EDITOR’S NOTE

Honda has had a dynamic past and over the decades, we have created a global network of subsidiaries and affiliates, earning the company a solid reputation from customers all over the world. As we move towards the future, it is important to reflect and examine how we can further improve ourselves, to contribute not just to the organization but also to the societies we operate in. Like our founder Soichiro Honda so rightly stated, we should never be completely satisfied with our achievements as there are always ways to do better.

I believe that the way forward for Honda is to embrace an even more global perspective when it comes to our work philosophy. Our aim is to strive towards a common agenda so that all our employees worldwide realize our commitment to creating value and in ensuring greater efficiency globally.

One way to achieve that is by strengthening our communication skills. It is undeniably important for our employees to master the English language as it is the most universally accepted language. During my tenure at Honda America from 1982 to 1990 and again from 1994 to 2004, it struck me that while the production workers had very little experience to begin with, they were competent communicators who could engage in constructive discussions. That, to me, is better than a million “Yes sirs!”

Having said that, we should also return to Honda’s longstanding philosophy of ‘Respect for the Individual’, which comprises of three main pillars – initiative, equality and trust. At Honda, we are committed to creating equal opportunities for every individual. It does not matter if you are Japanese or a local employee; everyone in the Honda family deserves the same level of respect. By focusing on these values, we will surely continue the growth we have enjoyed.

Although I have only been assigned in our Malacca plant for a few months now, I am happy to say that the level of enthusiasm here is pretty amazing. As such, I foresee a bright future for Honda in Malaysia.

I sincerely hope that you will thoroughly enjoy this exciting volume of WITH DREAMS, which will speak of our local efforts in creating new value for our customers.

The Kampung Boy Who Never Lost Sight

Of His Dreams

The Kampung Boy Who Never Lost Sight

Of His Dreams

As a teenage boy living in Kampung Paya, Bukit Mertajam, Jamal used to dream big that maybe one day, he would venture beyond the borders of his little village and be somebody. As he sat on the verandah of his home with his younger brother, they made a conscious decision that day – they would learn to construct kampung houses to help support their family and learn to do it well.

That was the moment when Jamaluddin Bin Abdullah, 55, now a successful contractor living in Bukit Mertajam, Seberang Perai, found his calling in life. Initially the two siblings learned the basics from the village contractor whom they became assistants to. After a few years, they grew quite adept at their work and began to take on constructing kampung houses on their own. Soon, word started to spread to neighbouring villages of their skills and they began to get more and more work since their prices were reasonable and their workmanship was of superior quality. Jamal’s dreams were on its way.

Sensing his calling in life, Jamal as he is better known, then went through a host of government sponsored contractor courses to further develop his skills. “I worked as

Page 5: VOL.16 SEPTEMBER 2010withdreams.com.my/uploads/issues/con_14326117375563eb99685a3.pdf · living in Bukit Mertajam, Seberang Perai, found his calling in life. Initially the two siblings

a sub-contractor in Kuala Lumpur and Kelantan in the ‘70s and ‘80s where I worked on office buildings as well as landscaping.” It was in Pasir Puteh, Kelantan that he met his wife in the late ‘70s. They then returned to Bukit Mertajam a few years later to start a family, while he continued to expand his business.

Jamal worked his way up with steadfast determination and continuously strive to improve his family’s circumstances. “I was 11 when my mother passed away. Being the eldest boy among 10 siblings, I had to look after my family’s well-being,” he relates. It was not easy keeping the younger ones at bay, especially with all the negative social influences from their village friends. “I did not realize it at the time but it proved to be excellent training when it came to successfully bringing up my own kids later”.

Indeed, he and his wife have done well. Their two sons have attained success beyond Jamal’s wildest dreams. Their eldest, Mohd. Nasri, 29, currently works as an Offshore Engineer in Kerteh and is an Oxford double degree holder in Mechanical Engineering and Information Technology while their youngest, Mohd. Zamri, 28, is a Senior Research & Development Engineer in Kuala Lumpur. “It is all about instilling good values into their lives,” he says proudly, explaining that he was a very stern father as he was afraid that his kids would be led astray. “I had seen many of the children in my kampung end up as social delinquents, so I had to be quite protective for the sake of our family’s future,” he says.

