This coming Sunday is the Sunday when we spend time in the worship of God, by giving thanks to God, for the freedom we have to worship in our great nation. It is always important on such a day that we worship God and honor our nation, and that we always remember the importance between the two. On the Ethics And Religious Liberty Commission page we find these reminders:

“Freedom of conscience, unlimited freedom of mind,” said the American historian George Bancroft, “was from the first the trophy of the Baptists.” Since the 1600s Baptists have been the forefront of defending religious freedom, not only for themselves and other Christians, but also for Jews, Muslims, and other religious groups.

In the various ways the Baptist Faith in Message has been changed over the years, this article on Religious Liberty has remained constant.

God alone is Lord of the conscience, and He has left it free from the doctrines and commandments of men, which are contrary to His Word or not contained in it. Church and state should be separate. The state owes to every church protection and full freedom in the pursuit of its spiritual ends. In providing for such freedom no ecclesiastical group or denomination should be favored by the state more than others. Civil government being ordained of God, it is the duty of Christians to render loyal obedience thereto in all things not contrary to the revealed will of God. The church should not resort to the civil power to carry on its work. The gospel of Christ contemplates spiritual means alone for the pursuit of its ends. The state has no right to impose penalties for religious opinions of any kind. The state has no right to impose taxes for the support of any form of religion. A free church in a free state is the Christian ideal, and this implies the right of free and unhindered access to God on the part of all men, and the right to form and propagate opinions in the sphere of religion without interference by the civil power.

This Sunday we will again meet to worship God and celebrate the freedom we have to do so. We will remember that true worship is not coerced but flows from a grateful heart. I will continue my sermon series on “Living on a Prayer” as we turn our attention to “How to Pray for a Nation.” I hope to see you Sunday in worship and at our Patriotic Picnic in the evening.

Nathan Snell, the director of the Men’s Choir, has begun rehearsals and you are invited to come be a part of this great group of singing men. Each Sunday at 5 pm, the choir will rehearse in B-236, 1st floor–B Building (Note the change of room from earlier advertisement).

Come join the fun!

Special thanks to Maury Tepper, Ramona Green, and Amy Byers for providing beautiful additions to our worship service this past Sunday morning. As we continue with the series theme of prayer this summer, the music in our worship services has been especially meaningful. Thank you, Jessica Isaacs, for keeping the rehearsal going for the Sanctuary Choir while I was away this week in VA. I’m so fortunate to have colleagues who I can call on to step-up and use their gifts to serve God.

Mark your calendars! August 26 is an important date in our church’s summer musical celebration. The Trinity Laymen and various musical groups at TBC will be in concert with Miss Emily Roberts, niece of Dr. Roberts, who formerly performed on “The Voice” and is now a country music artist in Nashville! Beginning at 6 pm, we will hear music from these groups and from a “Hallelujah Choir” that you can be a part of, too. For more information about participating, give me a call or speak to one of the Laymen for answers to questions you may have. It will be a

wonderful night of music!

FirstLight will be taking a summer break from worship during the month of July. We are so appreciative for their commitment all year long, and we hope this will be a restorative time for them to be with family and to worship together. Our worship services will continue to have music by soloists and instrumentalists each week.

We’re trying something NEW this summer here at TBC– Summer Family Outreach Kits. During the summer, we all travel and are away at various points, but that doesn’t mean we have to become disconnected from our faith! We want to encourage and equip your family with a few easy outreach ideas & family devotions you can use this summer whether you’re in Raleigh OR on a fun family vacation. As your family completes an idea, use the hashtag #tBCKidsSummeroutreach2018 so we can share ideas on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram and celebrate God at work. We are so excited to be the hands and feet of Jesus through these activities this summer! Look for the outreach bags on the grade school and

preschool hallways.
