The month of June will awaken a reverie in timeThe one thing that keeps us going is a dreamLiving life in a self contained passage in timeTo awaken a dream----a dream that shinesThis is what we own ----at times----both day and night,

To dream is nature’s riteIt puts one in a place apartThis is a happening----a way for unconscious sightTo live life----to make a brand new startTo awaken a dream----at times----both day and night,

There is abundance within us----an inner lightIn a dream----visions----they bring one delightFashioned by a wonderful neural networkReaching out to the world----for all its worthTo awaken a dream ----at times----both day and night,

We are the architects of conceptsDream masters----storytellersLiving the book of our livesTo awaken a dream----to make it ours----at timesBoth day and night

---JohN BERBRICh With the release of their latest CD, Empty

Promises, I’d have to say that the Waydown Wailers pretty much have everything going right. They play blues, rock, and swamp-rock with a whiff of country. But before I go into all this, let’s drift back in time.

I own three Waydown Wailer recordings. The first is from 2011, recorded live at the Childstock Music Festival. This EP consists of four songs, in all of which the band gets into a great blues-rock groove. Despite be-ing a live performance, it’s a clear recording with clearly expert instrumentation. The first full CD, State of the Union, from 2013, was recorded at Subcat Studios in Syracuse. For this they took the four songs from the Childstock recording, rerecorded them in the studio, added four new songs, and filled out their sound with a variety of keyboards played by the mysterious Professor Louie and backing vocals by the equally mysteri-ous Miss Marie.

Now we have Empty Promises, recorded at Subcat at the end of 2015. Same band, same energetic sound that is somehow rough and smooth at the same time, same

mysterious Professor Louie and Miss Marie helping out, big time. The band lines up like this: a solid foundation is laid down by Mike Scriminger on straight-a h e a d drums and C o n n o r Pelkey on dependable bass and backing vo-cals; Chris-tian Parker plays lead and rhythm guitar; Dave Parker also plays lead and rhythm guitar, as well as man-dolin—and he’s the singer. One of my favor-ite things about the Wailers is Parker’s voice.

The guy can sing tunefully, almost sweetly at times, and he can growl with the nastiest

blues-mas-ter. Plus he writes all the lyrics, except on “Still Water” (with a hint of coun-try yodel), on which he shares credit with his brother Christian.

There ’s a lot to like on this new CD, start-ing with the catchy first song, “Don’t Let Life Pass

You By,” which basically exhorts you to get out there and enjoy yourself, do those things

you want to do while you can. “No Time to Waste” dispenses similar timely advice jux-taposed with moonlight-cool swampy gui-tar. The earworm “Jealousy” really kicks it with its opening chunka-chunka guitar right on through to the furious organ-cum-guitar coda. My other favorite is “Whiskey & Cornbread,” a rocking ode to the wonders of whiskey: “Whiskey is my long-lost friend. I’ll drink my whiskey right to the end,” gives you the story, sung with verve accompanied by jangly piano and staggering good-time guitar. A real bonus is the addition of the classic “Susie Q,” written by Dale Hawkins and popularized in the late 60s by Creedence Clearwater Revival. The Wailers do a fine job with this one, generating more Southern swampy atmosphere.

With this recording the band achieves a full and mature sound, satisfying and excit-ing to hear. With its no-nonsense drums, solid bass, complementary guitars, & re-freshing vocals, Empty Promises has ranked high on several national charts. ---JohN BERBRICh People who remember the 2000 Olympics

in Sydney, Australia, probably recall that they got an awful earful of the didgeridoo. The sound of hundreds of these things droning together like an army of gigantic mosquitoes was annoying and a bit frightening.

Well, I’m happy to report that in his latest recording, Show Your Love, Peter D. Harper gives the listener an earworm of the didgeri-doo. It’s a deep, droning quiver, and it fits with his global blues much better than one would expect. Its dry, jungle vibe sticks in my head.

Harper is pretty much the whole show here. He writes and arranges all the songs, sings them clearly (you can understand all the words), plays a wicked harmonica, taps out syncopated beats on the djembe, fills in the cracks with occasional keyboards, and lulls you with that soft-edged, shivering didgeridoo.

