IT Band Syndromeby Tim Rood

The iliotibial band is a thick band of fibrous tissue that spansfrom just above the hip joint along the outside aspect of the legto just below the knee joint. It is often injured through repeti-tive stress activities such as running, jumping, and cycling.

The symptoms of ITB syndrome can include pain on theoutside aspect of the knee joint as well as hip joint pain. Inmost cases, the problem results from an unlevel pelvis combinedwith foot abnormalities (e.g. excessive pronation). Otheraggravating factors can include running on banked surfaces, inadequate warm-up or cool-down, and increasing distance tooquickly.

I’ve talked with Dr Amyas Kabir about this. He treats a lot ofrunners and receives many referrals via word of mouth. Hisphilosophy is to educate people on nutrition and physical wellbeing while using conservative measures such as Active ReleaseTechnique coupled with Chiropractic adjustments. For moreinformation, contact him at (309) 663-7011.

The iliotibial band is a thick band of fasciathat extends along the lateral thigh

from the iliac crest to the knee.

Profile on Amy Coppleby Jana Kiefer & Phil “Geno” Warlow

Amy Copple says she’s been running herwhole life just because she loves it and she

loves sports. Inspired by her highschool and college coaches, Amykeeps the spirit alive by coachingyounger runners herself. She’s amulti-tasker who runs races andusually wins her age group. Then, she takes time to snap pictures ofothers as they race toward thefinish line. Not a big deal, as far asAmy’s concerned. The ever-curious J & G Team want toknow the rest of the story…

J & G Team: Amy, you’ve run alot of races – do you have afavorite?

Amy: Lots of favorites – DawsonLake (scenery), Park 2 Park (whereelse can you run down MainStreet?), Abe’s Amble (challenging& neat shirts), St Jude’s (greatcause & flat course), Folepi (alldownhill!), Turkey Trot (it’s free& neat T-shirts).

J & G: Do you have someespecially memorable races?

Amy: The Indianapolis halfmarathon, and the Hawaii Ironmancourse. My family is going toHawaii over Christmas, and I can’twait to run on the Ironman courseagain. Hawaii is the most beautifulplace in the world to run. I lovethe water fountains & showersright along the road. It’s great toknow that some very famouspeople have run right on the samespot I run on when I am there.

J & G: Who’s your favorite person to run with?

Amy: My wonderful loving husband. Sometimes this is goodand sometimes this is bad. We run at 4am every morning. He isa whole lot faster than me and sometimes he has to stop andwait on me to catch up!!! I hate when he does that. I like toenjoy my runs and not have to “race” my daily runs. No, reallyI appreciate his support in my running and that he actually getsout there on the road with me so early.

J & G: The J & G Team appreciates early morning runners (atleast the “J” part of the team does…) What about unusualplaces to run – anything come to mind?

Amy: “Race the Dead” was an old LRC race that was run inTowanda on old Route 66. The race went through a graveyardat night. You were supposed to carry a flashlight but I didn’twant to because I didn’t think I would need it. Boy was Iwrong… The people who got last were given the best awards. I

got a little casket with candy forwinning my age group!!!

G: Hey! I got dead last thereonce! Must have been the extrarefreshment at the “water stop”…J: Were the refreshments dippedout of a bubbling cauldron and didthey cause you to have visions?Such as – a Rich Beal sighting??Amy?

Amy: I see Rich a lot, usuallywhen I’m taking pictures. Heseems to hide behind people and Idon’t see him until I get home andstart editing my pictures before Isend them to Bob Lambert. Richis in the background of a lot ofpictures.

J & G: That sounds downrightcreepy! What sounds good to you,Amy?

Amy: The Walt Disney WorldHalf Marathon. My family lovesgoing to Disney World. We have alot of memories there together.

J & G: How do you get yourvolunteer points in?

Amy: My family worked thefinish line at the Lake Run this yearand had a ball. It was so neatseeing all the runners – old & new –come through the chute. Theatmosphere is a lot of fun at theLake Run.

J & G: Isn’t that the best darn race by a dam site? We heardthat somewhere… What’s your protocol before a big race?

Amy: I make sure I have Mary Pinkham (my race partner) inthe car along for the ride with me; my favorite piece of runninggear – my watch; a Snickers Power Bar and Gatorade; and Pepsifor the caffeine.

J & G: Now, that makes it sound like you run for a reason!

Amy: No. I just run because I love to run. I would like to getfaster but that takes time and a lot of “sprint work”.

Random Thoughtsby Sherry Detloff

As I write this, my mind seems to bejumping from one topic to another, sosince I’m having trouble focusing on onesubject for any length of time, I’m justgoing to write about EVERYTHING thatpops into my head (oh, no!):

• I’m beginning to think the recentnasty running weather is all myfault because of the first two 5Ks Iran this year. It snowed during theMiller Park Zoo Run, but thosewho have run this race before knowto expect ‘surprising’ weather. And the running conditionsreally weren’t that bad; thanks to the Bloomington streetcrew for plowing not only Miller Park but the surroundingneighborhood.

