With the topic of politics dominating almost all of the news right now, Tidbits has decided to provide a departure from the serious stuff to share some interesting trivia about the subject. • The oldest president elected was Ronald Reagan, who was 69. Reagan and Gerald Ford were the two presidents who lived the longest after leaving office, as both lived to age 93.

While many of us are old enough to remember the startling news reports in 1961 of a permanent wall constructed to divide and isolate East Berlin from the rest of the world, most are at least familiar with its ultimate destruction in 1989. Follow along as we look at the 28-year history of this symbol of bondage and oppression, so typical of a society under the domination and control of a socialist-communist government. • At the end of World War II in 1945, both the

country of Germany and its capital city of Berlin were divided East and West. While the communist Soviet Union controlled the East, free democracy reigned in the West under the the allied powers of Great Britain, France and the United States.

• By 1949, the sharp governmental division of Germany and the city of Berlin became official. West Germany was called the Federal Republic of Germany, while East Germany was the German Democratic Republic (GDR).

• Since Berlin itself was entirely within the East sector and it was agreed that the city would be divided, West Berlin was an island of democracy within socialist-communist East Germany.

• Up until 1952, the lines between East Germany and the western occupied zones could be easily crossed in most places. When the population

in the Soviet-controlled East became more and more eager to flee the economic and political oppression of communism, great numbers of them defected to the West. By 1961, as some 1,500 people per day, including medical doctors and other educated professionals, were fleeing East Berlin seeking freedom, the Soviet government decided to take measures to stop what they called the “brain drain.”

• Rumors arose that the GDR was going to do something drastic to stop the exodus of people to the West. That rumor became a reality during the night of August 12, 1961, when soldiers and government-ordered construction crews were

• Reagan was the only president who had been divorced. Five presidents remarried after their wives died, two of them, John Tyler and Woodrow Wilson, while they were in office.

• Six U.S. presidents had no children. John Tyler had the most, fifteen! Tyler was called “His Accidency” by opponents, being the first vice president called to fill the office of president by the death of his predecessor, William Henry Harrison.

• Harrison died after being in office a scant 32 days. He took the oath of office on a cold and blustery day mixed with sleet and rain, March 4, 1841. Wearing no overcoat or hat, he delivered a two-hour inaugural address, the longest in American history. He became ill with pneumonia soon after and was bedridden for the remainder of his presidency, the shortest term of any U.S. president.

• There have been short and tall presidents, with James Madison the shortest at only 5’4”. Abraham Lincoln was the tallest at 6’4”, with Lyndon Johnson only an inch shorter. James Madison was also the lightest president, weighing only about 100 pounds. William Howard Taft was the heftiest, tipping the

scales at about 300 pounds. Taft actually had a specially made bathtub installed in the White House that would fit four normal sized men!

• More unusual than his hefty size were Taft’s pursuits after his presidency. He served as a Professor of Law at Yale University until President Warren G. Harding selected him to be Chief Justice of the Supreme Court in 1923, eight years after holding the office of president.

• As Chief Justice, Taft was also the only former president to swear in a new president, as he did to Calvin Coolidge in 1925. He later said that his greatest honor was serving as Chief Justice and wrote in his memoirs, “I barely remember that I ever was President.”

• When the government for the United States of America was first formed, there were no political parties in existence. In fact, George Washington served as president with no party affiliation at all.

• The emergence of group affiliations in the U.S. began in the late 1700s. On February 12, 1798, Thomas Jefferson wrote: “Two political sects have arisen within the U.S., the one believing that the executive is the branch of our government which the most needs support; the other that like the analogous branch in the English government, it is already too strong for the republican parts of the Constitution.”

• The former were called federalists, sometimes monocrats and sometimes aristocrats, some-times tories like the corresponding group in the English government. The latter were called republicans, whigs, anarchists, jacobins, and sometimes disorganizers.

• When the U.S. Constitution was written, there was no mention of political parties. Most of the framers of the document preferred that no opposing groups would form. They hoped the new nation would live in harmony and that everyone would just “get along” (most of us would agree with this today!).

• The current two-party system with Democrats and Republicans has been part of the political system in the U.S. for decades. The first party was originally formed from many of the advisers that George Washington consulted with. Oddly enough, the first political party, started in 1792, was called the Democratic Republican Party.

• There have been many changes in the views and agendas of political parties over the years. Smaller parties have tried to gain power but have never been very successful. The Republicans and Democrats still remain the

primary influences in our political machine. • Canada has also been a country dominated

by two political influences; the Liberal and Conservative parties. An interesting time in Canadian history was in 1854, a period when there were seven distinct political parties in the legislature.

The first Prime Minister of Canada, Sir John

Alexander Macdonald, was an in-teresting character who has always

held a unique spot in Canadian political history. He served from

1867 to 1873 and then again from 1878 to 1891 and is considered the “Father of

Confederation.” January 11th was established as Sir John A Day

in 2002.

brought in after midnight. As the people of both East and West Berlin slept, crews quickly put up concrete posts and strung rolls of barbed wire the entire length of the East/West border, and also cut the telephone lines.

