3-Pandora December 2011

Dear readers,

Pandora is back again this year with a brand new team of writers, photog-raphers, and layout designers. I am very excited to present you with our very !rst issue of volume three. As you may know, Pandora was !rst established two years ago by a group of students who wanted to express their opinions about DCB’s student council, and as time progressed, the publication expanded into a platform where the opinions of anything in particular, especially issues at Dul-wich could be presented. "is year, our mission statement is that we are a student-led publication that expresses our opinions on issues that we think should be identi!ed, and this includes at DCB as well as outside of DCB. We will be bold and daring when we believe it is necessary but it is important to understand that our audacity is not for the sake of pushing boundaries but for the sake of our belief in the topic’s importance and well-deserved acknowledgement. "is year, you may notice a variety of di#erent articles and views as we have an array of writers and also an entertainment section with movie reviews, advice columns, interviews with stu-dents, and more. Pandora is a very open and welcoming student publication. If you would like to express your own opinions or are interested in photography, layout, etc. you are welcome to join our talented team of students. If there are any ques-tions, comments, and/or concerns, feel free to contact me directly at [email protected] or at our o$cial email [email protected]. I believe this will be a great year for Pandora.

Regards,

Yida WangEditor-in-Chief

!"#$!#%$Picking up a chickWhen there’s that light-hearted, airy feeling bubbling in your stomach as she passes by and catches your eye, you know it’s love. Regardless, that doesn’t mean you get to toss her over your shoulder immediately and proclaim her your wife. In this day and age, you have to win her heart; here are some tips on how to do it right:

!ou shalt take your time to know her.!is is reality, not a chick "ick – even then, there’s usually an entire hour dedicated to the guy learning about the girl’s likes and dislikes. It also helps you in winning her over; you can surprise her with no qualms about getting the wrong gi#.

!ou art no Chris Brown.Expressing your interest in her via abuse is more likely to win you a trip to jail rather than her heart. You’re not a child anymore.Same rule applies when you’re promising Forever. You don’t get to throw it around from Wall to Wall and make up for it with a Kiss Kiss.

!ou shalt not appear in front of her house unexpectedly.!is applies especially when it’s close to midnight. You want to prove that you’re a human be-ing with feelings for her, not a vampire with bloodlust. In other respects, it’s also unnerving and disrespectful for her. Inform her of your visit $rst lest she sets hounds upon you.

!ou shalt not gamble with the environment.Don’t ask a girl out by taking a walk with her in the chilly winter or hot scalding summer in Beijing. You don’t need to test out ‘till Death do us part’ yet.

!ou shalt not confess online and then log o".You’re asking a girl out, not insulting the biggest bully in school. Work up your courage to ask her in person.Word of mouth also says that she’ll be less likely to reject you in seconds.

!"#$!#%$ &'(()%*(#%+,

By Ginyin Lim 1213 LAT and Grace Chan 1213CTE

!ou art not Adam Levine.Don’t look for a girl with a broken smile and ask her if she could stay a while; you’ve got no moves like Jagger, you’re just creepy. Don’t ask a girl out of pity, she’s stronger than you think, and then you’d be in Misery.

!ou art not Shakespeare. You don’t need to write an epic poem to ask her out; simple does it – “Do you want to go out with me? ...Or not?”

!ou art not the embodiment of Big Brother (...nor Hitler, nor Stalin, nor OGPU, nor KGB).

You’re no dictator. Give her the option of going out with you. It’s a free world.

!ou art no Ash Ketchum. You don’t need to be the very best. You don’t need Masterballs to catch her, just your own. Be con!dent in yourself and your abilities to capture her heart. And make sure you get her before Gary does.

!ou art Yourself.Don’t promote a false image of yourself. You’ll only let both her and yourself down.Use your strengths (and to some extent, weaknesses) to get her, not your lies and fabrications.

Follow these Ten Commandments, and you just might be on your way to a happy relationship. Conversely, you could also ignore them and ask her out without even knowing anything more than her name, to which we give you a simulation of what’s to come:

Close your eyes.

Did you see anything?

!at’s your future.

