After Spanish explorers established regular trade routes with the Americas, a troublesome new industry was also born: Pirating. Come along with Tidbits as we set sail and learn a thing or two about those ruthless scoundrels who looted and terrorized innocent merchants on the high seas and celebrated their ill-gotten gains!• Pirating reached its height during the years

1. Which is greater, the deepest part of the ocean or the height of Mount Everest - and by how much?

2. What is the overall average depth of theocean?

3. What percent of the world’s population lives within 60 miles of the coast?

4. In order of size, what are the three largest oceans on the planet?

5. What country has the longest coastline in the world?

While piracy at sea was a predominantly male activity or occupation, a small minority of historical pirates have been female. The women who were involved in this marauding lifestyle shared the same hazards and dangers as the men, and suffered the same dire consequences when justice finally had them cornered. Read on to learn about two such females who, through a series of entangled circumstances, met each other disguised as shipmates aboard a pirate vessel and became best friends and partners in crime.• Anne Bonny was born in Ireland in the late 1600s

as the child of her father’s illicit affair with a chambermaid. To avoid social embarrassment, her parents moved to America where her father later became wealthy as a merchant and plantation owner in South Carolina.

• Anne had an adventurous spirit and married James Bonny, who was like-minded and somewhat of a renegade. They moved to the Bahamas and settled near a pirate’s hide-away camp, where Anne became intrigued by the lifestyle led by these bandits of the sea.

• When the Governor of the Bahamas offered an attractive reward in exchange for information about pirate activity on his islands, James Bonny eagerly took the money and divulged everything he knew. Anne was outraged by his selfish act and subsequently divorced him.

• Not long afterwards, she fell in love with a dashing young pirate named Captain Jack Rackham.

• Anne begged to travel with Captain Rackham as he plundered the seas, but having a woman on board a ship was, for many reasons, a bad idea. So she disguised herself as a man, serving alongside the other sailors aboard Rackham’s sloop called the Vanity.

• In the meantime, Mary Read was born into complicated circumstances in England around 1690. Her mother married a sailor and they had a son. The sailor was lost at sea about the time Mary’s mother found herself pregnant by another man. The son, Mary’s half-brother, died when Mary was very little. The sailor’s family did not know about Mary, so her mother dressed her as a boy and passed her off as her dead half-brother in order to get financial support from her mother-in-law. The ploy worked, and Mary spent the rest of her childhood pretending to be a boy, even after her grandmother died.

• Mary Read found that life was easier for a man than it was for a woman, so she continued to

out. Likewise, ships’ officers were often elected democratically. Many pirate captains preferred to win their battles with a show of force rather than bloodthirsty slaughter. Booty was generally divided fairly, with the captain receiving a share and a half; officers receiving a share and a quarter; and crew getting one share each. No one on the pirate ship was paid anything unless they looted something of value. Most ships carried musicians on board to provide entertainment and fight boredom.

PIRATE WAYS• In the late 1600s, when most of humanity was

still illiterate, ships flew flags with pictures on them indicating their identity and intentions. Flags might depict an hourglass (indicating time running out for surrender), or a sword (indicating willingness to fight), or a skull and crossbones, which was by far the most popular design. The color of a flag also sent messages: A black flag meant the pirates would give quarter, and would spare the lives of the captured crew if the treasure was handed over without a fight. If the victims refused to lay down their weapons, a red flag (often dipped in blood) would be run up. If a red flag was flying, it meant no quarter would be given and the crew should expect to die. Seeing the sight of a red flag with skull and crossbones was often all it took to convince the victims to give up and surrender their goods. After all, the cargo on board usually didn’t even belong to them. A white flag indicated surrender.

• The French phrase ‘joli rouge’ means ‘pretty red’ which is thought to be the reason the pirate flag is called the Jolly Roger.

• Cannon shot was carefully aimed to destroy the sails and masts of the ships being captured without damaging the ship itself. Pirates needed to immobilize the ship but did not want to destroy it. Treasure didn’t do much good if it was sitting on the bottom of the ocean, and the boat itself was a prize worth keeping. Cannonballs were often made imperfectly on purpose because they would make more noise in flight if they were not perfectly round. A roaring, whistling cannonball was far more terrifying and intimidating than a quiet one.

• The fierce Gujarati pirates made captured merchants swallow an emetic called tamarindi mixed with salty sea water which would cause

or so before they were either drowned, killed or jailed. Although a small few made a fortune and quietly retired, it was far more common for the ones who gained wealth to squander it in short order, necessitating another quest at sea.

MYTHS & LEGENDS• The image of the typical pirate that’s been

passed down through history is partly true and partly false. Pirates often wore a scarf tied around their head to keep their hair out of their face and to prevent sweat from running into their eyes. They frequently went barefoot which gave them better traction on slippery decks. Pirates wore earrings because they thought it would improve their vision. (Acupuncturists say this isn’t far from the truth.)

• Burying their treasure is something that seldom happened, although there are a few such cases on record. Leaving a treasure behind left it vulnerable. Most often plunder was carried to the nearest port and sold. Likewise, walking the plank was a rare occurrence. In fact, there are only two pirates known to have used that method. One was Major Stede Bonnet, who is credited with inventing it, and the other was a Dane called Captain Derdrake. More commonly, condemmed men were simply thrown overboard.

• Contrary to popular belief, a pirate ship tended to be a fairly democratic workplace. A charter establishing ship rules would be drawn up at the start of each voyage with each sailor contributing to the list and expected to stick to it. Disability awards were given to pirates wounded in battle. Usually, the captain was elected by secret ballot and could be voted

them to vomit, throwing up any gemstones they may have swallowed prior to being caught.

TALK LIKE A PIRATE• The word ‘pirate’ comes from the Greek

‘peiran’ meaning ‘to attack.’ • The word ‘careen’ comes from the French

word ‘carene’ meaning the keel of a ship. Boats that collected barnacles and seaweed

Julius Caesar was kidnapped by pirates in 78 B.C. while he was sailing to Rhodes. He was heldprisoner for 38 days, until a ransom was paid. When he found out the ransom demand was a mere 20 talents, he in- sisted he was worth at least 50 and the pirates complied. His captors treated him well, although they told him the poetry he composed while imprisoned was terrible. Caeser was incensed by this insult, and after his release he had the pirates hunted down and crucified.

