The FFA attended the Crop
and Forage show at the Bigwood
event center in Fergus Falls last
Wednesday.
The Fish and Wildlife Identi-
fication team (pictured above left)
took first overall. Michael
Maunumaki and Michael Van
Santen tied for first place indi-
vidually as well. The team took
the top seven places at the contest.
A few things that you proba-
bly did not know about our past
presidents...
~Ronald Reagan did stand-up
comedy.
~Nixon was a card shark. After
playing cards for a few months,
he ended up wining $6,000 in
poker games.
~John Quincy Adams wore the
same hat for 10 years.
~James A. Garfield was ambidex-
trous. He could write legibly with
both his hands. h t t p : / / w w w . h u f f i n g t o n p o

Presidents Day is celebrated
on February 20, 2017 with both
students and staff treated to a day
off of school. But, do you know
how this holiday
came about?
P r e s i d e n t s
Day is actually
there to celebrate
Abraham Lincoln’s and George
Washington’s birthdays. Lin-
coln’s birthday is on the February
12 and Washington’s is on the
February 22. Our government
combined the two birthdays to
form one holiday to observe.
This years Parent - Teacher Conferences will be held on Thurs-
day February 23, 2017 from 3:30 to 8:30 p.m. The high school Parent
- Teacher Conferences will be the big gym and the elementary con-
ferences will be in the teachers classrooms. The elementary parents
have scheduled times to visit with their child’s teacher while the
high school teachers and specialists have open or drop-in schedules.
A few parents don`t go to their child's conferences once they get
into high school. They may think that their teen-age child should be
able to know what their grades are and know what assignments they
need to get done by themselves. However, it is important for parents
to go to conferences so students feel better knowing that their parents
care about how they perform in school.
FYI to students: An important thing to keep in mind when think-
ing about your grades is that if you are in any sports or extracurricu-
lar activities, you are not allowed to play or participate if your grades
are unacceptable. Fortunately, you are given a set amount of time to
get your grades up so you can play again. Now that we are in the
third quarter of school we only have a short time of school left to
earn those good grades that we all want!
In this Golden Arrow article I
will talk about our senior high
Knowledge Bowl meet that was
held on Monday, February 13,
2017 in Fergus Falls. Sadly we
didn’t win, but we did get 5th, 7th,
and 14th place out of 22 spots.
Mrs. Kent is in charge of our
Ashby Knowledge Bowl team.
Every school that attends the
meet is allowed four people per
team. After taking a written quiz
you get your rank form showing
how well you did.
Once you get a ranking you
go into a room with two other
teams and try to answer 45 ques-
tions. To answer, you must hit the
buzzer before the other team to
guess first. After the 45 questions,
your score is tabulated then your
team is put against another team
that you score closest to.
That is done for four rounds
so you can get a better ranking
and try to be number 1. After all
the rounds are completed, the
people who got first, second, and
third get ribbons for doing the
best overall.
The next meet for the senior
high Knowledge Bowl team will
be tournament competition in the
middle of March. Good luck to
each member of the team.
The Knowledge Bowl team
along with Mrs. Kent, ate at B-
Dub’s in Moorhead after a meet.
Pictured below from left to right
are Sami Schlotfeld, Mikah
Burkhardt, Riley Grecco, Sydney
Jensen, Cody Fults, Austin
Walker, Michael Van Santen,
Vincent Finkelson, Maddie Bai-
ley, Caity Weaver, Alex Decker,
and John Decker.
The Weed and Seed team also
took first place overall. Cody
Fults took first individually and
Elli Johnsrud took second (below
right). The Small Animal team
(pictured below left) took second
place, and Jacey Schlosser (above
right) took second place in the
Discussion Contest.
Congratulations to all our
FFA teams for doing a great job!

Reasons to go bowling
1. Fun!
2. Don’t need to worry about
being rained or snowed on.
3. All ages can do bowl, so al-
most no one can be left out.
4. Meet new people.
5. Helps build muscles in your
dominant arm.
6. Relieves stress and anger built
up throughout the day.
7. Helps hand-eye coordination.
8. You can get a sick looking
bowling ball and shoes.
9. Learn different ways to throw
the ball down the lane.
10. Great for parties and other
occasions.
4 ways to shop smarter!
1. Keep health in perspective:
Although healthier foods are more
expensive, it’s okay to spend a
little extra money for healthier
food!
2. Scan the nutrition panel on
the back or side of the pack-
age. When you're looking for
healthy foods, be on the lookout
for products low in saturated and
trans fats and sodium.
3. Shop for produce strategi-
cally. Stick to in-season fruits and
veggies, which are generally
cheaper.
4. Opt for fewer ingredients. It’s
often healthier to go toward whole
foods, fresh fruits and vegetables,
whole grains, and lean proteins

