The year's half-way mark foundHMCS Magnificent il). Europeanwaters where, for eight days in thelatter part of June, she had takenpart in Exercise Castanets, the largestinternational manO'uvres held sincethe war. The NATO exercise wasdesigned to test the ability of the airand sea forces of North AtlanticTreaty countries to co-operate in'protecting trade. in the' easternAtlantic, English Channel and NorthSea.

Ships and aircraft of nine NATOnations took part. These included abattleship, five aircraft carriers, threecruisers, three minelayers, 45 des­troyers and escorts, over 70 mine­sweepers, numerouS small craft andabout 400 aircraft.

More than 100 warships and navalauxiliaries were provided by NATOcountries to act as ships in convoy,and ship owners co-operated byflying special signals in suitable fastships in the area to mark them asindependently routed ships open toattack by the "enemy".

An ash tray made from the casing of thefirst shell fired by Canadian forces in theKorean war was presented to Prime MinisterSt. Laurent, May 19, by Vice-AdmiralE. R. Mainguy, Chief of the Naval Staff, onbehalf of the RCN. The shell from which thea~h tray was made was fired August 15, 1950,by HMCS Cayuga. (0-2290).

The "enemy" was a formidableone, well supplied with all knownweapons of attack against shipping­submarines and E~boats for' torpedoattacks; surface ships, aircraft andsubmarines forminelaying; land andcarrier-based strike aircraft, and sur­face raiders.

Following Exercise Castanets, theMagnificent sailed from PortsmouthJuly 1 for Malta, where she was tojoin the Royal Navy's MediterraneanFleet for exercises lasting until August20. She will return to U.K. watersfor a month of further exercisesbefore returning to Halifax aboutOctober 7.

The Magnificent was accompaniedto Plymouth in June by HMCSHaida, the destroyer then returning toHalifax.

Nootka Has Close Callin Duel with Reds

Canadian destroyers in Koreanwaters were more than usually activein the latter part of May and firstpart of June.

HM CS Nootka had a particularlywarm time of it. She had, in fact,the narrowest escape from battlescars of any of the Canadian shipsthat have operated ,in the war zone.

On May 30, while shooting uptargets in the Chongjin area, far upthe east coast of Korea, the Nootkaand the USS Thomason (destroyerescort) came under heavy, accuratefire from shore batteries:

The Reds' first salvoes landed closeby the N'ootka and succeeding broad­sides continued to bracket andstraddle her as she turned to seawardto, open the range. One salvo landedso close on the port side that waterwas thrown over the bridge and alookout and two of "A" gun's loadingnllmbers had their helmets blown oft.

Within the time it took the Nootkato steam out of range, an estimated150 shells landed in close 'vicinity tothe. ship, about 15 salvoes comingwithin 20 yards and 40 within 200.The upper deck Was sprayed withshell fragments, some up to eightinches in length, but, fortunately,damage was negligible and therewere no casualties.

Through all this, the Nootka's "X"gun had been answering the Redswith broa.dsides at the rate of oneevery four seconds. Then, after with­drawing a.nd assessing the situation,the destroyer headed straight back inthrough a fog and rain bank andturned her full main armament onthe batteries.

The ship's gunners saturated thebattery positions with shelHire, thistime without practically any op­position. Only three enemy roundswere fired in reply and all were short.

On this patrol, the Nootka carriedout almost dally bombardments asshe ranged from the' "bombline"almost to the far northern border ofKorea. Industrial areas and com­munications, the latter including raillines, bridges, truck convoys andwater transport, were her principaltargets.

On the west coast, the Athabaskanwas equally active, shelling' troopconcentrations, gun positions, build­ings and other targets. During thepatrol, the Athabaskan worked with avariety of UN ships - British, Ameri­can, New Zealand and South Korean- and with aircraft of the USN.

Iroquois, CrusaderArri,Je in Far East

Two Canadian destroyers arrivedin the Far East in June. The firstwas HMCS Iroquois, taking theplace of the Cayuga. She was followeda week later by HMCS Crusader,relieving the Athabaskan.

Both the Halifax-based Iroquoisand Esquimalt-based Crusader areserving in the Far East for the firsttime..

Cayuga Comes Homewith Proud Record

Just five days less than a year fromthe day she sailed, HMCS Cayugareturned to Esquimalt, June 14, fromher second tour of operations in theKorean theatre. She was greeted atthe jetty by some 500 friends andrelatives of the destroyer's company.

The Cayuga's actual time in thewar theatre lasted from July 1951to May 1952. During that period herduties consisted mostly of carrierescort and inshore patrols, with theemphasis on the latter.

Statistically speaking, she steamed53,045 miles and spent 233 days atsea in the operational area; fired6,153 rounds at the enemy f(om herfour-inch guns and 3,683 rounds fromher Bofors; carried out 40 oilingoperations at sea and made 40 seatransfers.

The Cayuga was fired on by shorebatteries on three different occasionsand by heavy machine guns severalother times. Her motor cutter alsocame under machine gun and riflefire. Several hundred rounds werefired at her but the Cayuga wasnever hit, although several nearmisses occurred.

On the Cayuga's arrival in Japanlast July her captain, CommanderJames Plomer, took over the duties ofCommander Canadian DestroyersFar East. The Cayuga was soonplaying a leading part in the defenceof UN-held islands off the west coastof North Korea and later was chosento organize and head the defence of anumber of islands against the threatof invasion.

Assistance was given by the Cana­dian sailors to refugees and others.During the bitterly cold winter,members of the ship's company sup­plied ill-clad islanders with clothing,some of which was charged to in­dividual men and would eventuallymean a fair sum of money out of theirown pockets.

After River CruiseQuebec goes to U.K.

HM CS Quebec for the first timevisited the province whose name shebears when she made calls at Sorel,Quebec City and Montreal in June.

Her visit at Sorel coincided with acall there by the USS Samuel B.Roberts (destroyer) and both shipslanded guards for the internationalgun presentation ceremonies held June14 by Sorel Industries Ltd.

The Quebec was boarded at Halifaxby the Cornwallis band, which tookpart, along with a guard from theQuebec, in ship-naming ceremoniesfor HM CS Labrador (Arctic patrolvessel) and HMCS Chignecto (coastalminesweeper), qS well as other cere­monies during the day. The bandremained with the cruiser for thevisits to Quebec City and Montreal.

The stay at Quebec City lastedfrom June 15 to June 20 and theQuebec was in Montreal from theafternoon of June 20 to the morningof June 25. Band concerts and Sunsetceremonies were presented in bothcities.

The St. Lawrence River cruiseended with a visit, June 26-29, toCornerbrook, Nfld., where the staywas a day longer than originallyplanned so the Quebec could bepresent for Newfoundland Remem­brance Day services. She arrived backin Halifax on June 30.

On July 4 the Quebec is due to sailon a three-week training cruise tothe United Kingdom, putting inbriefly at Portsmouth on July 10,and spending July 11-21 at Chathambefore returning to Halifax.

A second summer training cruisefor the Quebec, August 7-22, willinclude calls at Digby,N.S.; BarHarbor, Maine, and Argentia, Nfld.

One 'Sweeper Launched,Keels of Two Laid

of the Canadian Industrial Prepared­ness Association during the past fewyears, the ·special functions stagedby the Royal Canadian Navy atHalifax, highlighted by a day at seaon board the aircraft carrier Magnifi­cent, will occupy a foremost place.

One hundred and ten industrialists,from many parts of Canada, werepresent at Halifax on May 19 and 20.They were afforded a particularlyfine opportunity to familiarize them­selves with many phases of the Navy'swork, at sea, on land and in the air,and at the same time discuss problemspeculiar to their particular businesswid). the operational forces, and thepersons who keep them operational.

With no routine association busi­ness on the program, the entire twodays were elevoted to seeing, factfinding and "talking shop", revolvingaround Navy, industrialists, andgovernment officials in attendance.In all probability, no previous gather­ing of the CIPA has provided suchan excellent opportunity to bringthese groups together, and enable

them to hold discussions on theirspecialized subjects.