In the late 1600s, Bartholomew Sharp and his pirate crew captured a vessel loaded with tin. They threw the useless cargo overboard except for a small amount they kept to make bullets. Only later did they discover it wasn’t tin at all, but silver. They had thrown $750,000 worth of the precious metal into the sea.

masquerade as a man into adulthood. She joined the military and became attracted to a fellow soldier. When she revealed her secret to him, the two fell in love. They were married and settled down to a normal husband-and-wife existence as innkeepers.

• When her husband died, Mary found herself destitute. She disguised herself as a man once again, and got a job as a sailor aboard a ship headed to the Caribbean. When the ship was overtaken by Captain Jack Rackham, she joined Rackham’s crew aboard the Vanity.

• It wasn’t long before Mary Read and Anne Bonny— both serving on the same ship, and both disguised as men— discovered each other’s secret. They became best of friends and served side-by-side for the next several years.

• In 1720 as the Vanity was anchored in a harbor off Jamaica, many of the men of the crew were drunk. Suddenly a British navy sloop hove into view, and before the crew had time to react the Vanity was under attack. The sailors cowered below, leaving Mary and Anne to fight the invaders on their own. The women yelled at their mates to “come up, you cowards, and fight like men!” but to no avail. Infuriated, Mary Read even fired a shot in to the hold, killing one of the men. Their ship was easily overtaken, and the entire crew was shackled and taken to Jamaica for trial.

• Captain Jack and his crew were tried on November 16, 1720, and sentenced to hang. Anne and Mary were also tried and found equally as guilty as the men and were likewise sentenced to the gallows. But when the judge asked at their sentencing if they had anything to say, they both revealed themselves to be pregnant. Since British law forbade the killing of a pre-born child, their sentences were temporarily stayed.

• Anne was allowed to visit Rackham in prison before his execution, and her scathing rebuke lives on in history: “Had you fought like a man, you need not have been hanged like a dog!”

• Mary is said to have died of a virulent fever in prison in 1721, before the birth of her child. Other reports say she feigned death and was sneaked out of the prison under a shroud.

• No record of Anne’s execution has ever been found. Some say that her wealthy father bought her release after the birth of her child and she settled down to a quiet family life on a small

Caribbean island. Neither account has been proven.

• The story of Anne Bonny and Mary Read has fascinated people ever since their tale gained public attention in the 1700s. The notion of female pirates as romantic figures began to emerge in literature until it has now become a permanent part of pirate lore.

• Modern fictional she-pirates like Angelica, in Pirates of the Caribbean: on Stranger Tides owe their existence to Read and Bonny. In fact, it’s safe to say that Bonny and Read have had a far greater impact on popular culture than they ever had on eighteenth century shipping, commerce or piracy.

It was American industrialist Henry Ford who made the following sage obser-vation: “Whether you think that you can, or that you can’t, you are usually right.”

It took Leonardo da Vinci four years to complete his iconic painting the “Mona Lisa.”

If you’re planning a trip to the United Kingdom this summer, you might want to add a side trip to Llanfair in Wales. The town’s Welsh name is llanfairp-wllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllan-tsiliogogogoch, which means, roughly, “Saint Mary’s Church in a hollow of white hazel, close to a whirlpool and Saint Tysi-lo’s Church and near a red cave.” The sign at the railway station that has the town’s name is 20 feet long.

The next time you’re aviating in Alas-ka, keep in mind that in that state it’s il-legal to view a moose from the window of any flying vehicle.

What’s in a name? Well, a great deal, it would seem -- at least according to those trying to make it big. Joan Crawford was born Lucille La Sueur, Roy Rogers was Leonard Slye, and Dean Martin was Dino Crocetti. Issur Danielovitch (wisely) changed his name to Kirk Douglas, and Archibald Leach decided he preferred to become famous as Cary Grant.

Before 1948 on the island of Ber-muda, cars were forbidden.

You might be surprised to learn that the cowboy hat was not as widespread in the Old West as might be assumed from watching old movies. The most popular headwear on the frontier was the bowler hat. The bowler had the advantage of stability; it wouldn’t blow off in high winds. It was worn by Bat Masterson, Billy the Kid, Black Bart and Butch Cassidy. *** Thought for the Day: “The only way to get rid of a temptation is to yield to it.” -- Oscar Wilde

the time. (‘Marque’ came from the German word ‘march’ meaning border. The Letters of Marque gave the captains permission to cross international boundaries.) Generally the sponsoring government received a share of the privateer’s loot.

• Privateering reached its zenith between 1589 and 1815, when privateers acted as auxiliary members of the navy. When a particular war ended, the Letters of Marque issued for that war expired and the privateers found themselves out of work. Reluctant to give up the way of life, many of them became pirates instead and attacked whatever ships they ran across.

• During the War of 1812, privateers disregarded the rules laid down by their Letters of Marque and began attacking whatever ships they found. Because of these abuses, the Declaration of Paris, signed in 1856 by France and England, abolished privateering. This declaration later became part of general international law.

• Then there were the regular pirates, who attacked not only other ships but also any likely-looking towns on shore. The cost of operating pirate ships was often underwritten by wealthy businessmen who invested in the venture hoping to make a profit.

• Captain Kidd was licensed by the British government to capture enemy merchant ships and bring the plunder home. But one ship he preyed on was owned by rich, influential men

who had connections. They complained to King William III— the same man who had commissioned Kidd— and Kidd was tricked, trapped, and brought to trial. Evidence was withheld that would have saved him, and Kidd went to the gallows, undeserving of his reputation as an evil pirate.

• Philosopher Diogenes was captured by pirates in order to be sold into slavery. The pirate captain wanted to know if he had any trade or skills. Diogenes replied that all he knew was how to govern men. “Sell me to a man who needs a master!” he said. The pirate immediately put him to work as tutor to his two sons.

Pirate Types

A gruff old sea captain walked into a seaside tavern on the wharf and ordered a tall glass of rum from the bartender. Looking every bit the picture of a salty old pirate, he had a bushy black beard, a parrot on his shoulder, a wooden peg leg and a metal hook at the end of his arm.