• The next morning, Berliners were shocked to find that all access routes in both directions across the border were now blocked. More than 60,000 workers who commuted to better-paying jobs in West Berlin could not cross the line to get to work. If a person happened to be away from their loved ones and across the border that night, access was now impossible and they were unable to return -- for decades. No longer could they visit or even communicate with friends and relatives on the other side.

• To better ensure that no refugees escaped into West Berlin, the barbed wire was soon replaced with a permanent concrete wall.

• A second wall was later added about 150 feet parallel to the first, leaving a wide “death zone” area in between to provide East German guards with a clear line of fire at fleeing refugees. The second wall was also constructed with over 300 watchtowers and thirty bunkers along the entire perimeter, which effectively prevented most attempts at escape. During the 28-year period between 1961 and 1989, many risked their lives trying to cross the dangerous zone, with conflicting reports of the resulting death toll varying from 136 to well above 200.

• President Ronald Reagan spoke to the people of West Berlin in a speech on June 12, 1987. His words, aimed at decreasing the tyrannical socialist grip and increasing freedom in the Eastern Bloc of Communist States, were some of the most memorable of his presidency: “General Secretary Gorbachev,” he said, “if you seek peace, if you seek prosperity for the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, if you seek

liberalization: Come here to this gate! Mr. Gorbachev, open this gate! Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!”

• The Wall stood for another two years until the government gradually began to relax some of its requirements for “private trips abroad” for certain qualifying individuals. Bolstered by the possibility that the border rules may be softening, thousands of East Germans began staging large protest gatherings, collectively demanding free passage to the outside world.

• Eventually, through a series of miscommun-ications and misunderstandings among govern-ment officials and radio news reports, rumors quickly spread that the gates were to be opened to everyone. As fast-growing crowds of excited East Berliners surged on the border gates, the vastly outnumbered soldiers yielded as people pressed through in a mass exodus, with the guards doing little or no identity checking.

• Although the official date given for the fall of the wall is November 9, 1989, it was not torn down in its entirety until later, pieces at a time by souvenir hunters and museum curators. The reunification of Germany was formally concluded on October 3, 1990. ■

In many areas November is still “sweater weather.” Maybe it’s not cold enough for winter coats, but a nice wool, cashmere or even a cotton or synthetic sweater is just right for the cool temperatures. Let’s look at a few tidbits about this snuggly attire as the chilly fall air sets in:• Sweaters have been around for centuries. The

need for something warm to add a layer for cool days brought about the hobbies of knitting and crocheting.

• Sweaters were originally used only for warmth or as athletic items and not for fashion, until the 1920s. When Lana Turner appeared in a fashionable sweater in the 1937 movie, “They Won’t Forget,” sweaters quickly became a “must” fashion statement for women.

• Cardigans, pullovers, sweater vests and more are now fashionable for men, women, boys and girls. One man who became known for wearing cardigan sweaters was “Mr. Rogers.”

• Fred McFeely Rogers, started the series, Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood in 1966. Prior to the show that made him a household name in children’s programming, he had produced The Children’s Corner in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in the early 1950s, winning the first of many television awards.

• A gentle, humble television star, Mr. Rogers became the symbolic sweater-wearer. His show would start by him entering his “television house” after walking from his office. He entered wearing his formal business attire and as he sang the words, “won’t you be my neighbor,” he would change into more comfortable clothes like his sweater and sneakers. This was the way he chose to get comfortable with friends as he shared his day with them in the “land of make-believe” and other areas of his neighborhood.

• Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood is still showing, in fact, it is the longest-running program on public television.

• President George W. Bush presented the Presidential Medal of Freedom to Mr. Rogers

in 2002, recognizing his contribution to the well-being of children and his long career in public television that demonstrated kindness, compassion and learning. The medal is the highest civilian award given in the United States.

• In his show, when Mr. Rogers would change his shoes and put on his sweater, he was showing skills as well as routines that children needed to learn. He always put his shoes away and hung up his clothes, setting an example for the kids.

• The type of sweater that Mr. Rogers wore was a cardigan. Typically they button or zip down the front. Even though he made the sweater popular for his television audience, it had been around for centuries. The sweater was named after the 7th Earl of Cardigan, James Thomas Brudenell, a British military commander. A cardigan sweater is normally made by machine or hand knitted from wool.

• Fishermen of France and the British Isles were probably the first people to use cardigans. The heavy, hand-knitted wool was helpful in keeping them warm out on the water on gloomy days.

• The Aran Islands off the west coast of Ireland at the mouth of Galway Bay on the Atlantic Ocean, an area where fishing and farming have been closely connected for centuries, are known for their wool sweaters. The outdoor workers needed suitable coverings to keep warm during North Atlantic winters.