He explains that his sons were always top of their class thanks to their self-driven natures as well as a little push from mom and dad. “My wife and I made it a point to go over their school work every single day and we even used to mark it, which of course drew the ire of the teachers, who several times requested that we meet with them for an explanation,” he laughs. But thanks to their guidance, the boys have their priorities in order, choosing to establish their careers first before pursuing things like buying a house and car or getting involved in relationships. “Since young, they have thrived on challenges,” he explains.

Jamal’s belief in attaining his dreams is also evident when it comes to his vehicle of choice. “Ever since I first set my eyes on a Honda in the early ‘70s, I have admired their advanced technology. They always seem to be ahead of the game,” he says.

After years of dreaming of owning a Honda, he finally purchased his first Honda, a 5th generation Civic in the early ‘90s although he had his eyes on the previous Civic model. “I have got a thing for the latest Honda models because the specs are always updated. So, as soon as the 6th generation Civic came out, I traded in my car for that,” he says. Jamal’s secret to being able to afford the latest Honda models is his innate ability to maintain his cars well, thus getting a high resale value. Since then, he has gone on to own 7th and 8th Generation Civics as well as a CR-V and City in recent times. “The whole family loves Honda cars and we intend to keep driving them for many years to come,” he happily says.

As we have learned from Jamal’s life, nothing is unachievable if one truly believes in their dreams. That belief has seen him grow from a poor village boy to a successful contractor while guiding his children towards becoming highly successful professionals in their own right. Kudos to Jamal and his family.

GREENER VALUESBUILDING

“It is penny wise to conserve and use as much natural resources as we can but we also have to take care of the greenhouse effect.”

WITH NEW 3S CENTRE“Work hard, serve well. There are no shortcuts to success.” Those were the mantra that Ban Lee Heng Motor Sdn Bhd’s Managing Director, Johnnie Wong reminded us as we walked out of his new Honda 3S centre.

If success is measured by one’s resilience and contribution to society, then Ban Lee Heng has certainly earned their reputation for upholding Honda’s commitment to achieve Customer Satisfaction No. 1 by being among the longest serving dealership in the country. Starting from a humble beginning of selling bicycles in the late 40’s, Ban Lee Heng evolved continuously with the Honda brand after it was appointed sole distributor in 1976.

“There were many difficult periods that the younger generations will not be privy to. Surviving through several economic downturns toughen our spirit. This contributes to Ban Lee Heng’s significant growth and improvements, which enabled us to achieve our dream of being a 3S centre,” relates Johnnie with gleaming eyes.

An authorised 3S centre is able to deliver Sales, Service and Spare parts under one roof, and is an initiative from Honda Malaysia to provide customers with better value and service. “It is every dealer’s dream to have a 3S centre and we are glad to finally materialise our dream,” says Johnnie.

Indeed, he has every reason to feel pleased. Upon reaching the dealership, you are greeted by a stately glass structure surrounded by bamboo plants which emanates an almost zen-like, minimalistic ambience. How ever the lovely new 3S centre provides more than just improved service, we discovered.

Page 7: VOL.16 SEPTEMBER 2010withdreams.com.my/uploads/issues/con_14326117375563eb99685a3.pdf · living in Bukit Mertajam, Seberang Perai, found his calling in life. Initially the two siblings

While constructing the new building, Johnnie knew he wanted to do more to enrich lives by adding his own contributions to reduce environmental impact. Thus, several green implementations were added along the way which drastically reduces energy usage and wastage.

According to Johnnie, the building faces the rising sun so natural light flows in till late afternoons and that is when they finally need to turn on the lights. This inspired them to find ways to conserve even more energy by using energy-saving light bulbs and self-regulating air-conditioning that is equipped with automatic timers that not only controls the temperature but turns on the air-conditioning only when necessary.

