Upfrontby Emmanuel Legrand, Music & Media editor -in -chief

What a strange world we are living in.A couple of years ago, the new economy was setting

the pace-and it was a furious one. The Internet bubblewas inflating, boosting the overall economy-though arti-ficially-and turning IT geeks, merchant bankers, stockbrokers and anyone who had a crazy idea into million-aires. Huge conglomerates-such as AOL Time Warner-were created overnight on the premise that the old econ-omy was a refuge for dinosaurs and that the new modelwas transforming the world.

It did indeed transform the world-but it was into amadhouse where people fuelled by greed and a sense oftotal impunity, especially those in charge of big corpora-tions, lost track with reality and no longer had a sense ofvalues. They were living in a world of their own whereeasy money turned heads too easily, and no safeguardsremained. They thought they owned the world, theythought they could do no wrong.

And now payback time has arrived. With the bubble bursting, attention turned to the bru-

tal reality of sound accounting practices. The viability of

some deals that initially appeared brilliant when busi-ness was surfing on the crest of a wave (but looked dubi-ous when cash became scarce and share values wentdown the toilet) came under intense scrutiny.

What is happening at Vivendi Universal, AOL TimeWarner and a few other corporations is a painful-butmuch needed-settlement of errors and misjudged deals(and in some cases dodgy accounting procedures) fromthe very recent past.

Management changes at both Vivendi and AOLTW-almost at the same time-signal that playtime isofficially over. In the former case, the only way forwardis to dispose of some assets to reduce debt; in the lat-ter, it is as much a return to sound financial practicesas it is a strategic review of the company's priorities. The AOL guys who were running the show have nowbeen replaced by executives whocome from the old model, when con-tent was king and not simply fodderfor new platforms.

It will take a long while before wecan assess what effect this era willhave on the overall economy, butfrom all this turmoil something goodmight come-the return to somebasic business principles and values. But at a very big cost!

Italy rejects lowering music VAT rateby Mark Worden

MILAN - The Italian governmenthas rejected a demand tolower the rate of VAT onmusic product in the coun-try, despite expressing itssupport for the principle ofCDs being taxed the sameas other cultural goods, and for the EU's plan toharmonise VAT rates.

The government's rejec-tion of a call by oppositionparties to lower VAT from its cur-rent 20% rate came despite assur-ances to industry representatives inMarch by culture minister GiulianoUrbani that the government wouldlower the tax to 10% "by the sum-

mer" (M&M, March 15).The parliamentary motion called

for VAT on music to be lowered to4%, the same level as .thatfor books and other "cul-tural products". The gov-ernment's under-secretaryfor economics and financeDaniele Molgora cited theEU's directive whichallows individual membersto lower VAT on certainproducts, but said that thislist did not include CDs.

Molgora did express support, however, for the EU's plan to createa single level of sales tax on CDsacross Europe, which would mean areduction in the case of Italy, whichhas one of the highest levels of tax

on music in Europe.Director-general of Italian labels'

body FIMI Enzo Mazza (pictured)tells M&M: "The government'srejection of the motion is obviouslyvery disappointing, given the indus-try's current crisis, even if its sup-port for the EU plan to unify thesales tax has to be seen in a positivelight." French minister of culture andcommunication Jean -Jacques Ail-lagon has also backed the EU'smove to harmonise VAT rates acrossEurope. Aillagon says that while theproblem is "complex", he will dis-cuss the issue with his colleaguesfrom the other EU countries to tryto reach unanimous agreement onharmonisation.

LONDON - The 70% drop inEMI's share price from apeak in January 2000 isconsistent with that ofother publicly -tradedmedia companies, EMIGroup chairman Eric Nicoli(pictured) toldshareholders atthe company'sannual meeting inLondon on July 19.