His band, Midwest Kind, is top-notch, featuring Will Rideoutt on guitar (fierce and funky), James Norris on bass (steady and snappy), and Cam Lewis on drums (re-

strained yet dynamic). Five guest musicians help out on “I Can’t Stand This,” a slow blues lament in which callous owners shut down businesses, stranding loyal workers. Each song builds heady momentum, starting with the raucous, full-throated “Hell Yeah” and continuing with grabby hooks right through to the mature “I Look at Life.”

Harper is positive. He wants a world of straight talk, brotherhood, and general good will. He’s so consistent and persuasive—conveying feelings of gentle strength—that you might want to vote for him.

Harper calls his music “World Blues,” which I think is a fair description. He’s got the didgeridoo from northern Australia, the djembe from West Africa, and the electrified blues guitar from the Mississippi Delta. And he sings with that One-World attitude, bring-ing everyone from everywhere together into a big group hug—at least that’s the idea. I don’t expect that to happen anytime soon, but it doesn’t hurt to keep on toward that good goal. And Harper and his musical men are leading the search to find a better way.

---DAVID WILLIAMSLast month I had the opportunity to talk

with a couple of Country Music legends on my radio show. First was Moe Bandy, he has a new album due out next month entitled Lucky Me that he’s very excited about. I had a chance to preview the album and it is a clas-

sic honky tonk album full of heartbreak, love and drinking tunes. Moe enlisted some pretty heavy hitters to join him on this album too. The Oak Ridge Boys join him on “Hell Stays Open” and “A Place To Hang My Hat”, the Rid-ers in the Sky teams up with Moe on “Long Lived The Cowboy” and finally Ricky Skaggs

helps out on “The Rarest Flowers”. If you’re a Moe Bandy fan you know what to expect and you’ll find it here. If you are just digging into his music, this album will be a good place to start but don’t stop there be sure to listen to some of his classic albums too. For your copy of Lucky Me you can go to www.moebandy.com

I also had the opportunity to talk with Jeff Hanna, lead singer of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. We talked about how the Dirt Band is celebrat-ing their 50th Anniversary this year. They re-corded a phenomenal concert at the Ryman in Nashville last September with many of their friends including John Prine, Jerry Jeff Walk-er, Rodney Crowell, former members Jackson Browne & Jimmy Ibbotson along with Vince Gill and many others. It was amazing and they shared it with PBS, well you only see an hour of a 3 hour concert but it’s still awesome. If you haven’t seen it, you are missing out! They are currently out on tour; in Nebraska they will be at the Wayne County Fair on July 30th, so keep your eyes open for a chance to see them. You can hear the interview with Jeff on my Sound Cloud site from your smart phone or computer

There are some new albums dropping this month that you may be interested in picking up an adding to your collection. On June 3 as I mentioned is Moe Bandy Lucky Me, Craig Morgan, A Whole Lot More to Me,

Dan + Shay, Obsessed & Maren Morris, Hero. On June 10th it’s Brandy Clark, Big Day in a Small Town and Frankie Ballard, El Rio. Then on June 17 it’s Jon Pardi, California Sunrise.

June also marks the anniversary of when I got my start in radio and it’s now been 24 years! Hard to believe that it was that long ago that I was able to start learning the art of radio in little Canton, NY at the time MIX 96 (WVNC). It was a little powerhouse of a station nestled about a garage in a small college town, but it had a big station sound and served the North Country well. I learned a lot from some great mentors there and that sent me off on my ra-dio journey throughout Northern NY and now Northeast Nebraska. I got the radio bug back in high school and it still pumps through my veins will ferocity today. I love it, made many great memories and friends along the way. I wouldn’t trade it for anything…here’s to many more fun years on the radio dial!

Thanks for checking out Dave’s Country Corner. I invite you to join me each month as we catch up on all thins country coming out of Nashville and wherever great country music is found. You can find me on Facebook – Big Daddy Dave Williams, and free to drop me a line anytime; [email protected] and I invite you to join me weekday afternoons from 2 - 6 p.m. (CT) on 106 KIX, you can listen online www.106kix.com. Remember to keep it real & keep it country!