From the moment the group boar­ded the 694-foot, 17,nO-ton aircraftcarrier Magnificent (Captain K. L.Dyer) at 7 :45 a.m. on the morningof May 19, until they trooped downthe gangplank at 7 :00 p.m., there wasnothing but· unflagging interest andenthusiasm for what they saw and.heard. They were welcomed aboard,9-nd duly briefed, by Rear-AdmiralR. E. S. Bidwell, Flag Officer AtlanticCoast, before ascending to the flightdeck, where they were afforded anexcellent view of Halifax harbourand installations as the ship headedfor the open sea.

Following astern, delegated to par­ticipate in the naval exercises, werethe six-inch gun cruiser HMCS Que­bec, which during the war yearsserved with the Royal Navy andRoyal Canadian Navy as the cruiserUganda; the destroyer HMCS Cres­cent, and the frigate HMCS LaHulloise. The Royal Navy submarineAlcide, which had been engaged intraining exercises with the RCN, andwas to continue to Bermuda, was

scheduled to participate later in theday, but 'fog concentration towardmid-day necessitated abandonmentof her torpedo attacks.

Staged a' "Shooting War"Once clear of the Nova Scotian

coastline, in calm and sunny weather,the Navy launched a series of spec­tacular mancpuvres, on sea and in theair, which kept the industrial groupcontinuously interested. As a com­mentator on the public address systemkept his audience informed as towhat was transpiring, the Crescentinaugurated the program by demon­strating the "hedgehog" anti-sub­marine projector, firing a salvo whichlaid down a broad circular patternand prod uced delayed underwaterexplosions. This was followed bydropping of depth charges astern.

In the meantime the 30th· AirCarrier Group, under the commandof Lieut.-Cdr. (P) R. A. B. Creery,based in the Magnificent and con­sisting of 881 Squadron (15 Avengeraircraft) and 871 Squadron (11 SeaFury fighters), was being marshalledfor take-off. The figh ters were launchedfrom the forepart of the deck bycatapult, while the Avengers followedinto the air via normal flight decktake-off.

On shore, at this time" at thenaval air station at Dartmouth, the31st Support Air Group, under Lieut.­Cdr. (P) J. B. Fotheringham andconsisting of a squadron of Avengersand a squadron of Sea Furies, wasstanding at readiness. When the LaHulloise dropped a drogue into thewater, and towed it from safe dis­tance, it was the signal for the airmento swing into attack. In dive bombingruns, the Sea Furies and Avengersshowed fine marksmanship as theynosed down towards the drogue athigh speed, firing their rocket pro­jectiles, cannon and machine gunswith telling effect. Other Avengersfollowed up by laying sticks ofdepth charges across the target:

Lieut. Roger Harris made decklandings and take-offs look compara­tively easy, as he carried out a series·of circuits in an Avenger for thebenefit of his audience and make

. four landings within a space of 15minutes.

His performance was followedby a remarkable exhibit of aerobaticsby Lieut. Ron Heath in a Sea Fury,the fastest piston.engine aircraft inexistence. Diving and climbing, mak·ing slow rolls, loops, flying upsidedown, and practically skimming thesea, he kept the onlookers spellboundwith his ability to handle the fastfighter.

While fog banks closed in on theexercises, and curtailed a certainamount of activity, they in no waymarred the demonstration. CIPAmembers, assembled in groups of ten,were cond ucted to various parts ofthe ship by the Magnificent's officersand were given a thorough glimpse ofcarrier operatio ns.

"Beat Up" From the Air

During the afternoon, the navalfliers put on a spectacular demon·stration, with four squadrons beingin the air at one time. For a sustainedperiod they staged dive bombingruns at the naval craft, singly and information, and wound up with asplen·didly executed fly-past.

As a final manreuvre, before point.ing towards Halifax late in the day,the Quebec drew alongside the Magni­ficent, a line was passed, and a cross­water transfer of stores and personnelwas carried out between the twovessels.

Following a day at sea, the dele­gates on the 20th were transported bybus around Bedford Basin to theDartmouth side. First they visited theaircraft plant, at the water's edge, ofFairey Aviation, as guests ofC. E.Hibbert. This was followed by avisit to HMCS Shearwater, the navalair station, where they were welcomed

and briefed by Captain D. L. Ray­mond, commanding officer. A tourof the base followed, training pro­cedure on deck take-offs were demon­strated on the airfield, and the groupwitnessed a flying demonstration of aSikorsky helicopter newly acquiredby the RCN.

After lunch in the Shearwaterofficers' mess, the party moved on toHMCS Stadacona, where an inspec­tion of the barracks and navaltraining schools was carried out.The tour ended with a visit to HalifaxShipyards Limited, On the invitationof R. J. R. Nelson, where the groupinspected the shipbuilding, repairingarid refitting facilities.

As a fitting close to two days wellspent in inter-change of informationand obtaining first-hand impressionsof the Navy at work, the CIPAtendered a reception and dinnerfor naval officers and other guests atthe Nova Scotian hotel. It wasattended by 131 persons. Speecheswere not on the agenda, but words ofwelcome were offered by PresidentJames C. Armer, of Toronto, who wasin the chair. A toast to the Navy wasproposed by T. Rodgie McLagan,Montreal, vice·president of the CIPA,which was replied to by Rear-Admiral

GlrHE Canadian Naval Service-JIL Benevolent Trust Fund camewithin $460 of breaking even on its1951 operations, thanks to in"creasedrevenue from investments and todonations from ships, establishmentsand individuals.

Engineer Rear-Admiral G. L. Ste­phens, RCN, R~t'd, who was electedpresident for a fifth term at theannual meeting held May 12 atNaval Headquarters, said this" hadbeen achieved without any change inthe policy of the fund with respect toextending assistance." Financial· aid to serving and formernaval perso~nel and their depen<;lentstotalled $105,415, made up of $47,409"in grants and $58,006 in loans (1950figures: $57,263 and $51,895). Theaudited balance sheet showed a sur-

. plus of $5,173, but this did not take

into account grants of $5,554 whichhad Qeen authorized but not paid as "of December 31.

"While the financial situation hasso improved," Admiral Stephens said,"I must point out there is no roomfor complacency, but that the fullco-operation of everyone is ne~essary,

not only to continue this supportbut to increase it.

"We are still living in what may beconsidered fairly good times in Canadaand any adverse change in thatsituation might create a very heavydrain on the fund. .The executivecommitte1e will continue to do itsbest not only to administer the fundbut to obtain increased donationsfrom every possible source."

Admiral Stephens. said donationswere $10,077 in 1951 as "against$5,706 in 195d, an encouraging in­crease.

'.'Nor do these figures present apicture of the increase, as donationsfrom personal allotments by RCNpersonnel only came into effect in thelatter part of the year and shouldhave far greater effect on this year'sdonations."

The meeting was told that 719applications for assistance had beenreceived during 1951. Of these, 55treceived financial aid, either in theform of grants or loans.

Many of the rest were assisted infinding employment or were advisedon how to solve their own problems byproper budgeting of their incomes.

In· other cases, the problems weresuch that they could be best handled

through governmental and social wel­fare agencies. Applicants, often una­ware that help could be had from thesesources; were put iIi touch with themby the fund.

The fund's invested capital at theend of the. year was $2,531,500,having be"en boosted to this figureby the receipt of $1,379,710 in navalprize money.

Yearly interest on invested capitalas of December 31 was $66,670 butdue to changes in investments sincethat date has been increased to

He emphasized that the fund didnot belong to the board of directors orexecutive members of the fund, butto every member and ex-member ofthe Navy. '

"We are your elected representa­tives to administer the fund- volun­tarily, freely and devotedly doingthe best we know how to carry outthe fund's policy.

"But it belongs to the individualwho should feel, in honour bound, tobe interested ,in it and support it tothe best of his ability."

The annual meeting paid honor tothe rilemories of the late AdmiralP. W. Nelles, former Chief of NavalStaff and a past president of thefund, and of the late Air Marshal A.Edwards, president of the RoyalCanadian Air Force Benevolent Fund.

Flown From Far EastTo Attend Meeting

The Canadian destroyers servingin the Far East were well representedat the annual meeting of the CanadianNaval Service Benevolent Trust Fund.

CPO D. H. Nelson, of HMCSCayuga, attended in his capacity as adirector of the fund and, at themeeting, was elected a vice-president.