The second 5K I ran this season was the CCHS SaintsAlive 5K. I hadn’t run this race in three years, and I reallyenjoyed the course… it was the incredible wind I didn’tenjoy! The first mile was heavenly with the wind pushingthe runners and walkers from behind, except that I couldn’tsee very well with my hair blowing in my face. I think weall ran faster than we intended to during that first milebecause of the wind. All of that changed during the secondmile when we started running into the wind. I can honestlysay that I’ve never run in such strong wind, strong enoughto take your breath away. All you can do is put your headdown and keep moving forward. I forgot all about the windas soon as I sat down to a plate full of post-race goodies.(Thanks to Beth Lamb and Tammy Knippenberg fororganizing this opportunity to run.) Hmm, I wonder if theraces in Chicago are always windy…?

• And speaking of the weather, I was “under the weather” afew days before the St Patrick’s Day 5K, so since I wasn’tup to running, I volunteered instead. (Repeat after me:those who can’t run, volunteer. It’s a good way to rack upsome volunteer points!) I actually did some “volunteercross-training” by helping with software for the first time.I had the all-important job of standing by the side door atthe VFW, taking the stringers of tags that the Lowrybrothers (Curt and Kent) handed to me. Then I raced tothe VFW office with the tags for software guru JohnKastigar to enter on the computer. I also delivered the‘time machines’ to the office - without dropping them -where their contents were downloaded onto the computer.

Working software was a real eye-opener; now I understandhow, when I cross the finish line, my time ends up on apiece of paper that’s taped to the wall (usually on the lastpage)!

SShheerrrryy’’ss OObbsseerrvvaattiioonnss • I hated to miss my favorite March race - the CIDA Eat ‘Em

Up 5K in Peoria - but I ended up running a race of anothersort: I volunteered to drive my 83-year-old mother toToluca for her 88-year-old cousin’s funeral. Thanks toMapquest, Mom and I now know where the towns ofBenson, Roanoke and Washburn are… and they’re nowherenear Toluca! Once Mom and I turned around and drove inthe opposite (non-Mapquest) direction, we made it to thefuneral with five minutes to spare. Oh, the places you’ll go- with Mapquest!

• I was browsing through the clearance/yellow dot racks atBergner’s one day when I ran across some women’s exerciseclothing located, oddly enough, in the ‘pajamas, nightgownsand robes’ section of the store. That’s a strange combina-tion of merchandise, because aren’t sleep and exerciseopposites? Anyway, there was activewear, exerciseclothing by Danskin, Marika, Jockey (no, not the silks thathorseracing jockeys wear!) and Champion. (Target alsocarries Champion brand activewear for both women andmen.)

I tried on and purchased one of those cute mesh running‘skorts’ that cover up more than my running shorts do.(Men: ask any female to explain what a skort is.) Uponcloser inspection of my running skort, I discovered that theouter pocket was sewn on upside down on the left leg ofthe shorts part of the skort. I decided that these skortsmust have been manufactured overseas and that the upsidedown pocket must be a cultural difference or a flaw. Forheaven’s sake, if I put my keys, my driver’s license and myhealth insurance card (yes, I carry it with me whenever Irun, just in case!) in the upside down pocket, they’d justfall out!

I showed the curious upside down pocket to DawnDieckgrafe one night at Catch The Wave. She took measide and kindly explained that my running skort is actuallya tennis skirt, and the upside down pocket holds a sparetennis ball! Well, DUH, me! Sorry, I’ve just never caredfor sports that involve chasing a ball, which is why I’venever played tennis or golf. But I sure like the clothes -even if the pockets are upside down!

• The unit I work in at State Farm has not one, but TWOhealthful programs going on simultaneously. One is a‘biggest loser’ contest where each participant chips in fivebucks for starters. For each week you gain weight, youtoss three bucks in the pot. If your weight doesn’t change, you throw two bucks in the pot. By Memorial Dayweekend, the person who’s lost the greatest percentage oftheir body weight wins the cash. I already have the feelingthat the only thing I’ll be losing during this contest is a lotof cash!

The second healthful program is a walking program(running counts too); the goal is simply to increase your

early and parked within 200 feet of the finish line! Post-racefood seemed plentiful and the finisher medals were big shinyLincoln pennies. Don’t miss this one next year—it’s worth thedrive!

The summer will be busy as usual as TNAM (Thursday NightAccumulative Marathon) ramps up to keep runners running atthe Lake. This is a fun program that has loose rules, great shirts, and fantastically bad door prizes. Marathon Training is a littlemore serious and will be ready to start in June with Chicago asthe goal marathon. Kathy Alexander is in charge of TNAM(see her article elsewhere in this issue) and Merlin Anderson isleading the marathoners (read his Marathon Training article nextmonth).

We have a few road trip opportunities coming up this year.First up is Burlington, Iowa on May 19 for the Great BridgeRace, where you’ll have the chance to run in two states in a 6mile race. There’s also talk of a repeat performance at the DesMoines, Iowa Living History Farms Cross Country race theSaturday before Thanksgiving. Watch the Forum(www.lakerunclub.org) for more information. Till next time, runsmart and run safe.

We’re well into our 2007racing season with 7Circuit races already onthe books! Catch TheWave and Ride TheWave are nearlycompleted for theseason, and the LakeRun is right around thecorner. Our racingseason stretches fromMarch to December, butit seems to fly by eachyear.