Nicoli said thatEMI had outper-formed its rivalsAOL Time Warner,Vivendi Universaland Sony, and is now posi-tioned to approach thefuture with confidence, having undertaken wide-ranging restructuring. Nicoli countered criti-

Describing EMI MusicPublishing chairman MartyBandier as "the best musicpublisher in the whole

On the Recorded Musicside, the company wants toachieve an 11-13% operat-ing margin within threeyears. Berry's successor asRecorded Music chairman,Alain Levy, reported thatinroads were being madeinto the issue of piracy, with new copy protectiontechnology being used, andanti -theft technologies andpractices being introducedto counter internet piracy. There was also a drive topromote enforcement mea-sures with governmentsthat he did not see as doingenough to combat piracy.

Cadena 100 moves ahead in adult marketby Howell Llewellyn

MADRID - AC network Cadena100 has regained its historic posi-tion as Spain's third most popularmusic station from SER's AC/GoldM-80 Radio, as the fierce ratingstussle between the two adult musicnetworks continues.

Cadena 100,which dominatedthe adult musicmarket between1994 and 2000, belongs to Catholicchurch -run Cadena COPE, and isthe only one of Spain's top fivenational music radio networkswhich is not part of the powerfulSER radio group.

In the April -June 2002 surveyfrom official ratings body EGM,Cadena 100 gained 48,000 dailylisteners compared to the January -March 2002 survey, to stand at787,000 listeners per day. M-80, onthe other hand, lost 106,000 dailylisteners at 767,000.

Cadena 100 director Jordi

Casoliva says he is "delighted" bythe figures, which show "the con-solidation of our presenters andquality of content," although M-80deputy director Jose MiguelUcenda notes that the accumulat-ed EGM figures covering the past12 months still put M-80 ahead ofCadena 100. He also points out

that M-80 onlyhas 35 affiliatestations acrossthe country, com-

pared to Cadena 100's 56. "Ournational coverage is smaller thanany other generalist network, andstation -for -station we have one ofthe biggest audiences. Our priorityis to gain more stations and covermore areas."

SER's CHR market -leader Los40 Principales, which has in excessof 70 stations, was down by100,000 daily listeners at 2.8 mil-lion, while SER's latinotion Cadena DIAL (80 stations)held steady with nearly 1.6 milliondaily listeners.

Revival in fortunes forItalian music stationsby Mark Worden

MILAN - Most of Italy's nation-al music networks, and in par-ticular the Espresso/Elemediagroup's Radio Capital, enjoyedaudience gains in the secondquarter of 2002, according tolatest ratings figures fromAudiradio.

This was in marked contrastto the figures for the first quar-ter of 2002 (M&M, April 27), in

which most commercial musicnetworks had suffered a sharpdrop in audience. The latestresults, based on telephoneinterviews conducted betweenApril 6 and June 14, revealedan estimated overall daily radioaudience in the region of 35.6million.

Rome -based AC/Gold net-work Radio Capital saw itsdaily audience rise by 20%, from1.4 million to 1.7 million.Capital,

originally founded by the leg-endary Claudio Cecchetto, andwas the subject of a major TV adcampaign which began inFebruary. Speaking to mediadaily, Puntocom, Capital's artis-tic director Claudio Manciniattributed the network's recentratings success to "finding theright blend of strong news cov-erage and classic hits."

Commenting on the figuresto M&M, Audiradio's president,Felice Lioy, was fairly upbeat:"It's fair to say that Italianradio in general has grown inthis quarter. Mixed messages in France's Mediametrie ratingsby Joanna Shore

PARIS - The last ever Mediametriesurvey to be based on respondentsaged 15 -plus (the next survey movesto a lower age base of 13 -plus) pro-vided a mix bag of results, with fewclear trends emerging.

The figures, covering April -June2002, showed full -service market -leader RTL losing audience again, down to a 12.8% daily reach from13.5% in the April -June sweep lastyear. RTL's public full -service rival,Radio France's France Inter, was upby the same amount year -on -year,from 10.7% to 11.4%. Radio France'sall -news outlet France Info also didwell, up from 10.5% to 10.7% y an-on -year, reflecting France's bpolitical agenda during the period.

There were mixed results for thecommercial news/talk networks.