PO J. E. Radley, also of the Cayuga,attended as official representative ofthe destroyer group, and CPO R.Whaley was on hand from HMCSAthabaskan.

All three were flown to Canada inorder to be present at the meeting andreport back on what took place.

Chief Petty Officer John M. Turner,29, of Edmonton ,and Halifax, whohas served as a naval photographersince June 1943, has been promotedto the rank of Acting CommissionedOfficer (SB).

Born in Edmonton, Mr. Turnerentered the RCN in June 1941 as anordinary seaman and took his earlytraining at Esquimalt. After twoyears in the seaman branch, he trans­ferred to photographic duties whileserving at Cornwallis.

Ships in Far EastVisited by CNP

Praise for the cheerful spirit andfighting efficiency of the Canadianforces serving- in the Korean theatrewas expressed by Commodore J. C.Hibbard, Chief of Naval Personnel,on his return to Ottawa from a visitto the Canadian destroyers in thewar zone in May.

Commodore Hibbard was at sea inthe Canadian ships as they carriedout operations on the west coastof Korea; vis ited the 25th CanadianInfantry Brigade in the field and heldconversations with United Nationsauthorities in Tokyo and Sasebo.

The purpose of his visit was toobtain first band knowledge of theconditions under which the Canadiandestroyers were operating. Accom­panying him was his executive assist­ant, Commander (S) S. A. Clemens.

Commodore Hibbard found thatthe men were taking great pride in thework being done by their ships, whichwere frequell.tly seeing action andcoming under fire, were interceptingenemy shipping and were denying·the use of fishing waters to the com­munists. Much of their time was spentin confined waters where navigationalhazards were "very numerous andvery real."

In between his visits aboard theships, Commodore Hibbard flew fromInchon to 25th Brigade Headquarters,from where he was taken by thebrigade commander, Brigadier P. M.Bogert, pn a tour of the Canadians'front line sector.

Commodore Hibbard also wentaboard a small patrol craft of theSouth Korean Navy which was work"ing with the Cayuga. He met hercaptain, inspected her crew and wastold how this and other ships of theSouth Korean Navy had teamed with

Commodore Hibbard had highpraise for the South Korean navalmen, who, he said, were showinggreat skill and fighting qualities inspite of limited resources. He wasimpressed with the close co-operationbetween the South Korean Navy andthe RCN destroyers.

Commissioned Officer Oakley served

in the RCNVR from 1941 to 1946.He became a leading sick berth at­tendant in 1944 and re-entered thenaval service in 1947 in that rank.

Since then he has served in theweather patrol ship St. Stephenand in the RCN Hospital at Halifax.He was promoted to petty officer in1948.

The Ladies' Auxiliary to the RoyalCanadian Navy (Reserve) in Windsor,ant., recently completed its project

'of furnishing a room at the EssexCounty Sanatorium. The auxiliaryalso presented two cheques of $50 eachto the sanatorium for upkeep of theroom.

The furniture and cheques wereturned over to Dr. H. E. Robertson,superintendent of the sanatorium,by Mrs. Ellen Treanor, treasurer of theauxiliary, and Mrs. Ethel Gunnell ofthe auxiliary's ,sick committee. A navyveteran, William C. Chief Petty Officer Hugh K.MacLean, -14, of Pugwash and Dart­mouth, N.S., has been promoted tothe rank of Acting CommissionedOrdnance Officer.

Formerly a machinist with HalifaxShipyards, Mr. MacLean entered theRCNVR in 1942 as an Acting Ord­nance Artificer, fourth class.

During the Second World War, heserved in Cornwallis, Stadacona andthe destroyer Iroquois and receivedtraining with the Royal Navy.

In September 1945, Mr. MacLeantransferred from the reserve to theRCN and has since served in HMCShips Huron, Qu'Appelle, Haida,Nootka and La Hulloise.

Prior to commencing an officers'divisional course at Cornwallis onJune 6, he was attached to the Orcl­nance School at' Esquimalt.

Ord. Sea. Harry Voth came upwith a novel way to spend a leaveperiod granted him on graduatingfrom a communications radio courseat the CommullicationsSchool in May.

Though he had just finished 26weeks of instruction, Ord. Sea. Vothapplied for fUL-ther training, this timeas a parachutist at the CanadianJoint Air Training Centre, Rivers,Man. As parachute training was notpart of his career curriculum, Vothtook the course during his leave.

Twenty-foul' cadets from CanadianUniversity Naval Training Divisionsparticipated ina two-week amphi­bious operations course held in Vir­ginia last month for 920 midshipmenfrom the Uni1:ed States Naval Aca­demy, Annapolis, .and 680 cadetsfrom the U.S. Military Academy,'Vest Point.

The course was conducted June9 to 21 at the Amphibious TrainingCommand, Little Creek, Norfolk,Virginia.

The participation of the Canadianswas arranged through the NavalMember of the Canadian Joint Staff,Washington, at the invitation of the

. United States Department of theNavy. The first eight days weretaken up with shore training con­sisting of lectures, demonstrations,movies and ddls.

Climax of the course was a realisticamphibious assault from sea, in whichships of the U_S. Navy and aircraft ofthe Navy, Marine Corps and AirForce assisted the cadets and mid­shipmen as they actually conductedthe approach and assault.

GlIIHE name of a famous, almostJJL legendary Indian chief is per­

petuated by HM CS Malahat.Serving in the Victoria naval divi­

sion is another "chief" whose namehas become almost synonymous withMalahat and its activities. He isChief Petty Officer Walter Burch,who officially is coxswain of thedivision and unofficially is its jack­of-all-trades.

CPO Burch has been connectedwi th the Navy for a long time.Born in Selkirk, Manitoba, December11, 1911, he entered the RCNVRdivision at VVinnipeg in December1929. However, it might come as asurprise to his many friends ·to learnthat he had worn the King's uniformbefore that - as a member of theCanadian Army.

In those days it was possible formembers of school cadet corps totake training with army units, andthis Burch did, first wi th the 10thMachine Gun Regiment, then withthe Fort Garry Horse.

On reaching his 18th birthday,however, he switched to the Navy andjoined the "VRs" as an ordinary

. seaman. He took his annual trainingat Esquimalt and in 1931 was pro­moted to able seaman and took hisseaman torpedoman's course.

Burch got his first real taste of lifeat sea on board HMCS Vancouver,subsequently served in the Armen­tieres and Slceena and in 1938 waspromoted to leading seaman.

With the outbreak of war, the re­serves changed from part-time tofull-time sailors .and in the first draftof men to leave Winnipeg for activeservice, on September 3, 1939, wasLdg. Sea. Burch.

That was a memorable day forhim in more ways than one, for notmany hours earlier Ldg. Sea. Burchand Miss Evelyn Borland of Winnipegexchanged marriage vows.

Burch served for a time in Naden,then in the examination vessel Can­colin, operating out of Prince Rupert.

When HMCS Agassiz became thesecond corvette to commission on theWest Coast, in January 1941, Burchwas one of her crew. He sailed in herto Halifax and thence to St. John's,Nfld., where she became one of thepioneer escort ships working out of

that port on the North Atlanticconvoy run.

In August 1942 he left the Agassiz- having been promoted to pettyofficer in the meantime - and wentback to the West Coast for instruc­tional duties. Then came a draft toHMCS Provider, Fainnile depot ship.While serving on board her he waspromoted to chief petty officer andwas awarded the Long Service andGood Conduct Medal (the bar towhich he has since received).

Leaving the Provider in September1945, Burch was demobilized atNaden two months later.

But once a sailor, always a sailor,and in September 1947, shortly afterMalahat was re-established on apeacetime basis, he en tered the activereserve at the Victoria division.

Subsequently, the "chief" addedto his sea-time with service aboardthe Charlottetown, Ontario and SaultSte. Marie. (The latter ship nowserves as training tender for Malahat).

In November 1950 he resumedfull-time service with the Navy,joining Malahat on continuous navalduty. There, besides serving as cox-

swain, he has helped out the recruitingstaff and has called on his experienceto assist practically every branch ofthe division.

His numerous undertakings includethe job of official projectionist, cap­taincy of Malahat's rifle team anddirector of all activities on the smallarms range.

A marksman of note, CPO Burchhas taken top honors in Malahat'sannual indoor rifle shoot for fourconsecutive years. His average for thecontest just ended was 96.5.