If you didn’t run the Lincoln Memorial Half Marathon, youmissed a great race. This year, the race was in a new downtownvenue, and registrations more than doubled over past years. Thecourse took us through beautiful neighborhoods and parks, pastLincoln sites and through cemeteries. The support was very, very good, and parking was a breeze. We arrived about an hour

President’s Messageby Jana Kiefer

G: There is a ten-step track workout program Nigel Keencould introduce you to that would help you overcome thisproblem; however, you don’t seem to lack motivation… Who’sresponsible for that?

Amy: Two people: Charlie Grotevant and Carol Pratt.Charlie – he is an awesome individual and always has a positivecomment. I sure hope I can still be running when I am his age. That’s my goal. Carol – she is phenomenal. We are in the sameprofession working with and coaching kids. We both had thesame coach at different times of our lives that showed us how tolove the sport and be competitive. We are a lot alike and it’s agreat feeling if I can a least see the back of her at a race!

J & G: We agree completely. Ask Carol to share what shecarries around in that hip flask sometime… Oops, was that asecret? What’s the secret to your running success?

Amy: Obviously it is the physical fitness but most importantlythe friendships I have made through running. Runners are a“little different” but they are my best friends. Thanks to all ofyou!!!

J & G: Aren’t we supposed to appreciate our differences?Look at Merlin Anderson!

Amy, thanks for sharing part of your running life with others inthe Lake Run Club. Our membership is full of interestingstories and the J & G team is committed to surfacing and sharingthose with our running readers. Stay tuned to see who’s runningand why. See you next month – stay safe.

level of activity. The Claims Department challenged thePurchasing Department to a walkathon to see whichdepartment could walk the most miles in four weeks. Ibelieve the prize is bragging rights! Rising to the challenge,my co-workers and I bought the finest pedometers that$2.77 would buy… These babies measure footsteps, kilometers, or miles, whatever you set it for; and we’vebeen wearing our pedometers at work and at home. Thepedometers make a clicking noise with each step thatsounds like Mexican jumping beans (okay, you have to bereally old to understand that analogy!)

I’ve discovered that the pedometer doesn’t accuratelymeasure my mileage when I ride ‘Old Blue’, my Schwinncruiser. Also, I wore the pedometer when I tried twodifferent brands of elliptical machines at my gym; one ofthe ellipticals measured mileage on my pedometer, and theother did not. I’m pleased to report that using a pedometeris MUCH easier than setting a digital watch (I’m digitallychallenged, you know) and I haven’t dropped my pedom-eter in the toilet yet!

That’s all for this month. I’ll see you at the races - just look forthe runner who’s wearing a tennis skirt and a pedometer!

VOLUNTEER ROUNDUPVOLUNTEER ROUNDUPVOLUNTEER ROUNDUPVOLUNTEER ROUNDUPVOLUNTEER ROUNDUPby Jenna Wojciechowski

With the onset of the Catch the Wavetraining program, I realized it has been ayear since I have “been” with the LakeRun Club. One year since I started as aCatch The Wave runner, wondering whywe were running when it was 20 degreesand snowy… and realizing why a beer

at Green Gables is the ultimate post-run reward. Throughoutthis past year, I have somehow – along with working full-time,tackling grad school, being on the Board for another organizationin town, and having a personal life – found the time to volunteerwith the LRC. You may wonder why I think that is such a bigdeal, but the fact is - I do not run any more! A herniated disk inmy back made that decision for me, and the pain is too great tohandle.

So, why do I still volunteer for the club, you ask? It’s thepeople, and the camaraderie. Throughout this past year, I havemet some fantastic people. Recently I had a great time hangingout with Marge Ehlers, Deb McNamara, Sherry Detloff andthe charming Brian Wojciechowski on a Saturday morning atOften Running, signing folks up for CTW. Although it’s been ayear, I simply cannot forget my original CTW, Jeff Simpson,Jana Kiefer, Beth Lamb, and Katie Black. If I hadn’t metBeth, if I hadn’t become an active participant of the LRC, I

would have never been cordially introduced to Empire Spa - mynew means of stress survival…

As we enter the sunny, Constitution Trail-filled summer runningseason, ask yourself - how long have you “been” with the LakeRun Club? How do you rate as a participant? Could youbecome more involved with the club this year, perhaps do alittle more than you did last year? Remember, you’d get to“hang out” with some really great people, even if you aren’trunning!

The Lake Run Club sponsored circuit races listed below wouldprovide some great volunteer opportunities. Whether it’sregistering people before a race, handing out water during a race,or working a finish line, your help is always appreciated. Asalways, feel free to contact Volunteer Coordinator Pam Waldenwith any questions you may have.

Tremont Turkey Festival 5KCircuit Race Profile:

by Paul Peacock

The Details: The 5K race in Tremont kicks off the Saturdayschedule of events for the town’s annual Turkey Festival(www.turkeyfestival.com). The three and a half day festivalfeatures its share of family activities including a beauty pageant,a carnival, sporting events and lots of eating. The festival hangsits hat on, what else, turkey sandwiches that locals startpreparing on grills in the early morning hours. After running thisyear’s race, held on June 9 at 7:30 am, plan to stick around forsome of the other activities such as the strawberry shortcake-eating contest or the bed races.