Europe 1 has dropped by nearly afull point over the course of the year, from 10.6% to 9.7%. But RMC Infowas up from 1.9% a year ago to 3.2%,possibly due to the network's exclu-sive World Cup rights.

NRJ is down by 0.6 points on ayear ago to 11.7%, although it is up0.2 points on the January -Marchsweep, and the CHR network com-fortably remains France's leadingmusic station. The NRJ Group'sgold station Nostalgie has droppedback from its impressive 9.1%reach a year ago to 8.0% this timearound, although its sister soft ACstation, Cherie FM, was up from5.4% to 6.0% year -on -year.

The rapid audience growth atLagardere Group's Europe 2, whichunder Christophe Sabot has switchedfrom AC to CHR, has slowed, remain-ing stable at 6.1%, the same figure it

achieved in the January -March sweep.Of the RTL Group's music sta-

tions, AC service RTL2 is downfrom 4.2% from 4.5% a year ago,

while dance network Fun Radio isdown from 8.15% to 7.5%, thoughthat figure is up on January -March's 6.7%.

Suomipop focuses on FinnishWith the success of bands such as Bomfunk MC'sand HIM, Finnish music has been riding on the crestof a wave recently. Sharing that success has beenthe American -owned Finnish domestic repertoirestation Radio Suomipop, which-as JonathanMander reports-has tapped into listeners' passionfor local music.

Finland's established com-mercial radio stationsbecame painfully aware ofthe full extent of the dangerposed by their new competi-

tor this time last year, when RadioSuomipop's summer ratingsranked it among the country'smost -listened -to radio stations.

Although the figures levelled -offa bit after the peak summermonths, the station launched inMarch 2001 has found a steady lis-tenership remarkably quickly.

Sceptics doubting the new sta-tion's concept had writtenSuomipop off even before itslaunch. To many others, however,an all -Finnish station seemed aperfectly natural development, since local repertoire has always

The station has become profitablein a little over a year-quite a featfor a Finnish commercial radiostation.

Suomipop can be heard in 13cities' around Finland, and it cur-rently reaches 13% of the popula-tion every week. Its 600,000 week-ly listeners make it the thirdlargest non -national commercialstation, just behind NRJ. "As soonas we get more power and more fre-quencies, we hope to reach 700,000listeners," Paarnio says.

"If you just look at what others doand never take risks you aren't goingto make interesting radio."

- Petri Paarnio,programme director, Suomipop

been strong in Finland, with 2001sales figures showing that over50% of music units purchased werefor domestic repertoire.

The Suomipop concept beganlife when its predecessor Star FMwas bought by US radio groupMetromedia. The new Americanowners gave the station's employ-ees a chance to come up with a for-mat that they considered best -suit-ed for the market.

Suomipop's programme directorPetri Paarnio previously worked atStar FM, and says he had suggest-ed an all -Finnish format when Starhad launched, but the previousowners had wanted to play safeand go with a hit format thatechoed that of existing FinnishCHR stations Kiss FM and NRJ.

"Helsinki alone has 25 radio sta-tions, so to compete in that marketyou either have to have a lot ofmoney for marketing or an excep-tional concept," says Paarnio. Inhis opinion, Star FM failed becauseits owners didn't give it therequired marketing push.

Originally, Paarnio had envis-aged a station playing 50% Finnishmusic and 50% internationalrepertoire, "but eventually werealised it had to be all or nothing, and we had to give it a go," he says.

Taking the risk of going 100%Finnish has certainly paid off.

Suomipop hasn't spent money onmassive marketing campaigns. Thesecret of its success has been word-of-mouth, Paarnio believes. "Thatis the best kind of marketing. Itshows we have loyal listeners." Thestation's name alone makes it easyfor newcomers to grasp the sta-tion's basic concept-Suomipopsimply means "Finnish pop."

Paarnio believes that part of thereason for the station's overnightsuccess is that listeners have astronger emotional connection tomusic by local artists than foreignartists, particularly if the song issung in Finnish. "Finns don't listento the words of English -languagesongs, but when it comes toFinnish music they're verydemanding," he notes.