Beware: Exploding Whales
New Zealand authorities is-
sued a warning after a mass
s t r a n d i n g o f
whales.
Beachgoers in
New Zealand have
been warned to
steer clear of exploding whales
after a mass stranding that left
hundreds of whale carcasses rot-
ting on a beach in the country’s
South Island. Reports state that
authorities are cutting holes in the
300 decomposing Pilot Whale
carcasses, popping the dead ani-
mals “like balloons” to prevent
them from exploding on the re-
mote beach on South Island’s
Golden Bay. http://www.cnn.com/2017/02/13/asia/
Woman’s cane has
hidden sword
Police in South Carolina be-
lieve an older woman who was 80
had no idea that she had a sword
hidden in her cane.
Canes come in many shapes
and sizes. Some are used by peo-
ple with disabilities as a crutch.
They have also been known to
conceal a knife or sword for defense.
When she tried to get through
airport security she was stopped.
The regional spokesman said that
things like this aren't actually that
unusual. This happened at Myrtle
Beach International Airport.
People are not allowed to
bring anything on board that even
looks like a weapon. If they find
toy guns or stress balls that look
like hand grenades they have the
right to take them away. Reports
state that the elderly woman
“didn’t even have a clue”.
South Dakota
Looking for a vacation spot for this summer? Go to the Black
Hills in South Dakota. You can explore Mount Rushmore. You can
also see caves, waterfalls, mountains, tunnels, bears, and buffalo in
the park. It’s not too far from Ashby, only about 750 miles.
Scientists create synthetic dart
frog poison
The species Phyllobates ter-
ribilis has one of the strongest
poisons in the world. It is a batra-
chotoxin, colorless or milky se-
cretions from glands located on
the back and behind the ears of
frogs from the genus Phyllobates.
Though the frog does not
produce the toxin itself, it is be-
lieved to be derived from the
insects they eat. The only way for
the toxin to hurt you is if it gets
into your bloodstream.
This toxin also helps them get
their name as hunters would coat
their arrows in the poison. The
toxin attaches to the proteins that
are responsible for electrical im-
pulses in the nerves and muscles,
it can cause impulses, paralysis,
and heart attacks. h t t p : / / www. r e p t i l e s ma g az i ne . co m/

Fishing is one of the most
popular outdoor activities in Min-
nesota, where fishermen work the
state's lakes, rivers and streams.
There are many regulations in the
state. There is a certain number of
fish anglers can keep, restrictions
on the equipment they can use,
and times of the year when fish-
ing is not allowed.
The daily walleye limit is six;
northern pike is three; muskie is
one; smallmouth and largemouth
bass is six; crappie is 10; sunfish
is 20; and perch is 20.
Fishing license prices will be
going up in the state of Minnesota
for anglers now in 2017.
Boston Bruins Fire Coach
It is big news that the Boston
Bruins have fired coach Claude
Julien after almost 10 seasons.
There is absolutely no dispute
that Julien is a very good NHL
coach, one of the best in fact. It’s
also pretty difficult to understand
that much of the decline of the
Bruins is his fault.
The Bruins have become old
and slow and have allowed some
of their best young players to
leave without adequately replac-
ing them.
The largest known land gas-
tropod/snail is the African Giant
Snail. The largest recorded speci-
men of this species measured 15.5
inches from snout to tail when
fully extended. Its shell length
was 10¾ inches and it weighed
exactly 2 pounds.
The most dangerous ant in the
world is the Bulldog Ant found
along the coast in Australia. In
attacks it uses its sting and jaws at
the same time. There have been at
least three human deaths since
1936. Its body length is 0.07 in.,
weight is 0.0005 oz., and its life-
span is 21 days. It was discovered
in 1793.
The Minnesota Wild are 37-
12-6 with 80 points in 57 games
this season.
Mikael Granlund leads the
Wild with 50 points 16 goals and
34 assists. Nino Neiderreiter
leads the Wild with 16 goals.
Deven Dubnyk leads the Wild and
the NHL with 31 wins as of Feb-
ruary 13, 2017.
The Minnesota Wild played
the Anaheim Ducks on February
14. The Ducks are 29-18-10 and
2nd in the Pacific Division.
Dakota Ecker is a 10th grader.
He has been playing basketball
since he was in the 4th grade. His
position on the team is a guard.
His favorite thing about play-
ing for Ashby is you get a lot of
playing time and you get to be
with your friends.
He began playing basketball
because he liked to watch it. He
likes playing Wheaton because it
is a winnable game.
His advice to younger players
is, “Put in 100% of your effort.”

Amelia Barry is a 9th grader,

since 3rd grade.
Her favorite thing about play-
ing Ashby sports is being with
her friends. She began playing
this sport because she likes to be
active. She dislikes playing WCA
because she has friends that are
from there.
Her advice to younger players
is, “Never give up, even if it

his intelligence gathering.
He was hanged on September
22, 1776 by Howe and upon his
hanging he spoke of his love for
America by saying, “I only regret

closely resembles a mix of Mine-

Scorched earth is based off of

The center is the biggest of all

If you’re looking for an ador-
able craft to make for a loved one,
then you can make a Marshmal-
low Love Bug! What you need is:
Marshmallows
Lollipop sticks Pink sprinkles
Mini gumdrops
Black edible marker Spaghetti noodles
Light corn syrup
Put two marshmallows on a
lollipop stick. Dip them into a
bowl of water and remove them
quickly.
Dip the wet marshmallows
into a bowl of pink sprinkles. Use
the marker to add two black dots
to two white heart sprinkles.
Use a toothpick to dab dots of
corn syrup on the back of the eyes
and stick them onto the marsh-
mallow.
Cut two mini gum drops in
half horizontally and attach to a
small piece of dried spaghetti and
stick them into the top of the
marshmallow.