While the tall and wide building structure looks majestic, we learnt that it is thoughtfully designed with a rainwater harvesting system around the spacious roof area. This diverts up to a whopping 16,000 gallons of rainwater daily to an underground tank which then goes through a simple sand filtration so it can be used for cleaning the spacious service area and for watering the plants. “It is penny wise to conserve and use as much natural resources as we can but we also have to take care of the greenhouse effect,” explains Johnnie. “During the construction phase, we acted swiftly to build in an interceptor tank and oil recycle tank to filter hazardous materials so it would not be discharged to the environment.”

The green implementations have even made an impact on his employees. “The space is more conducive and the ventilation is better, so the staffs naturally look happier. Having observed certain habits, I would say their mindsets have certainly switched to be more in-tuned with the cleaner environment,” he adds.

Ban Lee Heng, according to Johnnie, will continue investing in cleaner energy, which includes using solar panels when it is economically feasible in future. “There is no reason to stay behind. After all, green dealerships are encouraged by Honda worldwide so we should be aligned in our pursuit of environmental sustainability.”

While it may take years before battery electric vehicles are a common sight on our roads, Honda’s tradition in vehicle innovation had inspired our research into electric vehicles since the late 1980’s.

More than a decade later, our experimentation and research bring to fruition the EV-N, a battery electric compact city commuter. Despite its size, the fun-looking, easy-to-drive mini car has a sufficiently large interior that is comfortable enough to fit four adults.

When Honda decided to create a concept battery electric vehicle for the Tokyo Motor Show 2009, the designer of EV-N, Kanna Sumiyoshi, took design cues from one of Honda’s classic models, the N360, a front-wheel-drive mini car that was released in 1967.

As Honda moves forward in planning new forms of mobility, size would be an important feature, especially for battery electric vehicles. A smaller car requires fewer resources, thus operating more efficiently to produce cleaner energies.

With this in mind, Sumiyoshi began her design process to make the EV-N that is not only a right match in our environmentally conscious times but also a desirable one that is fun to drive.

The EV-N is powered by electricity that is charged using a solar panel rooftop while the trunk space is in the front hood where the engine is usually placed. Sumiyoshi and her team intentionally left out the unnecessary extras to keep the car as light as possible but maintained some high-utility features like changeable seat materials and communication technologies that is aimed at signaling pedestrians when it starts and stops.

During the Tokyo Motor Show 2009, Honda Motor Co., Ltd. demonstrated how the EV-N was used with a LOOP device, a communication tool that is aimed at making the connection between people and mobility enjoyable. With the LOOP, the EV-N lights up to provide a signal whenever the owner approaches or walks away from the car while also offering other useful information in its liquid crystal display to show how much electric charge remains in the car, its parking

duration and the location where it is parked.

The design of the EV-N represents the direction that Honda is taking in the area of battery electric vehicles. We hope to continue dedicating ourselves to dreaming up new ideas and using our technologies to turn them into fun mobility products for everyone.

RACING DNA

The Honda Malaysia Racing Team (HMRT) successfully led the 12-hour Merdeka Millenium Endurance Race (MMER) 2010 from start to finish with 281 laps to win the championship title in the Touring Production class. The relentless action on 7th – 8th August 2010 at the Sepang International Circuit was indeed a weekend to remember as the HMRT reclaims the title after 2007’s victory.

“The team has improved greatly and worked hard throughout the year to rectify the minor errors made at last year’s race. All of them have done a great job, especially with a fully localized team! At Honda, it is never only on winning, it is always about rising above the challenges and going beyond our limits. This fortitude is deeply rooted in Honda’s DNA and Challenging Spirit in racing as we continue to compete at the highest level of motorsports,” says Honda Malaysia Sdn. Bhd. Managing Director & Chief Executive Officer Toru Takahashi.

It was an especially sweet victory for the team as they had heartbreakingly lost the title last year towards the end of the race. Chief Mechanic, Irwan, who was overcome with emotions, tells us that the team truly stepped up to the game this year. “The preparation was a demanding one. But despite the groundwork, we still encountered minor problems during the warm-up laps which got us worried. I am really proud of the team and I attribute our win to the valuable training which prepared us well,” he says.