After serving him the rum the bartender, thinking he must have interesting tales of the high seas to tell, decided to strike up a conversation with the salty old mariner.

“So, tell me, captain,” he asked, “how did you happen to lose your leg like that?”

“Arrrrr!” said the captain, “A rogue wave quar-tered our ship from the stern. Took us all by surprise, it did. All hands was washed off deck into the sea where the sharks was waitin’. One of ‘em took me leg clean off while another took me hand before I was able to run ‘em both through with me sword. Aye... lucky to get out alive, I was! An’ now I stumps aroun’ with a wooden leg an’ this ‘ere ‘ook.”

“Wow!” said the bartender. “That’s some story! So how did you lose your eye?”

“Seagull dung.” said the captain. “Flying over-head, it was, an’ it ‘its me square in me eye!”

“Really?” said the bartender. “But how could seagull dung cause you to lose your whole eye?”

“Arrrrgghh!” growled the captain. “It ‘appened the same day I got me ‘ook!”

• A buccaneer was a pirate who operated in the Caribbean. In the 1600s various misfits such as runaway slaves, criminals hiding out, and sailors who had deserted their ships began roaming around the island that is now Haiti. They hunted wild pigs and cattle, drying the meat to preserve it. The drying racks they used were called ‘boucans’ and this group of rag-tag men subsequently became known as buccaneers. They traded their dried meat for goods carried by ships that were heading back to Europe.

• The Spanish had claimed the island as their territory so the presence of these buccaneers was unwanted. To drive them off, the Spaniards not only murdered them whenever possible, but also slaughtered their cattle and pigs.

• Angered, the buccaneers organized a resistance and drove the Spaniards off. Not satisfied with that, the buccaneers then took their revenge to the sea, raiding every Spanish ship they could capture. Finding this profitable, they began attacking ships from other countries as well.

• The heyday of buccaneers in the Caribbean waned by the end of the 1600s as the Spanish presence in the Caribbean began to fall off.

• A privateer was essentially a pirate whose plundering was sanctioned and often underwritten by the government that the pirate worked for. Captains of privately owned boats carried documents known as Letters of Marque which officially authorized them to attack and plunder ships belonging to whatever country their homeland was warring with at

Q: One of my favorite movies is “Into the Wild.” Can you tell me what its star, Emile Hirsch, has coming up? -- Ronald W., via e-mail

A: For Emile’s latest project, he is taking on the iconic role of Clyde Barrow in the History/Lifetime/A&E joint production of “Bonnie & Clyde.” Holliday Grainger of “The Borgias” has been tapped to play Bonnie Parker, with Holly Hunter, William Hurt, Sarah Hyland, Elizabeth Reaser, Lane Gar-rison, Austin Hebert and Dale Dickey all set to co-star. The four-hour two-night event miniseries will air simultaneously on History, Lifetime and A&E, and will be directed by Os-car nominee Bruce Beresford. For those unfamiliar with the real-life events, “Bonnie & Clyde” retells the fascinat-ing tale of the couple whose crime spree enraptured the De-pression-era American public. Clyde was always able to stay one step ahead of the law as he and Bonnie escaped capture time and again. His one blind spot was Bonnie, who was intent on becoming famous, fed on the media attention and pushed Clyde to com-mit riskier and more dangerous crimes to generate bigger headlines, and make them the most famous criminals of the modern era. “Bonnie & Clyde” will air later this year. I’ll let you know the date as soon as I know. ***

Q: What has Val Kilmer been up to? I loved him in “MacGruber,” but haven’t seen him in anything lately. -- Felicia W., Atlanta

A: Aside from starring in his one-man show that he also wrote and directs called “Citizen Twain,” Val has just signed on to co-star in the IFC satire “The Spoils of Babylon,” which skewers the epic televi-sion miniseries in six half-hour episodes to air in

early 2014. Produced by Funny or Die, the original comedy also stars Will Farrell, Toby Maguire, Haley Joel Osment, Tim Robbins, Michael Sheen, Kristen Wiig and Jessica Alba. Jennifer Caserta, president and general manager of IFC, jokingly says of the project: “This amazingly talented cast will give this decadent genre its due respect. Never before has a parody of a mini-series been more poised for showers of accolades.” ***

Q: I love “Justified.” Is it coming back for another season? -- Bobbie B., Richmond, Va.

A: FX has renewed the critically acclaimed crime drama for another season. The show will pre-miere its fifth season in January 2014. In the mean-time, you can catch up on seasons one through three on DVD, and season four on Amazon Instant Video or iTunes. *** READERS: Here is the final installment of the renewed or canceled list for 2012-13 network TV shows. This week, I’ll cover NBC. On the renewed list is: “Chicago Fire,” “Community,” “Grimm,” “Hannibal,” “Law and Or-der: SVU,” “Parenthood,” “Parks and Recreation” and “Revolution.” Canceled or ending: “1600 Penn,” “30 Rock,” “Animal Practice,” “Deception,” “Do No Harm,” “Go On,” “Guys with Kids,” “The Office,” “Smash,” “The New Normal,” “Up All Night” and “Whitney.” For the complete list, head over to www.celebrityextra-online.com/p/canceled-or-renewed.html.

The Art of Consign-ment Shopping Everything I know about buying and sell-ing clothes on consignment I owe to my friend Kathleen, a remarkably well-dressed woman. She shops in consignment stores located in upscale ar-eas. And, boy, can she dress. She’s a consignment seller, too. I’ve known Kathleen to buy an outfit from one of her favorite consignment stores for a special occasion, then turn around and sell it back into consignment the next day. See what I mean? She’s very clever. The consignment process is simple. If you are a seller, the store sets its criteria for accepting merchandise, and sets the price -- usually 50 per-cent of the retail price new. Expect a consignment shop to have very high standards for what they will accept: Must be a current style, must be brought in clean and must have no visible wear, holes or stains. Now your items will be put on the sales floor and displayed for 30 to 60 days. Once sold you will receive 50 to 60 percent of the purchase price depending on that store’s policy. Recently I have fallen in love with an online consignment store, www.ThredUp.com, that spe-cializes in children’s clothing. With my 3-year old grandson, Eli, in mind I recently went online and checked it out. I was pretty much blown away, as I searched through size 4T. I’m talking designer brands in the latest styles with everything priced more like a sale at Target, not full retail at Nord-strom. An adorable Mickey Mouse jacket ($6.99) and bright yellow Izod sweater ($9.99) caught my eye. The pictures and descriptions were so clear and thorough, I had no doubt about the colors, quality and condition. I grabbed them up fast be-cause I knew they would be perfect. My first order came to $16.99 total, as I was eligible for free ship-ping on top of these rock-bottom prices. The items arrived in just three days, beautifully wrapped and just in time for “Yellow Day” at preschool. And that jacket -- what a find! It is 100 percent cotton, with a very soft, lightly quilted lining. I could not be hap-pier. ThredUp customers can also sell items on consignment to earn store credit to buy more

