Jagger's first solo single (apart from his MemoFrom Turner single years ago) is Europe'shottest record this week, closely followed byCommodores and David Bowie. While DonHenley is new in the Airplay Top 10, his partnerin The Eagles Glenn Frey is picking up a lot ofmajor tips in Europe this week with The Heat IsOn from the MCA Soundtrack The BeverleyHills Cop, We expect that this soundtrack willscore high in Europe as it contains other chartcontenders like The Pointer Sisters (NeutronDance), New Edition (Mr. Telephone Man),Junior (Do You Really) and Patti Labelle (NewAttitude). Another soundtrack Paris, Texas (theWrm Wenders film) for which Ry Cooder wrotethe music is receiving a lot of tips as well thisweek.Suggs and Carl from Madness are the twopeople behind the act the Fink Brothers withthe single Mutants In Mega -City One. It is aheavy weight electro dance track featuringJudge Dredd who is defending Mega City -Onefrom invading Mutants. All done very witty anda nice novelty track. Former teeny -bop starDavid Cassidy is back atter so many years witha new single entitled The Last Kiss. Andalthough the song buitts up very slow, itgrows on you after a few plays. New Chrysalissigning Go West (described by Ant Mardin as'Modem Motown') have a track out called WeClose Our Eyes, a good energetic dance trackwhich could do very well in the clubs. SecondImage is a group on MCA who have a song out
called Starting Again and it all sounds verySolar -like (Shatamar, Whispers, etc.). A fot ofnew danceable products we like: Cashmere'sCan I, Dark City's False Alarm and Loose Ends'Hangin' On A String. Al very sophisticated andalso appropriate for club play.Eric Carmen, ex -Raspberries, is back with hisfifth solo album being a delicate balancebetween uptempo and romantic popsongs, allcarefully arranged and stylished. Best cuts: IWanna Hear It From Your Ups (single), I'mThrough With Love and our favourite ComeBack To My Love, which sounds very close toMichael McDonald.
ALL OVER THE PLACEAs already mentioned in our last issue weabsolutely love the Bangles' album All OverThe Place. Although all of the compositions onthe album sound somewhat primitive, these 4girls from the US combine the influences of theMama's & The Papa's, Tom Verlaine and theMersey sound of the Sixties into quite anexciting sound. We recommend you to checkout songs like James (on which Susanna has avoice very close to that of Sally Carr- of MiddleOf The Road fame), Dover Beach, Going DownTo Liverpool (very 6 T's) and More Than MeetsThe Eye (in which their raunchier side suddenlyis replaced by a ballad, full with strings and acappella vocal work). Products expected toenter the airplay chart soon, include Santana'sSay It Again, Madonna's Material Girl, PeterWolf's tribute to Motown Baby Please Don'tLet Me Go, Little River Band who are nowabbreviated to LIRE (Is that a sound marketingdecision we wonder?) with Playing To Win andCyndi Lauper with the live version of Money
Changes Everything.Much is expected from the Swiss group Yellowith their new album Stella. It's is this weeksfastest mover in the Top 100 Albums. AnotherSwiss artist, Andreas Voilenweider is enjoyinglots of success lately in the US; he is the firstCBS artist who is charted with two albums(Behind The Gardens/Caverna Magica) in 3different catogories (ja77, classical and pop).
ERRATIC PATHThe success of the Euro-Crossover hitFotonovela (tipped by us weeks and weeksago) has followed a rather erratic path. Comingfrom Spain it first charted in the Benelux, thanslowly hit France and is now entering high inGermany and therefore a big mover this weekin the European Top 100 (from 39 to 15).While Sade is about to break in the US and isgetting lots and lots of media coverage, it isnice to see her album at the top of theEuropean Top 100. And from Sade's uniquevocals it is not a big step to Joan Armatrading,her new album Secret Secrets is 2nd best newentry this week. And although for us she haslost a bit of her initial charm moving more andmore into a broader (American) sound, we stilllove her best in tracks like One Night andFriends Not Lovers.One group that might break big outside of theUK the coming months is King. Although weare not too sure Europe will go for the trend ofthe painted boots (have you seen the video?),all signs are clear that his current UKhitsuccess Love And Pride (no 2) will spreadaround. The single was produced by RichardJames Burgess who has worked in the pastwith acts like Adam Ant and Spandau Ballet.