The Course: As with many small town races, thecourse starts in town and then heads into thecountry. These courses give runners the best ofboth worlds and generally contain softer surfacesthan city routes. The Tremont 5K starts at thecity park and goes about half mile through town.Runners then turn north on a country road forabout another mile before they turn around andhead back to the starting point. The return routegoes one block further south than the trip out andfinishes inside the park. The course has a fewgently rolling hills with the last mild uphill climbabout a quarter mile from the finish. See the routeat: http://www.usatf.org/routes/view.asp?rID=117665

The Director: Mike Pflederer is a Tremontnative and recreational runner who volunteered tohelp with the race 14 years ago. Coincidentally, that year husband and wife race directors Jim andCarol Schaffer added a 10K course to the alreadyestablished 5K race. While hosting both races atthe same time eventually proved successful, the increase inlogistics made it easy for the co-directors to hand over the reinsto Mike. While Mike stays busy enough with a new construc-tion management business, he finds time to give back to hiscommunity not only as the race director, but also as a schoolboard member and a Sunday school teacher.

How it All Began: Local running advocate Mike Herrinorganized the first race as an addition to the already establishedfestival in 1975. The first race was a 5-miler and in 1983 GlennHerold of Creve Coeur set the course record at 23:52. In 1990Jim and Carol Shaffer changed the race to a 5K and in 1992 theyadded a 10K race that remained until 2000. The Saturday racebecame a staple for area runners and in 1996 the two racescombined for a record 346 finishers. The timing was right, thecompetition was fierce and runners were treated to a pancakeand sausage breakfast afterwards.

For most years, the race is positioned a week ahead of thePeoria-based Illinois Valley Striders’ flagship race: the Steam-boat Classic. With thousands running that 4 mile race in Peoria, which includes elite runners from around the world gunning forsubstantial prize money, there are bound to be some runners

seeking a tune up before the race. In fact, the men’s 10K courserecord was set at 31:06 in 1996 by Brian Mills of England, whowas in town training for the Steamboat race the following week.Marion Sutton, also training for the Steamboat race, set at thefemale 10K record 37:06 in 1999.

In the year 2000 however, the Steamboat Classic was moved tothe same weekend as the Tremont Turkey Festival, creating aconflict. Race Director Mike Pflederer moved the race to aSunday and eliminated the 10K race to avoid the conflict. Goingagainst such a large rival took its toll - from 2000 to 2005 therace averaged about 170 finishers. On the upside, runners weregiven coupons for free turkey sandwiches at the festival. In

2006, Steamboat was moved back to its originalweekend and the Tremont 5K moved back to itsoriginal Saturday schedule and had 264 finishers. However, to keep the race cost down, runnersnow have to purchase their own breakfast orturkey sandwiches.

Current 5K Records:Male: Eric Volkert from Peoria ran 14:42 in 1994Female: Peggy Joseph from Peoria ran 18:49 in2004

The Experience: The Tremont Turkey Festivalembodies the hometown spirit of small ruraltowns. While Tremont today is a thrivingcommunity located near Peoria, Pekin, Morton, and Bloomington-Normal, this festival takesvisitors back to the Tremont of 1966 when localfarmers raised turkeys and townspeople wereraising money to build a pool. After the race, stickaround for pancakes and sausage and then visit thecountry store, which offers lemonade shake-ups

and an ice cream bar. Stay for a turkey sandwich and watch bedraces where anything with wheels and a mattress flies down thestreet as fast as the four pushers can go. After the bed races, why not enter the strawberry shortcake eating contest tocomplete your overcompensation of calories burned during therace. Mike, are you sure you don’t want to reinstate the 10K?

If all these activities weren’t enough to load up the kids for therace, a unique family division offers an award to the lowestcombined time of two family members running in the 5K. Therunners may be siblings, a married couple, parent and child, orany combination.

Best Reason to Run: For those who cannot be tempted by thefun activities and immense calorie consumption opportunitiesthat await after the race, all runners will also receive a micro-fiber T-shirt. Look, you’ve trained all spring for the Lake Run,so a 5K will seem like nothing. Head out Route 9 about 30miles west and show off your training. The weather is warm, the people are great, the food is awesome and you’ll get a niceshirt to wear the rest of the summer! What more could youwant in a spring race experience?

St Patrick’s Day was a fine day to run. The sun and light breezemade up for temps that were a wee bit on the cold side. AnABC run record of 43 runners showed up at the home of Lisaand Jay Sparks to join in the fun of running, eating, andcontributing an impressive total of $705 to The Baby Fold. TheBaby Fold is a multi-service agency that provides Residential,Special Education, Child Welfare, and Family Support Servicesto children and families in central Illinois.

We greatly exceeded the $204 collected for The Baby Fold lastyear. Actually, this year’s bucket included $705 and a dogbiscuit! The Sparks’ family dogs, Max and Sam, must like us!Or was it Donna Creditor’s golden retriever, Sophie?

The freezing temps at 8amdidn’t make for great bikingweather, however. Eventhough no bikers rode to theSparks’ home to join us, a fewbikers generously showed theirsupport with contributionsamounting to about 10% of theoverall total.

This run was different frommost of our runs in that westayed in town. The runs (3,6, and 9 mile) were out-and-back courses mostly on theConstitution Trail. The 9 mileadventure took us 4 miles toEwing Park, then about 10minutes of running in EwingPark, followed by the 4 miletrip back to Lisa’s home.