• The sweaters were made with many stitches that became associated with particular Irish clans. Aran sweaters have been knitted since the late 1800s and are still in demand today. While in the past they were made by hand, machines are used for most today. A true hand-stitched Aran sweater is quite valuable. ■

A: I spoke with se-ries star Michael Steger, who plays Navid Shi-razi, and he told me to look for the darker side of Navid to come out. “Navid is thrown off-kilter a bit to where his character is tested when he learns Silver has chosen Teddy to be the father of her baby,” he said. “After almost having a one-night stand, he’s really not thinking. It’s completely out of character for him. He’s trying to get back to Silver, so he’s doing as much as he can in that area.” Michael and the rest of the cast are thrilled to celebrate a show milestone: They just filmed the 100th episode. “I feel like everybody’s in a place of gratitude and surprise that we’ve made it this long, and it’s nice to see. We’re hard at work with this new season, so we hope fans will enjoy it.” ***

Intercepting Wages May Be Legal Dear Mary: My nephew is having his wages garnished by a credit card company for a past due account. Are they allowed to do that? -- Bonnie, New Hampshire

Dear Bonnie: Generally, if your nephew has a job and the creditor has sued, won in court and received a judgment, they may be able to grab up to 25 percent of your nephew’s wages until that judgment is satisfied. The process, permitted in nearly every state, is called a “wage garnishment.” To garnish his wages, your nephew’s pay must be above the poverty line, no other garnishments must be in ef-fect (unless the garnishment is for child or spousal support), and he must not have filed for bankruptcy. * * * Dear Mary: I have been told that if I have any “extra” money at the time my child is apply-ing for college financial aid, I should withdraw the amount in cash and hide it. For example, if my contingency fund has a balance of $10,000 and my freedom account has $9,500, it will look like I have $20,000 at my disposal for college. My friend says it would be better to get a safe deposit box and put the $20,000 in there in cash. She also says that if it is on our bank statement, then it will count against us as far as financial aid. What do you say? -- Sandy, Colorado

Dear Sandy: I’m sure your friend means well, but if you follow this advice you might find yourself looking out at the world from behind bars. Hiding assets on a financial aid form con-stitutes fraud and is punishable by a $20,000 fine (bye-bye CF and FA), up to 19 months in federal prison or both. There’s a fine line between maximiz-ing eligibility for college financial aid by sheltering assets and hiding assets in order to qualify. One is legal; the other is not. The children of people making $150,000 a year may qualify for financial aid, while the kids of people making $50,000 may not. It all depends on how the rest of the parents’ finances shake out and whether the school uses the popular “federal meth-odology” to determine financial aid (where home equity doesn’t count) or the “institutional methodol-ogy” used by more elite schools, where it does. College saving and asset planning has become very complicated. I suggest you do a lot of research, which can easily be done on the web. A

site like FinAid.org and its sister site FastWeb.com offer information on financial planning for college, and scholarship research, tips and searches. With the change in the economy and tight-ening of the credit industry, private loans are harder to get. But that’s not necessarily a bad thing. As I’m sure you’ve read, parents and graduates alike are feeling the burden of too much student loan debt. Women Vets Getting Better Health Care The gap between the health care received by men and women veterans is closing. So says the De-partment of Veterans Affairs. According to its website, women’s health care through the Women Veterans Health Program focus-es on a number of areas: Comprehensive primary care: The plan is to include gender-specific care at every VA site, includ-ing physical rehab, maternity care, acute and chronic illness, disease prevention and screening, and more. Women’s health education: The VA is training more and more health-care providers to work specifi-cally with women. Reproductive health: The VA is increasing its coordination of female-specific treatments to provide a full range of medical services, including Pap tests, birth control, mammograms and breast cancer care. A recent press release by the VA says that it leads the nation in breast cancer screening rates with 87 percent of eligible women veterans receiving screening. It has 45 facilities with digital mammogra-phy, and mobile mammography in rural areas of the country. Special populations: Women veterans who live in rural areas or are homebound can take advantage of mobile clinics, e-clinics and home-based services. Older women veterans can take advantage of treat-ments for cardiovascular disease, diabetes, osteopo-rosis and menopause. If you’re a female vet and you haven’t hooked up with the VA for any of your health care, check it out. You can start online at the Women Veterans Health Care website: www.womenshealth.va.gov. You can apply online and fill out the VA Form 10-10EZ. Look for the video that will walk you through the enroll-ment process. Or you can call the VA Health Benefits Call Center at 1-877-222-8387 if you have questions about enrolling or any other benefits. At the website you can locate a facility in your area. For a non-emergency, it’s required that you be scheduled for an appointment within 14 days.

