Kennedy Martin is a junior here at AHS. She has attended Altus High since her freshman year; she attended ACA until 6th grade. Kennedy lives with her mom, Kris, and her dad, Kevin Martin. She also has a younger brother named Kyle, who is 12 years old and two cats Charlie and Stella. Her family’s favorite thing to do together is go on family camping trips. She also enjoys hunting and fishing with her dad. Some of Kennedy’s interests include being a part of the AHS Dance Team, being a member of the track team, and partici-pating in the pole-vault event. She also used to play in the high school band. She plays the vio-lin and the flute. Kennedy was recently crowned Miss Altus Outstand-ing Teen. She states, “My dad

encouraged me to get involved in pageants and he always push-es me to do my best in them.” After high school, Kennedy would like to attend the Uni-versity of Oklahoma then go on to the college of dentistry to become an orthodontist. Kennedy’s favorite thing about AHS is football season and all of the school spirit that everyone shows throughout the year. Something cool Altus High students may not know about Kennedy is that she recently decided to join the swim team, and she is very excited to get involved in something new. What motivates her most in life is God, her close friends, and her family. Kennedy’s favorite quote is “Don’t tell me the sky is the limit when there are footprints on the moon.”

Colson Roberts is a junior at AHS, he has lived in Altus his whole life. Colson lives with his mom, Valerie Roberts, and his dad, Chris Roberts. Some of Colson’s hobbies include: hunting, fishing, playing golf, and snow skiing, which he enjoys doing during school breaks on vacation with his fam-ily. After high school, Colson would like to attend Oklahoma State University or West Point to major in engineering. In the summer, Colson works for his dad in the service department at Johnny Roberts Motors. Colson’s favorite thing about AHS is the deep passion that all of the teachers have for their students and for the subjects that they teach. It makes him much more excited to be in the environment.

Something AHS students may not know about Colson is that he has a huge family and over 20 cousins just on his mom’s side of the family. What motivates Colson the most in life is striving to have good work ethic and meeting his goals. His favorite quote is, “Saturdays are for the boys.” Over the summer Colson was selected to take part in the Hugh O’Brian Youth Leader-ship Conference. He submit-ted an application during the end of his sophomore year and was selected along with a few others to attend the event. The conference focuses on teaching students new ways to become a leader in their com-munity and in their schools. Colson states, “I am very excited to practice these new techniques and hopefully use it to make a difference.”

Clubs & News

Change is in the Air By Kassie Hurst

KAY Club is an organiza-tion that provides an oppor-tunity for young women to become leaders and get in-volved in the community. Girls wanting to join the club can go through “rush week” or can submit a letter to her class on why she would like to join KAY. The club is branched off into four groups for each grade. Each club will be working on various communi-ty service projects before the semester ends. Senior President Jayden Nolan states, “We are more than just KAY dances. We get involved when we can and love to help out our commu-nity.” Other senior KAY girls include: London Williams,

Vice President; Annalisa Harrell, Sec-retary; and Lynsey Sellers, Treasur-er. Over the past few years, KAY Club has made quite a few accom-plishments. They spent a Sunday afternoon volunteering at the animal

shelter, and a few years ago they ran a 5k for breast cancer awareness. This year there were 42 rushees who joined! KAY Club is a great opportunity to learn leader-ship, character, and positively influ-ence others!

As students have already seen, there has been a multi-tude of changes added to Al-tus High School. Grab and Go Breakfast, changes in dress code and having your phone in the hall are only a few of the changes. The grab and go breakfast is for the students who didn’t get the opportunity to eat. It also provides as a healthier option for most. The grab and go breakfast is located in the hall by the office. The breakfast includes whatever has been prepared by the cooks that day and is placed in a plastic sack. You can grab these delicious items between first and se-cond hour. You can even eat them in class. Hair color has always been a big controversial topic

among schools. Recently, there has been a student panel where stu-dents and teachers discussed school policies and decided to let up on our hair policy. It was decid-ed to let students color their hair as long as it does not seem to be a distraction. In the past students have not

been allowed to have their phones out at school. Students couldn’t go a day without getting their phone taken away in the hall or classroom for having it out. Now, individual classrooms can use phones at the discretion of the classroom teacher for educational purposes for which the iPad is not adequate.