It is he, too, who gets the ballrolling on practically every socialevent held by the division. Whetherit's the children's Christmas party, adance, a picnic or a film evening-youcan be sure the "chief" is· one of thebusiest members of the organizingcommittee.

CPO Burch comes from a "service"family. His father was overseas withthe 43rd Cameron Highlanders in theFirst World War and, during theSecond, came out of retirement towork in the dockyard at Esquimalt.For many years the "chief's" motherhas been an active member of theRed Cross and the Navy League inWinnipeg.

During the Second World War,an older brother, Harold, servedoverseas with the RCAF and ayounger brother, Gerald, was in thenavy. A third brother, John, was amember of the RCNVR in Winnipegfor some time prior to the war.

CPO and Mrs. Burch have twochildren - Patricia, ten, and Barry,five.

Early this year the Sunday maga­zine section of a Victoria newspapercarried a story dealing with CPOBurch. Its introduction would makean adequate conclusion to this ac­count. It read as follows:

"It is said there are only two thingsof which we can be sure in thistroubled world - death and taxes.

"But personnel of HMCS Malahat,Victoria's naval division, can be sureof something else - if you want anyinformation about the unit, you willget it from Chief Petty OfficerWalter Burch. If he doesn't know- and that is most unlikely - hewill find out, and he will have the datagathered, or the job done, in a hurry."

W HEN the sailor swung downfrom -the train at midnight, he

hadn't the slightest idea where hewould find his new ship. Anotherseaman, spotted in the waiting crowd,put him on t~e right course.

"She's out of port for the night,"he said, "but, come morning, you'llfind her tied up at the Slater Streetjetty. "

And the newcomer did. He foundthe good ship HMCS Bytown welland firmly moored in the AylmerBuilding on Slater Street, in theheart of Ottawa. That was 1942.Since then Bytown has made severalshifts, but all within a limited radius.Now she is berthed on the fourthfloor of "A" building at NationalDefence Headquarters.

She's an odd craft, whatever wayyou look at her. Imagine a ship witha vice-admiral, four rear-aamirals,commodores, captains and on downserving under the command -of alieutenant-commander; with some ofher ship's company carrying out theirduties hundreds or even thousands ofmiles away; with a complement of400-odd but only about 30 of them- enough to sail a small mine­sweeper- working the ship. That'sBytown.

Of couri;je, much of the foregoing isjust theory. CO Bytown would bebrash indeed if he tried to orderaround some of the people borne onhishooks for pay.

-Carleton, the Ottawa naval division.The real Bytowners are the two

officers and 30 men who carry outthe routine duties of the establish-

ment. But Bytown has a flexiblenominal list of men which maysuddenly soar as high as 80 when,for example, the precision squadarrives in town for training or forduty.

Bytown is responsible for all navalstores at headquarters but thesedon't amount to very much. Her menpoint out, with loud moans, that thenearest "slops" is 1,200 miles away,with the result that keeping one's kitup to scratch is something of aproblem.

One offshoot of this responsibilityfor naval stores is that Bytown hasthe odd sideline of ordering equipmentto be- used as pilot models by manu­facturers filling contracts for theRoyal Canadian Navy.

Bytown's pay office is a busy spot,but it handles no cash. Headquarterspersonnel are all paid by cheque.

The master-at-arms office bears upbravely under a barrage of demandsfrom the directorates at headquarters.The men there look after requests fortransportation, the drafting of men toand from Bytown and the enforcementof regulations concerning dress anddeportment. They also help navalpersonnel to find suitable accommoda­tion for themselves and families inOttawa.

Among those who are on Bytown'sbooks but are not connected with the"ship's" functions is a group of menon whom this magazine relies for muchof its content. They are the photo­graphers who, from negatives receivedfrom ships and stations, produce manyof the pictures appearing in TheCrowsnest.

That is only a small part of theirjob, however. Still shots, movies,lithographs and photostats are turnedout in answer to a wide variety ofrequirements.

Nearest thing to sea-going sailors onBytown's complement are the menwho work for the Canadian ArmedForces Identification Bureau on Vic­toria Island in the Ottawa River.But even they -cross the Ottawa bybus and bridge rather than boat.

Most widely travelled of the By­towners are the members of theElectrical Engineer-in-Chief's main­tenance team, who go from divisionto division keeping electrical andelectronic training gear in workingorder.

Historically, the name Bytownstems from the original name ofOttawa which, in turn, honoredLieut.-Col. John By, who hacked theRideau Canal through the wildernessfrom Kingston to the Ottawa River acentury and a quarter ago.

Bytown's crest - a rudder ancienand maple leaf - well signifies herfunction, that of steering the RoyalCanadian Navy.

A new British aircraft catapultwhich is regarded as one of the mostimportant developments for navalaviation since the Second World Warwill be adapted for use on U.S. air­craft carriers.

Nicknamed the "steam slingshot",the steam powered catapult provedin recent tests that it can hurl theU.S. Navy's jet fighters into the aireven when the carrier is headed downwind or alongside a dock.

Tests of the catapult installed inthe Royal Navy carrier, HMS Perseus,were conducted at the U.S. NavalShipyard, Philadelphia, the NavalOperating Base, Norfolk, and at seaduring January, February and March.

First installation will be made onboard the USS Hancock, an Essexclass carrier which is undergoing acomplete modernization.

In adapting this experimental cata­pult for its own aircraft carriers, theUSN will modify it as necessary formanufacture in the United States.

As installed for trials purposes inthe Perseus, the catapult lies in araised section of the flight deck, withcompressors and other machinery onthe hangar deck. Developed for the

Royal Navy by Messrs. BrownBrothers & Co., Ltd., Edipburgh,the catapult uses the principle of theslotted cylinder, and ha~ no rams orpurchase cables. A hook on the air­craft to be launched is connecteddirectly to a piston which is drivenalong the cylinder by high pressuresteam from the ship's boilers. Anovel sealing device is used to keepthe slotted cylinder steam tight.

While the amount of steam re­quired for sustained operation islarge, the tests have shown that theboilers can meet the demand withoutinterfering with ship operations.

During the American tests, theUSS Greene, a destroyer, suppliedsteam to the catapult at pressureshigher than were available in HMSPerseus to see if the capacity of thecatapult could be increased. It wasfound readily adaptable to the higherpressures.

In all, 140 test launchings weremade using deadweights and thelatest type carrier aircraft. Previouslythe British had fired 126 pilotedaircraft and 1,000 deadweights overa 14-month period.

Korea Flying RecordFollows 'Warm-Up' SortieAir squadrons of HMS Ocean,

sister-ship of HMCS Magnificent,"warmed up" for Korean operationsas the aircraft carrier proceeded fromSingapore to Hong Kong earlier thisyear to relieve HMS Glory in the wartheatre.

Thirteen Sea Fury aircraft and sevenFireflies, fully armed and carryingrockets, flew from the Ocean onanti-bandit operations in a regionsouth-west of ]ohore, Malaya.

This was one of the few occasions onwhich carrier-borne aircraft had at­tacked the bandits in Malaya.

Shortly after relieving the Glory,the Ocean achieved a remarkableoperational flying record. In one dayher two squadrons, 802 and 826, flew123 sorties against enemy positions.They destroyed three railway bridges,an oil fuel dump, coastal gun emplace­ments and 15 vehicles 10ilded withammunition, and attacked numeroustroop encampments and store dumps.

The previous one-day record was105 sorties and was held by the Glory'scarrier air grou p.

GlV'ERRS before the Royal CanadianJIL Navy was establisped, youngCanadi~ns, drawn by a love of thesea, had won a place for themselvesand their homeland in the navalhistory of the British Empire.

One of the Royal Navy's out­standing heroes of the 19th Centurywas William Hall, a humble Negrowho left a tiny hamlet in NovaScotia to serve in the fleet, and whobecame, in the year 1857, one of thefirst three Canadians .to win the£mpire's highest award for bravery­the Victoria Cross.

I t is somewhat paradoxical thatthe scene of Hall's valiant act wasnot the deck of one of the warshipsin which he served ~o long and well,but the plains of India during themutiny of 1857. Hall was a member ofa brigade sent from HMS Shannon *to assist in the campaign against themutineers, and particularly in therelief of the British garris:m atLucknow.