It’s the Deed, Not the Breed Opponents of breed-specific legislation have a mantra: It’s the deed, not the breed. And they’re right. I’ve witnessed dogs of all breeds, all shapes, all sizes display dangerous behavior, the kind of aggression that leads to serious and even fatal con-sequences. More often, I’ve witnessed dog owners create dangerous situations by not recognizing that a dog is a dog and taking reasonable precautions. In 2000, a Pomeranian killed a 6-week-old infant in her crib. This past April, a Golden retriev-er-Labrador mix killed a 2-month-old infant in his swing. The Pomeranian was alone in a crib with a baby because the child’s caretaker put him there. The Lab was left unsupervised in a room with a child swinging back and forth, legs dangling, look-ing much like a toy. Do we need to seriously consider banning Pomeranians and Labradors? Wouldn’t do much good. Either of these scenarios could have played out with a dachshund or a Yorkie or a puggle or a St. Bernard. These were manmade disasters. There are two major problems with breed-specific legislation. 1. Poorly written legislation abounds. Existing bans include wording such as “pit bull-like breeds” and “dangerous dogs” and “fighting breeds,” not to mention complicated percentages of DNA. Are we supposed to walk around with papers for our dogs in hand, swabs at the ready? Even when we have the paperwork, it might not be enough. In 2007, animal control officers in Kansas City, Kan., seized Mike and Amy Johnson’s dog, Niko, for violating the city’s ban against har-boring pit bulls. It took eight months of lawyers and hearings and a DNA test for the Johnsons to prove what they and Niko’s paperwork had been saying from the get-go: Niko is a boxer mix. Meanwhile, Niko spent eight months locked up in a city kennel because she was judged to be something she’s not: a pit bull and therefore danger-ous. In reality, she’s a boxer and completely harm-less. 2. Zeroing in on breed removes the focus from where it belongs: on responsible dog owner-

She was a good family dog when they seized her as a pit, and she was a good family dog when they released her as a boxer. Where opponents of breed-specific legisla-tion go wrong is in not recognizing that some leg-islation serves a good and valid purpose. Hollister, Calif., requires that all pit bulls and Chihuahuas be sterilized. I’m not a resident of Hollister, but if you walk into pretty much any shelter in pretty much any U.S. city, it becomes clear why the city of Hollister wrote and passed such an ordinance: There are so many pit bulls and Chihuahuas already in need of good homes. The numbers are overwhelming. It baffles me why more cities don’t do the same. Mandatory spay/neuter is a touchy subject, but proponents have the numbers on their side. The U.S. has a serious problem with dog and cat over-population. Shelters are full. Euthanasia rates are heartbreakingly high. And studies show that an in-tact male dog is more likely to roam and more likely to fight. Female dogs that are not spayed attract free-roaming males, and all of this increases the likeli-hood of dog fights and dog bites. In short, breed-specific legislation that is purposeful and reasoned may have its place. But outright bans are neither purposeful nor reasoned. They are reactionary and emotional and tantamount to “guilty until proved innocent” -- thinking that has no place in a just and great society. Woof! Free Contraceptives Cut Teen Abortions in Study Whether you believe in a woman’s right to choose or not, reducing the number of abortions is as commendable a goal as avoiding unintended pregnancies. This particularly applies to women who are too young or, for any other reason, not ready to become a parent. According to a paper published in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, 49 percent of all pregnancies in the United States between 2006 and 2008 were unintended. And the cost is high -- $11 billion annually for every 1 million unin-tended births. Because of the high prevalence of teen preg-nancy, a concerted education effort has been under way to encourage responsibility, abstinence and the importance of contraception. Between 1990 and 2008, teen pregnancies fell by 40 percent, ac-cording to the National Center for Health Statistics. Pregnancy rates during that period also declined in women in their 20s and increased in women in their 30s and 40s. These days, planned pregnancies are occur-ring later and later. In 2008, there were 4.24 million new births, 1.2 million abortions and 1.1 million spontaneous fetal losses. Most encouraging is the continued decline in birthrates for girls between the ages of 15 and 19. In 2011 that number decreased to 31.3 births per 1,000 teens, compared to 34.2 births per 1,000 teens in 2010. Currently, the teen birthrates for all ages and all ethnic groups are at historic lows. Sadly in 2011, 88.5 percent of all teen births were to unwed moth-ers. The reduction in teen pregnancy is thought to represent better education, abstinence and easier access to contraception. While there has been a decline in unwanted pregnancies, in recent years there has been an as-sault on contraception by many groups who claim it promotes promiscuity and is no better than an abortion. Sandra Brown, chief executive officer of the National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unwanted Pregnancies, said, “I can’t remember a time when contraception has been so mischaracterized and maligned.” This is a serious concern. We must all be able to follow our doctrines and religious doctrine, and no one should force the use of contraception on anyone who is opposed to it for whatever reason. At the same time, access to methods to prevent unwanted pregnancies is supported by the Cen-ters for Disease Control and Prevention. And the Institute of Medicine recommends that every form of contraception be provided without cost as part of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010. If contraception is acceptable to you, you should be aware of the choices and educated on their use, and they should be available and afford-able. What are the benefits of ready-access to contraception? In the Obstetrics and Gynecology article, Dr. Jeffrey Peipert and Dr. Robert Terry of the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis examined the effects of free access to contraceptives on pregnancies and abortions in

