VOLUME 5 ISSUE 2 2ND QUARTER 2005 From Pam Shriver Aces abound in Summer 2005 on and off court for the USTA Tennis & Education Foundation! In this issue of our newsletter you will read about the “Avenue of Aces,” “Aces for Kids,” and “American Express Aces”—all of which help us promote our mission of “building lives through tennis and education.” “Avenue of Aces,” the donor recognition project at the USTA’s National Tennis Center, paves the way for growing the game in communities across the U.S. When you’re at the Open, please walk toward the East Gate (outside of Louis Armstrong Stadium) and visit the Avenue, and, since this is an ongoing initiative, I encourage you to take your place in tennis history by placing a paver order. Pavers ordered between now and next June 30 will be in place in time for the 2006 US Open. A growing number of community tennis programs are following the Foundation’s “Aces for Kids” model, and kids are reaping the benefits of combining tennis, healthy lifestyles and academic achievement. I’m delighted that in May our Proposal Review Committee awarded 24 grants, bringing to 100 the total number of grants given by the USTA T&EF. Many thanks to American Express which has launched its Summer of ACES Program where, for every ace served during match play on stadium court at each tournament throughout the US Open Series and US Open, it will donate funds to our Aces for Kids” initiative. Finally, my personal thanks to our own “Aces,” the Foundation Board members who have played at the top of their game to promote the healthy combination of kids, tennis and education— “Avenue of Aces”: Fred Shen, Missie Rennie, Howard Cowan and Anne Marie Davis; College Scholarship Committee: Barbara Wynne, Anne Marie Davis, Gary Davis, David Dinkins, Dick Phelps, Tiina Smith and Rosalind Walter; Proposal Review Committee: Larry Rand, Gary Davis, Judy Levering, Elizabeth Mathieu, Missie Rennie and Mary Wilson. From the Desk ofKaren Martin-Eliezer

This issue of our newsletter highlights our 2005College Scholarships, Spring Grants and the “Avenueof Aces”—a cycle in the life of the USTA Tennis &Education Foundation.

“Avenue of Aces,” our donor recognition project atthe USTA’s National Tennis Center, has been morethan two years in the making, and we are delightedthat the first round of pavers will be in place at thisyear’s US Open. The Foundation has benefited from

the leadership of several members of its Board of Directors—Fred Shen andMissie Rennie led the project with the assistance of Howard Cowan and AnneMarie Davis, as well as the expertise of the Los Angeles-based graphic designcompany, Studio Wilks. Anne Marie’s late husband, Dwight F. Davis III,was instrumental in getting this initiative off the ground, and I appreciate thestick-to-itiveness of the Board in pursuing the “Avenue.” We look forward towelcoming more donors at the US Open—and remember, the opportunityto personalize a paver for yourself, for family members or for friends is ongoing.Visit our booth at the Open located near the Louis Armstrong Stadium andstake your place in tennis history at the home of our country’s premier tennisevent featuring some of the greatest athletes in all of sports.

Mid-year is always an exciting time for the Foundation as we disburse grantsand scholarships and help many high school seniors realize their dream of acollege education. In May 2005, 75 college-bound students received scholar-ships ranging from $500 to $10,000 provided by the Foundation and theMassMutual Financial Group. The selection process was challenging because thenumber of applications increased from just over 100 in past years to over 600.The students selected by our Scholarship Committee are outstanding, and wefeel certain that they will represent themselves, their families and the Foundationwell as they enter this new phase in their lives. Remember, they all play tennisand are part of our effort to help grow the game!

Simultaneously, the Spring Grant Review process awarded funds to 24 programs—the largest number in a single grant cyclein the Foundation’s history. How gratifying toknow that because of your generosity, wewere able to disburse approximately$800,000 in grants and college scholar-ships in a mid-year funding cycle—thelargest amount in the history of theFoundation.

We are also delighted that AmericanExpress and HipGrips have recentlyjoined our growing cadre of corporatesupporters. They have been incrediblysupportive of our mission of “building livesthrough tennis and education.”