Mike Heffron, decked out inall green, including a Guinnesslogo on his long baggy shorts, won the hotly contested StPatrick’s Day costume contest.I don’t know who the judgewas, but I think the Guinnesslogo would have gotten KirbyCheek’s vote.

Deb McNamara won the IrishTrivia Contest. No protestswere lodged that Deb had anunfair advantage (her maidenname is Foley, also a tradi-tional Irish name). Runners-upin the trivia contest were MikeSteele, John Kastigar andSharri Pelarske.

Among the 43 runners were a dozen new ABC run participants, including Marcia Backstrom, Emily DeWald, Cathie Haab,Mary Ellen Idstein, Jenny Keen, Chery Lambert, JohnMalson, Roxanne Schulkins, Mike Steele, Brian Trela,Dick Wilson, and Larry Ziegler. Jenny Keen works for TheBaby Fold. Thanks for joining us, Jenny!

Thanks so much to everyone for your participation andcontributions. Lisa and Jay Sparks did a fantastic job hostingthis run and making all those pancakes. Thanks also to JoyceGrotevant for helping serve. An Irish proverb says “Your feetwill bring you to where your heart is.” You have all let your feetbring you to where your hearts are and you made a big differ-ence!

Dale Strassheim, ChiefExecutive Officer of The BabyFold, responded with a lettersaying: “Thank you for yourgift of $705, which was raisedduring the ABC Run on March17. Your thoughtful gift is areflection of not only yoursupport, but also of eachindividual child who benefitsfrom the services The BabyFold provides. With yourcontinued support we are ableto provide the services neededto help our kids become wholeand healthy.”

When you’re a teacher trying to runa marathon in all 50 states, limitedtime off during the school year forweekend trips makes the task a littletricky. After searchingmarathonguide.com for a race in astate I hadn’t yet completed, I wasactually able to find a race inAlpharetta, Georgia, on March 4 -the same weekend as Casimir PulaskiDay. Now, for many of you thismany not be one of those holidaysyou jump for joy about (unless ofcourse you’re Polish), but mostIllinois school teachers can’t waituntil the first Monday in March sowe can have some down timebetween winter and spring breaks.(OK, I’m pretty sure all of you StateFarmers are playing the world’ssmallest violin for me right aboutnow.)

After discussing this race with all the zany, weekendmarathoners I know, the only two people I could convince werefellow teachers Lynn Baber and Melissa Adams. Lucky for methere was also a half-marathon at this race (which they bothdecided to do), otherwise I might have been traveling alone.

Making travel arrangements for this race turned out to be a pieceof cake. The plan was to leave Saturday, run the race Sunday, and come home Monday. We were able to find relativelyinexpensive airfare direct from Bloomington to Atlanta, and itjust so happened there was some room at Chez Baber, akaLynn’s brother Brad Baber’s house. We hopped an early flight, picked up our packets (a pretty tiny expo held at a local gym)and had breakfast at the Waffle House, all before noon. We wereable to do a little sight-seeing and grab some excellent Italianpre-race carbs before we had to hit the hay.

On race day we woke up to a weather report of 16 mph windsand a temperature of 30 degrees. I was under the impression itwas going to be in the 60’s the whole weekend (which it was, except of course on race morning!) This was the first marathonI have ever run in tights, three shirts, gloves, and a headbandover my ears. Lynn and Melissa both ran in jackets, which Iactually considered. I shed my first shirt at mile two, but didnot get rid of anything else until about mile 25, and I only didthat so they could see my bib number at the finish line.

The course was impossible. Every step was uphill or downhill, nothing flat; a little more than the “rolling hills” advertised onthe website. The wind hardly died down, so that made it eventougher. The half-marathon course was the same as the firstpart of the full, and I’m pretty sure that Melissa (1:49:48) andLynn (1:50:16) were both glad to be done. I was close behind atthe half (1:53:11), but all of a sudden the course got pretty

lonely. Most of the participantswere doing the half. In fact, therewere only 277 finishers in the full, compared to 604 in the half. Maybemy legs were just tired, but I trulythink the second half of the coursewas much more difficult, especiallybecause mile 20 was the longest, slowest incline of my life. The onlygood thing going for me by that pointwas that the sun finally came out infull force.

I ended up finishing in 3:56:27,which I will take on that kind ofcourse any day. The post-race foodincluded Krispy Kreme donuts, cookies and fruit, my favorites.Overall, I thought it was very wellorganized for an inaugural race. There was plenty of fluid andvolunteers on the course. Would Iever go back? Perhaps, after I’ve

completed all 50 states. It was a beautiful area with lots of greatrestaurants and shops, so we certainly enjoyed the weekend. However, I think they would have to take an iron to that courseto get us back there any time soon.

Awesome Alpharetta

Part 2by Merlin Anderson

Now that I have finished thePantagraph crossword puzzle, the next item on my busyagenda is to peruse more oldissues of The Lake Runner.

What about Meg’s honey-do list, you ask? Well, a man’s got tohave priorities (just kidding, Meg).

December 1993 issueDave Kinley and Gary Ferguson ran 45.2 miles from Normalto Peoria. Why? Maybe Paul Martin or Donna Creditorwould understand.