9,256 teens and young women enrolled in the Con-traceptive Choice Project in St. Louis. The women, who received free contraceptives, were followed from August 2007 to September 2011. The most important finding from this report was the overall reduction in the abortion rate per 1,000 women ranging from 62 percent to 78 percent dur-ing the four years of the study. Compared to na-tional statistics, the birthrate for teenagers between the ages of 15 and 19 was 6.3 per 1,000 teens compared to a national average of 34.3 per 1,000 teens during the same year (2010). Clearly, contraceptives decrease unwanted pregnancies and abortions. Simultaneously, we must respect the wishes of anyone who does not believe in contraception. We must do all we can to assure that a woman of any age is able to have a child if that is her wish, that she and her child are treated with dignity and respect, and that the family continues to have access to education, good nutri-tion and excellent health care. Parent and child must always have the opportu-nity to become productive and valuable members of our great community.

Not Your Grandma’s Social Security Office Are the services that people get from the So-cial Security Administration improving or declining? Is your nearest Social Security office a pleasant place to visit? Or is it just a few notches above your local Department of Motor Vehicles bureau? I get emails from some readers telling me that they were happy with the atmosphere of their Social Security office and pleased with the professionalism of the staff. Unfortunately, I get many more emails from readers who complain about overflowing waiting rooms, generally unpleasant surroundings and over-all poor service following a visit to the Social Security office. I would like to think that this is based on the maxim that folks are more likely to complain about poor service than they are to applaud good service. But sadly (and this is coming from a retired 32-year veteran SSA employee), I’ve heard so many com-plaints about poor service, unanswered questions and even alleged misinformation being given, that I must conclude that SSA’s commitment to provide top qual-ity service to its customers is going downhill. This opinion was reinforced when I recently learned that many Social Security offices will soon be closing their doors at 3:00 p.m., an hour or two earlier than in the past. And I’ve also heard from my contacts within the agency that there are long term plans to lock the doors of all offices one day a week and to pos-sibly close some local offices all together. In their defense, SSA officials point out that the agency’s online resources are always increasing. In other words, people can go to www.socialsecurity.gov and take care of almost any kind of Social Security business they formerly only could do in a local field office. They can apply for a new or replacement Social Security card. They can get an estimate of their future Social Security benefits. They can download about a hundred publications that explain all the facets of the various Social Security programs. They can file a claim for any kind of Social Security benefit. They can get access to actuarial reports and a whole variety of research and statistical data. Those are just a few examples of the many services available -- 24 hours a day, seven days a week. I will admit their website is very thorough. Indeed, some have complained that it’s too thorough. There is a ton of information available online, but that’s because SSA is such a huge agency, with pro-grams and rules and regulations that impact every man, woman and child in the country. However, links to the kinds of services most people are looking for are rather easy to find and simple to follow. Yet, I still have an uneasy feeling about the di-rection the agency is headed. There may be too much reliance on Internet services and not enough thought given to providing efficient and professional one-on-one personal counseling that often can be needed. Here is a case in point. I have written many times in recent columns about the various ways peo-ple can try to maximize their Social Security benefits. Here is one simple example. A 66-year-old man who is still working plans to wait until age 70 to file for retire-ment benefits because he wants to get the 32 percent bonus paid to folks who put off taking Social Security for those four years. But if he has a wife who was a stay at home mom and thus has no Social Security on

her own, he can file for his retirement at age 66 so his wife can then claim dependent spouse’s benefits on his account. Then he would immediately suspend his benefits waiting for the age 70 bonus. But his wife would get her dependent’s benefits during those four years. Just try setting up that kind of claims scenario online. It can’t be done. Or rather, it can’t be done eas-ily. And here’s what makes the case for declining Social Security service even more distressing. Some of these maximizing strategies can be rather compli-cated. And I have heard from many readers who told me that the Social Security representative they were dealing with on the phone or in person did not un-derstand the procedures involved. And in some cases, they were even told that such a strategy was not pos-sible. I’m afraid this is a result of the decline in training offered to Social Security personnel. When I started with the agency in 1973, I received almost three months of very intensive classroom training that covered all aspects of the many Social Security programs. These were relatively small classes taught by very experienced Social Security program experts. Today’s new SSA employees get a much-ab-breviated training program and the sessions tend to include a lot of online-based lessons. It’s just not the same as being taught by a human being who knows the ins and outs of Social Security laws and rules. It’s the decline in training and in the personal approach to service that troubles me the most about today’s Social Security office. I can remember in the early days of my career being sent from my district field office to small towns and villages in the area where I set up a mini Social Security office for the day. I enjoyed being “Mr. Social Security” in those little far-flung burgs. I even was sent to people’s homes to help them with their Social Security problems or issues. I know I am coming across as an aging fuddy-

duddy pining for “the good old days.” Just as it isn’t possible for doctors to make house calls anymore, it isn’t economically viable to offer one-on-one Social Security service in small towns and especially in peo-ple’s homes. But I’m just not sure if an over-reliance on the Internet and an under-reliance on quality training and good old-fashioned personal service is the way to go.

