Myers CocktailIV InusionWritten by Dr. JP Saleeby, MD
There is a treatment o rapid intravenous inusion contain-
ing high dose vitamins and minerals or the treatment or a
variety o ailments. It is becoming wildly popular and that
sparked my attention some years ago. There are hundreds
o physicians in this country that use it as a stand-alone
therapy or also as replacement therapy or those receiv-
ing chelation therapy. This inusion is something reerred
to as the Myers Cocktail or the Gaby-Wright Cocktail.
As ate would have it I attended a symposium in February
2001 in New York City entitled Nutritional Therapy in Medical
Practice given by non other than Dr. Alan R. Gaby. This sym-
posium was sponsored by the Beth Israel Medical Center and
St. Lukes- Roosevelt Hospital in New York City. Its ocus was
on nutritional therapies and nutritional medicine. O the ve
hundred or so in attendance rom around the country I was
hoping to bring back some real pearls o wisdom to Savannah,
GA. This most ascinating course included many lectures on
the importance o nutrition in daily lie and in treating and
preventing disease. Every lecture was supported and reer-
enced by evidence ound in the medical literature both in this
country and abroad. Alan R. Gaby, MD as well as Jonathan
V. Wright, MD are both luminaries in the ield o nutritional
/ integrative medicine and the conerence was illustrative.
Dr. Gaby would speak oten o the Myers Cocktail uses in hisclinical practice. First introduced by Dr. John Myers o Maryland
in the mid 20th century and then orgotten until it was re-intro-
duced by Drs. Gaby and Wright a decade ago, it is a mixture o
relatively high doses o ve vitamins and two minerals. Very
oten it is customized with varying doses o each agent and can
also include Adrenal cortical extract (ACE), Glyceron (an extract
rom the licorice plant named glycerrhizin, which by the way
has been shown by recent studies in the Orient as one o the
best ways to treat SARS) and Glutathione (a potent antioxidant).
It is quickly (within 30 minutes) inused through an IV and in
some patients the eects may last weeks. The theory behind
high dose and quick inusions is that these vitamins and minerals
are orced

trapped
intracellu-
larly, where
their eects last long beyond the expected short time ollowing
the slow inusion. Recently Dr. Gaby and Dr. Harry Adelson have
conducting a pilot study into the eects o the Myers Cocktail at
the Naturopathic Medical Center at the University o Bridgeport
in Bridgeport, CT. Independently, my center is also collecting
data on hundreds o inusions in my patients. The prospects
are exciting. Will the data back up the case studies and anec-
dotal claims that have been made over the decades? Double
blinded placebo controlled studies have yet to be perormed,
however, case studies speak loudly in avor o this therapy.
The treatment is recommended and has been used with
great success in treating Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Chronic
Depression, Fibromyalgia, Asthma (both acute lair-ups and
the chronic condition), Urticaria, Seasonal Allergic Rhinitis,
Chronic Sinusitis, Congestive Heart Failure, Ischemic Vascular
Disease, Dementia, Refex Sympathetic Dystrophy, Bronchitis,Interstitial Cystitis, Multiple Sclerosis and especially Acute Viral
and Bacterial inections. I have used this therapy to recover
people quickly rom the fu, acute Hepatitis A and B inections
and Inectious Mononucleosis. It has also be used to quicken
the recovery phase in elite athletes in training and during com-
petition. My experience with the Myers Cocktail in a variety o
orms and concentrations spans some 10-years. This therapy is
also being used post-DMSA chelation o heavy metals to replace
the good minerals and trace elements lost in this therapy. For
more inormation on the Myers Cocktail IV inusion please
make an appointment with me to discuss at WellnessOne.

