90s DANCE PLANNEDSAXON – “Thunderbolt” -All Hail…..the mighty Saxonhas returned. After 40 yearsof combat on the heavy metalbattlefields, and 21 albumsunder their shields theypresent us with this-albumnumber 22, so prepare thyself.O.k., that introduction mightbe a bit dramatic, but it getsthe point acrossthat this is oneof my all-timefavourite metalbands, and thatE n g l a n d ’ sSaxon has beencarrying thebanner ofclassic heavymetal since1977, and theywere part ofT N W O B H M(The New Wave of BritishHeavy Metal) influencingdecades of metal bands thatfollowed, and if this album isany indication Saxon showsno sign of slowing down anytime soon. The album opens up withthe opus “Olympus Rising”,which leads into the title track;“Thunderbolt”. This song is100% pure classic heavymetal-and it bears all thehallmarks of the Saxon brand;great vocals by Biff Byford, wailing guitars by Paul Quinnand Doug Skarratt, poundingdrums by Nigel Glockler andearth-shaking bass lines byNibbs Carter. As for some ofthe other songs here,“Predator” is definitely theheaviest song-and rightly so
as death metal singer JohanHegg (of the band AmonAmarth) growls along with BiffByford on a song that is notfor the weak of heart. Just to show how diverseSaxon can be, the track “TheyPlayed Rock and Roll” is anover the top sound-alike tributeto the band Motorhead, withthe number detailingMotorhead and the legendaryLemmy’s history-with Saxonpresenting the song in great
speed metalfashion. Classichorror rears it’sghastly head onthe track“Nosferatu (TheVampire’s Waltz)”and history comesalive on “Sons ofOdin” which is, ofcourse, a Viking’sdream come to
life. The unsung heroes of theband, and rock in roll ingeneral are paid tribute to inthe number “Roadie’s Song”.“A Wizard’s Tale” gives a nodto the myth and legendssurrounding Merlin andCamelot, and the track“Sniper” is faster than aspeeding bullet, and hits theheavy metal bullseye. The mighty Saxon will graceCanada’s shores in March, butalas, there are no concertdates east of Quebec. Thatmeans that this album willhave to feed our heavy metalhunger for some time as wehope and pray that Saxon willcontinue to carry the bannerof great heavy metal musiconto our shores.
