During his long police career, Jack was involved in tackling crime, upgrading through the ranks and played an integral part in the anti-drug operations Dochas and Clean-Sweep.

He also commanded the United Nations Cyprus police and assisted in setting up RTE’s Crime Line, which helps identify criminal networks nationwide

Talking to the Ballymun Concrete News, the Chief Superintendent paid tribute to the Gardai and local community leaders and gave a personal insight of his experiences as the man in a blue uniform.

“I would pay tribute to our people and community leaders in Ballymun who have fought back against the scourge of drugs”

“It is paramount that mutual trust continues to build up between community groups and local guards to challenge crime before it takes root,” he said.

Speaking on the €2.5million regeneration of Ballymun, he stated that people are learning

that “they have the power to choose what kind of environment they want for their children.

“When police and community collaborate they come to grips with petty crime and drug abuse, it is the integrated approach that makes the difference,” he said.

As Chief Superintendent, Jack was responsible for the major stations and districts sweeping from the Tolka River to Howth, and in charge of twelve major Garda stations with over 850 guards and staff.

Family tradition brought Jack to the ranks in 1962. His Grandfather served in the Dublin Metropolitan Police in 1875, and his late father Jim was a founder member of An Garda Siochana joining on the first day in 1922.

His Father taught Jack this valuable lesson “Trust must be

earned in life, the essence of good policing is about developing personal relationships with people in the community, if your going to do a turn on anybody let it be a good one”

During his diverse career he was Commander of the United Nations Police in Cyprus interacting with both the Turkish and Greek police service on the island. Under his jurisdiction was forty Irish Gardai and twenty Australian police.

“The Irish garda had better insight into policing a border area as a community based organisation they perform very well while abroad,” he stated

Apart from the community man well versed in communication he shared memorable moments of visiting heads of state. “President Clinton likes golf as much as me and he likes to enjoy himself. There is great electricity emitting from him and he has a presence.

Maggie Thatcher while shaking hands with the guards clutched her handbag tightly,” he stated.

At sixty years young, Jack retires from the force, taking his dynamic presence to excel on Rush golf course and to travel again with his wife Patricia.

The Ballymun Concrete News wishes Jack an abundance of health and pleasure in his now chosen civilian life.

Powerful dynamic internationally acclaimed Garda Chief Superintendent Jack Behan Santry Garda station, speaks exclusively to the Ballymun Concrete News on his

THINKING OF BACK TO SCHOOL? Ballymun Town Shopping Centre, Ballymun, Dublin 11 • Phone / Fax: 8420407 • Email: [email protected]

Make school cool! Remember school? Remember how cool, enjoyable and interesting it was?. For some of us it was a pain in the proverbial backside who couldn’t wait to escape, particularly those of us who were in school in the dark jobless days After all, what was the point of getting an education when there was no guarantee of a job?

By Ron Healy from irishunsigned.com Today, almost half of school-leavers go on to college, with free fees and student grants making it easier.

So, what about those of us who didn’t have today’s opportunities? Have we missed out completely? No. If you are over 23, you might be entitled to go back to school or college - and get paid to do it.

The ‘Back to Education Allowance’ (BTEA) and the ‘Vocational Training Opportunities Scheme’ could see you take a place on a course studying for a qualification in a subject which might interest you. Things like, music, com

puters, teaching, counselling, social studies, the list is almost endless.

Contact your social welfare office now, and ask about the schemes mentioned above. In the meantime, contact any secondary school or college and ask about their courses for ‘mature students’.

To wet your appetite, bear in mind that you can get approx €180 plus rent allowance for a single person, €350 approx plus rent allowance for a married couple with three children. You can also work weekends, midterms and summer and it won’t affect your ‘BTEA’ payments. It could be well worth it,

and you don’t have to be a super-brain.

Most colleges and universities have passed the deadline for their applications to a Degree. However, I would suggest your best bet is to do what I did. Find a subject that you like or that might be of some use to you in areas other than work. Get a place on a course in a Secondary school under the VTOS scheme and do a course in the subject for a year. This will allow you to find out if you are able to get back into the swing of things after a few years (or more) away from formal education.

Once you have done that, and

decide you want to go on to do a Degree, National Certificate, you can tell your prospective college that you have proven you can study.