month old daughter named Adeline Rae. Some of Mrs. Henderson’s hobbies and interests include watching and participating in sports. Also, she enjoys re-finishing old furniture and painting rustic furnishings. Mrs. Henderson states, “Although I enjoy all of those activities, I love to spend the majority of my free time with my family. Especially spoiling my sweet Addie Rae. She bring me great joy in life” Something interesting that Altus students may not know about Mrs. Henderson is that she played college basketball at Western, and finished play-ing at UCO in Edmond. She was also crowned Miss. Cali-fornia in 1996 and was fourth runner-up in Mrs. America.

FFA is a dynamic organiza-tion within agricultural educa-tion that prepares students for premier leadership, personal growth, and career success. To join FFA, students must enroll in Agriculture education classes. This week is the annual Jackson County Free Fair, some other upcoming events include: the Oklahoma State Fair and Tulsa State Fair. Dur-ing these events, students have the opportunity to show live-stock and enter projects and exhibits. In October, FFA will be attending the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, where they will be awarded a National 3-star Chapter award, which is the highest recognition a chapter can re-ceive. FFA is selling Blue and Gold and DJ’s meats as a fund-

raiser during the fall and spring se-mesters. If you would like to order any of these products, please con-tact Mr. Farquhar or Mr. Stafford in the AG building or any FFA mem-ber. The National FFA theme this

year is, “I can. We Will.” From this quote FFA students all over the Nation learn how to grow in their leadership skills by interacting with students from not only our school and community, but also our state and nation.

The Altus Lady Bulldog Softball team is off to a great season. The team recently received two new additions, Coach Bull and Coach Atter-berry. Coach Bull was as-signed head coach. The team is also happy to still have Coach Freeman working with them. The team has been prac-ticing since mid-July and fin-ished the summer with a blue and white scrimmage before school started. They won their first game of the season on August 8th against Empire with a score of 11-1. Some of the team’s goals this season include: working hard, maintaining their focus, having fun, bonding with each other, and playing a better season than they did last year. The key players for this year include seniors: Kelsee Baker, Kymbree McKee,

Cragin Steed, Alex Jackson, and Des-tiny Ware; and junior Kaylen Carrol. Senior Kelsee Baker states, “We have been through a lot as a team, we have had our ups and downs but continue to push through and play our hardest each and every game. And we can’t thank Coach Bull, Coach Atterberry, and Coach Free-

and Family, even without those words on the backs of their jerseys. Senior Gage Veron states, “I’m so ex-cited for this football season to start. I think we have a really solid team this year. We are all motivated more than we have ever been since this is our last year together.”

Ernesto works for his family business in some of his spare time. His friends, family, God, and coaches motivate him everyday to be the best. Ernesto’s favorite quotes in-clude, “You can’t soar like an ea-gle if you hang around a bunch of chickens,” by Coach Reyna and “Iron sharpens iron as man sharpens man,” Proverbs 27:17. Kimberly Martinez is also a senior here at AHS and has at-tended Altus High since her freshman year. She was born and raised in Altus. She enjoys eating, hanging out with her family, chilling with her dog Stella, and listening to music. She also enjoys playing soccer! Kimberly lives with her mom, step-dad, and nine year old brother, William, who attends one of the Altus elementary schools. Her favorite things about Altus High School are the as-

semblies, football games, and soc-cer season. Kimberly is not sure what ca-reer she wants to pursue after high school, but says she knows she wants to explore the world and try new things. Her mom motivates her in life to do her best so she can have a better life than her mom did. Some favorite quotes of Kim-berly’s include, “Never confuse a single defeat with a final defeat” from F. Scott Fitzgerald, and “If you can do what you do best and be happy, you're further along in life than most people,” from Leo-nardo DiCaprio.