clothes or for cash via PayPal. ThredUp sent me a big bag with my order, inviting me to fill it up with items that meet its high standards and return it fol-lowing the printed instructions. It doesn’t get much easier than that. You know that I never recommend products and services that I do not use myself and believe in. You can add ThredUp to our EC list of reliable resources. The folks at ThredUp have kindly offered EC readers a $10 off coupon, which you can get at EverydayCheapskate.com/ThredUp. (This coupon cannot be combined with other offers and does not apply to shipping.) What a lovely gesture, ThredUp. Thanks! As soon as I put a period on this sentence, I’m calling Kathleen to tell her that ThredUp just opened its new women’s shop.

Speedier VA Claims Why would a veteran not send in all support-ing evidence at the time of filing a claim with the De-partment of Veterans Affairs? Apparently it happens, because to help get faster decisions, the VA now is setting up a new initiative, and a new acronym: FDC, for Fully Developed Claim. Until now, you’ve had a choice of different types of claims: Original Disability, New Disability, Reopened Disability, Increased Disability, Second-ary Disability and Special. Each has different re-quirements and evidence. Now veterans can “simply submit all re-quired records and documentation at the time they make their claim and certify that they have no fur-ther evidence,” according to the VA website. Veter-ans Service Officers with the American Legion and Disabled American Veterans will provide assistance. It sounds good: The FDC is an “effective way to ensure a Veteran’s claim never reaches the back-log,” says the VA, and can cut in half the time it takes to process a claim. Meanwhile, the VA has begun to prioritize claims. Veterans whose claims have been sitting for more than a year have been given provisional deci-sions so they can begin collecting compensation. They have one year to submit additional information. Additionally, overtime has been mandated to process claims for homeless veterans, the terminally ill, for-mer prisoners of war, Medal of Honor recipients -- and the Fully Developed Claims. For step-by-step instructions on creating a FDC, go online to www.benefits.va.gov/fdc/ and follow the walkthrough link on the right. Best bet: File electronically at eBenefits.va.gov. If you need to do it by paper, you’ll need VA Form 21-526EZ, available at your VA regional center. Call 1-800-827-1000 to get started and to find the lo-cation of your nearest accredited Veterans Service Officer (VSO) to help with your claim.

Cats, Dogs anD other PeoPle By Matthew Margolis

(CryptoQuip solution on page 14)

If It Looks Like a Dog... Perhaps you’ve heard the expression: If it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands. That’s writer Douglas Adams’ version, any-way. The point is, things usually are what they seem. The key is to treat them as such. This cuts to the core of our relationships with our dogs. Understanding that your dog is a dog is the solid slab of concrete on which the rest of your relationship is built. Understanding what it means that your dog is a dog is our first priority as respon-sible dog owners. The vast majority of the people who call me for help with their dog problems are actually, them-selves, the real problem. They refer to their dogs as their baby, their sweetheart, their cutie pie -- terms usually reserved for a romantic partner. And yes, women are more likely than men to anthropomorphize their dogs. Dog commands from these people sound a little something like: “Don’t do that.” “Don’t sniff there.” “Don’t you run away from me.” And none of those is decipherable to a dog. This type of dog owner calls me because they’re convinced their dog is angry that they have to go to work in the morning, or he’s upset about their upcoming move to a new city, or he’s jealous because she’s started seeing someone new. Would you ask a horse whether he was content with his new stall? Why is it any different with a dog? When most people bring a dog home, he be-comes a full-fledged member of the family. He’s lovingly welcomed into the nest, where he remains for about 15 years. As it should be. But he’s still a dog. A woman called me recently to discuss her dog, who sleeps in her bed. “Why does he growl when I move around?” she asked. Because he thinks it’s his bed. He’s no longer being treated as a dog, he’s now confused, and here comes the trouble. If you treat your dog like a dog, love your dog like a dog and train your dog to be the best dog he can be, you won’t confuse him -- or yourself. If you’re going to bring a dog into your home, into your life, you need to understand canine behav-ior. You need to educate yourself first, and then your dog, in order to bridge the communication gap. Living with a dog when you have little to no understanding of canine behavior and when neither

He becomes a surrogate child or a surrogate friend or a surrogate lover instead of the wonderful dog he is.

CASEY’S CORNER (from page 9)

CT Scan Recom-mended for Highest-Risk Patients Computerized tomography can detect po-tentially curable lung cancer, but should everyone have a CT scan? Cancer of the lung accounts for more deaths annually (159,480) than breast, colon and prostate cancer combined. The American Cancer Society estimates there will be 228,190 newly diagnosed lung cancers in 2013, almost equally divided between men and women, accounting for 14 percent of all cancer diagnoses and 27 percent of all cancer deaths. Lung cancer is almost universally fatal, unless identified in the very earliest of stages when the cancer is very small and has not spread to lymph nodes or invaded the main airways of the lung. This is referred to as Stage 1A lung cancer and is potentially curable by surgery. Even here, only 49 percent of these people live longer than five years. Sadly by the time they are diagnosed, most tumors have spread beyond Stage 1A, and the chances of surviving more than five years is less than 5 percent. Because small cancers potentially can be cured, much effort has focused on early detection in patients who are felt to be at high risk of develop-ing the disease. While the American Cancer Soci-ety does not recommend screening for people with average risk, it does recommend such screening if you are age 55 to 74, in fairly good health and either continue to smoke or have stopped smoking in the past 15 years. The criteria apply to people who are or have been heavy smokers. This is expressed as “pack years smoked,” calculated by multiplying the packs of cigarettes smoked daily by the number of years smoked. To be a candidate for screening, they should be at least a 30-pack year smoker (for example, two packs daily for 15 years). Recent research has focused on the value of performing annual, low-dose computerized to-mography (CT) scans to detect curable cancers. Compared to a regular CT scan that has a radiation exposure equivalent to between 200 and 500 X-rays, the low-dose scan has an exposure equivalent to only 15 X-rays. The low-dose CT is a rapid test, completed in less than a minute. A paper published in the New England

