report about how the Indian government had failed in all its attempts to bring women out of the devadasi system. Where the government failed, Shobha knew God would succeed. Confident God was calling them to do something, Arun and Shobha quit good jobs and started Caring Hands. They didn’t have any financial support but they did have faith in God’s promises. The ministry grew and now cares for over 3,000 women and children

IN CASE OF SEVERE WEATHER In the event that severe weather should threaten while our church facilities are occupied, the following locations have been determined to be our safest areas: First, the downstairs hallway of the education wing on the northeast end of the building. When this area is filled, use the east first floor classrooms. Next, the north-south pre-school hallway of the Family Life Center may be used, along with the rest-rooms and locker rooms. As a last resort, the Youth Room (original sanctuary) may be used. No one should remain in the sanctuary, gymnasium, Fireside Room, kitchen or lobbies. When it is necessary to cancel services or activities because of dangerous weather or to communicate other unforeseen circumstances, we make every effort to have announcements made on the phone system, facebook and website as well as the following stations: WBCL 88.1. & 90.3, and 21Alive. In addition, we have church wide text alerts. Our TFCText List is the Over-All Congregational Group to which general texts alerts will be sent, such as cancelations of services. To sign up for these cell phone text alerts now, go to http://www.txm4.com/join/invite.cfm?i=196&cd=7973 . Or from your cell phone, send a text mes-sage to (419)930-1303.