This is one of the main conditions to getting a place as a Mature Student (i.e. over 23 years old). They don’t care about Leaving Cert results (unless they were good and you want to make a point of showing them) and are more interested in life experience and ability/aptitude etc.

It can’t hurt to try. You might even like it - especially if it leads to a good job with good prospects.

Festival in Keelings Lounge. With a marginal difference €830, Peter Conway was declared the New Lord Mayor of Donabate with €5,833 for the smooth running of Donabate Festival events and towards youth at risk in the community.

Peter works in Keelings Bar serving the public and has done so for twenty years.

Be aware, think TABS (Think act and be Safe)

With the current ongoing road construction in the Ballymun area there will continue to be disruptions and inconvenience to traffic and pedestrians. While major roads realignments are being carried out, it is important for local residents, to take extra care when crossing the roads and only use designated crossings.

As this project is being carried out in a major town with almost 20,000 residents (of which 6,000 are children) and existing dwellings in places, this makes it difficult to carry this work out safely without the co-operation of local people.

While there are a number of areas, which are of concern to ourselves and local residents, we are doing all we possibly can to provide the best possible safety measures in the interests of residents and our workers.

It is equally important, for parents to instruct their children of the dangers of playing anywhere near construction areas. We are very concerned that numbers of children have been seen climbing over protective fencing and playing in dangerous areas. To this end, we employed Security Personnel to keep children away from construction areas, but their powers are limited.

We urge all residents, in Ballymun to assist us by working with us and perhaps suggesting ways, that together in the interests of safety, we can minimise the dangers at construction sites.

We would also ask local schools, to keep reminding children to be extra careful when going to and coming from school. In particular to use only the designated footpaths and crossings.

If you see something which you feel is a threat to safety, please contact us immediately. Your action will help us and others. TABS Think Act and be Safe.

Author of three books, Expressions from Within, Guinness with Shoes off, The many voices of the Man in the Marmalade Waist Coat and creator of Manzone CD, will be remembered for initiating and managing regeneration theme song and video “ Seven Flowers of Ballymun”

He put Ballymun on the map by taking Men’s Issues to Europe and founding the National Men’s Coalition which enabled co-ordinators of Men’s Centres to unite and discuss future plans.

Christy, the man who walks on fire will walk it for the third time this October in Kerry for the charitable organisation Enable Ireland. The community activist, whose inner strength is founded on the belief

that you face fear and create your own reality, shortly begins his new post in Fr. Peter McVerry’s (S.J) New Residential Unit in Swords.

The lads in the Men’s Centre Shangan

Road, will miss Christy as he always took time to help them in every way possible, and the excitement received from production to performance for Nationally applauded CD, “The Future Looks Bright.” This is the legacy that Christy Fleming takes with him wherever he goes.

Congratulations tinged with sadness marked Co-ordinator Christy Fleming’s resignation from the Ballymun Men’s Centre, Shangan Road, as the lads presented him with a mobile phone.

Last Sutras were finalists in the National Student Music Awards and recently their song ‘Machine’ was voted Bacardi / HotPress Song Of The Year 2002 by the musically astute listeners of Tom Dunne’s Today FM Pet Sounds show.

Princess, also featured on the CD, charted in Ireland last year and received lots of airplay and critical acclaim.

IrishUnsigned.com, are hosting a competition to have someone out there design the cover sleeve for the next Sutras CD, which will probably hit the music stores during late Summer. The prize is no big deal. The winning design will be picked by Sutras and end up

in record stores shelves and the prize-winning design will receive full credits.

Signed copies of the CD, tickets to gigs etc are all in the power of Sutras to give the winner and we will find some other goodies to give away.

The lucky designer will also be featured on our web site www. IrishUnsigned.com and we will strive get the feature into industry magazines through our contacts. Ultimately, like Irish Unsigned, the idea of the competition is exposure.

If you are a student of design somewhere, then this could be considered part of your course-work, or a project piece. You might use it as a portfolio

piece when you get enter into the big bad world.

The design remit is simple: There is none! Not often in design work do you get the opportunity to start with a blank canvas and no rules, outlines or requirements.

Sutras will judge the winning design on flair, creativity, and ultimately, impact. However, it has to be a design, which stands out.

Look at their website (www.sutrasmusic.com) but don’t be constrained by anything you see there. Sutras are working on a new musical style, so a new image wouldn’t hurt.

