How do you say goodbye to a fine pastor and welcome another in the same article? Rev. Adam Mathes is one of the finest young men I know. First and foremost, he is a Christian - he follows Christ and worships the Lord. In addition, here on earth, Adam has served as a Marine Corps Officer, completed three tours in Iraq, and is now being commissioned as a Chaplain in the United States Navy with the rank of Lieutenant. This is no small achievement. Further, he has been accepted into the doctoral program at Emory University’s Candler School of Theology where he will study Christian History. Eventually Adam will be a seminary professor helping to train pastors in the United Methodist Church and in other denominations. These are outstanding ambitions and a grave calling for an outstanding young man. Bethlehem may never again have a pastor with the credentials and the military and academic integrity of Rev. Adam Mathes. He is a finer man than we realize and we wish him the best. And yet, here comes another: Rev. Matt Parker is no slouch either. I was thrilled when I learned the Conference might send Rev. Parker our way. He comes with sterling references. Of all the Associate Pastor candidates sent our way, he was our number one pick. First of all, he has a great name: Parker. I expect big things out of him! Matt has served at Simpsonwood UMC for 12 years; he has worked with the youth ministry most of those years, and he started Simpsonwood’s contemporary service two years ago. Similarly, his duties here are: Preach the 11 o’clock contemporary service; oversee our entire Youth Ministry (with the help of Dawn Bradberry and Amy Watts); and provide leadership to our church in the role of Associate Pastor. 2 The Bethlehem Star

Dear Family and Friends of Bethlehem First UMC,

It is with heavy hearts Sarah, Allen, Trap, and I

bid you adieu. This Annual Conference I will

receive an appointment to the US Navy

Reserves as a Chaplain. The Navy will be my

primary ministry setting, and we will live in

Smyrna, Ga. The Reserve duty schedule

will enable me to attend graduate school

full time at Emory University pursuing

a PhD in Historical Studies of

Religion. My ultimate goal is to

teach historical theology in a

United Methodist seminary or

college while continuing to

serve in the Navy

Reserves as a Chaplain.

The focus of my

research will be on

1 9 t h C e n t u r y

theology and Romanticism, with an

emphasis on Immanuel Kant and those

following him (known as the Post-Kantians)

including Fichte, Schelling, Holderlin, Hegel,

Schleiermacher, and British poet-theologian

Samuel Taylor Coleridge. Beginning in

August I will be sequestered away in some

dark library on the Emory campus reading

about a bunch of dead Germans and how

they thought about God. I am immensely

excited! Some of you who know me well

know that such dusty topics really get me

going!

We are eternally grateful for the relationships we have built here in

Bethlehem. Thank you for teaching us so much about the church. Our

lives are immeasurably more colorful for having served God with you and

for having journeyed the long road to the Father of Souls in your company.

Thank you for loving my family and helping to raise Allen and Trap to

become strong Christian men. I believe that fulfilling our baptismal vows

is one of the most important things we can do as a church, and BFUMC

provides wonderfully rich Christian soil in which our community’s little ones

can take firm rooting. As we say in the Navy, Bravo Zulu! (Great Job, or

Well Done!)

Thank you for being such a welcoming and graceful church who adapts so

well to change and who moves so willingly with the calls God places upon

you day by day. Change is called upon you often, and you do it with

aplomb. I believe that the challenges associated with change serve well

to tear down our idols and refocus our dedication on God alone. Many

churches experience fracture and dissension when change is called upon

them, but not Bethlehem First. BFUMC grows through it and trusts God

ever more. Fourth Century church father Augustine of Hippo

writes, “Our heart is restless until it rests in Thee.”

I am afraid you may have no idea how much potential exists in

this place to make disciples for Jesus Christ for the

transformation of the world. It is truly amazing. But then

again, do we ever? Do we ever truly realize God’s potential to

transform the world? Unfortunately, probably not. So we pray

without ceasing that God will remove our insecurities and help

us to trust Him more fully, ever leaning forward in hope that, as

our dear District Superintendent Dr. Gary Whetstone says,

“grace and peace may prove stronger!”

May the Lord be with you,

Adam

experience designed to reach unchurched and “dechurched”). Prior to joining

Simpsonwood, Matt was part of the youth ministry staff at Roswell UMC in Roswell,

Georgia, where his family has attended since 1983. Matt is married to the former Michele

McCarthy, and they have two daughters, Kayla and Ashlyn.

Rev. Matt Parker

Matt Parker has been appointed by the North

everyone will stay safe and

healthy, but if necessary, you

CANCER CARE GROUP

We held our first Cancer Care group meeting on

Sunday, May 19th. We shared thoughts and

ideas of how this group can reach out to

individuals and families to help them cope with

the personal challenges of cancer. If you are

facing a cancer diagnosis, connecting with

others who have been through the journey

already can be a comfort and support. We

welcome anyone whose lives have been

touched by cancer or those with a passion for

this ministry. Watch the bulletin for future

meeting dates. For more information, please

We enjoy welcoming new interested folks. Please feel welcome to join us. We will

There will be no Children’s Church on Sunday, June 30th, and all

be “Obedience to Christ” from Luke 9:51-62. Why not read

this ahead of time to your children so they will more readily

understand the message.

51 As the time approached for him to be taken up to heaven,

Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem. 52 And he sent messengers

on ahead, who went into a Samaritan village to get things ready

for him; 53 but the people there did not welcome him, because he

was heading for Jerusalem. 54 When the disciples James and

John saw this, they asked, ‘Lord, do you want us to call fire

down from heaven to destroy them[a]?’ 55 But Jesus turned

and rebuked them. 56 Then he and his disciples went to

another village.

57 As they were walking along the road, a man said to him,

‘I will follow you wherever you go.’ 58 Jesus replied, ‘Foxes

have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has

nowhere to lay his head.’ 59 He said to another man,

‘Follow me.’

But he replied, ‘Lord, first let me go and bury my father.’ 60 Jesus said to him, ‘Let the dead bury their own dead, but

you go and proclaim the kingdom of God.’

61 Still another said, ‘I will follow you, Lord; but first let me

go back and say goodbye to my family.’ 62 Jesus replied,

‘No one who puts a hand to the plough and looks back is fit

for service in the kingdom of God.’