We can never be sure that the opinion we are endeavoring to stifle is a false opinion; and if we were sure, stifling it would be an evil still. ~John Stuart Mill, On Liberty, 1859

Is the school uniform shop over priced? For everyone of the ten students I’ve asked, the answer was an immediate and resounding yes. A friend of mine recently wrote an article in Economania describing the school uniform shop as exactly just that – overpriced. How-ever- to her surprise- she was asked to rewrite that portion of her article due to it’s ‘o!ensive’, ‘provocative’ nature. It wasn’t until later that the true meaning of the event hit us – she was censored. Although infamously used by many a mili-tary dictator, (amongst the most famous: Mao Zedong and Adolf Hitler), the origin of censorship is belligerent in nature and can be traced back to the Greeks and Romans who established the ‘o"ce of censor’ in 442 BC. Rome. It was viewed as a means of uphold-ing the ‘moral code’ of the times, instead of an instrument to suppress the masses. We can de#nitely say that the censorship my friend underwent was an adherence to the ‘moral code’ of Dulwich however does the upholding

of that moral not lead to the suppression of the masses (i.e us, poor, opinionated stu-dents)?

For many of us, living in China means learn-ing to function with such restrictions; forfeit-ing certain freedoms we take for granted in the democratic world like the boundless joys of: Facebook, blogger, You-tube etc. arguably one could say that any school system is essentially a dictatorship, and censorship is a fundamental part of any and every education system. With school being the stepping stone to maturity, we must learn to censor ourselves naturally; we learn what is appropriate to say in appropriate company i.e would Mr. Nightingale and Mrs. Nightingale look like they would appreciate a joke about how their names correlate to a certain #ctional vampiric couple’s. How-ever, school is also where we learn to de#ne

‘she was censored.’

‘she was censored.’ourselves, where our opinions can be thought to matter, therefore making a censoring of information unfeasible?

Before continuing my rant, we have to distin-guish between a censor and an editor. An edi-tor may suggest ways of improving an article, i.e ways to paraphrase your opinion in a less o!ensive manner, whilst a censor suppresses ideas and thought deemed unacceptable. So I pose a question to you, the student body: should teachers act as censors or editors?

I remember when Pandora was "rst published, everyone in my year 9 form was in an uproar – a newspaper dared to criticize the student council?! And Pandora continued to impress, raising borderline taboo topics we giggled at. It worked, Pandora’s audacity was what made it Pandora, what made people remember and want to read Pandora and what propelled Jack Kim to infamy.

‘To Infamy.’What set Jack Kim’s Pandora apart from other student publications is it’s daring, its courage to push the boundaries and limits of acceptabil-ity. If we can’t even do that, what is the point of Pandora? What is the point of student–led newspapers?

To end this article/rant on an ironic, and some-what hypocritical note- by the time you read this article it would have been censored mul-tiple times. Let’s see how much I can get away with, shall we?

Romantic Comedies of 2011 Friends with Bene!ts - another !lm of two friends trying to accomplish the same impossible challenge as No Strings Attached - was a bubbly, saucy comedy with fast paced dialogue that grabbed my attention, but not in a way which kept me wondering what was going to happen next. "e !lm was very predictable and a bit cliché a#er having been released straight a#er No Strings At-tached.

Luckily the chemistry between Mila Kunis and Justin Timberlake was fun to watch; they managed to show the awkwardness of relationships while also dem-onstrating an almost perfect friendship. "ere are a couple of small appearances from awesome actors, such as Emma Stone and Andy Samberg. And the fact that the !lm intentionally makes fun of typical chick $icks also shows that Friends with Bene!ts is a little bit di%erent from most romantic comedies. It does have some partial nudity and sexual references.

Finally; Crazy, Stupid Love was a re-freshing change a#er this year’s selection of chick $icks. "is is possibly because it wasn’t too chick $icky. Steve Carell pulled o% his awkward-funny act again, which is fun for everybody to watch. When his character’s wife divorces him, he is taken under the wing of Ryan Gosling (my future husband) who plays a stylish womanizer that turns Carell into an equally cool Casanova.

"e story explored all types of love, new and old, while !nding the humour in each of them and mashing them all together in one hilarious climax. I found the ending to be a bit disappointing because it seemed as though the writers tried to tie all the loose ends together in a short amount of time, but Crazy, Stupid Love de!nitely had my favourite cast and was the most original romantic comedy I’ve seen in a while. I highly recommend it.