Staying Active in Cold Weather Here in New England, our evening walking group has stopped for the season. It was a nearly unanimous decision, given the recent daily rain, dropping temperatures and earlier sunsets. I alone was the only holdout in the vote to stop walking until spring. If I’m going to continue to get any exercise as fall moves into winter and it’s too cold to go out, I’m going to have to plan for it and buy a few small pieces of equipment to keep in the house. Unless you’re fortunate enough to live in Southern California or some other warm winter climate, this advice won’t apply as much for you. But if you’re forced indoors by cold weather as I am, a “mini-stepper” can serve as a temporary re-placement for outdoor walking or using a treadmill at the gym. The mini-stepper has a place for both feet, and you just walk in place. The one I have my eye on is the The Wagan Compact Mini Stepper Exerciser, Model 2272. I found it on the Safe Home Products web-site (www.safehomeproducts.com). This stepper has a tubular steel frame with handholds for better balance, adjustable tension for a harder or easier workout, and it only takes up about 1 square foot of floor space. If you aren’t sure of your balance, a “ped-dler” might be the perfect choice for you. With a peddler, you sit in a chair and peddle like you’re on a bicycle. To make sure of getting an upper-body workout, take a look at handheld weights. If weight on your hands is a problem, you might want the kind that strap to your wrist. Either one would give a mild workout to shoulders and arms. As always, before you purchase any exer-cise gear, ask your doctor if he thinks it would be a right choice for you.

ANSWER: One of nature’s smallest crea-tures, the head louse upsets domestic tranquility with more revulsion than most health-endangering illnesses. Head lice bring no disease with them. They are tiny, only 3 millimeters (1/10 inch) in length. They feed on blood and die within a day or two off the scalp. After feeding, lice have a reddish-brown hue. The mother louse glues louse eggs to hair, and those structures are called nits. They are only 1 mil-limeter (4/100 inch) long. The eggs hatch in six to 10 days. If nits are more than a quarter of an inch from the scalp, the baby louse has already hatched, and the nit is no longer a problem. In an average life span of three months, the mother louse can lay up to 300 eggs. Lice are not an indication of poor hygiene. Most of the time, they’re introduced into a family by a child who caught them at school. They can infest other family members quickly. Transmission comes from direct contact with an infested individual and, less often, from contact with inanimate objects used by that individual, like hats, combs, brushes and bedding. You’re not alone. Six to 12 million Ameri-cans come down with head lice yearly. Almost all people with head lice have intense scalp itching. A number of methods effectively rid you of the problem. The first medicines used are per-methrin (Nix) or pyrethrins (Rid), which are cheap and usually effective, although lice are becoming resistant to them in some locations. A second treat-ment is given seven to 10 days after the first. Ovide (malathion) is used if lice linger after Nix or Rid. And should Ovide not work, the oral medicine Stromectol (ivermectin) is available. A new medicine is Natroba (spinosad) suspension. It is held in reserve as a last resort. This nightmare should be over in two to three weeks. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: My husband was told he had prostate cancer in 2010 and had his prostate removed. Now his doctor wants him to have PSA testing. He says he might need radiation because he has prostate cancer. If he has no prostate gland, how can he have pros-tate cancer? -- D.R. ANSWER: The doctor wants to be sure that cancer cells did not spread from to other body sites. Even though the gland was completely removed, not all the potential sites for cancer spread were re-moved. That’s all but impossible to do. The PSA test will show if prostate cancer is active in those other places. If it is, then further treatment is required. Why Won’t They Help Me?

Q: I may have a few wrinkles at 81, but I don’t think I’m a mean looking guy. Howev-er, last week I parked at a fast food restaurant and returned to my car with my lunch. When I turned the ignition key it began a grinding noise, which I knew meant my battery was dead. I had left my cell phone at home (again), so I went back into the restaurant to find someone who would call my auto club for me. I walked from table to table asking if someone could make the call. None even wanted to talk to me! Finally, the manager agreed to help if I handed her my membership card. The mechan-ic arrived and jump-started my battery. What has happened to common civility in our society? Have we completely lost our way?

A: Today a cold indifference toward strang-ers is not unusual. Researchers define choosing not to get involved as “the bystander response.” We learn either from experience or through the media that unintended bad things can happen if we do become involved. A shrewd attorney can turn our good inten-tions into a horrible lawsuit and legal battle. People, especially those in large populations, are wary of this sad fact and often turn the other way assuming every stranger is a weirdo or someone who will sue them. Researchers have also found that bystanders who see several people standing around an emergen-cy situation will assume that no help is needed and choose not to get involved. Fortunately, not everyone backs away from helping others and are willing to step in and make a difference. I suggest you make your cell phone a part of your daily wardrobe, like your wallet and comb, and make sure the batteries stay charged. Scout out your home territory to learn where police and fire stations, hospitals and urgent care centers are located so you can best find emergency help quickly. I even remember how easy it was to hitch-hike regularly on Route 66 from home to college in the 1950s. Who would even consider that today? * * *

Q: My wife and I are retiring soon, and we do not as yet have an estate plan. We are planning to make an appointment soon to do so. We have a married son and a married daughter, along with grandchildren. What is a good way to begin the process?