Without a doubt, the 22-member HMRT pit crew, who also built up the race car, played a major role in the team’s success. Just who does what at the pits and how did they go about preparing for the race? Let’s explore their winning formula.the hmrt pit crew celebrates as the Civic type r Car 27 leads its way to

victory in the 12-hour endurance race.

HMRT’S METICULOUS PREPARATIONPAYS OFF AT THE MME

Page 11: VOL.16 SEPTEMBER 2010withdreams.com.my/uploads/issues/con_14326117375563eb99685a3.pdf · living in Bukit Mertajam, Seberang Perai, found his calling in life. Initially the two siblings

The HMRT pit crewThe pit crew can be categorized into two entities: The technical crew and the non-technical crew. The technical crew is directly involved with physically maintaining the car while the non-technical crew takes care of other needs that may arise during the race.

Overseeing the pit crew is the Pit Manager, who plays a crucial role in organizing the car build up, deciding on the optimum race strategy and communicating with the drivers during their break to better understand the car’s performance.

The Technical Crew• Mechanics: Led by the Chief Mechanic, the team

comprises of 4 main crews who ensures the entire car’s components, with the exception of the engine, are at an optimum condition throughout the race.

• Tyre man: Prepares the right type of tyres required for the race and ensures the tyres’ pressure and temperature are at an optimum level. He is in charge of making the switch between wet or dry tyres depending on race conditions.

• Fuel man: He not only ensures the car is fueled to a calculated level, but is also in charge of attaching and removing the refuel hose to/from the car’s fuel receptacle during the pit stop. As a safety measure, only the fuel man is allowed to touch the car during refueling.

• Engine man: Each time the car enters the pits, the engine man utilises a fully computerized data logger to diagnose any problems with the engine and to ensure that all engine parameters are running perfectly.

The Non-technical Crew• Pit wall (Time Logger & Lap Timer): Their role is

to compare lap times of the race car to diagnose potential problems, which will then be communicated to the technical crew. This includes driver alertness, brake problems and worn tyres.

• Driver assist: During driver change, he helps the driver get out of the car. After a refuel, he quickly gets the next driver into the car and fastens his seat belts and helmets in the shortest possible time. He is also the one who communicates with the driver during this process.

• Pit coordinator: In charge of the communication equipment at the pit to ensure crew members are always in touch with each other, whereby some crew are able to talk via their headsets while others are only able to listen to what is going on.

• Pit service team: They oversee all the pit crew’s as well as a driver’s needs, like food and refreshment, when necessary.

Engine Man, Thayalakumaran, 32

“I check data such as fuel pressure and braking techniques of the driver via G-force sensors to know what is really happening in the engine and how to improve it,” he explains. “The challenge is checking and diagnosing the problems in the shortest time possible.” More popularly known as Kumar, he is among the senior HMRT members who were sent to the Mugen headquarters in Japan for training in 2007.

Chief Mechanic, Irwan Abd.Hamid, 30

As the chief in charge of the technical team, Irwan keeps the team together to minimize mistakes at the pit. “At our Shakedown this year, we secretly simulated a problem with the car that caught the crew off-guard. We wanted to test if they were ready for the real action. I am pleased to say that our manager and advisors were very satisfied with the results because the team was well-prepared,” he says proudly.

Pit Wall Chief, Khairul Nizam Rahmat, 25

Khairul’s team comprises of two members who clock the lap time of the car outside the pit lane and relate their data to the Chief Mechanic. “I update the pit board with remaining lap times to signal to the driver so that he pits in at the correct time. It is really challenging to stay alert throughout the 12-hour race so we take turns to perform our duties in case one of us gets tired,” he says.

Tyre Man, Borhan Selamat, 42

The tyre man inspects the tyre conditions and determines the optimum pressure and temperature of the 15 or more sets of tyres prior to the race. “During the race, we normally change the front tyres about four times more often than the rear ones,” he explains. “I communicate with the Chief Mechanic and decide what tyre changes are required during the race.”