At a critical stage in the assaulton the mutineers' stronghold, whenall the other members of his guncrew had fallen, Hall continued work­ing the gun. alone under a hail ofbullets until' he fired the charge thatbreached the wall and made possiblethe rescue of the garrison.

The man who performed this bravedeed was 'born at Horton's Bluff,:N .S., on April 28, 1827. His fatherhad been one of a group of slavesbeing transported from the westcoast of Africa to the United Stateswhen the ship bearing them wasintercepted by a British frigate duringthe War of 1812. The slaves werebrought to Halifax, where they wereliberated and given' assistance infinding jobs and settling down inNova Scotia.

His father adopted the name ofHall from a benefactor and foundwork.with a farmer in Hants County,He married a girl. who had alsoescaped slavery by fleeing to' one ofthe ships in the British fleet whichcaptured Washington in 1812..

Little is known of William Hall'sboyhood. He attended school atHorton's Bluff, and even at an earlvage showed a keen Interest in the

Navy. In this he was no doubtencouraged by his father and mother,who owed their freedom to the shipsof the Royal Navy. It was a naturalstep, therefore, when young Halljoined HMS Rodney at Halifax as anable seaman.

He remained in this ship untilJanuary 30, 1856, serving through theCrimean War, and was awardedBritish and Turkish medals, theformer with the Sebastopol and Inker­man clasps. .After a short· time inHMS Victory, he went to HMS

to China, in readiness for expectedtrouble there, when the Indian Mutinybroke out in Meerut on Sunday,May 10, 1857. Lord Elgin, formerGovenior General of Upper Canada,was on board one of the ships in theconvoy. He had been appointedEnvoy Extraordinary to China totry to effect a settle.ment of difficultieswith the Peking government.

When the ships arrived at Singa­pore, they learned of the desperatesituation in India. Mutiny had brokenout and, stimulated by early suc­cesses, had spread rapidly. The rebelSepoys, part of the native army, hadtaken Delhi and Cawnpore, wherethey had killed all white women andchildren, and were besieging Lucknow,where only a small garrison still heldout.

The expeditionary forces were sailedto Calcutta to swell the relief army·assembling there. The warships con­tinued on to Hong Kong but, afterLord Elgin had been urged to sendback as many men as possible, twonaval brigades, from HMS Shannonand HMS Pearl, were organized.Able Seaman Hall set out with theShannon brigade under the commandof Captain William Peel, VC, aCriinean hero who was later torecommend him for the VictoriaCross.

The brigade, composed of 450men with six eight-inch guns, two 24­pound howitzers and two field pieces,arrived in Calcutta in August 1857.They proceeded 800 miles up theGanges, towed by the steamerChunar,to Allahabad. Here a prolonged haltwas made while arrangements to takethe guns across the country wereattempted. This proved difficult andthe heavy guns were left behind.

On October 28 they pushed onwith the 24-pound howitzers, fightingtheir way to Cawnpore, which hadalready been recaptured by theBritish. There they joined up withreinforcements from Britain preparingto go to the relief of Lucknow.Commanding officer of. the reliefforces was Sir Colin Campbell, laterto become Lieutenant Governor ofNova Scotia. On November 28,1857,the historic march began. At Luck­nQw, an army of 50;000 Sepoyssurrounded the residency, where theremnants of the British garrison,under Sir John Inglis, still held out.As a result of the long siege, thegarrison had been reduced to ahandful of men, supplies were runningshort and the residency was in ruins.

The relief forces numbered only.5,000 men. They marched under theburning Indian sun to face a wellsituated and far stronger enemy.

The key to Lucknow was the ShahNuj iff, a walled mosque; but first awalled enclosure, the Sekandarhagh,had to be taken. The attack waslaunched from the southeast. Initialprogress was slow but in mid-after­noon the 93rd Highlanders and Sikhsattacked the Sekandarhagh and car-reid it with the bayonet. '

The troops moved on to the ShahNujiff, a half mile to the west. The

mosque was surrounded by loop­holed walls several feet thick, andwas garrisoned by 30,000 Sepoys.It was a strategic position and thecentre of resistance.

The Shannon brigade dragged itsguns to within 400 yards of the wallsto lay down the preliminary bom­bardment. The crew of a 24-poundhowitzer was one man short andHall, who had been in charge of agun aboard ship, volunteered toreplace him.

At 4 o'clock the order was givento attack the mosque. The Shannoncrew laid dOW1} a heavy cannonade,sending shot after shot crashinginto the mosque, but the walls wereso thick that the projectiles had noeffect. Meanwhile, the mutineers,from their pr()tected position, wereinflicting heavy casualties on theattackers.

"The men were falling thick andfast," reads an eye-witness account."Even Peel's usually bright facebecame grave and anxious. Sir ColinCampbell sat on his white horseexposed to the whole storm of shotlooking intently on the Shah Nujiff.It was wreathed in volumes of smokefrom the burning buildings andsparked all over with bright flashesof small arms. It was now apparentthat the crisis of the battle had beenreached."

A breach had to be made in thewalls without delay. The Shannonguns went forward with the fieldartillery, taking up a position a fewhundred yards from the walls.

They poured a steady stream offire against the walls, still withoutvisible effect. The guns went forwardagain.

Then Sir Colin Campbell orderedthe 93rd Highlanders to attack withbayonet. But the walls were stillunbreached and, having no scalingladders, they came to a halt in theenclosure surrounding the mosque. Atorrent of musketry dropped them bythe score and they were forced toretire.

Peel ordered two guns nearer to thewalls. The sailors strained at theropes and brought the guns to within20 yards of the enclosure. The enemyconcentrated its fire on the navalgun crews until one crew was com­pletely annihilated. Of the Shannoncrew, only Hall and one officer, Lieut.Young, were left, the latter badlywounded ..

Hall, a fine, powerful man andsteady as a rock under fire, calmlyworked his gun under the murderousstorm. He methodically sponged andreloaded and continued poundingaway at the defences. Finally he firedthe charge that opened the walls.

A number of the 93rd Highlandersthen advanced, entered the mosquethrough the hole in the walls andopened the gates. They found themosque deserted. The moment thebreach was made in the walls, theenemy, though still possessing theadvantage in numbers and position,turned and fled.

A historian says of the victory:"They fled from the place without a

The city of Lucknow now lay opento the British. Its relief marked theend of large scale resistance in Indiaand the beginning of restoration ofBritish prestige, not only there butelsewhere in the world.

That old soldier, Sir Colin Camp­bell, referred to the relief of Lucknowas an action "unexampled in war."

For his signal courage and devo­tion, Hall was recommended forand received the Victoria Cross.

The citation read, in part, "Finally,in one of the most su,preme moments1:n a,ll the age-long story of humancourage, Hall fired the charge whichopened the walls and enabled theBritish to push through to the reliefof the garrison and ultimately to thequelling of the mut1:ny and the re­storation of peace and order in India."

Hall continued to serve in the Navyin various ratings,. including that ofquartermaster, until he retired as apetty officer first class on July 4, 1876.Following the mutiny he served inHM Ships Donegal, Bellerophon,Impregnable, Petrel and, finally,HMS Royal Adelaide.

Hall returned to Nova Scotia tolive. He never married but dweltwith two sisters, Mrs. Robinson andMiss Rachel Hall. His chief recreationwas hunting.

His last public appearance was atHalifax on October 19, 1901, whenhe took part in a parade of Britishveterans during the visit of the Dukeof York (later King George V).Hall was honored by being givena carriage in the procession. In addi­tion to the Victoria Cross he woreMutiny, Crimean and other servicemedals. This impressive array at­tracted the attention of the SailorDuke, who stopped to. shake handswith Hall and to inquire about hisservice.

Three years later, in 1904, Halldied in Hantsport of paralysis, in his80th year. He was buried in what was,until comparatively recently, ali un­marked grave. In 1937 the Hantsportbranch of the Canadian Legionstarted a drive to have Hall's valorrecognized in permanent form. Tenyears later a memorial was erectedin his honor at Hantsport.

The memorial is in the form of acairn bearing a bronze replica of theVictoria Cross. Beneath the crossis a plaque telling of Hall's courageand devotion at the relief of Lucknow.

