The June meeting was both interesting and well attended. A total of 77 people came to see and hear Dr. Walter Breckenridge, author of the classic work on the reptiles and amphibians of Minnesota. As always, he was entertaining and informative. His movie on the ecology of an island in the Mississippi River was enjoyed again by those of who 11ad seen it before, and enjoyed also by those who had not. We also gave him a bad case of writer's cramp from autographing his book. A . special MHS thanks to Dr. Breckenridge for his super program!

MHS Picnic

The annual MHS Picnic will beheld on Sunday August 17 at the Lions Park in Plymouth. Please see the map later in this issue of the Newsletter. Fred and Liz Bosman, along with Fran Frisch are heading this up. The Board has voted to buy 2 large turkeys (to go along with all the turkeys who will attend) to be barbecued. We need volunteers! Call the Bosmans or Fran if you want to help. 8 AM is the traditional champagne breakfast, and the picnic proper will start at 11 AM. This is always a great event, so don't miss out!

Midwestern Herpetological Seminar

The Second Annual Midwestern Herp Seminar will be held in 'Milwaukee this fall. The dates are October 18 and 19. If you are interested in learning more about the Wisconsin Herp Society, check out their newsletters in our library. MHS has a special deal to go along with this seminar. We have decided to hold a raffle for a free registration and 1 night's lodging. Tickets will be a mere $1.00 and you can but as many as you want. What a deal! We'll have more on this at the July meeting.

MHS Banquet

MHS will be holding a Christmas banquet this year. We would like to make this an annual event. It will be held on Saturday evening December 6. We'll have more on this soon.

This is from Tipster, the newsletter for Turn In Poachers. Thanks to Ted Schave!

A taste for frog legs turned out to be an expensive proposition for two people in eastern Minnesota.

The two were arrested for spearing giant bullfrogs following a tip to the local conservation officer, said Glenn Nyquist, president of TIP (Turn in Poachers), Inc.

"When I reached the scene," said arresting officer Larry Webinger of LaCrescent, "I found the poachers had al-

2

ready speared seven frogs. Some of them were close to six inches long."

Frogs are protected by law in Minnesota. The giant bullfrog is a species of special concern due to its restricted range and low population. In court, the poachers pleaded. guilty and were fined $150.

Page 3: Vol. 6 (1986), No. 6

Raffle

We had a lot of prizes and a lot of winners at the June rafflee The total was $20.00! First prize was a real neat turtle hat donated by John Jesmer Jr. This was won by Ted Schave. Second prize was a Frogtown Greetings T-shirt that was donated by Fran Frisch. This was won by Jim Gerholdt. A cracked 10 gallon tank and a bag of "sweet and sour" snakes was won by Daniel Hornfeldt. The "snakes" were also donated by John Jesmer Jr. As this issue of the MHS Newsletter goes to press there is a hot rumor that a breeding loan between the turtle hat and Jim Gerholdt's frog hat is in the works!

3

Page 4: Vol. 6 (1986), No. 6

Herp Hints

Fran Frisch read excerpts from an article on substrates he had run across. It pointed out that cedar shavings are toxic to herps because of the resins and phenol compounds in cedar. Beware! A general discussion on bedding ensued. It was agreed that no particular type of bedding is right for every application.' Use your own judgement, and if you have doubts, check with someone with experience. Jim Gerholdt mentioned that his cage cleaning had gone high tech. He feels that a mini vacuum (such and a Dust Buster) is ideal for cleaning. It may not have a lot of suction or capacity, but it vacs up urate powders easily, and the tip can be dipped in disinfectant safely. John Moriarty announced that The Nature Conservance was sponsoring a trip to Weaver Dunes on June 7. John will head up the trip.

State Fair

Although MHS will not have a display at the State Fair again this year (keep your fingers crossed for 1987), there will still be Bob Duerr's Snake Zoo to see. Bob needs shed skins for this. He will give any MHS member free admission if they bring in a skin. Start peeling! He also just donated to us 100 more of his "I love Snakes " buttons. Thanks, Bob! Stop by and see him when you go to the Fair this year!