A: First, if you have substantial assets, do not

rush to make the appointment since it’s highly likely that, regardless of who wins the election, there will be major changes made in our tax code. Even those with existing plans are prepared to change their commit-ments when and if Congress discusses and firms up their differences. This will take some time. Prior to your first appointment, you will save both money and time by some pre-planning. All estate planners have a checklist which you will need to com-plete to determine who, what and when your will or trust becomes effective. Consider what might happen in the event of a divorce, who should be your executor, and other major considerations. No two families end up with the same wishes, and often working out the details re-quires a number of appointments. It is important you have made your decision to designate your wishes! The Smasher and the Simply Smashing

Before he hit the 40-feet hook shot out of the straw to take him to within two putts of the Green Jacket, a little bit of banter in the room turned to what Bubba Watson was wearing.

As most of us know by now, Bub-ba Watson won the Masters, largely due to his monstrous 300-plus yard drives and unorthodox swinging style. But I, too, became curious about Watson’s game and, yes, his style, too.

For the techies out there, Watson uses a PING G20 driver with a cus-tom pink True Temper Grafalloy Bi-Matrix shaft. The same exact driver will be made available to pro shops this year, the company announced after the tournament.

Pink is a color that most sports fans are becoming accustomed to. It appears in splashes on various uni-forms these days to signify the fight against breast cancer, a cause that has successfully managed to co-opt that color and increase awareness. Knowing this, we were all a little leery of making fun of the color.

And we were right: Ping donates $300 to Watson’s charity for every 300-foot drive he makes. His Phoe-nix-based charity aims to donate $1 million to various organizations

during the year, and after this win, it’s a safe bet to say it will do so.

But his manner of dress and that unorthodox swinging style also reminded me of former PGA tour-nament winner from the ‘60s, Doug Sanders.

Known as the “Peacock of the Fairways,” Sanders came out of nowhere to win the Canadian Open as an amateur. His best finish at the Masters was a fourth place tie, and he won 20 events on the Tour, but Sanders was best known for his manner of dress. Sanders was famous for his “Mad Men”-esque devotion to what he wore. He was known to wear golf shoes that looked more like dress shoes, pleated golf plants, button-down cardigans and a golf polo. Each out-fit had complimentary colors of the same shade, and he even made sure his golf bags matched his outfit.

While both Sanders and Watson are philanthropists and champions, they have something else in com-mon — they’re both self-taught golfers. Neither has taken a lesson in his life. Sanders grew up a poor cotton farmer’s son; Watson’s father was a Green Beret Vietnam veteran who gave him a 9-iron once and told him to “beat it down the fairway.”

Well, Watson surely will be beat-ing it down the fairway for a while now, and nobody will make fun of his clothes anymore, but I have one suggestion — and I’m sure Mr. Sanders would agree — you should at least shave before putting on the Green Jacket. Sure he won in a play-off, but this isn’t hockey, you know.

The Superman TV show offered a membership certificate that included a Super-man button and the Superman Secret Krypton Code. I still have the envelope it came in and a special fold-er for keep-ing the Se-cret Key Codes in a safe place. I believe I was around 6 when I sent for the mem-bership, but it’s hard to r e m e m b e r back that far. I’m 67 now! I would like to know if my certifi-cate has any value.

A: The Superman fan club was established in 1939 and continued until the 1960s. Each mem-bership club packet arrived in an envelope that con-tained the letter of membership certificate, a secret decoder sheet, a folder to store the decoder sheet and a tin button. Armed with the Key Codes, kids could decode Superman’s Secret Messages that ap-peared in issues of Action Comics. Your Superman packet has sold as high as $300. * * *

Q: This mark is on a service for an eight-set of dinnerware that I have. It originally belonged to my great-grandmother. The dishes are deco-rated with multicolored floral bands against a white background. On the back of each dish are the words “Sunrise Dinnerware.” Since I plan to pass the set down to my

daughter, we would like to know more about its history, age and value.

A: Homer Laughlin China Company made your dinnerware. They had factories in East Liv-erpool, Ohio and Newell, W.V. The number “17 -- N” shows your set was made around 1907 at their Newell plant. Sunrise Dinnerware was sold through Sears and Montgomery Ward. Laughlin China is still in business. If you had to replace or insure your service for eight set of dinnerware, its value would probably be $300 to $500.

