We must set aside our selfish desires and take up our cross each day to help build up the Kingdom of God. This involves sacrifice. Rather than conforming to what is popular in our present age, we must strive to do what is good and pleasing to the Lord each day. The first reading tells of the inner struggles Jeremiah experienced in being faithful to Gods call to serve as a prophet. The second reading exhorts us to lead lives that are holy and pleasing to God. In the Gospel, Jesus teaches that all who desire to live as one of His disciples must take up their cross and follow Him.