Louie Tieman’s profile mentions his impressive collection ofrunning memorabilia, from autographed bibs from Arturo Barriosand Bill Rogers to Ron Hill’s singlet. I was reminded of the timeLouie and I were in Boston when Doug Kurtis, walking on theother side of the street, waved and yelled “Hi, Louie”. I wonderhow big Louie’s collection is now?

Dave Hawkinson had a Rich Beal sighting in St Louis, reporting that Rich ran the St Louis Marathon in a “Bostonqualifying time”. Was that followed by a Rich Beal sighting inBoston?

An article listed the number of finishers in area races in 1993.Wow! Running has grown! There are more races now and moreparticipation per race:

1993 2006St Pat’s 5K 97 367 (399 in ’07)Lake Run (total) 589 907Park2Park 5 mile 128 458Dog Days 5K 76 263Dawson Lake 5K 68 217Jingle Bell 5K 331 1047

January 1994 issueResults from a Lake Run Club questionnaire showed that, ofthose responding, I was in tenth place in terms of number ofmiles run in 1993 with 1,328 miles. I was soundly beaten bythe likes of Rick Cummins (3700), Mike Heffron (2630),Doug Gillam (2483), and Judy Oltman (2419). That RickCummins was quite a runner – he ran a 25:15 five mile and a31:55 10K in 1993.

February 1994 issueThis issue is a keeper because of Larry Nelson’s article aboutthe history of The Lake Run Club. Larry writes “our Lake RunClub began as a social gathering that combined running withsome great times over beer and burgers at the Green Gables.” In1980, Larry and three other runners (Gary Kombrink, JohnMcIntyre, and Jim Malay) went to a race that had been

From Pages Pastcancelled and, on the way back home, stopped at LakeBloomington to run around the lake. Later that year, DaveHoover suggested a run at the lake after work on Thursday.Word quickly spread and the tradition of Thursday night runs atGables was born.

Larry further wrote that “Dr John Cragan joined us andestablished a scientific justification for the social aspect of ourThursday nights. Dr Cragan calculated that after running threemiles, the human body had maximized its cardio-vascularbenefits. Anything run in excess of three miles merely burnedoff the body’s store of carbohydrates. Dr Cragan’s formulawent on to state that for each mile one runs in excess of three, ittakes the equivalent of two lite beers to replace the carbohy-drates burned.”

Larry described the start of the club as follows: “One Thursdaynight, Dave Hoover came into the Gables after running, with ahandful of the worst looking yellow T-shirts you ever saw. Thewording read: THURSDAY NIGHT LAKERUN CLUB. Thesewere the original club shirts. We had no officers, no rules. Wejust had fun. Hoover was the official dispenser of shirts. Hisrule was that you had to run the lake three times to get a shirt.Today’s Lake Run Club grew out of this motley crew as did theLake Run itself.”

March 1994 issueLarry Nelson continued his historical perspective and explainedthe importance of the social aspect, writing “Once the shirtsbegan to be seen around, people got more interested andThursday nights got very popular. It got so popular that wehad two groups of people who came at different times: StateFarm employees and people who worked for a living.” (Larrywas employed by State Farm.) He added, “Within each of thesewere two other groups: slow and fast. We would run inopposite directions in order not to get too depressed by thedisparity in ability. So with what amounts to four differentgroups, the socializing afterward was the bond that held us alltogether.”

Larry wrote about the Lake Run being started as a fund raiserfor the Central Catholic Booster Club. Larry Nelson, GaryKombrink, and Jim Malay organized the race. Larry also wrotethat they were concerned about the proliferation of races withincorrectly measured courses and that Larry, along with DebO’Rourke, Billy Read, Mitch Hobbs and others “talked aboutstarting a club to put on races that were accurate. We felt wecould put on a small number of races each year, run by runners, for runners. So we did it. We joined TAC in 1988.”

The first officers were Wendy Little (President) Ken Endrizzi(VP), Bobbie Raymond (Secretary), and Larry Nelson (Trea-surer). The first official meeting was June 16, 1988 (a Thursdaynight) at Lake Bloomington. The first race was the Dog Days8K on July 23, 1988. The first newsletter was published inJune 1988.

Well, that’s all the time I have for right now. I must move on tothe Sudoku, I mean the honey-do list.

It’s that time of year when kids double-knot their scuffed uptennis shoes, don their favorite character hats and T-shirts, andhead out to the Illinois Wesleyan track for the Lake Run ClubKids Run for Fun. The Kids Runs will be held each Friday June1 – August 10, with no run on July 13 because of JuniorOlympics. Registration begins at 5:30 and the first run starts at6 pm.

For those of you who have never attended, I’ll do my best todescribe the event. All children who attend receive a bibincluding their very own “race” number. Parents attempt tofasten the number to their clothing, sometimes involving one ofthe following: a) a scene that resembles something out of theWWF, b) the parent pinning the number to the back of the shirtafter minutes of trying to keep the child from ripping it off or, c)the parent removing the bib partway through the run becausethe child no longer wishes to wear it. Many parents consider ita good night if they do not have to proceed through all optionslisted above. I should also mention the above normally appliesto the more novice runners.

