1 When recent newlyweds Beth and Greg Montesano found out they were expecting a baby, they became ecstatic and eagerly awaited the 20-week ultrasound, which would inform them of their baby’s gender and general health. However, their appointment brought the Montesanos devastating news that their daughter was diagnosed with spina bifida, a birth defect that occurs when a baby’s spinal cord fails to develop properly and which can cause partial or complete paralysis along with other dysfunctions. They were immediately referred to the Center for Fetal Diagnosis and Treatment at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP). After a two-day evaluation revealed that Beth and their baby would need to undergo fetal surgery, they felt overwhelmed with the realization that a long journey was about to begin. The doctors advised them to stay within 30 minutes of the hospital at all times—requiring them to relocate from their home, which is over 60 miles away from the hospital. Beth would also have to be on bed rest for the majority of her pregnancy and would need Greg by her side in case of an emergency. As they explored their scarce relocation options, including renting an apartment or staying with a host family in the city, a social worker at CHOP suggested the Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House, where they stayed during the remainder of Beth’s pregnancy. Beth said, “Even as a nurse, I never thought about needing to relocate for a medical necessity. It would have been so expensive and cost prohibitive.” With four months left in Beth’s pregnancy, the Montesanos knew that they would have to take extensive time off of work. The couple even planned to spend the holidays at the House, so that they could stay close to the hospital. Beth said, “We had to come to terms with not being home over the holidays. It was hard that we weren’t doing our normal traditions with our families but the House staff definitely worked hard to bring the holiday spirit, so we enjoyed them. It was different but fun to spend them here.” Fortunately, the Montesanos had many visitors during their time at the House, including their parents over Thanksgiving. Greg said, “Everyone who visited us was impressed by the House. People asked us what we needed and we told them that we didn’t need anything because they provided everything at the House. I don’t think anyone really understands until they see it for themselves but when they walk in, they are always touched to see all of the support that it provides and immediately realize how amazing it is. We feel very lucky to have stayed at the House.” Besides providing many comforts for Beth and Greg, the House was essential to keeping both Beth and their baby, Emma Joyce, safe. One day, while staying at the House, Beth became dehydrated from being ill and needed to go to the hospital. “It was scary and I think that really made us realize how important it was to be so close to the hospital. This whole process would have been much more scary and difficult if we didn’t have the House,” Beth shared. The Chestnut Street House is located less than a mile from CHOP, which reassured the Montesanos that if any issues arose, they would only be minutes away. Emma Joyce was born at the end of December and the Montesanos returned to their home to after the doctors released them. During their time at the House, they found mutual support with the numerous families whose children are facing life-changing medical difficulties, and Beth found courage and optimism through the other mothers who were faced with very similar conditions. “It was relaxing to talk to others who understand. We were so comfortable. We made some good friends while staying there. It was amazing to hear the other families’ stories, there are some incredible people that stay there,” Beth said. “The House really became like home.” Volume 1, 2017 Beth and Greg Montesano at the Chestnut Street House. When recent newlyweds Beth and Greg Montesano found out they were expecting a baby, they became ecstatic and eagerly awaited the 20-week ultrasound, which would inform them of their baby’s gender and general health.

It would have been so expensive and cost prohibitive.”

With four months left in Beth’s pregnancy, the Montesanos knew that they would have to take extensive time off of work. It was different but fun to spend them here.”

Fortunately, the Montesanos had many visitors during their time at the House, including their parents over Thanksgiving. We feel very lucky to have stayed at the House.”

Besides providing many comforts for Beth and Greg, the House was essential to keeping both Beth and their baby, Emma Joyce, safe.

MESSAGES OF HOPETHE MONTESANO FAMILY STORY

The House has everything we need and we are comfortable here.

I am immensely proud and thankful to all the students who participated in the 2017 Read for the House program, presented by Beneficial Bank. Together, they raised more than $100,000, which will considerably benefit families staying at both of our Philadelphia Houses. I am also grateful to our friends at CBS3 and the CW Philly, along with our many sponsors that made the Eighth Annual “Change the Luck of a Child” Telethon a success. Due to their efforts, Ronald McDonald Houses in the Philadelphia Region receive vital operating funds and raise awareness every year.

The year ahead will bring even more exciting opportunities as we finalize arrangements for our expansion at Chestnut Street. As you may already know, our expansion plan includes a new, 88-room tower, which will enable us to more than double the number of families we serve annually—from approximately 800 to an estimated 1,900—and to increase our available room nights from 16,000 to more than 40,000 per year. The plan also includes wheelchair-accessible guest rooms, protected patient suites, an expanded kitchen and dining area, and new indoor and outdoor play areas for children of all ages.

We have an excellent team of professionals working with us, including architecture firm Ewing Cole, construction manager P. Agnes, owner’s representative Watchdog Real Estate Project Managers, civil engineers Pennoni Associates, and structural engineers David Chou & Associates. Preparations for construction are underway and you will notice that the lot west of the House has been cleared and some internal changes have already taken place.