The programmer recalls: "Whenwe were kids the songs we heard, the songs our parents played us,were all Finnish-Eppu Normaali,Juice Leskinen, Popeda. The clas-sic Finnish tunes are a part of ouridentity."

This widely -held affection forFinnish music has also protectedthe station against negative por-trayal by other stations. "You cannever say that Eppu Normaali,Popeda or Juice Leskinen is bad[musiC]-I believe that has shield-ed us," says Paarnio.

A TV advertisement for

Suomipop's launch featured peopleof several different nationalitieslistening to Finnish music andmaking comments like "rathermelancholy" (from a Brit) or "well,Swedish music is better" (from aSwede) followed by the slogan:"That's what you think!"

Inevitably, since Suomipop'slaunch and subsequent success, competitors haven't been slow tosteal some of its clothes. RadioNova now airs a Finnish musicchart, and most commercial sta-tions have increased their percent-age of local repertoire. Paarnio seessuch imitation as a symptom of aradio market lacking in adventure."If you just look at what others doand never take risks you aren'tgoing to make interesting radio,"he argues.

Within the context of its domes-tic repertoire music mission,Paarnio describes Suomipop as arock -leaning AC station, targeting25-45 year -olds and playing tracksfrom a database of up to 2,000songs. About half of the musicaired is new music.

Beyond classic rock acts such asEppu Normaali, Juice Leskinen,Popeda, Y6 and J. Karjalainen, who have been around for over adecade, Paarnio considers the sta-tion's core artists to be youngeracts such as Nightwish,Kemopetrol, Sipe, Tehosekoitinand Kerkko Koskinen.

Suomipop's habit of putting newsongs straight into rotation andlooking for suitable album tracks toplay has made the station very pop-ular with the local record compa-nies. Paarnio says the relationshipis very different from his previousexperiences at NRJ and Star FM."Co-operation is easy because weknow each other's needs," he says.He also notes that the music indus-try is now taking Finnish acts moreseriously than before, "and givesthem the same treatment as inter-national acts-more singles arenow released from albums."

Paarnio adds that Finnishmusic's recent export success meansthat "Expectations are also bigger.Production has improved and there'sa lot of new talent coming through."

Hard-working A-Ha's 20-year Lifelineby Kai R. Lofthus

To celebrate their 20th anniversary, A -Ha areworking harder than ever on their promotionalduties. With album number seven-Lifelines(WEA Germany)-still going strong at number62 on M&M's European Top 100 Albums chart, the band are doing countless press and radiointerviews during their full-scale tour of Europeand Brazil.

They opened the current tour on June 8 at the23,000 -capacity Ullevaal Stadium in Oslo, whichwas the first time a Norwegian band has head-lined a stadium gig in their home country. At thetime, the band's Magne Furuholmen told M&M:"It was a great way to kick off our tour. It wasalmost like playing in Rio De Janeiro! We hadinvested a great deal of prestige and ambitionsin this concert, and had been involved in everydetail of it, including selecting the bands."

Throughout the rest of June, A -Ha playedHolland, Belgium, France, Spain, UK, andRussia, with gigs commencing in August inBrazil, Germany, eastern Europe, and backagain in the UK where the tour is closing inthe middle of October. "This time we are doingbetter in some territories, including Swedenand Denmark, than we did with Minor Earth,Major Sky even though we are still on the firstsingle," says Pamela Harz, head of interna-tional exploitation at WEA Germany. "We'vemoved a long way beyond the comeback and itlooks like the album is going to be strongerthan the last one because of the live shows,

which we didn't have to the same extent. Wedidn't have the extra momentum. This willtake us a step further."

During the 10 years between MemorialBeach in 1992 and last year's comeback albumMinor Earth, Major Sky, Morten Harket,Magne Furuholmen and Paul Waaktaar-Savoyhad worked on separate projects. Harketreleased both pop and religious solo albums, while Furuholmen recorded contemporary clas-sical music under the alias Timbersound, andWaaktaar-Savoy developed his rock outletSavoy with wife Lauren.