Kids then proceed to “run” around the track. One and two yearolds run only half way around the track; all other age groups runa full lap. Younger age groups usually require a fair amount ofencouragement. Some like to stop for a walk break, pick updebris off the track, sit down, or have their parents carry them. The idea is the run is supposed to be FUN so you can imaginethe antics that are witnessed as parents try tomake the experience fun for kids who are thinkingotherwise. Again, this normally applies to thenovice runners.

Once the kids make it around the track, they aregreeted by volunteers who pass out a cherishedfinisher’s ribbon. Kids and their cheering sectionsthen proceed to the refreshment area for theMcDonald’s juice and cookies provided forrefueling purposes. Repeat for each of theremaining age groups and you have witnessed theLake Run Club Kids Run for Fun! Almost – Iforgot to mention the best part…the smiles.

Sound like something too good to pass up? Here’show you can help:

Pre-registration will be held on Saturday, May 12from 10am – 2pm at Often Running. Parents canpre-register their children for the entire summerand receive their beloved T-shirts prior to the firstrun. If you’d like to help with pre-registration,please contact Dawn Dieckgrafe at (309) 661-4610, or [email protected]

Setup for the Kids Runs begins at approximately4:30 pm. Whether you want to join us from thenuntil closing time (approximately 6:30 pm) or just

stop by to hand out ribbons or cookies, we’d love to see you! Ihave no doubt the reward of seeing all the cheesy grins and juicemustaches will keep you coming back for more!

For more information on the program, please visit the Kids Runfor Fun webpage at www.lakerunclub.org or contact NancyBeaty at (309) 830-2150.

If you saw this ad for a marathon in Runner’s World, would yousign up?

“Exclusive marathon with a field of only 79 runners last year! Both new and experienced runners are welcome! Every singlerunner who showed up in 2006 completed the race success-fully, without injury, some even qualifying for Boston at a15:00 pace! Great crowd support! Fun post-race parties!Gorgeous shaded course that remains open for nine weeks!”

Of course you would sign up for it! Well, you do not need anairline ticket or a $100 registration fee. It’s right here in McLeanCounty, and it’s practically free.

OK, so TNAM doesn’t advertise in Runner’s World. The crowdsupport comes from deer and ducks. Those who qualified forBoston did so by using this marathon as their training run forsome other qualifying marathon later in the year. And all theparties except the last one are self-pay at Green Gables. Wedon’t even put up a race clock because we’re too lazy to take itdown. Besides, the staggered start (i.e. whenever you show up,finish using the rest room, stretch, and find a friend to run with)would mess up the times. But we have more fun than thosecrazy people who are running their guts out at Boston, Chicago, and Duluth!

TNAM (Thursday Night Accumulative Marathon) offers awater stop, but the water is sometimes a little murky in LakeBloomington, so bring your own drinking water or buy some atGreen Gables. But we give you nine choices of dates [the LakeRun on Saturday, May 5, 2007 and the next eight Thursdayafternoon/evenings] to run six times around the inner loop atLake Bloomington. Six times 4.37 miles = 26.2 miles. Gosh! That’s the same distance as a marathon!

And as long as you run the course at least six times and paythe not exactly exorbitant $13 registration fee, you get aquality, technical fabric (i.e. wicking) finisher’s shirt with aTNAM marathon logo: Thursday Night AccumulativeMarathon — I ran it, but I took my time. If you can’t evenmeet those relaxed standards, we have been known to allowmake-ups.

So whether you are a new Catch the Wave runner or anexperienced ultra-marathoner, bring a friend and come jointhe fun! We generally start between 5:30 and 5:45, but youcan start earlier or later than that if you choose. Runners ofall different abilities participate, so there is generallysomeone to buddy-up with. For the first three Thursdaysafter the May 5 Lake Run, I’ll be at the picnic table acrossfrom Green Gables (or inside Green Gables if the weather ishorrid) until at least 5:45 to accept registrations and to helpmatch up anyone who needs a running partner. After youfinish your run, look for the time sheet on the picnic tableand enter your time. (We’re not picky here. We trust you toreport whatever time you want to report.)

Advance registration is encouraged, so ask for one of the handyenvelopes at Catch the Wave, Ride the Wave, the Lake Run,Often Running, the IWU track (Kathy Alexander) or TiptonTrails (Kirby Cheek) on Tuesdays at 5:30, or LakeBloomington on Thursdays at 5:30. Or catch me anywhere elseyou happen to see me by May 24. There is also a registrationform on page 32 of this newsletter, but you have to provideyour own envelope.

Here’s a recap of the details:

1. Complete the registration form and pay $13 (cash or check, payable to Lake Run Club) by or before May 24.

2. At least six times, show up across from Green Gables andrun the inner loop (or the entire lake) at a scheduledTNAM run time. Or report a make-up.

3. Scheduled TNAM runs: the Lake Run (Saturday, May 5)and/or at 5:30 on any of the eight Thursdays after that

by John Lamarra

On April 7, 1982, for no reason thatI know of, I laced on a pair of tennisshoes and ran 1.3 miles through myneighborhood. Twenty five yearslater I’m still running. But there isno way I would have guessed it.That first day just about did me in,and it didn’t get much better rightaway.

