Ten years ago, on the Sunday immediately following the September 11 attacks, the congregation gathered in Lakewood Park and left a legacy of hands and feet in clay which became an art project known as “Points of Contact", in memory of Janice Allen.
This year, in celebration of the tenth anniversary, we will gather again in Lake-wood park on September 11, 2011, to once again leave hands and feet in clay. The mural will be extended along the south hallway so that the two existing parts are joined together. We hope everyone will be able to be with us for this very special day this fall.

Sacrament of BaptismPrairie and Rhett Robbins, children of Karody & Brett Robbins, re-ceived the Sacrament of Baptism on May 29.
A special thank you to RoJean Loucks for leading, and to Becky Morrison who founded, the Grief Support Group at First Presbyterian Church. RoJean has facilitated grief support for the past seven years and she will now be taking a well-deserved rest. RoJean cites serving the grief support group as “a privilege” and she feels “it has taught me about accepting reality, shedding tears and taking on new challenges”.A community grief support group is now being offered every Tuesday night, beginning @ 6:30 pm, @ Hospice Care of Sa-
lina, 200 S. Santa Fe, lead by Judy Baugh. No affiliation with HCS is needed to join this group. Groups are also available in connection with Hospice of Salina, 730 Holly Ln. Thank you to RoJean and Becky for their faithful ministry to grief support in Salina!
A special thank you to Patty Mansfield and Katy England for their work with FPC kids! Patty leaves her posi-tions as Nursery Coordinator, after ten years, and as Midweek Messenger's Coordinator, a position she held for six years. Katy led the 4th/5th Fellowship group for the past 2 years. FPC appreciates their dedication and enthusiasm and wishes them well as they enjoy much deserved time off!
THANK YOU!

FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH
GUITAR LESSONS……are, sadly, not offered here at First Presbyterian Church. But if you are interested in Bible Study either one on one or as part of a small group, please let Pas-tor Jim Hawley know. He is accepting new “students” for personalized Bible Study. This Bible study has the advantage of being customized to both your time and your interests. Perhaps you and a few others have al-ways wanted to study a certain part of the Bible but an opportunity never presented itself? And, unlike guitar lessons, this Bible study is free. So enroll today and begin a journey of discovery with the Bible.
“Praying the Lord’s Prayer”Do you remember the first time you heard the Lord's Prayer? Most of us can't remember when we first heard this prayer; it was simply the process of hearing the words until we memorized it. And be-cause we say it so often and because its words have the flow of poetry, we are likely to speak it without investment of either mind or heart. But might we learn to “pray” the Lord’s Prayer?
You are invited to study the origins of the Lord’s Prayer, and learn to “pray” the Lord’s Prayer in a two-part study led by Tom Reid and Jim Hawley on consecutive Sundays; July 10 & 17. Each class is different and the two will build on each other, and you are encouraged to attend both. If however, you’re only able to attend one class, please feel welcome to come to the one you are able to attend.Jesus said, “Pray then this way . . .” Come learn more about the prayer Jesus taught us – the Lord’s Prayer.Sunday, July 10 - 9:00 am – Conference RoomSunday, July 17 - 9:00 am – Conference Room
Coffee, Conversation & a ThoughtCome for an hour of conversation, coffee, and a brief program & discussion in the Conference Room at the church. Recent discussion topics have been: the 23rd Psalm, Thomas Merton, Resiliency, Aging, Prayer, and the Holy Spirit.Come join a number of folks who have been taking advantage of this opportunity to gather – new & current attendees are welcome! The church provides the gath-ering space, coffee, and the presentation; you contrib-ute yourself and an hour of your time. When? The second Thursday of the month at 10:00 am; and the fourth Thursday of the month at 3:00 pm. So, mark your calendars for the following dates in July:
July 14, 10:00 am ⋅ July 28, 3:00 pm
Summer Meditations Come join FPC pastors Jim, Austin, and Tom for an informal time of reflection, community and conversation.
We'll meet once a month this summer, from noon – 1:00 pm in the Conference Room. Feel free to bring your lunch (or a friend!) with you.

A reception was held on Thursday, June 16 for the family members who contributed funds in memory of loved ones for the new stained glass windows in the Chapel. The eight windows were completed earlier this month and are a fitting tribute to the lives of those listed below. The Chapel is available during business hours.