Harz says, "The second single everywhereexcept the UK [where it is the first] will beLifelines out on July 8." Reinhard Baerenz, head of music at CHR station MDR Jump inHalle, Germany comments: "A -Ha have madeone of the most sensational comebacks of an '80sband. Their new single continues the high qual-ity standard of previous releases. Recently, Isaw them live and they were great. Lifelineswas really easy to playlist-the band fits in per-fectly with MDR Jump and we playlisted thetrack right away."

A-Ha's management, Brian Lane at BandanaManagement in London, is reportedly in negoti-ations about an album release in the US. "We'rein a dialogue with Warner in the US to see if it'spossible to release it on another label. The labelwe're going with there needs to show the righttendencies," says Furuholmen.

Ike's redemptionby Paul Sexton

He used to be the musicindustry's devil incarnate, but it's no longer politicallyincorrect to say "We LikeIke".

Ike Turner, longdemonised for his infa-mous mistreatment of for-mer wife Tina, became theultimate persona non grataafter his self-confessedmisdemeanours were giventhe Hollywood spin in the1993 film What's Love GotTo Do With It? But at theage of 70, Turner hasentered a period of belated cre-ative redemption. He won aGrammy nomination, and a WCHandy Award, for his currentalbum of infectious rhythm andblues with his Kings of Rhythm,Here And Now, on his Ikon label, marketed in Europe byContinental Record Services inHolland (www.continental.nl).

Turner is currently on his secondEuropean visit of the year for livedates which included the month'sNorth Sea, Montreux and Nice JazzFestivals, affording the opportunityto hear the other side of the storyfrom the guitarist -pianist who canclaim to have been present at thevery birth of rockn'roll. "What I'mplaying now is just really me," hesays. "All my life I've done songspeople were familiar with, becauseyou get an immediate response. Inever would do original songs-I've

always thought that Iwould be rejected. I alwaysdid Ike Turner throughTina Turner or JackieBrenston. I waited to get to70 years old to find out thepublic really like what Ido!"

It was with Brenston thathe played piano on Rocket88, the 1951 US R&B num-ber one often cited as thefirst -ever roclen'roll record.Turner has re-recorded thetune for Here And Now,which also exudes the earlyblues influences of the boyfrom Clarksdale, Mississippi

from Sonny Boy Williamson, PinetopPerkins and others.

Turner says he only likes twosongs from the Ike & Tina years,Nutbush City Limits and ProudMary, but ends with an irresistibleanecdote about their legendary, enigmatic producer Phil Spector."On River Deep Mountain High, hehas 78 voices going `doop-doop,'and you don't even hear it, he issuper -creative. Let me tell youabout Phil Spector. He's a fantasticdude if you know him. But he's aschizophrenic, I would say. Onetime I really got pissed [off] atPhil, I called him and left a 'mes-sage, I said, 'You got all these peo-ple around you that's scared totalk to you. I'm not one of thosebutt -kissers.' I really told him off.Swear to God, next day he sent mea cheque for $2,000 to take mygirlfriend to dinner."

If you'll excuse the pun, interest is again "ris-ing" in BruceSpringsteen, whosefirst album with the EStreet bapd since 1984,The Rising, is out inter-nationally on Sony onJuly 29. Taking a lookat his website-w w w. brucesp rin g -steen.net-the single

AIRBORNEThe pick of the week's new singles

by Siri Stavenes Dove & Miriam Hubner

TRUCKSIr's JUST PORN MUM(Gut Records)Release date: NorwayMay 27, UK September 2The debut single from Truckswas recorded and producedin Norway at Oslo's WaterfallStudios (Kylie Minogue,