Journal of Medicine compared the value of screen-ing by annual lowdose CT scans in 26,715 highrisk candidates to screening an equal number by an-nual chest X-rays. A total of 292 lung cancers were diagnosed using the low-dose CT scan compared to 190 in the chest X-ray group. A total of 158 Stage 1, potentially curable cancers were identified by low-dose CT compared to 70 by chest X-ray. No question, low-dose CT scans identified more curable lung cancers. What is not known, however, is whether the downsides of the low-dose CT outweigh the potential benefits. Suspicious abnormalities were identified in 7,197 (27 percent) of patients undergoing low-dose CT scan compared to 2,387 (9.2 percent) of patients screened by chest X-ray. To confirm the di-agnosis, these patients required additional testing, including regular CT scans, more imaging studies, bronchoscopies and lung biopsies. And if the screening test is performed an-nually, risks from radiation exposure, as well as complications from invasive biopsies will increase exponentially. While costs should not be the only con-sideration, the additional tests, potential harm of irradiation and complications of lung biopsies in patients found not to have lung cancer are causes for serious concern. In addition, interpretation of low-dose CT scans in patients with significant lung problems requires a great deal of skill and experi-ence and will vary widely from center to center. Currently, the yield of curable lung cancers identified in relation to the downsides of screening is much smaller than that for breast and prostate cancer screening. Given the controversies that exist in the benefits of screening for these can-cers, much more work will be needed to refine and improve accuracy before lung cancer screening becomes widely accepted. Many hospitals are now offering low-dose CT lung cancer screenings for as little as $90 to $200. Before considering having this test, make sure you qualify as high risk and understand that a “suspicious” finding will lead to many more tests and potential risks -- not to mention the anxiety of thinking you might have lung cancer.

Social Security Benefits Not Prorated Q: It has always puzzled me why Social Security takes back a person’s Social Security check for the month he or she dies. My aunt re-cently died. And as her executor, I was count-ing on using her last Social Security check to pay off some of her bills. But the government took that money away from me. Can you ex-plain that?

A: Simply put, the law has always said that you must meet all the eligibility requirements for a Social Security benefit for an entire month to be eligible for a payment for that month. That is why Social Security benefits are paid a month in arrears (the May check is paid in June, the June check in July, etc.); to make sure a person is eligible for a ben-efit for the prior month. Obviously, one of the eligibility rules is that a person be alive. And again, you must be alive for the entire month to get the benefit for that month. So, for example, if your aunt died in May, whether it might have been May 2nd or May 30, then she (and her estate) is not due the May Social Security check. In other words, the check that comes in June (the May benefit) must be returned. Another way to put that is this: Social Secu-rity checks are not prorated. They never have been and probably never will be. But what most people don’t think about is the flip side of that coin. The law does allow a person to get their first Social Security check for the month they are due benefits, even though they might not be eligible until later in the month. For example, my brother was born on June 22. He took his benefits at age 65. And he got his first Social Security check for the entire month of June, even though he was only 65 for 8 days of the month. Think of it this way: The law presumes you’d rather have that extra benefit up front while you are alive; as opposed to your family getting the proceeds of your last check after you are dead! * * *

Q: When my father died about five years ago, my mother got the $255 burial ben-efit from Social Security. About a month ago, my father-in-law died. But his wife, my moth-er-in-law, who has been in a nursing home for

about 10 years, never got any burial money. We asked Social Security about that, and they said we are not due anything. When we asked why, all they told us is, “It’s the law.” Were they cor-rect?

A: Well, their answer was technically cor-rect. But they certainly could have done a better job of explaining the law. Before I do that, I must clarify one miscon-ception about this one-time $255 death benefit. It is not, and never was intended to be, a “burial benefit.” And good thing it isn’t because $255 would barely cover the cost of flowers at most funerals today! This death benefit is a holdover from the very earliest days of the Social Security program. It started out as a means of refunding a small portion of the taxes a person paid into the Social Security system if he or she died before having a chance to collect monthly benefits. Over the years, that simple “refund” of taxes that was paid only to the family members of non-beneficiaries morphed into a death benefit payable to the family members of just about everyone. The benefit amount was locked in at $255 about 40 years ago. Since then, it’s never gone up and has never gone down. Attempts are occasion-ally made to simply eliminate this almost worthless payment. But every time that happens, senior citizen groups inundate Congress with letters of protest and so the little death benefit remains in law. Back in the 1980s, the Reagan administra-tion did have the guts (although others would say the gall) to take on those seniors and they lobbied Congress to at least nibble away at the death benefit. They changed the law to say that the death benefit can be paid only to a surviving spouse WHO WAS LIVING WITH THE DECEASED AT THE TIME OF DEATH. Your mother-in-law was apparently not liv-ing with your father-in-law. (You said she was in a nursing home for the past decade.) So she isn’t due the money. If I was in charge of all Social Security laws, I would either play Scrooge and simply eliminate the almost worthless benefit. Or, I would play Santa Claus and raise the death benefit to $2,500 to make it more meaningful. Also, I would pay it to the next of kin or to the person who is handling the deceased estate. However, if I chose to increase the death benefit, I’d want to come up with some way to pay

for the added costs to the program. I would do that by closing the current loophole that allows well-to-do retirees to collect dependent spousal benefits be-tween age 66 and 70 before switching to their own augmented retirement benefits at age 70. This is the “restricted application” policy I have discussed many times in this column.

Atrial Flutter Puts Heart in Overdrive DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I have been diagnosed with atrial flutter. My cardiologist wants to perform a catheter ablation on me and says it’s a safe procedure. Do you agree? -- B.L.