Knowing that we could help twice as many families during their time of greatest need motivates us to ensure the successful and timely completion of this project. I would like to thank those individuals, companies, and organizations who have already made contributions or pledges to make our plans a reality. We hope that you will join us during this momentous time in the House’s history and help us make room for those families by supporting the Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House today.

To find out how you can assist the realization of this project, please contact Lawrence Jacobson at [email protected]. You can also find more information by visiting www.philarmh.org.

And, as always, we invite you to join us at any of our upcoming fundraising events—from golf outings to running races to corporate challenges, there is something for everyone who wants to help. Read more about our events in this volume and at www.philarmh.org/events.

On Thursday, February 9th, the Philadelphia Flyers hosted Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House Night during their game against the New York Islanders at the Wells Fargo Center. The evening, sponsored by our friends at Symantec, helped raise awareness about PRMH and raised significant funds to support the services that we provide.

The House was the beneficiary of the game’s 50/50 raffle, which raised $18,000 for the House! The Flyers also featured four PRMH public service announcement (PSA) videos on the jumbo-screens throughout the stadium.

Leading up to the evening, former Philadelphia Flyers player and Hall of Famer, John LeClair, visited the Chestnut Street House to have breakfast with our families and film one of the PSAs. As our newest PRMH Ambassador, LeClair’s PSA will help raise vital awareness about the House and our services and will encourage others to make a donation to the House.

We are grateful for Mike Kost and his team of students and faculty of the Frank J. Tornetta School of Anesthesia at Einstein Medical Center Montgomery and La Salle University School of Nursing for supporting our families as Guest Chefs at the Chestnut Street House for four consecutive years! The team annually celebrates Nurse Anesthesia Week by preparing over 100 meals for families to eat throughout the week. This year’s meal was themed “Football Tailgate Party.” Mike and his team had a blast decorating the Chestnut Street House and cooking up a wide variety of tailgate themed dinner items and desserts. Thank you!

The Adopt A Family Room partnership provides an opportunity for individuals, companies, and organizations to be the sponsor of a Ronald McDonald Family Room at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia or St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children for one month. Funding helps cover expenses that allow us to provide services to all of the families who will need to use the Family Room services during that month.

Our two Ronald McDonald Family Rooms extend the support of our two Ronald McDonald Houses into the hospital by offering a quiet, comfortable respite place for families to regroup during their child’s treatment—helping them to reduce stress and focus on their own health and well-being while they take care of their child. These welcoming hospitality lounges are designed to help families forget they are in a hospital setting, even though they are just steps from their child’s bedside.

If you would like to adopt a family room or find out more information, please contact Chris Callanan at [email protected].

The Adopt A Cabin partnership program allows you, your company, or organization to be the sponsor of one of the camp cabins at Ronald McDonald Camp. Your funding will sponsor all of the campers and volunteer counselors who call this cabin home for the entire week at camp. Thanks to the generosity of donors like you, last year, we had a record number of 245 children at Camp, with 69 new campers. The majority of the campers were children who were previously treated, or were in the process of being treated for cancer, and 80 campers were siblings. Individuals or companies may also choose to Adopt A Camper for a $500, tax-deductible gift.

To find out more information or if you’d like to adopt a cabin, please contact Chris Callanan at [email protected] or Lawrence Jacobson at [email protected].

The Adopt A Room partnership program allows donors to sponsor one of the 65 guest rooms at one of our two locations for an entire year.

In February, we proudly recognized the more than 65 sponsors of guest rooms at our two locations—Chestnut Street and Front & Erie. Attendees had the opportunity to hear first-hand from a guest families how sponsor’s donations have made their lives easier through a very difficult time in their lives.

NEW FAMILY ROOM AT ST. CHRISTOPHER’S HOSPITAL FOR CHILDREN

WE’RE SO THANKFUL FOR... CONTINUED

We are excited to announce that we are opening a Ronald McDonald Family Room at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children in April 2017! The Family Room will offer a quiet, comfortable respite place for families to regroup during their child’s treatment helping them to reduce stress and focus on their own health and well-being while they take care of their child.

The Family Room, located in the Critical Care tower of St. Christopher’s Hospital, extends the support of our two Ronald McDonald Houses and is designed to help families forget they are in a hospital setting, even though they are just steps away from their child’s bedside. This is especially important for families in the Critical Care Unit because their children often experience especially long hospital stays due to the severity of their illnesses.

Modeled after the success of the Family Room on the Oncology floor at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, the St. Christopher’s Hospital Family Room will offer an array of amenities including snacks, beverages, and activities, as well as support and programing materials at no cost.

Our Family Room volunteers are a huge part of what makes the space so welcoming. If you are interested in becoming a Family Room Volunteer, please contact Linda Parry at [email protected].