Luckily a friend and colleague, DonTaylor, was traveling with me onbusiness the next day. Don was anexperienced runner and that day hegave me the best running advice I’veever had. He directed me to a storecalled Body N Sole to buy “real”running shoes. He explained that Ididn’t have to know anything aboutrunning (no problem there), that thestaff at the store would know exactlywhat I’d need. And the next day viainteroffice mail, I received from Dona couple recent issues of Runners’World and Jim Fixx’s Complete Bookof Running.

Don was right about the guys at Body N Sole. And his“resource material”, along with my new running shoes and abeautiful spring, were all the motivation I needed to survivethose first difficult months on the road. In time my legsstopped aching every time I ran, my stamina improved, and Ilearned how to breathe while running.

Fast forward 25 years. They say a wise person works fortwenty years and gets twenty years of experience while a foolworks for 20 years and gets one year of experience twentytimes. As a runner, I think we all grow wiser with the years – atleast those of us who stay with it. After all these years I nolonger think about “entering races”, I think about “participatingin events”. Personal Records don’t mean much – I’m prettysure all mine are behind me. Now it’s the social aspect (CanalConnection), the beauty of a course (Lake Run), the uniquechallenge (any marathon), the personality (River to River), orthe charitable cause (St Jude’s) of the event that are moreimportant than how I finish.

So what do we gain from years of pounding the pavement?Apart from the aches and pains, for me it’s about mental healthand physical fitness. The solitude of the road has always beenthe best kind of therapy and, with my hearty appetite, thecalorie burn is invaluable. Road racing lets you compete againstothers or against yourself. Either way, by testing yourself, youcome out a winner.

And think about this. To most people, the idea of running 26.2 miles is in therealm of impossibility. It certainly wasto me, and still seemed impossible evenafter I’d run my first half marathon. But as happens to so many runners, Ifound I could do the impossible. InApril 1986 I finished my first mara-thon.

Still we run on. Why? I don’t knowcompletely, but there are at least twothings that I know for sure. First, youdon’t get to accomplish the impossiblevery often. Running let me do that.

But more than that I think this is reallythe key: there has never been a singletime in twenty five years — probablywell over 3,000 runs — that I have everfinished running and thought to myself,“I wish I hadn’t done that one.” It justdoesn’t happen. Perhaps more thananything else, that’s why we keeprunning.

Subfreezing temperatures, ice and snow deep on the trail, nosunlight when you drive to work, no sunlight when you comehome from work; winter in Illinois – YUK! So, off we went toKey West, Florida where it is sunny and warm all year round –and of course, there is a half marathon to be run and anotherstate to cross off “Vicki’s List”.

Eight of us (Bob & Vicki King, Connie & Blair Hall, WendyNafziger, George Ford, my husband Bill McNamara, and I)decided we really wanted a mid-winter break. In fact, we’d beenplanning this trip since the prior winter! The race was onSunday January 28, but we were all present and accounted forby Friday, so as to allow ourselves enough time to acclimateafter the cold of Illinois… We adjusted very well, thank you, ona few poolside lounge chairs, some outdoor bars, and theoutdoor pasta dinner held the night before the race.

Race director Don Nelson did a great job of managing the KeyWest Southernmost Runners premier event. He even managedto answer most of Connie’s pre-race emails! The pasta dinnerspeaker was Bart Yasso, a Runner’s World writer who hasparticipated in marathons on all seven continents. His lecturewas titled “Never limit yourself to where running can take you,”a collection of photos and inspirational stories from races allover the world. (Paul Martin take note - for the MountEverest Marathon, they walked for 14 days to get acclimated tothe elevation, which started at 18,000 feet. Sounds likesomething you might consider!!)

I have to say, Bart Yasso is a person who thinks like we do, upto a point that is. He was quoted in the local paper as saying“It’s the destination that makes your runs memorable.” Whilepraising the Key West Half Marathon, he described how peopletoday often want to tie in running with their travel to aninteresting place. “That’s the beauty of a half marathon, especially in a place like Key West. It’s what we call half the

distance but twice the fun.” However, I have told Vicki that Irefuse to run in Antarctica even if it is on her list!!!

7am on Sunday, January 28 found us lining up for the ninthannual running of this race, which is sponsored by the Half ShellRaw Bar (one of the oldest and best dockside seafood restau-rants in the Keys, according to the race information). We triedto start DFL but two gals who introduced themselves as“Sunshine & Yoda” were determined to fill that spot.

This was a very scenic course, passing by or through Old TownKey West, the Hemingway House, Key West Lighthouse,Southernmost Point, and Southernmost House, among otherlandmarks. We ran on a bike path along the Atlantic Ocean, pastHouseboat row. Next was across the bridge to Stock Island, through the Community College and past the garbage dumps

with vultures flying overhead. (Wemade a lot of noise so our slow pacedidn’t confuse the vultures intothinking we were road-kill.)

We continued back on a bike path alongthe Gulf of Mexico, past the marina anddocks, to finish at Lands End Village. All along the way were enthusiasticvolunteers and lots of water stops. Thepost party was held outside the HalfShell Raw Bar, with awards, lots ofdoor prizes, plenty of food and, ofcourse, 7 kegs of icy cold beer.Proceeds benefited the Key West HighSchool Track Program.

We highly recommend this race. It isdefinitely a great, fun race at a greattime of the year, and Key West is aunique place to visit.