The Social Justice and Mission Committee was formed at First Presbyterian Church in 2004 based on the fact that this congregation has been blessed with many gifts. With abundance comes the responsibility to share our gifts wisely. Social Justice and Mission’s benevolence dollars are funded annually at 15% of the church budget. This year the amount is $125,618.67. It has been our practice to make disbursements in the middle of and at the end of the calendar year.
Under the leadership of Mark Speer and Austin Ashenbrenner we formed subcommittees to decide how to distribute our funds for 2011. The agencies listed below have been chosen by our committee after thoughtful consideration. For more information about these agencies, and FPC Social Justice & Mission, visit www.fpcsa-lina.org!

FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH
PDA is currently expanding its National Response Team and adding individuals experienced-as or willing-to-be-trained-as a Hospitality Specialist to the NRT. PDA National Response Team members are the first PDA representatives in the field follow-ing a national disaster. They provide support to Presbyteries and Synods as they assess the impact of the disaster on both the church and the community, and they assist in connecting Presbyteries to recovery resources.
Anyone interested in attending a discernment weekend to see if his or her skills and desires lead them to join the PDA team should go to the online application for PDA
NRT—click on this link: http://gamc.pcusa.org/ministries/pda/pda-volunteers/#nrt. The first discernment is in July. There will be another in the Fall.
Applicants should have excellent communication skills, a demonstrated ability to work under stress, experience in disaster response, organizational skills and experience in conflict management.

The All Church Events Committee (formerly known as Parish life) is announcing a new “era” of cof-fee hosting and greeting here at First Presbyterian Church. The responsibilities have been streamlined and have helped make coffee hosting a fun activity that is much more enjoyable AND less time inva-sive. Also, in order to eliminate the hassles of mak-ing and receiving phone calls to fill Sunday slots, we have proactively designated many individuals and families at least one opportunity to coffee host and/or be greeters once per year.
If you are unable to make your Sunday, you may “trade” or help replace your name by calling othermembers to fill in. In addition, we will send out plenty of mailed and e-mailed reminders so that you can plan accordingly.
We will start this new and exciting method of coffee hosting and greeting on July 3rd. We have randomly selected members from the congregation to their specific dates for the rest of the quarter. Don’t for-get, we will send out reminders along with easy-to-read instructions on your duties.
This is a great way to be involved in our church and a great way to meet people! Your assistance with this important part of the life of our church is very much appreciated.

FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH
Dear First Presbyterian Church Friends:
We write to share our excitement about a wonderful project that honors former pastor Bernie Hawley’samazing ministry. Both the Hawley family and the session have granted us permission to ask you tocontribute to an endowed scholarship in Bernie’s name at McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago. The Hawley Scholarship will cover the cost of books and tuition for a student who shows outstandingpromise for congregational ministry. It is vital that new seminary graduates are able to seek their call andbegin God’s work with little or no debt. The Hawley scholarship can make this possible. Our goal is toraise $250,000; we have already received $75,000 in gifts and pledges.
Like many of you, Bernie’s ministry graced us both. As a former member of this congregation, Samlearned and grew as he listened to Bernie’s sermons each Sunday. As she succeeded Bernie as pastor ofthis congregation, Cynthia benefited from his stewardship and was privileged to lead a strong, vibrant andspiritually sound congregation in the Presbyterian tradition.
Why honor Bernie with a gift to a McCormick scholarship? Bernie, a 1958 graduate of McCormick, started his ministry while he was still a seminary student. During that time he learned the very skillshe put to such good use here in Salina. He returned to McCormick as a trustee in 1969 at one of themost critical times in the seminary’s history. As a member of the board of trustees that decided to movethe seminary’s campus to its current Hyde Park location on Chicago’s South Side, he helped secureMcCormick’s future both in fiscal terms and as a leader in cross-cultural theological education.
We ask you to prayerfully consider a three-year gift of whatever amount you believe would best honorBernie’s legacy towards educating future Church leaders. Nothing is too small or too large. Our goal is toallow this congregation, which was so beloved by Bernie, to participate in this important recognition ofhis ministry.
Thank you for considering this request. We cannot wait to welcome our first Hawley Scholar and hopethat you will choose to partake in this joyful opportunity to give in Bernie’s memory.
With warmest regards,
Cynthia M. Campbell Sam EvansPresident Senior Director of Development
To donate to the Hawley Scholarship, please contact Sam Evans at 773.947.6288 or [email protected] You may also send a check or pledge to McCormick Theological Seminary, 5460 S. University Avenue, Chi-cago, IL 60615, attn. Sam Evans.

FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH

THANK YOU!