Down Goes Jeter Peter is one of the best session guitarists in Los Angeles, but he’s having a hard time playing tonight. Six years sober, he’s usually able to play through a riot with the concentration that comes from almost triple that amount of time playing on stages in bars and clubs. He’s supposed to be recording tonight, but he can’t take his eyes off the game. “Dude ... Swisher looks like he’s on heroin,” he declares. “He completely lost the game for us! What is he? Like, one for 40?” Peter doesn’t really think Nick Swisher, the rightfielder for the New York Yankees, is on heroin, but he does think he’d be a better choice in right than Swisher. Even he could go hitless and not catch any hard hit ball coming his way, he reasons. After a few swigs of orange Fanta, Peter gets back into the pocket during a commercial. The sound on the TV is off while he plays, and he starts recording the track. He stops playing when Derek Jeter goes down. He stands up. “Oh my god! Did Jeter just break his an-kle?” The replay shows it all ... and as replays are wont to do, it shows a diving Derek Jeter break-ing his ankle, again and again. At this point, nobody is really certain that Jeter, the best shortstop in Yankee history and the only player to gather 200 hits in postseason play, did actually break his ankle. Watching him get carried off the field is excruciating enough, but the sound has to be turned up to confirm. Ron Darling and John Smoltz surmise that he may have broken his ankle. “Whatever,” he says, rolling his eyes. “Thanks, guys.” The TV is again muted, and he signals to the engineer that he’s ready to play. He takes a deep breath and launches into what ultimately would be just one of about 20 takes that night. The singer misses his mark, and he stops in frustration. “They had, what? Fifteen runners on base tonight? This game should been over in the fifth inning,” he says. The singer says Jeter’s career is over. “He’s got a bum wheel now ... that’s chronic pain,” he says. “I sprained my ankle 20 years ago, and I still can’t put my work boots on when it’s rain-ing.” Peter shakes his head and tries to get back into the song. He takes a deep breath and strums an A chord. He stops again and pulls out his iPhone. After a few clicks, he announces the verdict. Swisher, again, doesn’t fare well. “It’s broken. And Swisher looked like he was on heroin, bro.” He shakes his head and goes back to the guitar. It’s going to be a long night. “Jeter, man,” he says. “Jeter.”

How many times have you hit a nice approach shot only to have the ball run through the green, leaving you with a tricky “short-sided” chip shot? When there’s very little green to work, my tech-nique for this shot should help you lob it in close to the hole for a short and easy putt. To see if your shot is short sided, pace off your distance and see if the half way mark is off the green. If so, you’ll need either a lob wedge or a sand wedge for the shot. Open your stance and the clubface slightly in your set up. If your stance is opened 10 degrees, the clubface should be opened by 10 degrees as well. Grip the club with your thumbs on top and slightly to the left. The technique for this swing is simple; make a half swing so the hands are about hip high, and a quarter swing in the follow through, keeping the clubhead below your hips. This swing should sweep through the ball very smooth-ly, like a pendulum. As you make your forward swing, make sure you have support from your lower body. Notice in the photo how my right hip has turned through to the target to give support to the upper body. The key to hitting this shot successfully is to brush the grass under the ball. Brushing the grass gets the ball high on the clubface resulting in a lofted arc and a soft landing. You’ll get very little roll and stay close to the hole.

Lob Shot Around the Greens

Many times we have hit a nice approach shot only to havethe ball run through the green, leaving us a very difficult shortsided chip shot. “Short siding” means that you have very littlegreen to work with on the chip shot. My technique for the lobshot can help you hit these shots close to the hole for a shortputt.The way to check to see if you are short sided is to pace offyour shot and establish a half way mark between your balland the hole. If the half way mark is off the green, than youwill want to play this lob shot.First off you want to play the shot preferably with a lobwedge. If you don’t have a lob wedge than go to your sandwedge. • The Canadian parties at that time consisted of four groups from Northern Canada: 1) the Tories, 2) moderate Conservatives, led by the first Prime Minister of Canada, John A. Macdonald, known as “Sir John A.,” 3) Baldwin Reformers, who were moderate Liberals, and 4) the Radical or advanced Liberal party, known as the “Clear Grits.”

• The other three parties were from Lower Canada. They were: 1) Parti Bleu, the majority of the French Canadians, considered a liberal party even though most French Canadians were conservative, 2) the Parti Rouge, which was a small party of French Canadian Liberals, some who were rather radical, and lastly, 3) an English-speaking minority in Lower Canada.

• People all over the world get fed up with politics. At a parliamentary election in Naples, Italy in 2008, a 41-year-old man publicly ate his ballot in protest of the country’s politicians. He was charged with destroying election materials.

• In 2004, a woman in England was fined for trying to register her cows, named Henry and Sophie Bull, and her dog, Jake Woofies, as eligible voters. Her barn was listed as a separate property, and when the forms asked who the occupants of the property were, she listed the animals as residents by name!

• For a completely bizarre slant on election procedures, imagine the chaos if our North American countries had the monumental confusion of over 1,000 political parties competing for office! According to the Election Commission of India, that is the estimated number of parties that exist in that country. The commission has assigned a specific symbol for each party to use to represent their group, including a kite, diesel pump, kettle, pressure cooker and many, many others.

• So as you go to the polls this year, be very glad that we have an election system that lets you vote your convictions either left or right, and that our ballots don’t have pages of party choices ranging from kites to diesel pumps! ■