Well as reported in this column some time before Christmas, JessieBrandon has now officially joined Capital Radio from the pirate stationLaser Radio. In doing so, she becomes the first dj from a pirate radio tojoin commercial radio in a very long time. Welcome to legal radio Jessie,and I think you have a great future in the U.K.Talking of pirate radio, several land based pirate stations were raidedrecently. Radio Jackie was one of those stations, and also the longestserving land based pirate radio station in the country notching up almostfifteen years of broadcasting. Incidently thirty six hours after they wereraided, and had their records and transmitter confiscated, yes guesswhat ... they were raided for a second time.Gary Byrd who has been sitting in for Steve Wright on Radio One recentlydid a fine job. Let's hope that he will do some more daytime shows forRadio One. While on the subject of Radio One, former breakfast showhost Noel Edmunds, who now does mainly television shows sat in forMike Read just for one week.Orange Juice announced that they were splitting up recently at their gigat the academy in Brixton. New plans for the various members of theband to be announced soon. King are currenly on a lengthy tour of theU.K. following the success of their recent best selling single in theNational Charts.The most unusual collaboration at the moment is between Gary Numan,and Bill Sharpe of Shakatak, it's called Change Your Mind (Polydor).Maybe this is going to be the new trend for 1985, can you imaginerecords from Madness and Gary Glitter, or Duran Duran and CliffRichard. The mind boggles.Some other new singles out at the moment are from the Fink Brotherswho are actually Carl and Suggs of Madness. John Taylor and AndyTaylor of Duran Duran have got together with Robert Palmer and TonyThompson of Chic to form a part- time band called Powerstation. Thesingle is released now and is entitled Some Like It Hot. New fromMadonna will be Material Girl. From Elton John there is Breaking Hearts(Ain't What They Used To Be). Also the debut single that I suggest youlook out for from new Epic signing The Roaring Boys. You mayremember me mentioning them some time ago. The band are managedby Billy Gaff, and produced by Glyn Johns. The single is entitled EverySecond Of The Day. From Virgin Records Loose Ends are back with theirnew single and also from Virgin look out for a new band called Dark City.New albums to look out for from Shakatak, Kane Gang, GrandmasterFlash, and the first album in the ten years from John Fogerty formerly withCreedence Clearwater Revival (one of my all time favourite bands). AlanParsons Project and also Joan Armatrading has her new single andalbum released this month via A&M Records. Joan will also be doing anational tour.Some new bands to look out for in 1985 are definitely new CBS signingJimmy Jimmy, they will have product out soon. Likewise, SpellboundRecords have a band called National Pastime, who have released acouple of singles so far, and also The Red Guitars, who are set to releasea new single on their own label during March. Polydor have a new actcalled Two People that look promising and also look out for a band calledYes Lets who currently have a single released, and are on tour for thenext month. Also look out for Instinct on ZTT.Meanwhile back at Radio London, Tony Blackburn's Soul Night Out hasreturned, with lots of guest artists doing personal appearances. SusieBarnes is off the air for a while while she recovers from an operation, allthe best to you Susie. Guy Hornsby will be sitting in. Over at TVAM,Tommy Boyd has taken over the slot vacated by Timmy Mattett for theWide Awake Club. By the way, TVAM have just celebrated their secondbirthday, and viewing figures put them ahead of BBC Breakfast Time.And finally Radio Luxembourg have lost the services of Tony Fox, theman who could organize anything from a Boy George lookalike to a herdof cattle by making just one phone call. He has gone to pastures new toassist Michael Cohen, who amongst others manages Mike Read andBruno Brooks at Radio One.