Como Zoo Display

The Como Zoo display daze were a real hit. There were quite a few MHS members involved in it (list will appear in a later Newsletter). Thanks to all who did participate and bring their herps. This was June 21 and 22. The highlight of the day was when Fran got bit by a boa. Who said snakes have no smarts? Como Zoo is supplying the cages for these displays, along with insurance. The next weekend will be August ? We'll have the dates next month.

MHS Field Study

No, we have not lost your phone numbers or given up this survey of the Ordway Natural History Study Area in Inver Grove Heights. The new person in charge of this is Paul Spencer. Paul has agreed to take this over. He will be in touch with you on this in the near future. All pertinent information has been sent on to him. I would like to extend a s~ecial thanks to Paul for agreeing to take this on!

MHS Library

There are some changes in o~. library. All back issues of exchange newsletters from other societies are now in the MHS Archives. Actually only the ones prior to 1984. 1984, 1985, and 1986 are available in the library at the meetings. If you need an earlier issue, see Nancy Haig or Becky Filler. Due to the strong

ann tactics outlined in last month's Newsletter, most of our overdue overdue books have been returned. They came back with a grand total of $25.00 in fines! Remember, somebody else might like to check out that book you have next month!

Combined, they served about 99.8 million people, or 42% of the

snakebites. The number of species involved and the severity of

bites is provided in tabular form.

It was interesting to note that nearly 5 0 % of all bites by

"Critter of the Month"

The "critter" for the Jt.me meeting was large turtles and tortoises. We had a good showing on this one, with some really large examples. They were:

Corrnnon Snapping Turtle (Chelydra serpentina) Blanding's Turtle (Emydoidea blandingi) Red Footed Tortoise (Geochelone carbonaria) Burmese Brown Tortoise (Geochelone emys) - 19" and 42 pounds. Leopard Tortoise (Geochelone pardalis) - 15~' I and 20 pounds. Forest Hinged Back Tortoise (Kinixys erosa) Alligator Snapping Turtle (Macroclernys temninckii) Eastern Box Turtle (Terrapene c. carolina) Gulf Coast Box Turtle (Terrapene carolina major)

These were brought by:

Dean Bowman Bruce and Connie Delles Jim Gerholdt Alina and Daniel Hornfeldt Ann Porwoll Toni Vangen

Thanks to all of the above (both "critters" and "bringers" from MHS!

Help A Hapless Herp

Once again the MHS adoption agency was busy finding homes for hapless herps! We had quite a few at the June meeting after same slim months. Seeking happy type homes were a female Bullsnake, a male Green Iguana, a male Diamondback Terrapin, 3 Reeve's Turtles, and a HUGE Common Snapping Turtle (16 3/4", estimated weight of between 40 and 50 pounds). Finding homes were the majority of these hapless herps. Nobody went for the snapper, and it was released the next day. It had been rescued from the soup pot! The male Diamondback Terrapin is still in need of a home. Any takers out there in MHS land? Stay tuned for the July meeting. Right now the terrapin is all we have, but 'Who knows what hapless herps lurk in the hearts of Minnesotans?

Refreshments

The refreshments at the Jt.me meeting were graciously supplied by Jane Kraft. A big MHS thanks to Jane for the goodies. They were enjoyed by all!

The latest issue of the MHS White Pages were available at the June meeting. Also hot off the press is the second issue of the MHS Occasional Papers. If you did not make it to the meeting, they will both be mailed to you. As our membership continues to grow, these white pages become more important so we can keep in touch with our membership. If you find errors, please let us know so we can nm the corrections in the Newsletter.

This information is necessary to begin recovery and management plans for these rare animals. This is a long term conservation and basic research project supported by the nongame division of the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources in cooperation with The Nature Conservancy and the Milwaukee Public Museum. My information or inquiries should be sent to: Gary S. Casper, Vertebrate Division, Milwaukee Public Museum, 800 W. Wells Street, Milwukee, WI 53233. Phone: 414-278-2782.