IrishUnsigned, suggests you look at all the album covers you and your mates find eye-catching and

interesting to get ideas. You might want to consider some of the older stuff out there. Pink Floyd, Meatloaf Queen, whatever. Hundreds of good designs exist.

There are websites devoted to CD covers to give you a kick-start. Simply do an Altavista search for “CD covers”. pictures, (if you need them), of Sutras in action, can be found at their website. When finished, Email your design in any reasonable format, to us at competition@IrishUnsigne d.com

You might also want to check out web site www.irishunsigned.com/bcn.htm Please allow time to download.

The Euro

by Llyod Gorman Eurolink Journalist

As tens of thousands of Irish people and millions of Europeans mill around the continent to find their ideal leisure location, the Euro is about to come into its own.

Including Spain, Portugal, Greece and Italy, which are top of the list for many Irish holidaymakers, there are now 12 European countries using the Euro as their national currency which means that many travellers will not have to bother with ‘Bureau de Change’ services to spend the money in their pockets.

Certain Member States of the EU have not adopted for the single currency but even these countries, surrounded by their Eurozone neighbours with whom they trade, have come to accept it as a common-place currency with prices displayed in Euros.

The same is true of some of the 12 new countries in Eastern Europe, for those with a little more sense of adventure who are willing to explore Europe’s new frontier.

Travelling even further afield with the Euro is possible but some progress in the market still needs to be made Having reached parity with the dollar i.e one Euro is worth the same as one American dollar Europeans will not lose money by changing it to the currency of the States, another popular destination with Irish people

The Euro has even replaced the dollar in Cuba’s main tourist resort to the north of the Caribbean island although it hasn’t taken root in the rest of the socialist state

Travel to Britain, a major destination and hub for Irish travellers, looks set to remain expensive at least in the near future The exchange rate at the moment means you need approximately two Euro to buy one-pound sterling, so it will take twice as

much money to buy the same products or services.

The Euro has proved itself by passing the five economic tests set down by Gordon Brown, MP Latest reports suggest that a British referendum will be held on joining the Euro next year

If Britain decides eventually, to change from sterling to the Euro

they will strengthen confidence in the new currency and make travelling a lot easier and inexpensive for Europeans in general but Irish people in particular

Punters can expect a lot more foreign Euro coins in their wallets come September Money they can spend unlike the old days when a pocket full of change was only good for throwing into a jar

• Where is my market? The starting point in any market appreciation is a definition of the scope of the market you’re targeting. Mistakes are often made in initial market research by describing your business markets too broadly A small general shop may only service the needs of a few dozen streets.A specialist restaurant may have to call on a much larger catchment area to be viable

• How big is that market? You need some idea of the market size to identify how much you can realistically expect to sell. In the home improvements market, calculations may run as follows. On average people in Ireland spend €100 per year on home improvements products. If the catchment population for a retail outlet is 25,000 people the total market potential for that area is (€100 x 25,000) = €2,500,000. Using the same data for previous years, you can work out how fast the market is expanding or contracting

• Who are my competitors and what are their strengths and weaknesses? Most businesses have competitors. Identify who they are and how they can affect your business. Learn to know everything about them; their product range price discount structure delivery arrangements, specifications, minimum order quantities and terms of trade

• How can I differentiate my business from the competition? There must be something unique either about you or you product that makes you stand out from your competitors.Whatever your unique selling proposition is, communicate it effectively • What should I charge?

A great danger in setting a price for the first time is under-pricing. Remember raising a price is always more difficult than lowering one Every product or service has its own demand curve relating sales volume to selling price and shows that the lower the selling price the greater the quantity sold. You have quickly to get a feel for how your sales volume is affected by price changes.

• What is your message and where is your medium? Lord Lever is reported as having said that “half the money he spent on advertising was wasted but no one could tell him which half”.A key element in your market strategy must be what to tell and how to tell it. Begin by deciding how many people you want to influence through your advertisements. In some media, response rates are well established. For example planning or more than 2% response from direct mail would be unrealistic Gathering information on your market, your competitors are an important first stage in preparing a marketing strategy

The Main Street in Ballymun has dramatically changed over the last year resulting in a notable improvement to the visual appearance in both the roadways and newly paved footpaths.

• August to October will see major changes to the Main Street and adjoining link roads.

• The south (city) bound carriageway will be reopened to traffic, while the north (M50) bound carriageway will be closed to traffic in order to carry out further road works.