M2M, Span, S Club 7) and follows the Blink 182 andWheatus recipe for success, combining witty lyricswith full -on, loud rock, adding a dollop of sex for goodmeasure. After becoming part of the soundtrack forevery summer party in Norway, the teenage -friendlytune went straight in at number six in that country'ssingles chart on its release at the end of May. Havingbeen embraced in Scandinavia, the half -Norwegian,half -English four -piece are currently preparing theirassault on the UK, where they have been picked upby indie label Gut Records. Head of music at studentnetwork SBN, Alastair Brown, saw the potential ofIt's Just Porn Mum early on. "When I first heard it, itimmediately sounded like something people will pickup on," he says. "There is the obvious Wheatuscomparison-the teen thing, and having a laugh. Andit's infectious and has a strong hook. Commercially, itcould do well. It will be interesting to see whichstations will pick it up." He adds: "There are a lot ofScandinavian acts about at the moment, and this isprobably the one with the broadest appeal." SSD

HeikkiHilamaa, music editor at public CHR stationYLE2 Radiomafia in Finland, says: "I thinkthat the sound of it is like a glider in the skywhen the weather is fine." DANCE BEATThe weekly dance chart comment by Harald Roth

Moony's (pictured) Dove(I'll Be Loving You)(Airplane!) stays at thetop of the Dance Traxxchart for a fifth weekthis week. Its fiercestcontender next weekcould be Tim Deluxe's ItJust Won't Do (on newUK imprintUnderwater), which

moves from from 19 to five. The track also topsthe Movers listing.

Thanks to chart positions in the UK,Ireland, Germany, Scandinavia, Italy, Belgiumand Hungary, UK act The Berginerz's RecklessGirl (Interscope) enter the top 10 this week, climbing from 15 to 10.

Specialist sales in the UK and Ireland arethe reason behind Belgian act Dee Dee's resur-gence with Forever (Free-style/A&S Records),which shoots up from 29 to 17.

Meanwhile, US act Green Velvet are cur-rently enjoying considerable popularity inBelgium, Holland and Germany, and jump from53 to 26 with Gendefekt (Relief).

Remember 1990, when Snap's The Power(Logic/BMG) ushered in the new decade withone of the biggest dance crossover hits of alltime? It topped the German dance chart foreight weeks running-a feat unlikely ever to berepeated today-and eventually became one ofBMG Germany's biggest all-time export hits tothe US market. Well, now the act is back withremixes of former hits. Italian remixersPlaything have revamped See The Light(Bookmark), which enters the Dance Traxxchart at 30 this week, and is currently enjoyingsupport in the UK and Spain.

Toby Lee Connor's Follow The Sun (GangGo/WEA) is a tune to look out for in the comingweeks. Signed in Germany, the cut has alreadycrossed borders into Holland, Belgium andPoland, and could enter the Dance Traxx top 40very soon. Also hotly tipped for top 40 action issuperstar DJ Fergie's The Bass E.R: BassGenerator (Decode/Telstar).

THIS WEEK'S MOVERS1 It Just Won't Do Tim Deluxe feat. Sam Obernik (Underwater)2 This Is My Sound DJ Shog (Logport/Drizzly)3 Harder They Come Target (Tracid Traxxx)4 Fly With Me (To The Stars) DJ's © Work (Vinyl Vibes/Trance Formation)5 Only You Jan Wayne (Storm Entertainment/Kontor/edel)6 The Bass E.R: Bass Generator Fergie (Decode/Telstar)7 Follow The Sun Toby Lee Connor (Gang Go/WEA/Warner Mus.)8 Summer Sound System Nature One Inc. Denmark, was one of those to add the trackthis week. "Personally, I like it," he says. "Andit fits in really well with our mix right now. Thefirst Moby track we ever played was We're AllMade Of Stars-his previous stuff wasn't real-ly for us."

There's a new number one this week, in theshape of Elvis vs JXL's A Little LessConversation (RCA), which pushes KylieMinogue's Love At First Sight (Parlophone)down to number three.

