Out of the seven events the Kent City students entered, they received four first places and four second places. They will go on to compete at the Regional level at Ionia on April 20. Sparta F.F.A. boys attend State Convention Three members of the Sparta FFA Chapter attended the 43rd annual FFA Convention at East Lansing on March 24- 26. They met with some 1,000 other Michigan FFA stu- dents for the two-day session, which wss sponsored by the Michigan Department of Education in cooperation with Continuing Education Service of Michigan State University on State's campus. Greg Beuschel and Allen May were chapter delegates who helped conduct the business of the 10,000 member association. A highlight of the convention was the conferring of the State FFA Degree on 189 boys and the naming of Jim Byrum of Leslie as Star State Farmer and Dennis Matthews of Corunna as Star State Agrlbusinessman. From this group of 189 State Farmers,delegates elected state officers for the coming year. They are: President, Joe Fabian of Coopersville; Secretary, Richard Grill of Fowlerville; Treasurer, Elmer Gowell of Montague; Reporter, Dale Posthumus of Caledonia, and Sentinel, Gary Carmichael of Evart. State winners were also named in demonstration, farm forum, parliamentary procedure, and public speaking con- tests. Kenneth Cheatham of the American Farm Bureau Federa- tion was the banquet speaker. Cheatham is a former Star Farmer of America. Other featured convention speakers were Wayne Humphreys, National FFA vice president, Crawfordsvllle, Iowa; television personality and former Miss America, Miss Marilyn Van Derbur; Larry Nichol- son, Indpendence, Missouri and Albert LaPorte, Farmers' Home Administration, Emergency Personal Services to be offered by volunteers Emergency temporary services to aid those innoedin the area included in the Sparta-Kent City school districts are scheduled to be available beginning April 19, provided by members of the local FISH organization. Volunteers are donating their time on a regularly scheduled basis,pattern- ing their responses to human need after the ancient Christian practice of marking their houses with the sign of the fish to indicate a place where help was available to any who were in trouble. Emorgoncy sorvlros to be performed by the volunteers in the FISH program include: babysitting, reading It) the blind, single meal service, housework for the sick, trans- portation, companionship for the elderly, rides for shut-ins, referral service ( when professional help is needed). Alpine Baptist to hear former China missionary The Alpine Baptist Church will begin Special Meetings with a former pastor, J. Oscar Wells, on Easter morning at 11:00 a . m . These meetings will continue through to the following Sunday morning. Each evening the service begins at 7:00 p.m. Evangelist J. Oscar Wells went to China as a missionary after serving as director of evangelism at the First Baptist Church of Fort Worth, Texas. In China he ministered to the soldiers of Generalissimo Chiang Kai-Shek and served as missionary in a hospital. Here he met his wife. After a very effective ministry, ho and the other American mem- bers of the hospital staff were captured by the Japanese and placed in concentration camps. After enduring the experiences of these war camps, the U.S. Government secured their liberation and they were returned to China, but because of the rapid spreadof Communism and the mur- der of a close associate missionary by the Communists, Dr. Wells was forced to return again to the States. Dr, Wells has had a very successful ministry of evangelism In America, though his calling was to China. Nursery Is provided every service. The church is lo- cated at 692 Seven Mile Road, NW Just east of Alpine Avenue. The Pastor, Rev. Harold Knickerbocker, has extended an invitation to the public to hear Dr. Wells' messages. 4 Leaf Clover 4-H wins 100% Blue Ribbons The newly formed 4 Leaf Clover 4-H Club of Conklin exhibited first year clothing and woodworking at Coopers- ville Junior High for Achievement Days Friday and Satur- day, April 2 and April 3, and came away with all blue rib- bons, "Proud as punch" are these young girls and boys at their first endeavor on these projects. Members of the sowing club are Cindy Snowden, Lisa Fahling, Kathy Wlldfong, Terri Denhof, penny Fahling, Mary Denhof, Kathy Rltz, Jeanne Schaefer, Cathy Reister, Cheryl Wildfong, and Marcia Fahling. Woodworking mem- bers are Eric Baehre, David Beuschel, Tim Beuschel, Michael Fahling, Robert Krey, David Reister, Steven Rei- ster, Bart Preston, Kyle Preston, Ron Schaefer, and Kevin Youngquist. Special County awards went to Penny Fahling for stylo and to Lisa Fahling for construction. David Beuschel and Steven Reister were awarded County Honors for con- struction. Penny is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Roland 1 Fahling and Lisa is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Fahling, David and Steven are the sons of Mr. and Mrs, Walter Beuschel and Mr. and Mrs. Harland Reister. Mrs. Robert Beuschel and Mrs. Leo Wlldfong contributed much time and talent to the club. Misses Judy Krey, Marcia Fahling, and Cheryl Wildfong assisted the leaders. Mr. Leo Wildfong helped the boys in their first experience hi carpentry. Other fathers also ably helped him. Mr. and Mrs. Wildfong are both first year leaders in 4-H. Carnegie Spuria Twp.