HMCS CrusaderOfficers and men of the Crusader

were hosts, to their relatives andfriends at "open house" aboard theship a few days before she sailedMay 2S for the Far East.

For the children there were toursthroughout the ship, from engineroom to bridge, motorboat rides in theharbor, movies, soft drinks andice cream. Three clowns, in appro­priate costume, roamed about theship distributing balloons and otherfavors.

HMCS AntigonishThe Antigonish completed refit in

mid-April and, after a week oftrials, sailed for Bedwell Harbor forwork-ups and to clean and paint ship.

Returning to Esquimalt on May 8,the Antigonish embarked the. bandof HM CS N aden and a guard fromthe RCN Barracks and sailed for

Bellingham, Washington, to take partin that city's Blossomtime Festival.

Officers and men thoroughly en­joyed their three-day stay at Belling­ham and were loud in their praise ofthe hospitality they encountered.Naden's guard and band created avery favorable impression, with thelocal newspaper terming the band'sperformance "the hit of the BlossomFestival Grand Pageant."

In an official letter to Lieut.-Cdr.Raymond Phillips, commanding offi­cer of the Antigonish, Bellingham'smayor said, "I can confidently tell youthat the entire group was a veryexcellent representation of our goodneighbors to the North, and all thoseinvolved in organizing this presenta­tion for Canada are in line for thehighest compliments."

On May 13 the Antigonish em­barke.d 46 cadets and six days laterproceeded to Bedwell Harbor incompany with HMCS Sioux to offi­cially start the summer sea training

. program.

Ordnance SchoolThe school was pleasantly sur­

prised to receive a call from CPO'Bert Nelson" who was passing throughfrom HMCS Cayuga, then in the FarEast, on his way to attend the annualmeeting of the Benevolent Fund inOttawa.

Two officers who were in the schoolfor a few weeks have joined theOntario for training. They are Ord:'nance Sub-Lieutenants LaurenceArthurs and J. V. Germain, bothformer UNTD cadets.. PO William Still has gone to theOntario to relieve PO Edward C.Alexander, who left for a leadershipcourse at Cornwallis.

CPO Harry Leggett, who has beenwith the service for 22 years, hasstarted his retirement leave. He hasspent nearly all his career in theunderwater weapon world, first in theold torpedo branch, then in theordnance branch as a chief armourer(torpedo). CPO Leggett survived twosinkings during the war, those of theFraser and' the Margaree.

A Father and Son Night heldrecently at HMCS Shearwater provedso successful that plans are being madefor a repeat performance - but biggerand Detter - in the near future.

Some 75 fathers and their sonsenjoyed a program featuring suchevents as sabre swinging, movies,clown acts aad stunts of one kind andanother. The fact that there wasplenty to eat for both seniors andjuniors also contributed to the successof the evening.

completion of refit at Halifax Ship­yards and of the ship's working uptrials, both in record time.

Ammunitioning was carried outduring three periods of intensive dogwatch effort, the seaman, supply andstoker branches vieing with one an­other on successive evenings.

Refit completed , the Swansea movedacross to the dockyard and, withtrials personnel and the ship's com­pany co-operating perfectly, finishedall pre-cruise trials in an unpre­cedented three days.

On May 19 the Swansea began whatpromised to be an interesting andsuccessful summer, with 120 cadets

. to be trained in three short months,accompanying ships. to be vanquishedin various inter-ship competitions,and a number of interesting overseasports to be visited,

During refit a ship's basketballteam was organized and, althoughonly two games were played, thenucleus of a fairly strong team for thefuture was formed.

Other sports activities included theparticipation by two ship's teams inthe Command volleyball tournament.Though most of the players werenew to the game, the First Teammanaged to win three games beforegoing down to defeat. - A .J.M.

Lieut. (P) William J. Spencer washeld in St. George's Church, Corn­wallis, on the afternoon of April 28.

,A large number of officers and menattended the service, which wasconducted by Chaplain (P) HarryPike and Chaplain F. H. Godfrey.

Lieut. Spencer was killed when anAvenger aircraft he was pilotingcrashed while flying out of the NavalAir Station at Dartmouth, N.S.Lieut. Spencer served at Cornwallisfor more than two years prior toreturning to flying duties shortlybefore the accident took place.

On Sunday, May 11, 70 membersof the Cornwallis Choir, under thedirection of Commander'R. W. M ur­doch, travelled to Liverpool, N.S.,where they sang in the UnitedBaptist Church.

The Naval Officers Association ofVictoria has instituted an annualscholarship of $300 to assist the childrenof ex-personnel of the CommonwealthNaval Fo['ces, resident in the provinceof B.C., and'expressing a desire tojoin any' university naval trainingscheme, to enter the first year ofuniversity at the University of BritishColumbia or at Victoria College. Therecipient of the award will be selectedby the Joint Faculty Committee onPrizes, Scholarships and Bursaries ofthe University of B.C. arid the selectionwill be based on scholarship, character,leadership and financial need.

Among the former weredivers qualifying in demolitions; radarplotters first class taking a two-daycourse in the TAS aspect of plotting,and one officer, one CPO and an ableseaman of the Uruguayan Navy whospent two weeks with CPO FredPurnell for instruction in depthcharges and hedgehog. CPO Purnellalso benefited from this course, ac­quiring an acceptable understandingof Spanish.

The destroyer command examina­tions held during May had some ofthe staff working additional hours, alarge number of officers having chosento sit for the TAS section of the exams.

About 300 students from nine Van­couver high schools toured Discoverywhen the division held the first ofwhat it hopes will be a series ofsemi-annual "High School Nights".

Transported to the Stanley Parknaval establishment in specially char­tered busses, the students, boys andgirls 17 and over, were taken onspecial tours in small groups. Theyinspected the communications set­up and saw reserve operators trans­mitting messages by teletype andmorse; saw asdic in operation; in­spected weapons; were guests at a"dummy run" in the TAS school;witnessed the kitting out of newen tries; saw the rifle range and touredthe division's tender, PTC 124.

As there was no commercial flightscheduled to Halifax until some timelater, a telephone call W;1S put throughto Captain D. L. Raymond, com­manding officer of HMCS Shearwater.

An Avenger, piloted by Lieut. G. D.Westwood, was dispatched immediatelyfrom the air station, landed at SaintJohn airport, embarked PO Barnesand flew him to Dartmouth. Soonafter getting the telegram he was home.

HMCS Brunswicker(Saint John)

Brunswicker played host to teachersand senior students of four Saint Johnand district high schools on May 14with scores of inquisitive youths beingtaken on a tour of the establishment.

The "High School Night" wasdesigned to give the students anopportunity to see for themselvesthe role played by the naval divisionin the community. During the nearlythree hours the students were atBrunswicker, they saw personnel undertraining and witnessed demonstra­tions of anti-submarine weapons, com­munications and seamanship. Laterin the evening they were shown acolor movie of the navy in action andwere addressed briefly by the com­manding officer, Commander J. A.MacKinnon.

Commander MacKinnon was anhonor guest of the University ofNew Brunswick at the annualgraduation exercises May 15. Amongthe graduates were four RCN cadetswho received the degree 'of bachelorof science in electrical ~ngineering.

After careful consideration, the car­der's personnel decided to use the fundfor recreational purposes. Additionalphonograph records were purchasedfor the ship's broadcasting station,MAGI, and playing cards, cribbageboards, chessmen and similar amllse­ment gear were obtained.

HMCS Scotian(Halifax)

Captain A. G. Boulton, Director ofNaval Reserves, carried out an in­spection of the ship's company andfacilities at Scotian in mid-Mayduring his annual tour of navaldivisions in Eastern Canada.

Addressing the ship's company,Captain Boul ton declared that astrong reserve was essential to areal1y effective naval effort. He out­lined the changes in the reservetraining program and complimentedofficers and men on their showingthroughout the year and at theinspection.

Captain Boulton later visited theminesweeper BrockviJIe, training ten­der for the division.

HMCS York(Toronto)

Mayor Allan Lamport of Torontoand several members of his councilpaid a visit May 7 to HMCS York.The group witnessed the regularWednesday night training in thevarious classrooms and the depart­ments.