A strong contender for the number one spot,George Michael's Shoot The Dog (Polydor),tops the Most Added listing for the secondweek running, moving from 28 to 14 this week."The politics of it is not a problem inDenmark," says Sand. "We don't take thingslike that very seriously." He adds: "Freeek! wassharper, more metallic. This one is softer andmore melodious-I think it's fantastic."

Meanwhile, Eminem's Without Me(Interscope), at four after 11 weeks on thechart, has picked up six nominations for theforthcoming MTV Music Video Awards in theUS, taking place in New York on August 29.

tries-Mills with AIM and Zelnik atUPFI-and both work at a Europeanlevel through Impala.

Zelnik is glowing in his apprecia-tion of Mills' achievements. "Martinis one of the 'historic' UK indies. Heis the most independent of the inde-pendents-he's quite a radical andhe is a visionary," he says. "Editori-ally, he has never compromised andhas always managed to developartists on a long-term basis. Therearen't many like him."

Mills comments in a statement:"We are very happy to be renewingour relationship with Patrick Zelnik, and excited about establishing ourown presence in France with such agreat team. We are grateful to [Vir-gin's] Labels and Delabel for the suc-cesses we have had together, thoughafter long debate we decided that tobe a larger part of a smaller and inde-pendent set-up was the right basis forour new French operation." Millswould not be drawn further on thedeal, as details are yet to be finalised.

Compared to Virgin, which onlytook on a certain number of Beggarstitles, Zelnik says this is "a long-term deal" which includes Beggars'full range of labels, including XLRecordings and 4AD, and which alsoallows for the possibility of Beggarsswitching the marketing and promo-tion of some projects to Naive. Cur-rently, the deal excludes XL act TheProdigy, but Zelnik says distributionof the act will move to Naive whenthe current licensing deal with Vir-gin's sub -label Delabel expires.

Zelnik says Beggars will add avast catalogue of UK indie rock andelectronic music to its current roster."We are going to be extremelyinvolved in marketing Beggars' cata-logue in France," says Zelnik. "Theidentity and the branding of thelabel in France will certainly grow."

Beggars will operate from anoffice located close to its new distrib-utor, and will be run by a small teamwhich includes Clarisse Fieurgant ashead of promotion and Laurent RossiLaurent, who joins as general man-ager from Atmospheriques.

MTG launches all -Swedish stationby Johan Lindstrom

STOCKEIOLM - MTG Radio hasrelaunched its Stockholm stationMetro FM 101.9 with an all -Swedishmusic format, extending its name toMetro FM 101.9 Svenska Favoriter("Swedish Favourites").

Metro FM originally debuted inApril this year on a frequency previ-ously used by AC network Rix FM,and is run in co-operation withMTG's free newspaper Metro. Duringits first few months of life it has beenrun as an AC -leaning 24 -hourrequest station.

The new format is built aroundSwedish pop, with a special emphasison Swedish -language titles.

"We play almost entirely Swedish -language songs at the moment-pri-marily pop by artists such as TomasLedin, Eva Dahlgren and Uno Sven-ningsson-strong and very Swedishacts," says Jonas Sandberg, pro-gramme director of Metro FM. "Butwe also play material from the newfusion between pop and the Swedishdanceband [schlager] genre, with

groups such as Friends, Arvingarnaand Barbados."

The target group for Metro FM iswomen over 30, a group which is alsocatered for by MTG's soft AC LugnaFavoriter (Soft Favourites). MTGnow runs a total of four stations inStockholm, including national ACnetwork Rix FM and CHR/dance-for-matted Power Hit Radio.

Sandberg has been deputy groupprogramme director and market co-ordinator at MTG Radio for the pastyear. Formerly the morning presen-ter at the Mix Megapol network, he isalso Metro FM's only presenter, broadcasting a marathon 07.00-13.00daily airshift.

"We haven't really reformatted thestation, rather we have focused it,"he says. "We noticed that a lot ofrequests came in for Swedish music. Ithink that this [domestic repertoire]format is something that has beenlacking from the Stockholm market, something that the listeners wantand a need that hasn't been metbefore."

