FFrroomm tthhee EEddiittoorr’’ss DDeesskk Holiday Greetings!

I must sadly report that this will be my last issue as editor of Free Rein. I had my third hand surgery in August and I am scheduled to have another one the beginning of 2007. I have truly enjoyed producing the newsletter and will definitely miss it. Carmela Bozulich and Roene Trevisan will be taking the rein beginning with the January/February issue.

The election of the 2007 Board of Directors was held in October/November. Congratulations go to Stephanie Bennett, Carmela Bozulich, Bobbie Curtis-Monteros, Peggy Hosking, Amy Miller, Shelley Sanderson and Roene Trevisan. A big thank you goes to these members for volunteering their time to serve our chapter. It is a tough job and usually a thankless one. So again, thank you!

In this issue you will find the results of the 2006 CDS-Pomona Chapter Year-End Awards. Congratulations to all!

This year we are awarding numerous All Breed Year-End Awards. These awards are still being calculated and breed registrations are being verified. Results will be announced soon!

In this issue you can also find chapter members’ results at the CDS Southern Junior/Young Rider Championships as well as the CDS & USDF Championships. You will find results from the Chapter’s All Hallow’s Eve Dressage Show as well as the Chapter’s photo contest. There is also a listing of chapter members who won CDS Year-End Awards.

Our Annual Year-End Awards Banquet will be held Sunday, January 14, 2007, at the South Hills Country Club in West Covina. Complete details are included in this issue.

The Chapter’s next show will be held April 15, 2007, at the Ridge Riders Arena in West Covina. We will offer our regular classes plus our Annual Spring Fling Parade. Come join us for some fun!

I want to wish each and every one of you a happy holiday season, good health and safe rides! See you at X!

Dressage is a sport in which a wide variety of breeds participate. One Pomona Chapter trainer divides her time between dressage shows and Appaloosa breed shows. She shows at both types of shows and her clients and their horses go along for the ride. This summer Tiffany Kell Brinton, a long time Pomona Chapter member, once again attended the Youth Worlds and Open Nationals for Appaloosas in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. She and her TK Equestrian Enterprises students enjoyed a very successful show with multiple wins including top tens, reserve and national championships. The schedules for these breed shows are a big departure from the dressage shows all of us are used to. Tiffany told us the first day of the show they began showing at 7:30 a.m. and did not stop showing until 3:00 a.m. the next morning. And then she had to be back in the main arena about 4:30 a.m. to warm-up the horses for a 7:30 am class call. Tiffany said, “We get a couple of light days in the middle of the show, but for the most part, if we are home by 11:00 p.m. or 12:00 a.m., we are excited.” Team TK came home with a total of twenty-two top tens. Some of the youth classes had upwards of ninety riders in them. One TK youth and one TK non-pro each earned a reserve championship. Tiffany personally earned two national championships during the open riders’ week. These two weeks also serve as a horse shopping trip with about 1500 to choose from. Tiffany and her group purchased two horses this year. The hectic show grounds allow one to observe theses horses in the craziest environment as well as see how they perform in the show arena. Tiffany explains, “We ride them in warm-up pens that might also have many people lunging, people practicing for the games classes, jumping classes and, oh yes,

the reining classes. So we get to see how they deal with a little bit of chaos you might say.” Oklahoma City is known for its ever changing weather, especially during the summer. The shows only experienced one day of thunderstorms, lightening and tornado warnings. The day they packed up was only 77 degrees, nicer than the weather in California. Tiffany said that all events are held indoors so the worst weather they get to experience is humidity when it is bad. Team TK riders competed in a wide range of classes including Western Pleasure, Hunters Under Saddle, Hunter Hack, Hunter in Hand, Saddle Seat, and Equitation. With multiple top tens and championships to their credit, no one can say that dressage has not been an excellent foundation for the riders of TK Equestrian Enterprises.

The results are in! A winner and runner-up have been chosen in the Chapter’s photo contest. A total of fourteen photographs were submitted by Chapter members and their loved ones. Contest sponsor, Janet Turgetto, carefully analyzed each photo before picking her favorites. Photographers’ names were withheld until the results were final. The winning photograph is “Hayley’s Comet” by Julie A. Haefner. The photograph is of fellow Chapter member Hayley Buckingham’s horse Hayley’ Comet. The photograph was taken at the Mid Summer Day’s Dressage show this past August.

Runner up was Karen Buckingham’s photo “Mirror Image.” The photograph was taken at the All Hallow’s Eve Dressage show. The photo is of Karen’s daughter Hayley, her horse Hayely’s Comet, and fellow Chapter member Lauren Palmquist and her mare Dejianna. Thank you to all the members that sent in entries and to Janet Turgetto of A La Roan Riding club for sponsoring this contest.

2007 BOARD OF DIRECTORS

ELECTION RESULTS The election of the 2007 Board of Directors was held in October/November. Congratulations go to Stephanie Bennett, Carmela Bozulich, Bobbie Curtis-Monteros, Peggy Hosking, Amy Miller, Shelley Sanderson and Roene Trevisan. Tiffany Kell Brinton was originally elected to the board but resigned her position. The vacated position was filled by the person with the next highest number of votes in the election, Carmela Bozulich. But do not worry; you will be seeing Tiffany this upcoming year. She has agreed to head up the Junior/Young Riders. A big thank you goes to these members for volunteering their time to serve our chapter. It is a tough job and usually a thankless one. So again, thank you!

RECYCLING DRIVE The CDS-Pomona Chapter Junior/Young Riders are having a recycling drive. All proceeds will help Chapter Junior/Young Riders attend the 2007 CDS Southern Junior/Young Rider Championship Show. Please bring your empty aluminum cans and plastic bottles (no glass please) to any Chapter event. Can’t make it to an event? Not to worry. With just one phone call or email you can contact a Chapter representative to schedule a pick-up at your home or business. For more information or to schedule a pick-up, please contact Tiffany Kell Brinton at 714-528-6036 or [email protected].

SHOW CLOTHING DRIVE

Do you have show clothes that don’t fit anymore? Colleen Walker is organizing a donation box for Junior/Young Riders who need assistance in obtaining show clothes. All show clothes will be donated to a Junior/Young Rider that belongs to the CDS-Pomona Chapter.

If you would like to donate any show clothing, please contact Colleen at 714-514-4853. You may leave a message and Colleen will get back to you.

For its 11th year, CDS will be hosting the Amateur Clinic Series. This year's southern clinic will be held at Kathy Pavlich’s Shadow Ridge in Highland. Mette Rosencrantz has been selected as the clinician. The clinic will take place May 17-20, 2007. Participants will receive three private lessons over the course of the weekend and are required to attend an introductory lecture and welcome session the evening prior to the first day of riding. If you would like to be nominated, CDS selection protocol requires that any interested Amateur (who can be a junior) who has not previously participated, submit a written letter of intention to their respective chapter (see form below).

One rider and one alternate will be selected via a random drawing.

Submissions must be received no later than January 5, 2007.

The drawing will be held just after the January 5 submission deadline. If selected, the Chapter will pay the $150 fee to the Amateur Clinic organizer to guarantee participation. The selected chapter member is responsible for his/her own transportation, stabling and incidental fees. If selected, please contact the CDS-Pomona Chapter treasurer to arrange for chapter payment to the clinic organizer.