ANSWER: Atrial flutter is a very rapid heartbeat. The atria, the two upper heart chambers, beat 260 to 300 times a minute. The lower heart chambers, the right and left ventricles, the heart’s pumping chambers, beat at half that rate, still a fast heartbeat. Atrial flutter differs from atrial fibrillation, a more common heart-rhythm disturbance, in the reg-ularity of the heartbeat. Atrial fibrillation is both an irregular and fast heartbeat. Atrial flutter is a regular and fast beat. Fatigue, lightheadedness and shortness of breath are some of atrial flutter’s symptoms. The heart can’t be allowed to sustain such rapid beating. Ablation, the destruction of heart tis-sue responsible for the speedup, is an excellent way to put an end to flutter. The heart doctor with a spe-cially equipped catheter advances this thin, pliable tube from a surface blood vessel into the heart. When the doctor has the catheter at the right position, he or she turns on radio waves that create scars in the renegade part of the atrium. The abnormal rhythm stops. The success rate is 90 percent. I wouldn’t hesi-tate for a minute to have it done. The booklet on heartbeat irregularities ex-plains the more common kinds of heartbeat distur-bances. To obtain a copy, write: Dr. Donohue -- No. 107W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and ad-dress. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Years ago, on one of the morning news shows, I heard peo-ple talking about taking a vitamin or mineral to keep mosquitoes from biting. Do you know what that is? Mosquitoes prefer my blood. I do not want to use some type of poison, like a re-pellent. -- P.J.

ANSWER: Vitamin B-1, thiamine, has been touted as a way to discourage mosquitoes from bit-ing. No proof of this exists, and I have serious doubts about this advice.

Mediterranean Diet A diet study has revealed some promis-ing news for those who are at “high vascular risk,” meaning they have a greater chance of developing Alzheimer’s disease due to high blood pressure, diabetes, hypertension, heart disease or smoking. Spanish scientists found that a Mediterranean diet can benefit cognitive function -- the ability to pro-cess thoughts -- more so than a plain low-fat diet. The participants (average age 69) were assigned different diets for six years. One, a Medi-terranean diet, included extra-virgin olive oil and mixed nuts. The results for those on that diet were “statistically significant.” It’s thought that the diet not only reduced cognitive impairment, but also slowed its progression to dementia. Additionally, heart attack, stroke and related deaths were down by 30 percent. The key ingredient: olive oil. Apparently, a chemical in olive oil (polyphenol) clears plaque buildup from the brain seen in Alzheimer’s disease. The Mayo Clinic likes the Mediterranean diet, too. Its website cites research showing that the diet was associated with reduced risk of cardiovascular mortality, cancer, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s diseases. What does the Mediterranean diet consist of? A lot of vegetables. Lots and lots of vegetables. Specifically: Plant-based foods such as vegetables and fruits -- nine servings a day Grains, rice, pasta and no-salt nuts Whole-grain bread dipped in olive oil Virgin or extra-virgin olive or canola oil instead of butter No salt -- instead use herbs and spices Red meat no more than a few times a month Fish and poultry at least twice a week Fatty fish, such as mackerel, tuna and salmon, high in omega-3. Go online for recipes or check your library for Mediterranean diet cookbooks. Ask if your doc-tor thinks this kind of diet would be appropriate for you.

Exhaled carbon dioxide attracts mosquitoes, as do other body chemicals and body heat. You don’t have to fear repellents. They aren’t poison. They don’t kill mosquitoes. They drive them away -- repel them. Ones with DEET work well. Or if you want a natural product, try Repel. It contains oil of lemon eucalyptus. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: My concern is “tan without the sun” lotions. The “bronzers” work over a period of hours. If they were simple dyes, the color change would be immediate. It isn’t. It takes hours before an effect is notice-able. Do they bring a natural skin pigment to the surface, and do they protect from the sun? -- A.R.

ANSWER: Most of these products contain dihydroacetone, which reacts with cells in the top-most layer of skin and imparts the tan hue to it. It fades as these cells are shed. The color change does not protect against sunlight. These bronzers are not skin dyes. *** Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer indi-vidual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column when-ever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.

On June 29, 1613, the Globe Theater, where most of Shakespeare’s plays de-buted, burns down. The Globe was a round wooden structure with a stage at one end, and covered balconies for the gentry. The galleries could seat about 1,000 people, with room for another 2,000 “groundlings,” who could stand around the stage.

On June 24, 1803, Matthew Thornton, one of New Hampshire’s delegates to the second Continental Congress, dies at age 89. Because he did not arrive in Philadel-phia until September, he missed the initial approval of the Declaration of Indepen-dence, but later added his signature to the document.

On June 26, 1911, athlete Mildred “Babe” Didrikson is born in Port Arthur, Tex-as. At the 1932 Olympics in Los Angeles, Didrikson won gold medals in the javelin and 80-meter hurdles. She had qualified for five events, but women were restricted to three events at the Olympics.

On June 28, 1928, a 26-year-old Louis Armstrong and his Hot Five fellow jazz in-strumentalists record a song called “West End Blues.” The technology didn’t allow for playback, so when Armstrong and his Hot Five ended their session, they hadn’t even heard the recording that is recognized as a critical influence, even on rock ‘n’ roll.

On June 30, 1936, Margaret Mitchell’s “Gone With the Wind” is published. While recovering from a series of injuries, Mitchell began writing the story of an Atlanta belle named Pansy O’Hara. A publishing compa-ny later convinced her to change the name to Scarlett.

On June 25, 1950, armed forces from communist North Korea smash into South Korea, setting off the Korean War. The Unit-ed States sprang to the defense of South Korea and fought a bloody war for the next three years. More than 55,000 American troops were killed in the conflict.

On June 27, 1976, a factory store-keeper in Sudan becomes ill and dies five days later, marking the beginning of the first Ebola virus epidemic. By the time the epi-demic was over, 284 cases were reported. Scientists still do not know what causes the disease to return or how to cure it.