Fuel Man, Muhammad FaizulMuhammad Ghazali, 28

As the first person to get his hands on the car during a pit stop, his role is an important but hazardous one. “Did you know that adjusting the height of the tower and getting into the right position to handle the 2kg hose is important in refueling efficiently? It is all carefully thought out. I also ensure that the refueling tower is in good condition to prevent leakage,” he shares.

Since the time it was created, the Honda Civic has earned its reputation

of being a “people’s car” and highly regarded as a status symbol by

those who seek a stylish, confident ride. Throughout the years, Honda

has consistently incorporated the day’s most sophisticated technologies

into its Civic models, making its longevity in the global market a great

testimony to Honda’s advancement in being a step ahead of society’s

needs and expectations.

The 8th generation Civic has been available in Malaysia since 2008 and

it is no surprise then that the popular model continues to reinvent itself to

add value to new owners. In July this year, Honda Malaysia introduced a

new luxury variant, the Civic 1.8S-L, which comes dressed in handsome

new features that are set to provide an enhanced driving experience.

While the Civic 1.8S-L continues to provide excellent fuel economy and

quiet riding comfort from the unchanged 1.8L SOHC i-VTEC powertrain,

the steering wheel now spots a cruise control and audio remote buttons

to provide more responsive commands at your fingertips.

On the road, the new Civic 1.8S-L will turn heads with hints of subtle

luxury, thanks to the newly fitted chrome outer handle and retractable

door mirrors with side signal lights. Its sleek, aerodynamic form gives

it a performance edge but what the passerby would not realize is that

the Civic is designed with a forward shifted ‘A’ pillar and flat floor which

maximizes cabin space.

Once seated inside, the newly strapped leather interior provides

immediate comfort so you are wrapped in its classy ambience. Coupled

with the existing futuristic aviator-styled cockpit that is enhanced with

a metallic meter side panel, the new 1.8S-L looks complete in its

luxurious package.

Aside from the aesthetics and driving experience, let’s not forget that

the Civic is equipped with dependable protection such as advanced

active and passive safeguards like the VSA (Vehicle Stability Assist),

ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) with EBD (Electronic Brake Force

Distribution) and G-CON (G-force Control Protection) that works in

synergy to help you avoid driving hazards.

To reflect the dynamic personalities of Civic fans, the new ride is

available in vibrant colours from the current Civic line-up of Taffeta

White, Crystal Black Pearl, Alabaster Silver Metallic, Sparkle Gray Pearl

and Urban Titanium.

“I believe that the ingredients to success are dreams, bravery and ability,” says Jason Chia who is resolute on becoming a psychologist. “My goal in life is to serve others because you need only to contribute a little to transform lives, especially the vulnerable and helpless. By taking the first step towards getting a degree in psychology, I hope to do my part in creating a healthier society,” he continues optimistically.

The determination to succeed is undeniable, not just emanating from Jason but other scholars who are each equally passionate but lack the financial privilege or opportunities to pursue their dreams. Like Jason, Jasmine Natasha Rajah has a big heart and aspires to work with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) or United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) where she is able to fight for children and women’s rights.

“I was inspired after attending several workshops by UNICEF in high school. I am fortunate to have grown up to be an independent individual but there are many out there who are unaware of their rights, let alone dare to dream. I would like to empower them to strive harder to achieve their goals,” says the astute Jasmine who desires to help impoverished youths around the world.

“I count my blessings to have had a happy childhood despite not growing up in a conventional family. My mum, though a single parent, did her best to provide my sister and me with a sense of luxury, although not extravagant,” she adds. “We struggled with financial difficulties and when I was younger, I did get jealous of others who had no problem paying for things but I learnt to be independent, which is a value I instilled in my sister as well.”

Joining the other scholars is Narvinder Singh who has a compelling story to tell, having grown up in a farm. “Working with my dad at the farm was one of the highlights during my teenage years. Despite the hardship that we faced, my dad is a cheerful and principled man. He taught me early on that you can attain success by overcoming challenges,” he says.