Although Metro FM is dominated

by oldies from the '80s and '90s, somenew music from its core artists isbeing played on the station.

The new .direction for Metro FMwill be publicised in the Metro news-paper during August. Metro Interna-tional, which runs free newspapers in23 markets, de -merged from MTG in2000. Metro FM is also undertakingmajor promotions with film compa-nies, including for the new Swedishmovie Grabben I Graven Bredvid.

Orton unveils Heavenly offeringcal acclaim and strong sales. Butthat's exactly when you need tospend a bit of money to take it to thenext level. That hasn't happeneduntil now."

Orton's debut album, 1996'sTrailer Park, sold 230,000 copies inthe UK, and the follow-up in 1999Central Reservation shifted 160,000units. EMI:Chrysalis, whichnow handles all of Barrett's Heaven-ly roster, believes Daybreaker canimprove on that.

"We want to position her as a coreartist for serious music fans and togive her the best mainstream market-ing back-up," says Mark Collen,EMI:Chrysalis MD and EMI RecordedMusic's senior VP global marketing.

The record company hopes for anearly boost in its campaign with theannouncement of the shortlist forthis year's Technics Mercury MusicPrize. The 12 "albums of the year"will be unveiled the same week thatHeartbreaker is released. Both ofOrton's previous albums re-ceived considerable sales impetusfrom being short-listed.

Orton herself believes she issinging better than ever on the newrecord. "I stopped smoking makingthis album," she reveals. "But Idon't think the difference is justdown to that. I felt a directness anda clarity, which I haven't felt before. There was no nonsense while I wasmaking this record."

Ironically, Orton had set out tomake a record with no star guests."I didn't want to collaborate withanyone. I was going to go off and doit on my own and delve into myselfand get really brave," she says. Then William Orbit called up. "Iwas in LA and we went into the stu-dio together for the first time ineight years. It was great what timehad done for us both inbetween." Orbit added his uniquemixing abilities to Thinking AboutTomorrow.

"It was one of the mostbeautiful things I'd ever heard and Ihad to sing it. We did it in one takeand that's what you hear on therecord," she says.

The result is an album thatretains the gentle beauty of her ear-lier records yet has a greaterresilience and maturity. "I'm nowwriting from here and now and notabout all this stuff from the pastthat I had to unload," Orton says."My songs have become like little`post -it' notes to myself in the sky."

LONDON - Veteran UK record producer GusDudgeon died in a car accident on July 21when his Jaguar veered off a motorway nearReading, Berkshire.

Dudgeon's wife was also killed in the crash.Dudgeon, 59, was best known for his 1970sproductions for Elton John, which yieldedsuch hits as Your Song, Rocket Man andGoodbye Yellow Brick Road. In a statement,Elton John said he was "devastated", describ-ing Dudgeon as "an incredibly talented pro-ducer and a very dear friend for many years".Dudgeon was a founder member of the MusicProducers Guild, whose chairman AndrewEast says he "contributed so much to ourgrowth as an organisation. Gus never lostsight that it was the music that was impor-tant, and continually supported new talent."

As an in-house engineer at Decca Records'studios in his early 20s, Dudgeon worked on

Rolling Stones and Marianne Faithfullrecords. The first album to credit Dudgeon asproducer was UK rock act Ten Years After'sself -titled 1967 debut on Deram. He went onto become one of the UK's first freelance pro-ducers, and in 1969 was at the desk on DavidBowie's first hit, Space Oddity. His long rela-tionship with Elton John began on the artist'sself -titled 1970 album, the first of 12 theymade together, also including Madman AcrossThe Water, Don't Shoot Me I'm Only ThePiano Player and Blue Moves. Dudgeon alsooversaw albums by, among others, Chris Rea,Lindisfarne and XTC. He had lately beenworking on a tribute album to erstwhile musi-cal comedy act the Bonzo Dog Band, with con-tributions "in the can" from both Ringo Starrand the late George Harrison. Funeralarrangements were pending at press time, and a memorial service for Dudgeon isplanned for September.