Personnel of York paid last respectsApril 28 to CPO Harold Hart, whowas fataJly inj ured in an automobileaccident on the Queen ElizabethHighway. He ]1ad been a member ofthe ship's company' of York for aconsiderable time.

A radar set instaJled in the divi­sion's radar room performed opera­tionaJly for the first time early inMay. Believed to be the only one func­tioning in any of the naval divisionsin Canada, the set has a range offive miles and easily picks up theFairway Buoy and other navigationalaids in Toronto harbor. The set wasloaned to York by Canadian Arsenals,Limited, and wiJl be used for trainingand navigation direction practice withthe division's Fairmile and tug.

HMCS Hunter(Windsor)

The ship's company of HMCSHunter, led by the division's brassband, paraded through downtownWindsor May 18 for special servicesat AJI Saints' Anglican Church tocommemorate the Battle of the Atlan­tic. The church services were con­ducted by Rev. Carl Swan, a wartimenaval chaplain.

Training afloat on the Detroitriver stepped up with the return ofPTC 762 from winter storage atErieau. The training craft has takenHunter personnel and sea cadets on anumber of short training cruises.

Captain F. H. Gardner, UnitedStates Naval Attache at Ottawa,visited Hunter in May while inthe Windsor-Detroit area. He in­spected training facilities and took

the salute as the ship's companymarched past during divisions.

HMCS Montcalm(Quebec City)

The ship's company paraded todivine service on Battle of the Atlan­tic Sunday, May 18. After the service,the parade proceeded to the Cenotaph,where a wreath was laid by Com­mander M. ]. Jette, commandingofficer of Montcalm, on behalf of theship's company.

Lieut. Pierre Simard was in chargeof the parade. Assisting were Instr.Lieut. L. W. Maundcote-Carter,Instr. Lieut. R. ]. Leclair and Sub­Lieut. (S) .T. B. Carisse. The band,under the direction of Lieut. (SB)WiJl Brodrique, was in attendance.

At a recent informal gathering inthe wardroom, the ofiicers said "aurevoir" to Lieut.-Cdr. D. I. McGill,executive ofiicer of the division,prior to his departure to take upresidence and employment in Mon­treal.

two years in Hl\tlCS St. Croix and al­though living conditions were not 'ofthe best, we had a lot of fun. Most ofmy shipmates are gone with the oldship, but many of the things - thathappened are well remembered. Ithink we are all inclined, to forget theqad or unpleasant incidents and bestremember the others. I t is one of theseI would like to tell you about.

I guess everyone in the servicegripes a certain amount at some time,and I know the St. Croix was no ex­ception. In our crowded stokers' messwe had a man named Paul McDonald.Paul was from Montreal and beforehis entry into the Navy had worked atthe YMCA.

,&. PPLE PIE with "built-in"~ cheese is one of the recentinnovations OD the menu at HMCSStadacona, th e RCN barracks andtraining establjshment at Halifax.

This and a n umber of other changeshave been made in Navy recipes sincea cookery school was opened on theEast Coast a few months ago.

When cooks at the main galleyin Stadacona reported that the menwere not eatilJg the issue cheese alongwith their apple pie, the chief cook atthe school, CPO Lloyd MacArthur,built the cheese right into the piecrusts.

It is CPO MacArthur's job to testand recommend changes in recipeswhen it is found that they are notbeing received well in the messes.And, if any of the cooks who use anissue recipe book find that the bookdoesn't produce the best results, orif they come up with a new wrinkle oftheir own, they pass it along to theChief for a trial. If it proves moresatisfactory than the existing recipe,it goes to Ottawa recommended as areplacement.

CPO MacArthur presides over agleaming galley in the basement ofthe Stadacona administration building.

"It's a very tidy little galley andwe didn't think it should be going towaste," said Commander (S) R. V.Bowditch, Supply Officer at Stada­cona, at whose suggestion the schoolwas started, in explaining why heproposed opening the cookery school.

Its most in"lportant function, as faras the supply branch is concerned, isthe instruction it gives to all cooks inthe command in the baking of bread.

As Commander Bowditch puts, it:"It is extremely important that everyNavy cook know how to bake bread.He may be in a ship at sea whichruns out of bread before it reachesits base. Th~n it's up to him toproduce bread for the crew, for breadis one of the staples of their diet."

Every day of the week finds aNavy cook busily baking a ten-poundbatch of bread in the galley. Hereports early in the morning and,under the watchful eye of CPOMacArthur, goes through the wholebread making routine, from thesetting of the yeast to the slicing ofthe finished loaf.

If the bread isn't up to standard,he's headed for more instruction.

There have been several instancesin which the school has proved its"trouble shooting" ability.

The most unusual concerned theapple pie and cheese. The schooltried several experiments. First, thecheese was grated into the pastry mix.But it was found that the cheesecontained so much salt that, whenit was combined with the salt alreadyin the pastry, it made the mixtureunpalatable. The salt was droppedfrom the pastry mix recipe and theresult was a good pie crust with"built in" cheese.

"The case of the pale pie crust"was also solved by the school. Be­cause they were afraid the pie crusts,especially for steak and kidney pie,were being made tough, the cooks hadstopped using an egg or milk washin their preparation. This wash givesthe crust a rich, golden color and itsomission left the crusts looking paleand unappetizing.

After some testing with greaterand lesser amounts of shortening,CPO MacArthur proved that thewash had little or nothing to do withthe quality of the pastry. He did findthat an egg wash does a better job.Now all steak and kidney pies lookjust like the ones mother used to make.

Another important function thecookery school fulfills is the testing ofcooks for promotion.

These men come from the variousships and establishments in the com­mand. They are required to prepare afive-course meal, from the orderingof their supplies to dishing it upready to serve. These meals arecooked by a different man twice aday for two weeks.

The testing staff, which includesCommander Bowditch and the deputysupply officer, Lieut.-Cdr. (S) LeoNeveu, find!" this job the hardest.A five-course dinner at 11 a.m. and4 p.m. every day for two weeks is alittle more than the average con­stitution can stand.

Three-Department TeamTops Naden Competition

A combined Medical,Communica­tions and Navigation Direction teamfinished in first place in the competi­tion for the winter Cock of the Bar­racks trophy at HMCS Naden.

The competitions consisted of volley­ball, basketball, hockey, .22 rifleshooting, bowling, badminton andswimming.

Medical, Comm. and ND compiled105 points, 13 more than second-placeSupply Naden. Other teams in orderof finish were: Supply School "A",T AS and Electrical, MTE "A",Band, Supply School "B", MTE "B"arid Ordnance.

The week following the end of thewinter sports, the softball schedule­the first 6f the summer sports - gotunder way. After two weeks of play,Supply Naden and TAS and Electricalshared the top spot with two winsin as many starts.

Wrens from HMC Naval RadioStation Coverdale have entered ateam in the Moncton City and Dis­trict Baseball League and, on thebasis of the skill they have shown atpractice sessions, have been picked aslikely pace-setters.

In an exhibition basketball gameplayed at the Moncton Garrison,HMCS Stadacona defeated Coverdale78-61.

Softball, SoccerStart at Cornwallis

Inter-part and inter-divisional soft­ball leagues at HMCS Cornwallisgot under way early in May with 12teams entered in each circuit. Simi­larly organized soccer leagues wereslated to begin play at the end of themonth.

Champions were decided in volley­ball and deck hockey as the indoorsports season ended at Cornwallis.Saguenay Division won the inter­divisional volleyball championship ina sudden-death knockout tournamentin which all new entry divisions tookpart.

In deck :hockey Crusader Divisiondefeated Columbia Division in thefinal of a similar tournament.

CornwalLis played a not too gracioushost to Shearwater in a challengeboxing meet, the Annapolis Valleymittmenwinning five of the six bouts.

The Cornwallis chief and pettyofficers visited Dartmouth to take onthe chiefs and POs of Shearwater ina challenge hockey match that endedin a 3-3 tie.

Another exhibition hockey gamefound the East beating the West by a15-1 score at Cornwallis. The "Blue­nosers" had too much class for the"Indians." .

Shearwatel' GriddersHold Spring Practice

There was a lull in sports activitiesat HMCS Shearwater as winterschedules ended and preparationswere underway for the summercompetitions.

