Before the Surgeon General’s mandatory warning on cigarettes in 1964, smoking was an
accepted habit and advertising on ash trays the norm. A give-away glass ash tray was of-
fered in the Edsel Announcement Materials catalog and carried the slogan “Newest Thing
On Wheels”. The catalog illustration with its two-color logo “E” does not match what is
believed to be the “as received” catalog ash tray with “EDSEL” in green text on round
white background as shown above in the example from Music-Colvin Motor Co., Inc.
Still, other designs were available such as the example from Furnans Auto Co. that
features an Edsel dealership sign. Both ash trays measure 3-1/2 inches square
with the Furnans ash tray having a thickness of 5/8 inches and the Music-Colvin
ash tray having a thickness of 1-1/8 inches.

Greetings from the past and introducing the future,
I know it’s been a while but they finally let me out after I
promised not to pull a Grover Cleveland. I hope everyone survived
the winter OK. Here at the Circle “E” Ranch winter has not yet re-
leased its icy grip. Actually it still has both of its hands around our
throats and is cartoonishly whipping us from side to side on the
ground like a rag doll. Speaking of that; I think I learned more
watch the Stooges and Saturday morning cartoons than I ever did in
school. That was before all of the lawyers and politicians, who hap-
pen to be lawyers took all of the fun out of being a kid. Sorry, I
seemed to have drifted.
My main purpose here is to invite any and all IEC folk to
once again join us here in New York for a rollicking good Rally.
Due to the generosity and help of the good people at the local Sim-
mons-Rockwell Ford dealerships, this July, in the rolling hills of the
Finger Lakes region we will host the 46th IEC convention. You will
find most of the details further on in this newsletter but I’ll give you
the highlights. First we will have Edsels. That should be enough but
there are many other things planned. We will visit an extensive pri-
vate auto collection, tour the Corning Museum of Glass and the
world famous Wadkins Glen International Raceway. This has all
been made possible because Bruce held a gun on us and made us do
it but it was Ok because I put my finger in the end of the barrel and
it harmlessly blew up in his face. * In addition to these events as
well as the usual things done by the usual suspects the area provides
a multitude of things to do and places to see. The Market Street area
in downtown located just minutes away is a great, historic and quaint
place to behold. If you are a regular at these events I need not ex-
plain but if you have never been able to make a rally please give it a
try. It’s just great to spend some time not only enjoying other cars
and people’s stories but also learning of the history of the Edsel and
our group dedicated to its preservation. It’s a perfect place to find
advice and parts for that restoration or just pick up on some of the
ins and outs of the operation of these nearly sixty year old classics.
The public love to look and ask. The good folks at the hotel have
rolled out the carpet and are ready, willing and able to help you en-
joy your stay. I look forward to seeing you all in July in the mean

Edsel Convertible Top Vinyl Project! IEC member Bill Brzoza of New York has located an original supplier of the 1958-1959 Edsel and
1957-1959 Ford convertible top material to Ford Motor Company. Many who own a 1958 or 1959
convertible will know that the original top material
had a pin-point pattern vinyl outer layer in the ap-propriate exterior color of the top with a tan cloth
material sandwiched underneath. If Bill can get ten
orders for white tops then the company that made these top years ago will make a special run of the
vinyl and cloth combination material. Once the
order for white material is complete then a second run of black top material may be made. For more

The Stoher Broadcasting Company Radio Program, “The Automobile Show of the Air with Jack La Gaus”, which was aired in 1957 just after the intro-duction of the 1958 Edsel.