Getting to Know Your Neighbors! Q: Last week, my neighbor told me that she had joined a private neighborhood safety social network offered by a computer net-work, and suggested I might also like to do so. Many widows are becoming frightened caused by increasing break-ins and robberies in our neighborhood. As I understand it, to qualify for free membership, you must reside in a geo-graphically defined neighborhood designated by the residents themselves, and members can access the website at any time and add their own thoughts, needs and information. My friend is pleased by how effective the system is working, and she says she has learned more about her neighbors than in her previous 30 years that she lived there. Have you heard of this website?

A: You are probably referring to a website named www.nextdoor.com. A number of publications, including The Wall Street Journal, have recently written articles featuring its membership benefits. The developers report their membership now totals over 200 neigh-borhoods across 26 states and is growing. Their site allows members to ask questions, help get to know one another and exchange current advice and recommendations online. A member told me she likes the service, but is cautious about entering her information for fear of the invasion of her privacy. She also avoids express-ing her political, religious and personal opinions. As membership increases, she has found scanning the web requires more and more time just to view it. The enthusiasm for this site suggests that members enjoy being able to keep up-to-date on what is going on in their community and that becom-ing involved in their neighbors lives and daily activi-ties tends to keep them safer. * * *

Q: I am a widow in my late 70s and have procrastinated for way too long about get-ting my affairs in order. I now have a major health issue, which concerns me. I have briefly discussed my assets, savings accounts, stocks and personal assets with my family, but only verbally. What’s the fastest and easiest way to take care of all these things?

A: Many families soon learn that after the

second parent dies, “World War III” often breaks out among family members. Find a reliable person through your invest-ment sources or via your family who can process your wishes legally. It will be a great help if you first make out a list or an outline before you sit down at your appointment. Based on your wishes, you will be offered many options and timetables. In many cases, it is better to choose percentages rather than actual dol-lar amounts of who inherits what because appraisal values always change. In some families, physical or mental issues may affect how you want to make your distributions. You will also want to name your execu-tor, be it a family member or other specific person whom you trust to be responsible for transferring your gifts and paying possible taxes. Both state and federal authorities always get the first checks. Getting all of the paperwork done correctly and legally can often take several months, even for relatively small estates. Your decision to start putting all of this together now is a wise one. Don’t put it off any longer!

Love at First Sight Q: I recently picked up this pair of glass cobalt blue dolphin candlesticks in Plym-outh, Mass. Even though they are reproduc-tions of Sandwich Glass Company candlesticks, I fell in love with them. Each stands 8 inches tall and 5 inches in diameter at the base. I paid $35 for the pair. Did I get a bargain or not?

A: Boston and Sandwich Glass Company and Cape Cod Glass Company, both of Sandwich, Mass., made similar dolphin candlesticks in the mid-1800s. Twentieth-century reproductions were made by several companies, including Imperial, Westmo-reland and Heisey. In addition, there were reproduc-tions that were made specifically for the Sandwich Glass Museum. Dolphin candlesticks were made in cobalt blue, clear, frosted, amber and Vaseline. Your candlesticks were made in the mid to

late 1900s. Most reproductions are in the range of $50 to $75 a pair. Yours are a bargain. * * *

Q: I have enclosed a drawing of the mark that is on a set of dinnerware that I have. The set is a five-piece place setting service for six, and it includes a platter and two bowls. The dishes are decorated with men and women in Colonial settings and trimmed in gold and fili-gree borders. What can you tell me about the age, maker and value of my set?

A: Sabin Industries made your dinnerware. They were founded by Samuel Sabin and located in McKeesport, Pa., in 1946. The “Crest-o-Gold” mark was first used in the 1950s and showed they used 22K gold in the decorations. Sabin Industries pur-chased blank pieces of porcelain that were decorat-ed by Sabin employees. Your pattern is a decal and often referred to unofficially by collectors and deal-ers as George and Martha Washington. The pattern was actually inspired by 18th century French scenes and had no connection to George and Martha. In the mid-1960s, the company was taken over by Chase Enterprises.

by Anne McCollam Creators News Service Bread, Circuses and The

Gangs of New York“ (The) people anxiously (await) for just two things: bread and circuses.” -- Juvenal, Roman poet, “Satire X”

Madison Square Garden considers itself to be the “world’s most famous arena.” That, like most anything ever said in New York City, is debatable. The Coliseum in Rome probably has a pretty good claim to the title. Of the two, one has failed to keep up with the times and suffered from eras of chronic mismanagement; the Coliseum on the other hand, though failing to install luxury boxes or widen its concourses, still ranks as a premier tourist destina-tion. But there are similarities. Paul McCartney, for instance, has played both venues to the delight of thousands. Both have provided the masses with bread and circuses, both have restrooms best described as vomitoriums, and neither has hosted a champion in years. So many greats have been shown the door in New York -- at the Garden, 57 coaches have walked out the doors in 86 years, and in their wake, only six championship banners hang from the rafters. It has long been known that any regime, even amid rampant famine and poverty, could rely on loyalty and platitudes to hold back the teeming masses for a while. A leader could not, however, hold onto power without the support of the army. Former Rangers coach John Tortorella did not heed that lesson. After barely beating the Washington Capi-tals in the opening round of the NHL playoffs, the Rangers were sent packing by the Boston Bru-ins with little effort. The Rangers power play was historically bad, and Tortorella’s immature, unpro-fessional attitude toward the media won’t soon be forgotten. But let the record show his regime ended when he derided one of his best soldiers, Carl Hagelin, at a press conference. “He stinks,” Tortorella said, stabbing him-self over and over, losing the locker room and his career as Rangers coach all at once. Tortorella called the season, one in which many had the Rangers picked to win the Stanley Cup, “a sidestep.” His general, Henrik Lundqvist, the best goalie in the NHL, disagreed. Tortorella had signed a contract extension in March. Lun-dqvist’s tour of duty was to end after this season.“It’s a step backward,” Lundqvist said after the series. And that’s where Glen Sather, the Rangers’ president and general manager, stepped in. Lun-dqvist was not going to walk. Sather came to bury Tortorella ... not to praise him. “I think he was shocked,” Sather said dur-ing the post-termination press conference.Nobody remembers Gen. George Custer as the victor at the Battle of Dinwiddie Courthouse. Joan of Arc will forever be set on fire, Napoleon will always have his Waterloo, and Caesar will always have his steps of the Roman senate. Tortorella got out of line, and he got whacked. He did it to himself. New York has too many gangsters waiting in the wings, and one of them happens to be the legendary Mark Messier, captain of the 1994 Stanley Cup Rangers squad.Because history, after all, is written by the winners.