The moment of realization came to him at the farm one day when another farmer was selling his herd of buffaloes. “A few groups of businessmen tried to capture them but gave up after several attempts because the animals became wild and aggressive. When my dad said he could catch the animals, others were not convinced. However he single handedly proved otherwise. From this experience, I believed that consistency, working smart and hard without giving up is the formula in achieving success.”

Overcoming a different set of challenges on her own is Norimanira a/p Nordin who had to leave her hometown in Kuantan for the first time to pursue a hairdressing course in Kuala Lumpur.

“I have never travelled so far in my life. To be honest, I was nervous because I knew no one in the big city. However, I am determined to complete this course so this is a test I must overcome. I look forward to securing better jobs in future once I graduate,” says the modest Nori who adds that she started working as a child by following her mum to the jungles to find rattan.

Growing up was not easy for Nori, who had to travel around to live with her relatives, while occasionally living between her divorced parents who had started their own families. “I only studied up till Primary 4 because I was always moving. It was a lonely time because there were long periods where I did not get to see any of my siblings. But we are closer now and I hope to secure a more stable income so that my parents do not have to work anymore,” she shares.

Motorsports fans prove their endurance spiritat the Honda Racing Ultimate Challenge

Honda Malaysia regains Customer Satisfaction No. 1

In the spirit of Honda Malaysia Racing Team’s involvement in the 12-hour Merdeka Millennium Endurance (MME) Race 2010, Honda motorsports fans took the opportunity to show their fortitude in the Honda Racing Ultimate Challenge.

The contest began with a quiz on www.honda.com.my where teams stood a chance to be shortlisted for a Go-kart Endurance Race at the Sepang Go-kart Circuit. 30 teams in pairs of two then battled each other on the go-kart for a chance to be among the top 20 qualifiers for the final challenge at Sepang International Circuit where they were tested on their mental resilience and aptitude.

The grand prize, runner-up and third prizes were presented to two teams each. The lucky winners took home an Apple MacBook, iPhone 3GS and iPod touch respectively but no one went home empty handed as the remaining teams were rewarded with Alpinestars’ racing gears for their efforts.

more information about honda’s racing DNa is available on www.honda.com.my and if you are interested to stay connected on our motorsports activities, please join us at www.facebook.com/HondaRacingMalaysia.

Honda introduced the HSV-010 GT in January this year to replace the NSX-GT’s legendary run in the Super GT International Series and have since completed up to Round 6 in August at Suzuka Circuit. The HSV-010 GT teams were here in Sepang International Circuit earlier this June for the Super GT International Series Malaysia, Round 4.

The stifling heat at 34°C proved to be one of the bigger challenges to conquer as it was the first time the HSV-010 GT raced in a circuit outside Japan. It was a close battle for the HSV-010 GT teams who displayed their intense racing spirit to finish among the top, with Weider HSV-010 GT emerging 3rd on the podium while Raybrig HSV-010 GT took the 5th place.

Breaking away from the mid-engine layout of the NSX, the HSV-010 GT is presented as a front-engine rear-drive Super GT machine in a new chassis. Fans will notice many changes and improvements compared with its predecessor. Besides the engine, the HSV-010’s chassis rigidity is enhanced while at the rear, a longer exhaust was incorporated to improve the overall power and ensure a significant exhaust sound.

Regarding other improvements, Honda R&D Co., Ltd. Chief Engineer, Masahiko Matsumoto, explained in an interview during the Super GT pit tour at Sepang that, “The torque output was increased and we have improved its down force capability. However, we want to emphasize that the HSV-010 GT meets specifications required for production, particularly the positioning of the engine and rear-brakes. These requirements are important to meet Super GT’s strict regulations.”

The HSV-010 GT teams will be competing in the final rounds of this season’s championship with the last leg ending at Honda’s home circuit, Twin Ring Motegi Circuit, before a non-championship special round concludes the season in Fuji Speedway this November.

Many people think of its predecessor, the NSX, as a ‘cornering machine’ andHonda was determined to build an ‘ultimate cornering machine’ with the HSV-010 GT

by combining new technologies with the proven technology from the NSX.