Yusu M. Saleeby, MDMedical Director, WellnessOne
For more than orty years the drug named Metormin
(Glucophage manuactured by Merck, but now available generic
as the patent has expired) has been used to treat Type II diabetics
with great success. Unlike other medications used to lower bloodglucose levels, Metormin will not cause hypoglycemia because
it acts quite dierently than other classes o diabetic medication.
Observing the nearly 4 decades o Metormin use in overweight
diabetics with cardiovascular disease, hypertension and dyslipid-
emia brought to light the amazing transormation this drug has
on this group o patients with this insidious and lie-shortening
disease. Metormin happens to be one o the only drugs used to
treat type II diabetes that has an impact on reduction o death
by heart attach and stroke. While other agents raise the insulin
levels, Metormins mechanism o action work to make endog-
enous insulin levels more eective on a cellular and molecular
level by up-regulating insulin receptors. What is more, the ideal
anti-diabetic drug or type II should exhibit enhanced cellular
sensitivity to insulin (reducing insulin resistance and glucose
intolerance), inhibit excessive intestinal absorption o sugars,
reduce excessive liver production o glucose (gluconeogenesis),
promote weight loss and correct lipid abnormalities. Many unor-
tunately raise insulin levels, a condition undesirable as type II DM
has elevated insulin levels along with elevated glucose levels.
With the CDCs predictions that one o every three children
born ater 2000 will develop type II diabetes, this is certainly
a topic o paramount importance. Metormin answers the call
today as probably the most important DM II drug on the market.
Take these well documented positive nding or glucose reduc-
tion, reduction in insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome, and apply them to the non-diabetic patient. Several studies have
done just that, and a growing number o orward thinking physi-
cians are prescribing this drug as a part o their regiments or
patients over 40, with risk actors or diabetes, obesity and syn-
drome X (metabolic syndrome). It remains an FDA o-label use,
but that is not unusual or drug prescribing today. A good physi-
cian who is a patient advocate cannot wait around necessarily
or the FDA to approve drugs or certain uses. The FDA process is
unbelievably slow, ull o bureaucratic red tape and riddled with
political interventions by Big Pharma and other interest groups.
Three placebo-controlled trials using Metormin in non-diabetics
reported a reduction in asting insulin and c-peptide levels, nor-
malization o serum glucose and harmul low-density choles-
terol (LDL-C) and apo B levels. One o the three even reported
lowering o blood pressure and asting triglyceride levels. It is
shown time and again that Metormin is able to assist patients
with weight loss. Now with new biomarkers and gene making
eorts, it can be determined i a patient has the right gene that
will allow or most eective use o this drug. A blood test called
AccuType Metormin (oered by Quest Diagnostics and available
online without a prescription on eStatLabs.com or at our center)
can determine i Metormin is beneicial and eective or you.
Metormin has other uses too. It has been used to treat women
with polycystic ovary disease (Stein - Leventhal syndrome) and
inertility or menstrual irregularities. There are also studies pub-
lished in the medical literature showing Metormins activity
against cancer and enhancement o cellular immunity. Metormin
has been ound to suppress growth o some tumors and enhance
the activity o anti-cancer drugs. In one such study it reduced
the incidence o chemically induced cancer in laboratory rats.
As with all medication there are some patients who should not
take this drug and there are some side eects one should be

aware. For example, people suering rom sever liver and/
or kidney disease should not take this medication. Those with
a history o alcohol abuse should avoid this because o an
associated lactic acidosis when the two are taken together.
Additionally, people who are to take an Iodine-based intra-
venous contrast agent or special radiological examinations
need to stop the medication a couple o days prior and not
resume use or up to 3 days ollowing that type o exam. Theres an associated risk o kidney damage when Metormin being
taken when IV-iodine based dyes are used. One common side
eect is diarrhea, especially at the onset o use, loose stools are
common and dose dependent, but with time that goes away.
Finally, continuous use o Metormin will predispose a person to
vitamin B12 malabsorption. So people taking Metormin or pro-
onged lengths o time need to supplement with vitamin B12. By
and large this is a very sae drug and the benets attained rom its
use outweigh the relatively small number o untoward eects.
The multiple positive eects o this single drug (or its ability
to reduce development o diabetes, cardiovascular problems,
endocrine disorder, nephropathies, retinopathies, decreased
mmune unction and cancer, as well as weight loss) make it
a top disease preventing & longevity medication. There are
special doses recommended or the use o this medication
or prevention purposes and it is best prescribed by physi-
cians with this as their ocus o practice. It is a regular recom-
mendation in my practice as a supplement medication or
continued good health and with a simple blood test, it can
be determine eective in each patient on an individual basis.