Improve Impact with More Leverage

Many times golfers have made what they have felt to be a good backswing only to have it all fall apart by the time theyreturn back to the ball at impact. If you are experiencingsome inconsistencies through impact where you are contacting the ball thin on one shot and than fat on the next, than you will want to provide more leverage in your forwardswing to support the hands / clubface to make good contactwith the ball consistently. When I teach, I often see new students struggle their waythrough impact. They tell me that they feel stuck and cannotget through. The sign to this problem is in the lower body. They are swinging the club and failing to use the strength of the lower body to provide leverage in the forward swing.Notice in the picture as I go through impact, how my rightfoot has pushed off from the ground which sends a chainreaction up my leg into my knee. The knee, having supportfrom the foot can now provide support for the rotation of the right hip. A sign of a good swing is that the right hip rotatesthrough to the target. Most higher handicappers have a difficult time with the hip rotation because they do not provideenough support from the right foot and knee.Teaching with Motion Analysis Technology, as seen in the photo with the sensors on my body and image on the screenin the background, gives me the exact data to measure the body movements in the swing. This exact data gives me andthe student greater clarity and precision in making the necessary adjustments to create a faster more effective result.

Improve impact with moreleverage Many times golfers will make what they feel is a good backswing only to have it all fall apart at the point of impact. If you experience the incon- sistency of making thin, then fat ball contact, you probably need more leverage in your swing. I often see new students struggle their way through impact, saying they feel stuck and can’t get through. The key to this problem is in the lower body. They are failing to use the strength of their legs for the leverage they need in the forward swing. Notice in the photo how my right foot has pushed up giving sup-port to my knee, which now provides support for the rotation of the right hip. The sign of a good swing is that the right hip rotates through to the target. Most high handicappers have a difficult time with hip rotation because they simply don’t provide the leverage that’s needed from both the right foot and knee. Teaching with Motion Analysis Technology, as shown in the photo, uses body sensors and an animated image display to provide precise data for the instructor to analyze. By measuring exact body movements during the swing, it is easy to identify and correct improper movements quickly and with considerable accuracy.

STAN SMITH’S TENNIS CLASS

moved sluggishly in the water, so they needed to be cleaned regularly, especially if they were pirate ships that needed speed to outmaneuver their victims. The boat would be tilted on its side to be scraped, repaired, and re-caulked. ‘Careening’ has now come to mean oblique lurching or swerving while in motion.

• Coins could once be cut into pieces to make change. A full coin could be broken into eight bits. Two bits equaled a quarter of the whole coin. That’s how pirates got pieces of eight and England got the halfpenny and the farthing, which was originally ‘four things’ or a fourth of a penny.

• After the discovery that vitamin C in lemons, oranges, and limes is a cure for scurvy, sailors were supplied with citrus fruits during voyages, leading to their nickname, ‘limeys.’

• Booty comes from the German root ‘bute’ meaning ‘exchange.’

NANCY’S PAPERS• In the 1700s, an American ship called the

Nancy was suspected of pirating and of running Britain’s blockade of France. Cornered in the Caribbean, the captain of the Nancy tossed incriminating logbooks and papers into the sea just before being captured. The captain and crew of the Nancy were taken to Britain to stand trial. However, without the ship’s papers, there was no evidence. Just then a second British ship sailed into port, bringing with them the Nancy’s papers. They had found the ship’s records in the belly of a shark they caught off Haiti. The captain of the Nancy was convicted and hung. The papers were placed in a maritime museum with a plaque telling the tale.

ENDANGERED SIGHTS & SOUNDS (cont’d):• How long has it been since you’ve used a

typewriter eraser? Or, if you’re younger, have you moved your belongings into a long-unused desk, only to find a strange-looking gadget with fiber-like hairs bushing out of one end? What you’ve found is a typewriter eraser. Usually shaped like a pencil, the tip was made of an especially-abrasive rubber, which was used to “erase” the typing error. The other end featured a small brush made of stiff plastic strands that was used to sweep the remnants of the erasure off the page.

• There’s no shortage of litter on the ground to-day, but thankfully, we no longer see discarded pull-tabs. The tabs on older easy-open beverage cans pulled completely off the can. People who walked in bare feet were constantly dodging these carelessly-dropped metal hazards.

• The rhythmic “beep” of the scanner is the musical accompaniment to the supermarket checkout line. But if you’ve ever wondered where the cliché of saying “ka-ching!” in re-lation to money comes from, that’s the sound that the old-style electric, not electronic, cash registers made. Cashiers of that era had to manually punch a series of buttons to ring up your purchase, followed by a smack of the “total” button with the heel of the hand.

• “Do you want your carbons?” used to be an automatic question asked by merchants after you’d signed for a credit card payment. At that time, credit card receipts were filled out by hand in triplicate, with a small piece of carbon paper inserted between each sheet. It didn’t take long for thieves to realize they could retrieve the used carbons from the trash and steal valuable credit card information. Once that scam gained popularity, waiters and cashiers regularly of-fered the carbons to customers, giving them the opportunity to destroy them.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN FROM TIDBITS!

SCARY MOVIESby Ryan Toepfer

Some people just seem to love having the living daylights scared out of them. Why else would horror and suspense movies be so popular? To celebrate Halloween, Tidbits goes behind the scenes of some classic thrillers.• When Alfred Hitchcock purchased the film

rights for Psycho, he also bought up as many copies of the original novel as he could find, hoping to keep the story’s ending a secret.

• The famous shower scene of Psycho was filmed using a double for Norman Bates, as Anthony Perkins was appearing in a play (Greenwillow)in New York at the time. The first time Perkins actually saw that scene was back at the studio, watching the daily “rushes,” and he said he was just as scared as everyone else.

• Take a close look at Michael Myers’ mask in the 1978 camp classic Halloween. Does the face look familiar? The movie was filmed on such a tight budget, that the prop department had to make do with what they had. For Myers’ disguise, they used an old Captain Kirk (StarTrek) mask, which they spray painted white and then re-shaped the eyeholes.