The soccer team dqnned playingtogs earlier than expected in order toplay host to the visiting team fromHMS Sheffield in an exhibition game.The Sheffield scored a 2-1 win, withall goals being scored in the second·half and the winning marker comingwith only five minutes remaining inthe game.

Candidates turned out for a repre­sentative team which has entered inthe Dartmouth Suburban Softball.League. While they took over onepart of the playing field, the Shear­water football team was getting insome spring training on another.

Montcalm Enters Teamin City Ball League

An inter-part softball league is infull swing in the Quebec City division.

An elaborate sports schedule wasarranged as part of the entertainmentprogram for the ship's company ofHMS Sheffield during the cruiser'svisit to Halifax May 8-13. Athleticevents included soccer, rugger, basket­ball, golf, cricket, swimming anddiving, water polo and squash, withteams from Shearwater, Cornwallisand Stadacona providing the com­petition in· all but rugger. RCNteams won six out of ten events andin the rugger match the RN cruiser'steam played to a 6-6 tie with HalifaxWanderers.

Aldergrove.Competingin Local Ball Loop

Aldergrove Naval Radio Stationhas entered a team in the Abbotsfordand District Softball League for thecurrent season. Members include CPOCharlie Moser, PO Bob Connor,AB John Jewel1 , Ldg. A tournament to decide the AtlanticCommand volleyball championshipwas held at HMCS Stadacona thenight of May 5 with 16 teams fromthe Halifax and Dartmouth area andfrom HMCS Cornwallis playing atotal of 30 games.

Shearwater officers took the title,edging the P&RT Staff of Stadaconain a best of three final series. Scoreswere 14-15, 15-10 and 15-1.

The play began at 4 :30 p.m. andthe final game ended at 11 :30. Gameswere played in the form of doubleknockout series on three courts in theStadacona gymnasium.

Radio Station StaffGoes in for Fishing

Fishing has become the main avoca­tion at Albro Lake, with quite a largenumber of trout being taken fromwaters within the radio station'sboundaries.

Honors for the largest fish caughtare currently held by CPO Cassam(Slim) Marlin, who recently landeda speckled trout weighing two pounds972 ounces and measuring 1772 inchesfrom bow to stern. Lieut. GeorgeHoyte, ofiicer-in-charge, is runninga close second with a fish measuring17 inches. PO John Layton, Ldg. Clothing Stores, pace-setter duringthe regular schedule, won the Stada­cona inter-part bowling champion­ship, defeating Central Stores by337 pins in a six-string, total pinfallfinal. .

Twelve teams were entered in theplayoffs, with first-place ClothingStores and seventh-place CentralStores surviving the preliminary eli­minations.

Sports Events ArrangedFor Visiting Cruiser

A varied sports program was ar­ranged by HMCS Donnacona forthe ship's company of HMS Sheffieldduring the cruiser's visit to Montreal.It included soccer, cricket and ruggermatches and a swimming meet.

A sports week-end held on thedrill deck of Donnacona resulted in avictory for the RCAF, St. John, Que.Donnacona placed second, followedby RCAF, St. Hubert, and the BlackWatch. Badminton, volleyball andbasketball :were played. .

The Montreal division will fieldtwo softball teams this year, one inthe Westmount Inter-Service Leagueand the other in the Montreal CityLeague.

(CP) - A man who claims he saw thebirth of' an island thinks someoneshould place a flag on it "before theRussians claim it."

Neil S. Jamieson, 21, third officeraboard the 7,SOO-ton British freighterQueen Anne, now berthed hEjre, toldthe story on Saturday. .

He, and all other officers and crewof the freighter, said they saw thevolcanic island emerge from theocean floor the afternoon of May 8about 200 miles northwest of CapeEngano, at the northern tip of Luzonin the Philippines.

"It was an awe-inspiring sight, tosee the eruption with its pall. of blacksmoke and steam and millions ofgallons of water being thrown up,"Jamieson said. .

"My first reaction was disbelief andwe were all rather skeptical of whatwas taking place. At first I thought itwas a storm in the distance because ofthe black cloud."

From a distance of five miles theship's .company said they saw the1,000-foot high rock emerge from thesea. Jamieson estimated it to be three­quarters of a rrti·le wide.

Officers found the volcano lies in the'path of a fault which runs all the wayfrom Siberia through the Japaneseislands and the Philippines; Islandshave been known to appear and some­times disappear again in this area ofthe north Pacific. - (Canadian Pressdispatch).

BATTLE OF THE ATLANTIC SUNDAY1. At Halifax, more than 3,000 naval personnel marched, May 18, to services

commemorating the Battle of the Atlantic. The photo shows a general view of theservice in the Grand Parade with personnel of the RCN and RCN(R), Sea Cadets andnaval veterans in attendance. Other services were held at the Convent of the SacredHeart and, for more Ulan 750 Shearwater personnel, at churches in Dartmouth.

2. Similar observances were carried out on the West Coast. Here sailors fromships and shore establishments file into St. Andrews Church, Victoria.

3. Senior officers of the Atlantic Command arc shown in front of the war memorialin the Grand Parade at Halifax.

4. At Saint John, Captain C. H. Bonnycastle, RCN(R), Ret'd, extreme right,took the salute at a march past of officers and men from HMCS Brunswicker. Mem­bers of the Naval Off,cers Association, the Main Brace Naval Veterans' Association

and sea cadets from RCSCC Rodney participated in the parade, which was headedby Brunswicker's pipe band.

5. Wrens were in evidence in many of the parades. Here a group of \¥rcns frol11Coverdale Radio Station gives an eyes right during the march past the saluting baseat the Moncton city hall. They are led by Lieut. (W) Audrey B. Worden.

6. In Ottawa, naval personnel from HMCS Carleton, Naval Headquarters andGloucester Radio Station and sea cadets of RCSCC Falkland combined forces to formthe largest naval parade in the Canadian capital since the war. A portion of the Ottawaparade is shown on Metcalfe street proceeding to Dominion United Church.

7. In Montreal, ships' companies of HMCS Donnacona and HMS Sheffield, ledby the Royal Marine band from the latter, paraded to city churches for Battle of theAtlantic services.

Petty Officer Kenneth Wilson, manager of the Naden Petty Officers' Mess, chatswith 94-year-old Mrs. Sarah Walton during the Mother's Day visit paid by repre­.sentatives of the mess to the Aged Women's Home in Victoria. Ports of call for ships taking part. in the first of three West Coastcruises were Bedwell Harbor, in' theGulf of Georgia; Prince Rupert, B.C.,and Juneau, Alaska. Three-day callswere made at each of the two latterports.

By the end of the month the train­ing grollp, made of HMC ShipsSioux, Beacon Hill and Antigonish,had begun its second cruise, whichwill include a visit to Long Beach,California. San Diego will be visitedduring the third and final cruise.

Tanned by the Riviera sun, UNTOcadets who took part in the first ofthree trans-Atlantic summer cruisesreturned to Halifax June 20.

The East Coast training group,composed of HMC Ships Crescent,La Hulloise and Swansea, called atthe Azores and visited Gibraltar andthe French Mediterranean naval baseof Toulon. Each stay was marked byoutstanding hospitality.

From Toulon, the group proceededto Villefranche, only a few miles fromCannes and Nice on the Riviera, for aregatta, then began the journey backto Canada.

Subseqllent training cruises thissummer will take the group to portsin the United Kingdom and France.

Ontario Performs MercyMission During Cruise

Another mercy mission was addedearly in June to the list of theseperformed by HMCS Ontario.

training cruise to San Diego, Cali­fOJ;nia, when the weather ship, CGS(formerly HMCS) Stonetown , 800miles away, sent out a call for medicalassistance for a 17-year-old crewmember who had fallen against afire extinguisher and was sufferingagonizing abdominal pains. He hadundergone an appendix operationonly three weeks before.

The two ships made rendezvousand the injured man was transferredto the Ontario. Once under medicalcare in the cruiser's sick bay, thepatient was found to be in no im­mediate danger and the ship resumedher course for San Diego.

On her return to Canadian waters,the Ontario paid her first visit in twoyears to Vancouver. The latter partof June and most of July were setaside as a leave period, but trainingcruises to West Coast ports were to beresumed in August.
