Newsletter 1 HAWK WEEKLY Volume 3, Issue 23 January 11, 2016 A Note from the Superintendent STUDENT LED CONFERENCES Thursday, January 14, 4:00-6:00 p.m. When you come to conferences, you should stop by the table outside the main office to pick up your child’s report card, and be sure to visit each of your child’s classrooms to have them conduct their student led conference. These conferences are intended to accomplish the following: 1.They allow students to tell parents exactly why and how they earned the grades they earned in each course. 2. They empower students to set goals for their academic progress and report on those goals to parents. 3. They allow parents to hear directly from their child about how they earned the grades they earned and what goals the child has for their academic success. Notice that these are NOT PARENT TEACHER CONFERENCES. They are STUDENT-LED CONFERENCES. Students should be able to answer 99% of the questions parents typically have about student progress, questions like: *Why did my child earn the grade they earned? *What can my child do to do better? *How is the teacher helping my child succeed? *How can I help my child do better? All of these should be answered during the Student Led Conferences. If a parent still has questions for the teacher, they can schedule a separate meeting day and time with that teacher, but remember that this Thursday is not for that purpose. It is to allow the child to present their progress, their goals, their work, and their plans for the coming academic term. We strongly encourage all parents to come participate with their child in these important conferences. Come as soon as you can, but no later than 5:30 so you have enough time to be finished by 6PM. CONGRATULATIONS to these high school students who have been selected to participate in a special American History program at Valley Forge: Brittany Caudillo Andrew Cervantes Emily Rubalcava Alyssa Ulloa We are proud to announce that Samantha Johnson, a professional soccer player from the Chicago Red Stars, will be coming to speak to our students during the next six weeks as part of their Physical Education program each Thursday. She will be conducting a small soccer clinic, addressing topics of health and wellness, and talking about motivation and goal setting. We are very lucky Ms. Johnson will be with us and we very much look forward to her visits with our students.

A Note from the Superintendent

STUDENT LED CONFERENCES

Thursday, January 14, 4:00-6:00 p.m.

When you come to conferences, you should stop by the table outside the main office to pick up your child’s report card,

and be sure to visit each of your child’s classrooms to have them conduct their student led conference. These conferences

are intended to accomplish the following:

1.They allow students to tell parents exactly why and how they earned the grades they earned in each course.

2. They empower students to set goals for their academic progress and report on those goals to parents.

3. They allow parents to hear directly from their child about how they earned the grades they earned and what goals the

child has for their academic success.

Notice that these are NOT PARENT TEACHER CONFERENCES. They are STUDENT-LED CONFERENCES. Students

should be able to answer 99% of the questions parents typically have about student progress, questions like:

*Why did my child earn the grade they earned?

*What can my child do to do better?

*How is the teacher helping my child succeed?

*How can I help my child do better?

All of these should be answered during the Student Led Conferences. If a parent still has questions for the teacher, they

can schedule a separate meeting day and time with that teacher, but remember that this Thursday is not for that purpose.

It is to allow the child to present their progress, their goals, their work, and their plans for the coming academic term.

We strongly encourage all parents to come participate with their child in these important conferences. Come as soon as

you can, but no later than 5:30 so you have enough time to be finished by 6PM.

CONGRATULATIONS to these high school students who have been selected to

participate in a special American History program at Valley Forge:

Brittany Caudillo • Andrew Cervantes • Emily Rubalcava • Alyssa Ulloa

We are proud to announce that Samantha Johnson, a professional soccer player from the

Chicago Red Stars, will be coming to speak to our students during the next six weeks as part of

their Physical Education program each Thursday. She will be conducting a small soccer clinic,

addressing topics of health and wellness, and talking about motivation and goal

setting. We are very lucky Ms. Johnson will be with us and we very much look

forward to her visits with our students.

DRIVERS EDUCATION

We are interested in finding out how many students would like to take a Driver’s Education

Course. There is a sign-up sheet on Dr. Ryan’s door. If your child is interested, please ask

them to sign the sheet by this Friday. Students must be 16 to sign up. The course would likely

be offered on Saturdays and would include both the classroom and behind the wheel portions

of the training, but students assigned to Saturday School cannot participate, so if you failed an

English or math class, you are ineligible to take the Saturday course.

COLD WEATHER GEAR Please be sure your child has adequate protection from the cold weather. Here are reminders of the allowable

uniform items for cold weather:

HANDS – all black gloves with no logo or design

HEAD – all black “beanie” with no logo or design

TORSO – all black crew neck sweatshirts underneath the black PT jacket or black

windbreaker or black fleece army jacket (no hoodies are allowed, and no other

jackets are allowed)

NVMI is very pleased to start offering COLLEGE classes from Mission College on our campus. The first of

these will be Psychology 101, currently being offered through February 4, 2016 (Monday through Thursday)

from 3:45-6:15 pm. Classes are COMPLETELY FREE, including no fee for the textbook. All high school

students at NVMI (and NVMI parents) are welcome to take the class. To sign up, please contact Ms. Tejada a

[email protected]. This is an amazing opportunity for our students. Students who are particularly hard

working over the next couple of years can actually GRADUATE FROM NVMI HIGH SCHOOL WITH AN

ASSOCIATES DEGREE!

SCHOOL PHONES We are aware of the challenges sometimes faced when trying to call the school office.

Please realize we do not have a physical phone in the main office other than cell phones.

So when people are calling the school number, it is ringing on multiple cell phones

simultaneously. If you ever have difficulty reaching us, please simply call my cell phone

directly at 323-217-4481 and even if I do not answer, I promise I will return the phone call

as soon as humanly possible. It is also a good idea to try to email school staff if you have

questions.
